oh no Blinka is spitting Scott back out
Halloween costumes, always either so hot or so cold to wear
Here's the Thingiverse link - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1725308
While this isn't strictly a remix, I wanted to give "idig3d" credit for the inspiration. I created a soldering helping hands http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1635453 but when I saw idig3d's version, I liked the simplicity and faster build time. I thought I'd create one that was similar but had additional grooves and a tapered top. Here is my int...
It's gonna be magical!
Zero 2 is the ultimate board for CP!!!
Yes, the HDMI is awesome
Pi Zero W/Zero 2 W will be THE most powerful CP devices, right?
Late to the stream, but I take it your putting CP on the new zero?
that will be the Pi 4
Yay scroll!
Well, when we get there, lol
Cache FTW! Woot!
CP on Ryzen when?
hehe
With the big PI logo on top of the zero2 chip. it is still a broadcom cpu?
CP will Ryzen above the rest!!
Yaaaaaaassssss! Responsive scrolling goodness.
but that's what he's working on, a compute module 4
yeah I saw last week that CP's gc.mem_free() was in the MEGAbytes on RasPi. aahah
wow that is fast
Oh, Pi 4 is different, but I forgot he was on CM4
I can't wait!!!! CP on my 3 new zeros coming will be the best Christmas ever!!!!!
You should really make it optional to have the blinka on screen... OLED screen owner will hate you.
well that's how you get HDMI faster: extend the memory into the GPU range and just write to it /s
Don’t miss the marketing wave: M1Python
The Raspberry Pi Foundation licenses the ARM cores from Broadcom, who helps in the design of the Pi chips. So only the Pi Foundation can get those chips, but the license is held by Broadcom. That's why there are some closed source driver blobs
GPU is frequently the last holdout for binary blobs.
That's even better news got like 4 original zeros!
@teal river Sorry, the bot thought you were link spamming. Leave more time between link posts to avoid it 🙂
Oh, I thought it was the foundation, but whichever company actually does the design/production
MacOS is wild. I need BlinkaOS
Yeah, silly bot XD I suppose I could have put both links on one message too
Hi everyone 🙂
Also valid.
iCloud is attempting to upload 312k files or 19.98GB of data that it’s been failing to upload for the last 4 months lol
99MB down
have we lost twitch ?
I have trouble with my iOS/iPadOS devices syncing to Google Photos
Oh shoot, I didn't realize how late it was!
YouTube o
ok here - see REPL
ok
YT is still up
Looking forward to receiving Piunora and trying out this bare metal CP on CM4. Thank you @glad mortar and @rapid hornet
I'm off for my walk already, it gets dark so early -- have fun!
YouTube fine here
Huh I assumed it was my twitch that messed up
there is some text displayed mid-boot - that's the boot loader?
skinny mode
seems a bit blury here?
I can live with that to have 1080p
Those capture cards are not perfect
Mu is definitely a good experience
Just back home after walking into the village to get my ski boots fitted. Nice day here. Listened to YouTube on the way home.
this vscode extension is also great https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=joedevivo.vscode-circuitpython
and has stubs for autocompletion, and commands for installing libs
Python 3.10 has deprecated “distutils”. Spent my day on that for Yocto Project. It’s nice to not need to worry with CP.
i learnt python by writing circuitpython
Same
this is literally a photograph of me:
One of the best things about CircuitPython is the code is “the same” (almost). Whereas MicroPython has different libraries (“u” prefix as a shorthand for “micro”).
is that a smaller font than normal? 🙂
that is true, I'm currently building automation to setup a Pi image for use with Piunora, otherwise it would take quite a long time to get going from a bare image. Still not match to the quick setup of bare metal CircuitPython.
Also there is a lot of IO stuff that you couldn't do under a Linux kernel
like bitbanging is quite hard/limited in a non realtime OS
Hey everyone 👋
I wanna see Neopixel bitbanging 🙂
@glad mortar just got my email that Piunora is shipping soon. Very excited.
can't wait for the hopefully inevitable raspberry pi with pio coprocessor
under Linux thats not possible and you are limited to very few pins to drive NeoPixel, essentially only the PWM and PCM peripheral. Not sure why SPI can't be used.
drink some water, blinka
Rapberry Pi sells a hat with a RP2040 in it now
I was playing with bitbanging GPIO for the ws2812 (“neopixel”) on the esp32c3-devkitc-02 with Zephyr Project. The RMT (remote control) peripheral makes it unnecessary. Sometimes the extra IP blocks on an MCU make or break you 😉
hv for High Voltage?
Do they?
this reminds me of the plan 9 source code
if you can't read the code, can you really trust that it works?
question: are there many test cases?
This is exactly the reason why I use an IDE and reformat all source code before reading it.
Coding style preferences are weird!
oh yeah single letters oooooof
I'm curious couldn't a lot of these large if groups be switch statements?
Ah okay that’s what I thought
Never actually read the rp2040 part but that makes sense
i like when a variable has a name
Hi everyone - I thought DD was at 5 - blasted time zones
I put it on my calendar now
I wonder how that hat works, does it have a flash with some type of seesaw-like thing or does it run code sent from the main pi on the fly or some wizardry like that ?
I will never forget again
I deplore single character variable names, except may “i” from classic C code
You don’t like when someone does
def a(self): return b + rand(b) + d(b)
Lol
Make sure you're able to account for the upcoming changing timezones depending on where you are
lol, love this. i love to read code and be less informed than before i read it
at least it can't do b = ++b - b++
Hehe..
In Yocto Project/OpenEmbedded we have a variable “d” which is the instance of “DataStore”, which is a global. Newcomers are always confused by that.
I missed the zero 2 w ordering frenzy. 🦈 🦈 🦈 But i can wait a bit.
your code isn't displayed
time codes coming from youtube - so they will be in sync on replay 🙂
with this big chonky font, CP needs to implement CBM ASCII to get cool map-building "letters"
I'm having a Friday like that too, my brain is just refusing to think about things now that I have time to work on my own projects
I want the C64 font for CP with all the colors and all it had
Detour ahead !
Good call on using Nerd Fonts! I use them in my terms too 🙂
ohio scientific had fun glyphs
ooooo
I learned BASIC when I was 6-8 years old on an IBM mainframe while my Dad taught statistics programming to Psychology and Education grad students. After I got bored with the tutorials, my brother and I became honorary TAs (teaching assistants) in the hands on lab.
Know you're on linux but Windows has a shortcut win+; that pops up an emoji menu
Maybe linux has something similar?
yeah, kde plasma (which scott is using) also uses win+. for the emoji popup
Looks like you will soon need to update your OBS template to always show a small view of that glorious HDMI output. I for sure would love it!
when do cats listen ?
when they feel like it
Smiley face variable names have become a valid single character variable name in my lexicon. Thank you @rapid hornet
🦄 = sqrt(2)
Is the video feed blinking gray for anyone else? I've got it flickering on the twitch feed but am not sure if that's on my end
only on Twitch for me
but yea
reload seems to have fixed it
video find on youtube
it seems stable again. Who knows
NICE yes all the character fonts. I'm looking forward to adafruit_pi_fonts being a 1GB download
Open letter to any parents on the stream: it is NEVER to early to get your children using CircuitPython.
My friend's kid was asking me if I can teach him to code and have an extra circuitplayground I'm going to give him for his birthday in a week
I was 3 when I started learning ABCs and 123s typing punch cards for my Dad’s PhD dissertation.
ALL THE FONTS
and then asked how much more I made then his dad 🙂
klingon, elvish, ...
unicode and emoji variable names was one of my favorite features of Swift when it came out
Next week on the deep dive: Scott makes a remote door opener.
Basic, Ewokese, Huttese
Actually, I’d like to help start a foundation to give away boards to kids to learn CircuitPython.
On Twitch there are a lot of solution with Node-Red and a module that talk the Twitch API (and get access to the chat message) and you can trigger OBS change (with Node-Red module). Should be possible with Discord as a source of chat command...
that's when it is good to do a review of your 'own' code, when you've fogotten what it does 🙂

docstrings
I have almost no idea who committed code I wrote six months ago.
surely some rando
The desktop version of Discord seems really laggy compared to the web app
cat wrangling w/Scott
Sometimes it’s brilliant, so I’m happy to re-read it. It’s usually the code from two years ago I want to “git reset —hard” or worse on).
Spook's a cat!
The license wall of the SD simplified specifications makes me sad.
I have absolutely nuked git history with a vengeance before open sourcing. You never existed.
Already in costume for Halloween
Fortunately we both have a cat and can pretend it was him. (Not anymore…)
r = arrrgh!
Last week @rapid hornet did math on a Friday. This week deep dive on standards. No fear!
💯 any docs is better than none
All the docs
Except when it’s poorly written and completely out of sync with the real thing.
Bad docs are worse than no docs
Sometimes
Or there’s a silicon Errata you didn’t know about. I have 🎃 👻 stories.
This is proper halloween story!
Let me tell you a story about the Heisenbug. You could not count on the value of a bit in a particular register surviving for more than about 10 clock cycles on Rev A silicon. It was a nearly perfect RNG.
I have 🤡🤡 stories about ULN2003s and Octopart's datasheet
I tend towards the robotics side of electronics, but have been lately branching out
I sort of like the magic encoding that bztsrc did - them maybe have some macros that extract the pieces of the command as needed
though I suspect you will come up with a cleaner solution !
Forget pseudorandom
Yes, I like the command response shifting!
oh my goodness where's the time gone
Meh. It’s Friday and my brain is mush. I like where you are headed!
that the tradeoff - get work done or wear costume :=)
Nice.
logic analyzer idea is great!
The sdcard.org Design Guide « Whitepaper » is a pretty cool resource.
https://www.sdcard.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/SD_Express_Design_Guide.pdf
Well for an overview of the tech
Oh a dummy card
for logic analyzer probing?
@rapid hornet Thank for bringing in the weekend with another Deep Dive (and to the time keeper(s) ) ❤️
Blinka is friends with mice and keys.
worst case the SDcard connector on Piunora is quite easy to solder to
I ordered my Zero 2 from Pimoroni, 5£ shipping to France (with a bunch of other stuff)
I mean def. not easier than a full on breakout 🙂
but it seems its not a full breakout? the missing DAT3 is weird
Yeah, hit the same wall with mouser on an Airlift feather.
Export regulations can be a tricky dance
Recommended CM4 for the Piunora? They are hard to find...
The fun part is that they delivered a MatrixPortal M4 to me the previous week that uses the very same « restricted tech » chip.
Trying to compile CP locally on windows/wsl. Compiles fine for QTPY RP2040 but have a weird error for my RP2040 board. Getting some odd error: 'MP_QSTR___del__' undeclared - any hints on where I should look? It's mostly a copy/paste from QTPY and it works fine in GHA
You just gotta love the inconsistencies of these policies…
@wind spoke I ordered them from crowd supply (as part of my backing the project) and already received them.
you should be fine with 26AWG too, its a 1mm pitch. Not super wide but very solderable even without a microscope
and I made the pads wide and long
yep make clean always. it's the "power it off and on again` of development
are you planning to deal with CM4 with and without onboard flash?
Thanks! now compiling!
you are looking at SD Express though that is that newer standard that uses PCIe not SDIO?
For your eyes maybe 😂
I hate when Linux is the only reference implementation.
I mean it’s better than nothing but…
@rapid hornet page 30
if you mean order options
the lite uses 4bit interface the eMMC uses 8bit afaik
same peripheral tho
the order code is only on the packaging unfortunately
Oh my compute module has eMMC. Huh.
I should go for a walk as well!

thanks @rapid hornet have a good weekend!
alright everyone, time for our evening constitutional
thanks for the stream, have a nice weekend
Thanks for your work! Have a nice weekend.
Hack the Piunora for fun and Profit
bye Scott
Thanks for the stream! Have a great weekend all!
Thank you @rapid hornet
Thanks @rapid hornet
Where'd Scott get his Pi Zero 2 W from?
Adafruit
?
MicroCenter doesn't even have it yet
Neither does DigiKey
I know Adafruit did have some, although they sold out fast
Although he did say ordered, and I don't know if he has to actually order for Adafruit stuff or just email someone and they send stuff
Geez - I guess Scott's on the inside - so he'll get them before we do
Yess....
Lol, yeah. He said he had the RP2040 like a month ahead of launch to get CP ready
I mean, would you have wanted to not been able to use CP on it for over a month after launch?
Sounds like it
What does Scott mean when he calls it "bare metal" circuitpython
He means it isn't running on top of an operating system -- it runs directly like with an MCU
Circuitpython: Full Metal Jacket
lol
I got the 2w from adafruit just by subscribing via email. I only saw the internal ping after I made the order.
OK, thanks
Will be getting started with the stream in just a moment. Continuing on the pacman style game today on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch and youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9AWOZx1Esk
Hello, foamyguy. Today I'm driving Brickface on a Feather-M4. https://gist.github.com/rsbohn/1627e8fea461512364d59a2eb849a6e7
Dead pixel
Unless it’s intentional
Breakout for the LED glasses (which I haven't received yet).
So for now NeoPixel Featherwing.
Oh gotcha
Yeah feather tripler.
😄
You're mapping tile coordinates to pixel coordinates.
I think you're moving a tile at a time rather than a pixel at a time.
Better now.
Hey Foamy.
Had a busy day. My elderly aunt bought an apartment. That meant she needs internet, WiFi, a laptop, external screen, etc. So we went down to a local store to pick out everything. Took almost 2 hours just in the store... 😆
Whooo! Don't talk into the microphone when you are so close!
pellets
I can never spell 'pallet' right. 😀
Naughty ghostie.
🎉 🎉
Looks good, nice job evading the ghost.
Like the ghost vacuum idea.
Maybe print each time the ghost changes direction.
close one
Are you running the CP 7.0 release?
There was an issue with the pico resetting twice when you save a file.
I think it is fixed in the 7.0 release.
It's a good name.
(Pie Chart Chomper)
nice
Thanks @smoky island !
Thanks all 👋 Have a great weekend!
👍
The Desk of Ladyada - Spooky Stemma Seesaw Sunday! https://youtu.be/Jqad0GDXKr0
We're finally getting back to all the seesaw boards we re-designed to use attiny817's now that the breakout and tester code for this family is done! Here's two designs, one is a slide pot + 4 neopixels. The other is for 'arcade buttons' with built in LEDs. We're mostly focusing on UI elements that can be used to make control surfaces. We're also...
Spoop boops
I think I'm gonna get a pi zero 2 around the time I replace my graphics card: "in the nebulous future"
I bought almost everything that Adafruit recommended on the product page 😂
I'm excited, I've never had a raspberry pi before
AdaBox preparing for shipment
Welcome to the club!
will fo FAST
er go
The black spot in the middle of the screen scared me, I thought I had some pixels go out DX
I thought something was on my screen 😂
I think it's a greenscreen bit
that looks sweet
I got one!
Haha
Question on Zero 2 purchases -- it's limit 1, how long before you can order another one? A month? [a month delay seems to be standard for such things]
Woot!
@teal river you can purchase another, just make a new order
we cannot combine them tho
Ahh, gotcha. I'll be patient and order with my next order to save shipping XD or whenever they come in stock if they don't last until Wednesday, which would surprise me
Q: What is Limor's shirt? 'World peace is none of your business'?
yah, some band shirt
Google tells me it's Morrissey
Gotcha. Was just wondering about the saying it self.
yeah I've used a level shifter for the red and yellow versions
Considering the low power, I don't think we need to feel too bad about power efficiency... not like it'll waste 10kW
Bzzzz
That Weeping Angel was terrifying
And did I see a Glimmer?!
Bai! Happy spoopmis!
Love me a good charge pump

I'm very excited for circuitpython with the speeds of a pi
Thank you for making more pi zero 2 w available today. Ordered with some other goodies.
Picked one up, along with a few other things in the wishlist ... need some winter projects
Wow Pi Zero 2's still in stock... tempting to get yet another!

mic audio very good; peaking at -6dB, smooth, and in-sync
oh yeah and you can use Fritzing to "lay out a PCB" but using breadboard mode
here's the short header sockets JP was using: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3008
Thanks @haughty quiver
Thanks for the show and the discount
Thanks @haughty quiver . Always good to have a variety of perma-proto boards on-hand.
Thank you for show and discount.
hi foks, no 3D Hangouts this week (Noe's birthday!) we'll be hosting Show and Tell tonight - see ya'll then!
oh
Hope to see some of ya'll tonight ✨
@lilac tusk sweet! Thank you, Happy Early B-Day 🥳
i dont think i will be there
Happy Birthday Noe! 🎊
@hard hollow Happy Birthday!! Enjoy
Happy early Bday @lilac tusk
Thanks 🙂
@lilac tusk Have a Happy Birthday Tomorrow

haha, thanks @waxen thistle
good evening folks
thank you!
The pink really did wonders for it 🙂
thanks! yeah it was giving me some sailor jupiter vibes
Good evening all you most excellent people, robots, and cross-dimensional beings stuck here since the Halloween portal closed!
There definitely are some lingering spirits from Halloween @waxen thistle
Encountered some yesterday lol
Messages getting deleted by dynobot for everyone else but still being visible to me
I'm not seeing anything @lilac tusk
Howdy folks
Hello everybody
hey folks get ready https://streamyard.com/a5935izvqy
Spooks indeed!
we are ready sir!
Hey y'll
It’s a birthday show and tell a palooza!
Wouldn’t it be wild if everyone’s show n tell was a birthday surprise for Noe
howdy!
A wild John Park has appeared!
What's up Lars, I mean JP?
<they know too much>
Yay!
It's not a gameshow? What am I going to do with all these buzzers?
Boards!
2021 Boards Guide - probably 3/4ths of them are Adafruit
Send them to others, hook them to boards to sync online and do a show and tell game show
need microbit guitar
cuz I don't play piano (well)
got my pi zero w 2 today. What to build? What to make?
I'd love to see AR glasses -- it'd be a lot easier than holding a phone 🙂
now way off Broadway!
www.digikey.com/boardsguide to check out the app for both IOS and android..... It does work without the guide too. It can trigger to a flat desktop surface.
@novel bolt Hey!
Hello!!
I was looking for purple LEDs, and found one at Digi-Key but, as much as I love you folks, I can't bring myself to make an order for a single bare LED. 😄
So it's on my list for the next order.
That's easy to fix, order 1,000 😉
I made the Han Solo in carbonite in silk copper pla last year for a friend who loves star wars and it came out so well
There is always another order! Even if the warehouse is right under your nose
Why stop there? 1000 could just be one project! Might as well get 5000 just in case
I reject your electronics and substitute my own!
crosses arms in adam savage
Nice Liz
Ooh that's cool.
I was looking at the board guide. Pretty thorough
Such nice color gradient on that too.
Nice job @split gazelle what's the LED display?
starting early... what is this concept you speak of?
Dreidel, driedel, I made it out of LEDs
❤️ it
Unfortunately none of my companies boards made it in. But! They did make it into the make article about RP2040 and that’s the next best thing (because it’s linked in the board guide)
Thanks everyone for sharing.
Happy Birthday @hard hollow and great show both of you.
Thanks Noe and Pedro!
thanks! it's a 32x32 rgb matrix controlled by a matrix portal
woo! thanks folks, apprecaite ya'll tuning in 😄
LED projects honestly never get old
thanks much! 🙂
never ever
thanks!
Thanks guys
I hadn't realized Hanukkah was so early this year
Yeah, those lunar months are hard to keep track of
28 days rather than our standard Gregorian calendar
Which ya know is like a roller coaster
I feel my Jewish friends are going to be on quite the diet rolling from thanks giving right into Hanukkah
So much good food
yeah I was raised Jewish (more agnostic these days)
hmmm. latkes.
i'm not jewish, but i love so much awesome jewish food. and good food in general, regardless of where it's from. 🙂
Hehe same
Chicken fajitas in my house this evening
With homemade tortillas
This last weekend I did a beautiful lamb roast with fire roasted sweet peppers and fresh homemade pita
WOW
so hungry
do y'all have a favorite neopixel vendor besides Adafruit? I buy a lot of BTF-Lighting. They ain't cheap but seem a tad better quality than some of the other brands. Just curious...
Tortillas made earlier
I take my chances on Aliexpress
Nice. Flour right?
Yes I have bought a few from there and also etsy I think
I do corn tortillas on occasion
Adafruit and Digikey gets like 90% of my hobby budget. Sometimes I roll the dice elsewhere -- but usually expectations > results.
yeah I like them both
I’m usually buying a reel so I get 1500 for ~$120
Adafruit doesn't always have the configuration I am looking for. I love to buy from them when I can.
Roughly 9¢ a piece
good price
yeah I may have beat that but lost count
These just being lose ones I’ve soldered into products I sell
Not including individual projects which uh.. keeps going up 😅
Ah, I don't dig soldering if I don't have to. But sometimes ya gotta
for decorations I really like BTF's fairy lights. I have them strung up all over my office and driven by a QT Py RP2040 with power injected in 5 places due to length

I paid full price yesterday.
Certainly disappointed by the Virginia results and other races. But we have a year to get things together.
@open girder y'all are costing me money. I'm using StreamYard now. Thanks for being a great example!
well not exactly. I did buy the protoboards from JP's show
Okay, just buying some LED strips i need to finish some light projects that are gifts for others

The great search has taught me to be very a great parts sleuth
Saw a great new buck converter coming from TI that Digi-Key shared as new
Two variants. One does 4A and the other does 6A max current output!
Not available of course but still cool
LEDs ordered 👍🏻
"Why do we need so many similar products that do the same thing?" ~folks pre-covid
Post-covid....this. This right here.
Yupppp
@open girder Question: CP on the Raspberry Pi... Can you confirm an assumption that one would be able to just "turn it on and off" like an M4 or any other CP board/microcontroller, versus having to wait for the OS to boot and/or possibly frying one's SD card in the process? My biggest gripe about the Pi, and my biggest source of excitement around this announcement.
@rapid hornet may be able to talk about that, but it's like instant 🙂
maybe 5 secs or less
Looks like there is an important suggestion Adafruit: https://mobile.twitter.com/baldengineer/status/1456051991193477123
I'm not trying to say anything @adafruit, BUT, McMaster-Carr sells snacks ... https://t.co/s1wk2fEL01
Okay, I am saying, it would be cool if you also sold snacks. (Probably better if you avoid chips.)
fruit baskets perhaps
Exclusively durian.
Solder fountain fondue.
of purple doom
we could sell a better, lower-cost, open-source cleaning cloth to compete with apple
I wonder if that python os on pi can be placed on a zero
little bits of clipping
apple should also sell apples on their site if all fruit electronics companies need to sell snacks
@hot frigate the GPU of the raspberry pi does take a number of seconds to load the code into RAM. Once CircuitPython is running then the SD card will only be written based on USB traffic or python code (just like on a microcontroller)
same with raspberry pi, and blackberry 🙂
Does that mean that the SD card corruption threat still exists?
I have not used a sewing machine for like 45 years
we were discussing the Pequot Indians at dinner last night. They are prominent here in CT/MA area
Some people are celebrating indigenous people world wide for Native American Heritage month
what are you dressed up as? Neopixels!
@open girder You can put an "ada" sticker on literally any fruit -- done.
My question should be is how many battery backs Lady Ada's costume took
It’s powered by her sheer engineering will
Probably not that many. If she's only out for a couple hours, it's not that bad.
There's also persistence of vision -- they don't all have to be blasting all the time to look like they're blasting all the time.

@hot frigate Technically yes. The risk will scale with how often you write to the SD card. It won't be like linux where logs get written all the time
I was looking at an ItsyBitsy RP2040 today and really blown away with craftmanship of design and build
It's similar to the risk of corrupting the SPI flash with CP on micros
I tend to run the latest stable CPython on Pis
I am trying to source a ton of parts for a Black Friday launch. Will it happen? Ehhhhh maybe
That's great! Was just thinking if there were another option besides an SD card, seeing as how CP is kinda different from a full OS.
started using CPython on embedded systems during Jibo days
the robot was C/C++ and node.js but we used Python in manufacturing and Manufacturing test

Speaking of spam -- I'm SO GLAD that adafruit doesn't send me a "hey we saw you looking at X item!" email.
It's a bit creepy and unwanted, so kudos for doing the right thing!
When PT says "AdaBox Winter Edition" all I can think is
"Bucky" is just a mispronunciation of "PT"
yes. This is why we made the "Skills" layer of Jibo in a scripting language

LOL, "allergic to compilers". Please make that a sticker, as I think I am too.
Python is the antihistamine for those allergic to compilers.
there's a time and place for compilers. But it isn't the iterative dev process!

Suntsu's foot switches are suitable for applications such as soldering machines, industrial machinery, and more.
pedals!
Next adabox, I see it
Foot switches are mmyy.
i have as many pedals as I have neopixels
lol
@split gazelle you inspired me to build some guitar pedals
So next adabox is a floor synth with foot switches
These switches may or may not have been used in Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark in the room with the golden idol.
Floor synth!!!!

I thought it was funny I designed an ESP32-s2 feather because I was impatient lol..
I mean, you're not alone there haha
is it fair if I do buy one? I bought one last week
oh somebody was asking about using the ESP32 Huzzah feather and the matrix featherwing, are there specific requirements that would prevent it ? (incidentally what prompted making a separate wing for the NRF52 ?)
@ionic garnet yup, it's all good
thanks
@open girder Thanks. I ordered one. By itself. Sorry. I did order a bunch of higher margin stuff last night.
Sorry
I will make it up to you promise
#askanengineer Would a PR be accepted to add a CircuitPython build for an ESP32 board, to natively use the Adafruit peripheral libraries? Or would that only be accepted for ESP32-S2 boards that have native USB, so instead I should just try to compile my own CircuitPython firmware?
@ionic garnet all good, appreciate it 🙂
the ruiz brother propmaker based projects (example the time stick) always use m4 express. can i use the more affordable rp2040 feather?

@shy cipher ya, I think we'll end up supporting ESP32 via ble at some point. opening an issue is always a great place to start
Trust but verify,
So read the fine print
Or perfect 25°C ambient temperatures
You can't eject the core if you lose containment though.
please do @rapid hornet . I just bought one and don't want to have to use C++!!!
you can use micropython though
I stand corrected!

thanks for a great evening of shows!
Thanks @open girder 😄
@open girder Thank you so much. The zero w 2 was a nice touch!
I grabbed a pile of inexpensive M5 Stamp, ESP32 boards that have a Grove connector that works great with StemmaQT boards using the adafru.it/4528 cable. Was having struggles getting Blinka playing nicely with I2C and MicroPython, and the Adafruit peripheral libraries...clearly native CircuitPython would work best 😉 Can work that out with the team in the "Help w/ CP" channel
And Happy Diwali to those celebrating
(Starts tonight? Tomorrow?) Google says November 4th
I've heard there is a hack that gets most esp32 boards to run CP. I think I heard that
@turbid hill I could make a joke there 🏳️🌈 that would not be PC. So I'll drop it. But I am what I am.
@shy cipher You probably want #circuitpython-dev for getting CP building
Don't expect USB to work though
- the USB drive
OH no, I'm perfectly fine with the lack of USB...these boards don't have it! It's getting device libraries to work in a fashion where I'm struggling. Perhaps I'll work with both channels 🙂
It was primarily that I'm aware the Adafruit default policy is for CircuitPython to be beginner friendly, with the "PyDrive" to easily copy libraries and code to and from boards.
ya, we won't be official on ESP32 until we have the BLE workflow
but it's pretty high on my todo list behind this raspberry pi stuff
Today was National Sandwich Day.
thanks Scott
so when your board doesn't even HAVE a USB port...it's clearly not a sanctioned device. If I can git clone the repo and build for my device, that's already much easier for using the I2C boards that have good libraries. That answered my questions, thanks!
I think ESP32 support will take more work than that. We would accept it as a PR though
@ebon stratus $2 off at Jersey Mike's for national sandwich day!

might be obvious, but still 4 per year?
yepper, more or less "quarterly" but now "seasonal"
awesome thx
which is more north american 4-seasons -- versus places where it's dry or wet, or in american locales where it's 2 seasons of winter and construction.
can I get those in Low Quality PCBs instead?
spin the wheel on ebay or amazon third-party sellers....spend 3/4ths the amount for a chance at maybe 1/4th the quality.
Vivaldi's Four Seasons?
why were all the pins on the screen connected to gnd
I like the word Autumn, but Fall makes more sense.
??? didnt hear anything?
was it the cut pcb?
@haughty quiver the video of you in the flanel shirt showing the perma proto
SuperSaw!
I'm confused. 🤔
make a Commodore SID simulator with adafruit waveform
What was the reason, got called away at wrong moment
@tiny axle He was just using the protoboard to mount the screen. It wasn't connected to anything via the board.
@tiny axle the screen was connected via a cable.
ok
Everything is working today as Lars is fast asleep.
lars is meditating
Halloween wore him out.
I hate Lars
Don't say that out loud! 😉
As if the back end of the motor wasn't a clue, the two wires and the cap is a big clue...
hmn why don't N20 dc motors have caps?
I only buy preterminated dupont and JST's now as crimping them is a pain even with the correct tools!
crimpin aint easy
The H-Bridge only supplies positive voltage. by controlling which contact is positive make the meter think its negative
The M5Stack Core2 connected with the Goplus2 module allows the motors to be connected directly without replacing the connectors.
Use an analog meter (not DMM) to measure the voltage from the speaker
I've come to hate those screw terminals.
larsgiving
Lol
now if that show lars face
replace sounds with Medieval Madness Pinball sounds.
MP3 Dakota? 😉
My college's student union building had a gaming lounge (arcade, snacks, pool tables, etc)....and one of their pinball machines was Lord of the Rings.
When you spend hours there for projects, those sounds become part of one's psyche 🙂
"In my mind, I'm going to South Dakota"...
"It's a Mystery"
@waxen thistle So you'd walk outside hours later and then say "I have no memory of this place..." 😄
Thanks @haughty quiver for another fun project!
similar to that but with lars
I like the approach to abstract the functions in the CircuitPython code -- very flexible.
something with gremlings could be fun too
Thanks @haughty quiver. Have a good weekend.
Woop woop
Volume knob for testing is soooo nice. I've worked on gadgets like that before and hearing it play it's thing a million times while you're working on it gets old somewhat quick.
DC motors do that. The cheaper the motor, the louder the sound.
Reminds me of floppy disk music arrays
Trams and trolly buses - if they use PWM or PPM to control the speed, you can hear the distinctive humming or whistling noise they make.
thanks a great big bunch for coming by!
Excellent show @haughty quiver . Always fun to think about hacking options.
What Scott is doing with CP and Raspberry Pi is pretty exciting! I'm one of the lucky ones that nabbed a Pi Zero 2 W. My mind races with all the video, audio, and crazy stuff people will get up to with this thing. Maybe Scott will be working on GPIO in the next Deep Dive?
@fathom kite GPIO works already for the pins I've defined. I'm hoping to work on Zero 2W support today on the stream.
🤿
Hope my 2W arrives today.
since I learned about Scott's plans I've had to put my rpi4 in the spot planned for the 2w so the 2w can be ready and waiting for CircuitPython when the time comes

Hi Scott. I hope that things are going great with you.
I put that into my ‘much later’ queue. 😎
just popping in to say hi at the start, will consume this content in the future
So I guess it is still there.
Yup, only fixing it for 4.3.2 - kinda weird 😉
Caps Lock??
Oh the joys of alternate keymaps (I use bépo myself which is an adaptation of dvorak for french)
oh no did you have to get rid of your custom keyboard?
on-screen keyboard?
that's some good news
Nice!
I heard USB sniffer ( assume you meand SD card sniffer )
@rapid hornet you said you got a USB sniffer 😛
Yeah, SD sniffer?
I use a 4x4 Trellis for my important passwords.
we are listening carefully 🙂
Useful data on that debug stream?
I've been thinking of using a macropad for my passwords (which are getting longer and longer to type in)
1Password FTW
I do the same but with Bitwarden.
if i lose my password manager i'm dead
I use tftp at home all the time, I used tftpd-hpa though..it works really well.
Try using a small server with only TFTP and DNSmasq
TFTP is supposed to be a pretty dumb protocol. It should just work˘®
Do you have any recommendations for making string formatting a bit faster faster in CircuitPython code? Or is it just one of those convenient things that takes a ton of cycles no matter what? 😅
I've tried '%g' % ('x') vs "{}".format('x') and that is weirdly a bit faster (0.23 sec vs 0.26 sec) in my testing on an RP2040... but dang, so many cycles.
Noticed microsoft published a nice discussion about getting usb ports to passthru to WSL2. Havent tried it yet but soon.
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/connecting-usb-devices-to-wsl/
@rapid hornet I do a lot with tftp, lets hook up off-stream sometime and I can help you debug.
I don't mostly need that as I can flash under windows or on an actual linux box. But looks good.
Also make sure your server is a static IP
Getting usb ports working with WSL is easy....you format and install Ubuntu instead 😄
i used tftp was back when i was doing a lot of network support. loading some boxes required tftp serves
Similar string format performance on an M4 actually, maybe 10% faster? :/
Not a huge deal, just like to keep those cycles short 🙂
Maybe that was the wrong emoji., i'm a newbie to those modern things
i though it was soft dip chocolate ice cream
And my laptop runs arch. so we can argue distros 🙂
goes back to cooking
Four USB chips? For the love of god, Montressor!
As long as it's A distro...I don't mind.
btw the default Breeze SDDM (kde logon thing) theme has the "show password" button hidden, but if you install a different theme you can get a show password button at the login screen
I got my Blues Wireless Sawn Feather today along with their starter kit with the Cellular Data Modem. I'm excited to check it out.
i have a box running kde sitting beside me so i installed a theme called AbstractSDDM while i was watching, and i now have a handy little eyeball
i'm sure there are cuter ones that also give you eyeball
CM4 with 10 USB ports :)
Oh I have the same cheap HDMI capture thing. Works quite well for the price!
It's 3 USB Hubs
So it's not something that would fix your issue...it's just I need lots of ports for my universal test-jig
Ok...next version will have PCIe based hubs...
If I want to play along at home would a first-gen Pi Zero work alright for tinkering with dev branch builds? (assuming your pushing changes to a branch?)
Is that a custom PCB??
Yep
Scott is actually a custom-designed discord+youtube bot with running maxheadroomd and livestreamd server processes
XD
If the Zero is supported, would the RPi Model B (w/256mb) be supported since they use the same SoC?
Thanks - that's grrreat
Files downloaded - thanks Scott
I’m amazed you haven’t created a script to automate copying the file and sync
hehe
I’ve seen you doing that over and over on stream and can’t imagine how many times you had to do that off stream to get where you are now. I just feel the pain :p
Firefox with Tree Style Tab extension : https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab/
Great add-on!
lsof -i:4444
Kill the previous Openocd attempt
it liked it
you have mentioned SVD files, but maybe we could do a deep dive just into applying SVD files to new processors ( that's what you did , right? )
Is there a write-up describing the process and steps to port to a new platform?
I’d like to try on my own ARM board but I don’t really know where to start (yet).
They should have an 'expand all' button on that page.
It’s an FPGA with a HPS (Terasic De0-Nano-SoC)
The hard processor core is an ARM dual core Cortex A9
I’d like to drive HDMI or DisplayPort from the FPGA fabric (This part I’m pretty good at) and run CircuitPython from the HPS (There it’s over my head…).
We’ll talk at a better time then 😉
fpga and circuit python seem like they'd make a really powerful prototyping tool together, I'm hoping we get to see that at some point
That’s exactly what I’m after!
what's the equivalent SVG for "cpuinfo" 🙂 ?
Can this be the year we just collectively decide to get rid of day light saving time, seems like the lost hour of sleep does a lot of harm
well i like it as otherwise it would be super dark early morning skiing
I like Daylight Savings
oops, yes get rid of daylight time, keep standard
1 hour early for me this week back to normal next Friday
just leave it "saving" all the time 🙂
Let’s just use UTC everywhere and adjust locally
No one else has ever liked my idea of slowly setting the clock back over a week
it was super dark this morning at 7am. like full dark, and raining.
Time is just a convention
ok, ragu is simmering.
That would be a nightmare for computers!
i used the listening time productively
its dark in winter what is coming but it got dark in 4pm here
