Yes, the HDMI is awesome

Pi Zero W/Zero 2 W will be THE most powerful CP devices, right?

Late to the stream, but I take it your putting CP on the new zero?

You should really make it optional to have the blinka on screen... OLED screen owner will hate you.

cinder wind
#

well that's how you get HDMI faster: extend the memory into the GPU range and just write to it /s

tame dew
#

Don’t miss the marketing wave: M1Python

teal river
#

The Raspberry Pi Foundation licenses the ARM cores from Broadcom, who helps in the design of the Pi chips. So only the Pi Foundation can get those chips, but the license is held by Broadcom. That's why there are some closed source driver blobs

tame dew
#

GPU is frequently the last holdout for binary blobs.

mellow thunder

That's even better news got like 4 original zeros!

Python 3.10 has deprecated “distutils”. Spent my day on that for Yocto Project. It’s nice to not need to worry with CP.

upbeat galleon

i learnt python by writing circuitpython

balmy tinsel
#

Same

upbeat galleon
#

this is literally a photograph of me: blinkacomputer

tame dew
#

One of the best things about CircuitPython is the code is “the same” (almost). Whereas MicroPython has different libraries (“u” prefix as a shorthand for “micro”).

timid plover
#

is that a smaller font than normal? 🙂

glad mortar
#

that is true, I'm currently building automation to setup a Pi image for use with Piunora, otherwise it would take quite a long time to get going from a bare image. Still not match to the quick setup of bare metal CircuitPython.

#

Also there is a lot of IO stuff that you couldn't do under a Linux kernel

#

like bitbanging is quite hard/limited in a non realtime OS

grand tusk
#

Hey everyone 👋

glad mortar
#

I wanna see Neopixel bitbanging 🙂

digital crescent
#

@glad mortar just got my email that Piunora is shipping soon. Very excited.

upbeat galleon
#

can't wait for the hopefully inevitable raspberry pi with pio coprocessor

glad mortar
#

under Linux thats not possible and you are limited to very few pins to drive NeoPixel, essentially only the PWM and PCM peripheral. Not sure why SPI can't be used.

upbeat galleon
#

drink some water, blinka

upper sandal
#

Rapberry Pi sells a hat with a RP2040 in it now

tame dew
#

I was playing with bitbanging GPIO for the ws2812 (“neopixel”) on the esp32c3-devkitc-02 with Zephyr Project. The RMT (remote control) peripheral makes it unnecessary. Sometimes the extra IP blocks on an MCU make or break you 😉

timid plover

if you can't read the code, can you really trust that it works?
question: are there many test cases?

This is exactly the reason why I use an IDE and reformat all source code before reading it.
Coding style preferences are weird!

upper sandal

I'm curious couldn't a lot of these large if groups be switch statements?

In Yocto Project/OpenEmbedded we have a variable “d” which is the instance of “DataStore”, which is a global. Newcomers are always confused by that.

with this big chonky font, CP needs to implement CBM ASCII to get cool map-building "letters"

@open girder Question: CP on the Raspberry Pi... Can you confirm an assumption that one would be able to just "turn it on and off" like an M4 or any other CP board/microcontroller, versus having to wait for the OS to boot and/or possibly frying one's SD card in the process? My biggest gripe about the Pi, and my biggest source of excitement around this announcement.

rapid hornet
#

@hot frigate the GPU of the raspberry pi does take a number of seconds to load the code into RAM. Once CircuitPython is running then the SD card will only be written based on USB traffic or python code (just like on a microcontroller)

Hi Scott. I hope that things are going great with you.

I put that into my ‘much later’ queue. 😎

Oh the joys of alternate keymaps (I use bépo myself which is an adaptation of dvorak for french)

balmy tinsel

oh no did you have to get rid of your custom keyboard?

grand tusk
#

on-screen keyboard?

balmy tinsel
#

that's some good news

last coral

Nice!

timid plover

I heard USB sniffer ( assume you meand SD card sniffer )

drifting arch
#

@rapid hornet you said you got a USB sniffer 😛

ornate coyote
#

Yeah, SD sniffer?

I use a 4x4 Trellis for my important passwords.

Probably signal integrity problems

Useful data on that debug stream?

last coral
#

PXE?

#

If it’s PXE, you need TFTP and DHCP.

odd zodiac

I've been thinking of using a macropad for my passwords (which are getting longer and longer to type in)

simple fractal
#

1Password FTW

eager matrix
#

I do the same but with Bitwarden.

simple fractal

if i lose my password manager i'm dead

drifting arch

I use tftp at home all the time, I used tftpd-hpa though..it works really well.

sterile forge
#

Try using a small server with only TFTP and DNSmasq

last coral
#

TFTP is supposed to be a pretty dumb protocol. It should just work˘®

Do you have any recommendations for making string formatting a bit faster faster in CircuitPython code? Or is it just one of those convenient things that takes a ton of cycles no matter what? 😅

I've tried '%g' % ('x') vs "{}".format('x') and that is weirdly a bit faster (0.23 sec vs 0.26 sec) in my testing on an RP2040... but dang, so many cycles.

simple fractal
#

Noticed microsoft published a nice discussion about getting usb ports to passthru to WSL2. Havent tried it yet but soon.
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/connecting-usb-devices-to-wsl/

I’m a software engineer building tooling for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code to support C++ embedded device development. These physical devices typically connect to a computer over USB, but we discovered we couldn’t use WSL to test our tools on Linux because it does not support USB.

drifting arch
#

@rapid hornet I do a lot with tftp, lets hook up off-stream sometime and I can help you debug.

simple fractal
#

I don't mostly need that as I can flash under windows or on an actual linux box. But looks good.

sterile forge
#

Also make sure your server is a static IP

drifting arch
simple fractal
#

i used tftp was back when i was doing a lot of network support. loading some boxes required tftp serves

desert orbit
#

Similar string format performance on an M4 actually, maybe 10% faster? :/

#

Not a huge deal, just like to keep those cycles short 🙂

simple fractal
#

Maybe that was the wrong emoji., i'm a newbie to those modern things

#

i though it was soft dip chocolate ice cream

And my laptop runs arch. so we can argue distros 🙂

btw the default Breeze SDDM (kde logon thing) theme has the "show password" button hidden, but if you install a different theme you can get a show password button at the login screen

I got my Blues Wireless Sawn Feather today along with their starter kit with the Cellular Data Modem. I'm excited to check it out.

upbeat galleon

i have a box running kde sitting beside me so i installed a theme called AbstractSDDM while i was watching, and i now have a handy little eyeball

i'm sure there are cuter ones that also give you eyeball

Oh I have the same cheap HDMI capture thing. Works quite well for the price!

drifting arch

It's 3 USB Hubs

#

So it's not something that would fix your issue...it's just I need lots of ports for my universal test-jig

#

Ok...next version will have PCIe based hubs...

sudden slate

I was not one of those lucky people who got the Zero 2

#

😦

#

Hi Scott

desert orbit
#

If I want to play along at home would a first-gen Pi Zero work alright for tinkering with dev branch builds? (assuming your pushing changes to a branch?)

sudden slate

Is that a custom PCB??

last coral
sudden slate

That's nice that the OG Pi Zero will be supported

Very cool - OK

Scott is actually a custom-designed discord+youtube bot with running maxheadroomd and livestreamd server processes

If the Zero is supported, would the RPi Model B (w/256mb) be supported since they use the same SoC?

sudden slate
#

Files downloaded - thanks Scott

last coral
#

I’m amazed you haven’t created a script to automate copying the file and sync

sudden slate
#

hehe

last coral

I’ve seen you doing that over and over on stream and can’t imagine how many times you had to do that off stream to get where you are now. I just feel the pain :p

you have mentioned SVD files, but maybe we could do a deep dive just into applying SVD files to new processors ( that's what you did , right? )

last coral
#

Is there a write-up describing the process and steps to port to a new platform?

#

I’d like to try on my own ARM board but I don’t really know where to start (yet).

They should have an 'expand all' button on that page.

We’ll talk at a better time then 😉

balmy tinsel

fpga and circuit python seem like they'd make a really powerful prototyping tool together, I'm hoping we get to see that at some point

Can this be the year we just collectively decide to get rid of day light saving time, seems like the lost hour of sleep does a lot of harm
