good here
good
twitch is back too
👍
All good! For now...
Youtube good
lars with some wire biting?
how cool would it be if he vanished into the ceiling?
@haughty quiver Do you need any mountain climbing gear? 🙂
Lol
I believe those interlocking floor mats are also EVA foam.
Most of them
Better to cut a bit long and have it pressed in a bit
For Pi stuff, might want small trays/drawers...
Gone again... 😩
What's gone?
YT is working okay
It froze here.
Are you on Twitch? YouTube good for me
Maybe it was at my end. There are thunderstorms approaching.
@haughty quiver I would recommend little finger holes to help grabbing it
RIP mousepads
Embarrassingly, I've occasionally used KiCAD's board layout tool for small 2-D CAD drawings.
Offgassing foam can be rather toxic.
I think Neoprene will melt and/or catch fire
Lol. Lars is out cold.
Should have ventilation system to filter out gas in the cutting area
Indeed, proper ventilation + PPE.
Your correct
PVC offgasses plasticisers. Remember having to clean all that greasy crud off your car windscreen back in the 70s?
I need to build a new laser cutter
Turn off snap to grid
This kind of thing is certainly a "close enough" situation, lol
@haughty quiver frozen on YouTube again
Oh wait there it goes
That wasn't my thunderstorms...
buffering on YT at 37:44 then it resumed -- all okay now
I had an Epilog Too
My laser cutter is 8W and made from DVD drive lasers, lol
Yo dawg, I heard you like storage, so I put storage in your storage...
I usually unplug MCUs by the A side if I'm just doing it for a power cycle
@haughty quiver Good show!
Thanks @haughty quiver !
THanks JP
Great workshop, as always @haughty quiver 👍
very welcome, and thank you for being part of it!
Thanks @haughty quiver . Excellent inaugural test of my new 21st century fiber. 720p reveals many more details than 480.
yay!
Hey JP was it you that adapted a M-Audio Oxygen 8 Keybed to be used with a microcontroller?
@sterile forge yes I did that
@haughty quiver What version of the keyboard did yours come from?
I have a version 2 which I have not taken apart yet.
@sterile forge oops my bad, it was an M-Audio Ozone that I had, not an Oxygen.
@haughty quiver - great show! I try to make them, but the timing is hard. Just watched it a few hours ago though.
thanks @sudden slate
no deep dive today?
Should still be happening.
Yeah there will be a Deep Dive today.
makes the youtube video
thanks
np 🙂
I've missed two in a row, I'm excited for the dive today.
Soon™️

sure appreciate the doc effort
Deep Dive Notes Repo
https://github.com/adafruit/deep-dive-notes
If someone wanted to make that more bootiful with a static site generator or sumthin that could be supercool. I'm not good at that.
Hi Scott. I hope all is well in your life.
Good afternoon
how goes it all? Hope you're doing well
Hola from 'rado ! 😄
Hey Scott, Hey everyone!
It’s been raining a bit north of Vancouver. So smoke is fine. Here it’s a nice day.
Nice!
Boozy pics lol
Yesterday went to a Zoom session hosted by meetup and a funny things happened. At the beginning the moderator from meetup was talking to the speaker and her dog started barking because of the stranger’s voice. So the speaker also had a dog and it started barking and the dogs barked at each other over Zoom.
There was a carpet in your way?
Just a sad loaf
There's another Patrick, that was confusing
🥳 That's really nice you got it merged right around the start of cp7
did you measure the CPU savings with the new CI?
well - it's water behind the grand coulee dam though
Good to reduce resource consumption wherever we can, whether it comes from our pockets or not
I made a few Adafruit orders XD That capture stick is on my "eventually" list
my friends call that the "Nintendongle" because they use it to stream switch gameplay
lol
I use it to look at my Rapsberry pi's screen if it behaves weirdly and I can't connect to it
I think it works on USB 2.0 because it's heavily compressed, and I think 30FPS max??
Oooo s3 !!
"what do you mean one ?"
Oh yeah dongle probably has high latency... but fine for Pi!
Question about you getting stuff free from Adafruit... Is it whatever you want, for work or play, or just for generally work related? [is there a difference for you?]
should be super easy. anyone could do it lol
ohmygoshyesiwanttoseethat
yes please
Ohhh, dual USB
Fuzzy
Might need 4.3.1
https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf/releases/tag/v4.3.1
Buy now takes one to contact sales https://www.espressif.com/en/contact-us/sales-questions
nice looking board.
M = no PSRAM
I wonder when Espressif's dev boards will all be Feather form factor 🪶
Yay datasheets!
https://esp32.com/viewtopic.php?t=21232
says ( contact us for technical info )
Espressif ESP32 Official Forum
some info here: https://esp32.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21992
Espressif ESP32 Official Forum
following that link leads to 404 😦
CPU speed: >0MHz
ESP32-S2 240 MHz (feathers2.io)
It has all been worked out scientifically.
Scott the Wild Man!
honestly it's really informative
All the Dives are interesting
This isn't the "BLAM POW EXCITING WHOOOOOO" stream, this is the "chill and do some stuff" stream. The former is JP's Workshop XD
Hi from Costa Rica
Buenas tardes!
In good news, I figured out why my Ultimate GPS module wasn't showing up on I2C: It doesn't actually have I2C and the datasheet lied to me, lol
I know some people love cmake but man i found it painful just to get basic things going with it
Would this stream be a solid example of how to add a board to circuit python? (Acknowledging there's a lot of borrowing from existing board files)
There's always a lot of borrowing 🙂
more like adding a port
Awesome thank you! Slowly trying to be more of a feel for the whole setup 😄
I'm soldering and listening to the sound of your voice more than focusing on what you're working on since I don't understand most of it anyway :P
How easy is it to add a board?
I did it once.
OK it was the Pre-Release FeatherS2 and I only had to copy the S2 and make two pin changes. 😉
What is a good guide for adafruit-request on cpy?
This guide is written for the ethernet breakout but contains a page that covers some of the basics with requests which would also be relevant when using different types of interfaces. https://learn.adafruit.com/ethernet-for-circuitpython/usage-with-requests
Thanks a lot.
What's CMake?
you just used "rg" - which is what?
rg : recursively search the current directory for lines matching a pattern
It's a build system that generates build files for c/c++. It has it's own all caps programming language and everything it's very involved.
Ahh... Oh gosh all caps
All caps, CMake thinks it's a programming language from the 70s and 80s.
In cmakes defense I think they're trying to get away from it. But yes when I was trying to work with it I had to remap caps lock to my keyboard. It looks like a very old school program because of the all caps, not great for readability.
haha the name
what are good git tools to answer the question - what did the variable get renamed "from" ?
It's freaking amazing that this stream is only 9 seconds behind "now". Gotta give a hand to YouTube's infrastructure to make that work.
I don't know how to use git blame in the command line, but I do it on github
we all make mistakes - it's how we deal with them
that's not how do brain work !
If that was true we could save a lot of money on CI process
Senior engineers just have more experience fixing their silly mistakes
It is such a pleasant surprise when I write something and it works as expected on the first try. It's rare, but I take a moment to enjoy it every time.
I literally do the victory dance and my wife goes.... "oh something worked."
Right? Celebrate the good moments.
While Scott does things, I wait for GPS
I find those GPS really need a window or to be outside.
AH GOT A FIX AND MOSQUITO BITES
I was outside, lol
Now I'm inside and it still has a fix :D
aren't you so glad you have a fast CPU!
@timid plover are you timestamping every build error ?
Make sure to obscure any real GPS data if you post anything here.
Deep Dive w/Scott Hi all, this doc is try and track topics and timecodes for my deep dive stream. These notes will end up in the YouTube video’s description. Any help keeping them groomed as I stream is welcome. Housekeeping I’m sponsored by Adafruit to work on CircuitPython. Support them, and...
Hi, I have a box given to me by Espressif that say ESP32-C3-DevKitM-1 ... is this going to be useful?
Yeah, don't want unannounced strangers showing up XD
It's happened before and I've had to have folks delete things. 😄
So I try to mention it ahead of time when I can.
Um... I believe so, but I genuinely don't know what the rest of the data equates to. And there's a lot of it. I'm sure the internet can tell you what else is there.
Wait you do S3, and I have a C3?
I think I'm just gonna not XD figured "Waiting for fix..." Might not give too much away :P
For sure. I saw you posted, so I wanted to remind you not to post once you had the fix 🙂
Finally opened my Macropad box
Hehe, I appreciate it. Thankfully it wasn't broken, just needed time for first sync!
Which side of the plate will you have showing?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Lol
The other side says MacroPad
I have the MacroPad side out
Oh which will I use... I don't know yet. They're both really cool looking
It's to specify an additional path to look for libraries.
You should do a session using the live share feature of VS Code so some people can help code along with you
make -j 32 Jealous.
Or you could help someone on a project ...
What aspect is noisy? (And what does your editor do differently?)
VS code has popups
ex: open a file with some extension
Clippy shows up and asks to help you
So that's far and away my least favorite part of vs code--I figured every editor had them.... I might be changing editors..
I'm with Scott, I'm a huge Sublime Text fan. It just gets out of the way and I can get on with programming. VSCode is nice ... just not for me.
I mostly work with BBEdit on my mac, but on windows every time I open VSCode it pops up a tab with "what's new" 🤦
Coming from Visual Studio, VS code does feel like it gets out of the way. But you gotta use the tools that work best for you.
I was summarizing Scott on that .. I love VS Code and all the auto stuff. But I don't code all day like Scott does
"You do you"
like, I was opening a file, don't force another tab on me
Some people are more manual
Too noisy for me as well. I like it better than the IDE arduino, but I haven't used it (or vscode for platformio) in a while.
is way to fun.
(I loved the Twilight theme for Sublime Text 2 -- So much so that I ported that theme to my Terminal.)
I'd code with pen and paper if my computer could use it. IDE's have so many learning curves and I've never had motivation to figure them out
I like Notepad-style things
Maybe we need to add a FAQ to the deep dive repo ...
I started programming with Notepad (Yes, just Notepad), then Nodepad++, then Sublime Text.
if a board has a power controlled neopixel should that power be enabled in board_init? (in board.c)
i did use sublime but move to vscode
That's sick!
you do #define CIRCUITPY_STATUS_LED_POWER (&pin_GPIO11)
its not power pin, its controlled through a I2C expander (unfortunately)
ah
\b
then yes ?
find * -iname '*.a'
I started in MS-DOS Editor, lol
LMAO, this is like watching a meme. "So you want to fix a problem with regex, now you have two problems."
i've just put in a PR for TinyUf2 for it.
Who ever put tape on these…
ideally you want to turn it off after the firmware uses it to avoid eating power, and turn it back on in user code (like the neopixel library does for power pins)
It's impossible for the old me to see ...
And I just spent 5 minutes trying to get the screw to go in
hah!
the tape feels like it's gonna be hard to remove too, but it's actually fine
makes sense. it is off normally. i'll just leave it for now.
I like to carefully remove and transplant to the other side, using a razor blade
I laughed pretty hard when I realized there was tape
nm -og on a .a file will give you symbols - is that what you wanted?
All of them XD
now to transition to S3 🙂
🥳
🎉
So can you throw that on the S3? :O
YOU CAN DO IT !
It's all work that needed to be done!
Next week!
@smoky island can finish it up on his livestream 😉
What are you doing with the Raspberry Pies?
How's the wii balance board been?
"I bet it will be simpler" famous last words
So what Raspberry Pi do I need for this forthcoming stream?
That would be AMAZING!
so is mine! 😄
Thank you!
That great Scott, thank you !
Good hangout!
Thanks for this awesome stream! It was suuuper informative!
next week friday?
But the cleaner?
Chill catto
I have a 400, 4, 3B+, 3B, and Zero. I'm all about this. I actually have multiple of them all so I'm ready!
Thanks a lot for this dive, very cool as always.
What Pi?
I think the answer is all of them. LOL
good day/night/morning/exosunrise everyone 👋
Night scott!
mic drop
😄 thanks all!
I hope I don't need a 400... that is the only Pi I don't have. 🙂
I think he would start with the 4 and maybe the Zero.
my plan is to start with a cm4 on an io board
I would hope it would work on the Zero!
LOL
Walk time for me, bai!
I'll have to wait for my Piunora I guess.
Thanks @rapid hornet!
@smoky island - are you having a show tomorrow at 10:00 CT??
yep will be starting up the stream in about 40 min.
Streaming some work on cookiecutter and CircuitPython utilities this morning. Hang out here in the chat, and follow along on twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf5IOC78FnI
Cool, joining now
Good morning, foamyguy!
Afternoon all. Listening and lurking.
Morning all! (and afternoon and evening as needed) How's everyone doing
Not too bad at all, got an ama going on the subreddit and it's going smoothly. How's the etch-a-sketch been? I had to replay show and tell and it looked great!
🇸🇪 👋
That is really in depth! Nice job!
you gotta be really careful with breaking conventions, compatibility with circup and circuitpython-build-tools will be broken too
like it is in this case https://github.com/circuitpython/CircuitPython_Org_Bundle/issues/3
The pypi name of displayio_annotation in the json file is incorrect setup.py says circuitpython-displayio-annotation the json file says "pypi_name": "circuitpython-org-di...
yup, it's the one used by the bundler
(and circup in the future)
I mean bundle-fly
oh yeah the bundler finds the includes in the files right ?
the issue is when requirements are expressed as the pypi name, and those don't connect with the repo/module
circup only knows pypi names if they are prefix-circuitpython-name (pypi) -> prefix_name (module)
but that will be fixed when it moves to using the json file
except the json file is wrong as I mentioned in the issue
now the reason people might use the pypi name is if the module is in the requirements for another module, because for blinka compatibility theses are expressed as the pypi names
at least currently
no not yet, it only tries to remove circuitpython in the center
when I'm finished with adding 3rd party bundles I'll probably move to make circup use the json file
anyway I feel like I derailed you with all that sorry
It's an informative derailment 😄
yeah it should
you have to make circuitpython-build-tools find the pypi name if it was changed manually from the default (the default is repository_name.replace("_","-"))
maybe replace circuitpython-org- or replace only if it's at the start of the string. Otherwise if somebody makes a module in the community bundle named: "something-circuitpython-organizer" they will have a surprise
I would do it like that
thing = re.sub(r"^circuitpython-org-", "circuitpython-", thing)
^ means: at the start (of the string, or line if multiline regex)
That's a weird learning curve right there, nice job getting a solution though
Ah the fun joys of moderation and the 'Well now I need to drop things and address that' stuff. No worries thanks for helping clean it up!
Thanks for the nice chill stream!
Thank you!
Thanks all, have a great weekend everybody!
Have a great weekend everybody
On a circuitpy implementation that does not work what removal can be done to make a clean install? In other words, what is the maximum recovery scheme?
I'm guessing dropping a fresh UF2 and reformatting would be
@midnight plinth some other troubleshooting steps towards the bottom: https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/troubleshooting depends on which board, perhaps which version of CircuitPython is on there, and exactly what isn't working (does CIRCUITPY mount? can you get to the REPL? Can you get into Safe Mode? etc.)
@strong acorn Thanks for responding. I have a Feather RP2040 with a 128x64 Featherwing and was trying to get a program to work. the display worked but after trying to make it do what I wanted it stopped and I tried to load the 1107 example and got blank screen so I thought of reloading the firmware but was worried that if I did it wrong I would brick the processor. I have a green, yellow, and flasing blue that repeats. I'll try the uf2 but wondered if there was any garbage that needs to be removed.
@midnight plinth flashing color lights generally means that there is an error in your code, it's best to hook up to a serial console to access the REPL and see errors. What computer type are you using, and what editor? Mu and a couple of other editors have a built-in serial console, or there are separate applications. More here: https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/kattni-connecting-to-the-serial-console
Desk of Ladyada - Stemma Sunday ATtiny dev board & UPDI wrapup https://youtu.be/9OP-LejN0Ok
OK we finally spent a few hours and finished up our UPDI stand-alone programming code. That means we can start releasing some ATtiny8xx designs because we will be able to program/test them nice and fast. First up is a basic breakout with QT connectors. Let's maybe put together a tester?
The Great Search - Alternative for CP2014 USB to UART
http...
Hewwo!
Reminds me of the C64, where there was 64Kb of RAM but to access it all you had to swap out ROM that occupied the same address space
vroom!
Cp2102 is drop in for cp2104?
Which library best for parsing uart ? (For M2M)
question about the circuit python provisioning over bluetooth... is there anything yet that i can use? about to jump back into a project using a huzzah feather. had started in c, but python looks better at this point. and wireless updates would be wonderful.
Pretty certain its still a work in progress. Haven't seen any PRs for it yet. Most the focus has been on getting 7.0.0 out at the moment
@nova totem ok thx. last i heard it mentioned i thought someone said they'd love to have people trying to use it. thought i'd check while lady ada is online. 🙂
Question—
You could ask in circuitpython-dev someone in there would know for sure
i was headed that way when i realized the show was still on.

Just used my new Super Scissors... Wow. They're almost like the shears I use to cut sheet metal, but SHARP! I don't think I'll use them for everything due to the micro seriations, but they cut things like a hot knife thru butter! They shall be prized family heirlooms, along with my titanium scissors...
MicroSD adapter? Butter.
Happy Tuesday!?
it's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to. But I don't want to cry. So there.
58 years young
I realize no one is here. I am talking to myself. Again.
Thank's Cuppa.
I like to come here to feel young again!
Happy Birthday @ionic garnet ! 🍰
Is JP the Rebellious Radio? Transmitting on all pirate frequencies?
Or are those actually bear claws clamped onto his ears via very sturdy straws? Let's find out!
🐻
Bleeps and bloops are a go
Bleepin' and a'bloopin'
Good afternoon.
YT is alive with that disco beat!🕺
Hellooooo
PIRATE RADIO WOOOO
Hey I say!
hey!
😁
That's a costume change that broadway would be impressed with 🙂
Speaking of mysteries, what mysteries lie behind the board behind JP?
wow 53 episodes! more than a year of PPotW
I could build my own numbers station.
Calling the Los Angeles FCC now...
I heard it on the X
So does it need to have a headphone input, or can it play files from CP?
I think the demos are selling me on this
"Clap for the Wolfman"
haha totally make a "haunted radio"
🇸🇪 👋
If you had multiple set up together, you could have it "jump" between radios in a haunted house -- each module talks to one radio, and you could have blank audio sent to the ones you want to be quiet, and the "live" audio to the one you want to talk, and have them switch frequencies to switch radios
JP has a Jeep? :O
This board can also check for available (very local) frequencies.
lol
When I was a teenager, I built a linear amp from a library book. Got a visit by black vans!
Finally a use for all the clock radios & boomboxes in thrift stores!
Can it play audio without a 3.5mm device?
We gotta move these fm transmitters. We gotta move these RDBs!
Thanks JP
Thanks JP
Thank you!
Danke JP !!!
Thanks @haughty quiver
@teal river no, it's designed to play incoming audio from the line in (pins or 3.5mm jack)
Ahh, gotcha. Ordered 2!
And the polymide tape I keep forgetting XD
Been thinking I should get it for weeks, finally decided to just throw it in the cart for whenever I made an order, lol
I was so close to a larger order threshold, so I had to scramble to add a couple things before checking out as outro was playing.
I need to be more prepared. lol
Don't we all XD
I think one of the first things I'm going to do is test reading the signal with my SDR receiver. Because... um... why not? 🙂
I'm gonna try using mine to get funky interference effects for audio
Then I can record crystal-clear audio and mess with it to get glitchy effects just the way I want them
Greetings, good people.
Hey y'll
good morning, afternoon, evening and night folks!
☕️⚡️
I see Zombies in our future...
Good morning everyone.

Cool.
nice touch on the tombstone
I print Flex on my Ender 3 Pro all the time. Just some temperature adusts and retract.
what retracts do you use? Do you recall? I was having issues but ran out of time to play with it
@nova totem Temp up to 235 and 1.0 retract. I do have a dual gear drive for the extruder and that may make a difference.
Prusa's and UM2+ print FLEX very good on defaults settings.
I also make sure that the spool is very loose.
TPU
I have an Ender 5 I just had it clog up in the extruder. But ran out of time to really figure out why.
maybe the speed?
Never messed with initial layer. I think I will next print.
Adheres to glass well also.
yeah I should look at print speed and just the gears on the extruder and how tight they are or if something else grabbed elsewhere
30 for print speed works for me but I haven't tried to print it faster.
Yes, it does adhere to glass, QUITE WELL!
yes PEI, have to be careful that it does'nt stick too well, but it works
that's my experience
I've been printing at 30 for bed temperature. Perhaps I should bump that up.

nice
Combine that with a TV-B-Gone.
Does slidder change sound?
M4 has the speed to really make sound work better, it can be tough with slower processors (at least in my experience)
if you have bouncy spheres made with that programmable filaments from autodrop3d protopasta and 3dprinted nerd could be nice addition to it

Thank you for your time guys. Always learning.
thanks folks! cya tonight 🙂
@rocky reef @hard hollow Thanks for a great show guys
Thanks and see you all tonight.
thanks so much for hanging out folks!
Great show, as always, @hard hollow and @rocky reef 😀
Thanks guys, great to be able to watch live again
its fun fun fun
Bye and See Ya later !
@hard hollow Can you say what size magnets you used in your upcoming 'star trek' project?
They looks like basic neodymium magnets (rare-earth magnets). They're pretty cheap and easy to get. And they're strong.
They're holding a project together that I have had outside for almost a year and no issues
@nova totem agreed, but they come in different sizes. I just want to start ordering my magnets to get a step ahead due to delivery time.
I use them alot. I'm limited in my supply. lol
ah gotcha. They're really awesome
yes, they save time in not having to screw stuff down
Right? They're great!
@rocky reef I'm not sure I heard the link to the discord server today at 1:28 at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1149441310?t=00h01m28s - eventually searched and foud the link at https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/07/20/adafruit-is-on-discord-discordapp-adafruit-discord-adafruit/
The slight difference in the leverage point and size of the handles makes a HUGE difference!
I'm glad you're enjoying them 🙂
I shall shear all the micro SD card adapters.... Mwahahahahaha
Hey y'll
Excite! I have a THING to SHOW!
Come on by! Show! Tell! https://streamyard.com/ayvx94wgui
Good evening all you wonderful folks!
Uh oh. Is Lars guest hosting the S&T? Did you ask him kindly to not eat any of the internet cables? And did he snarl at you in response?
Good evening
Good evening everyone.
This IS the year of Linux on the desktop
How do I get on show and tell?

No spoilers for The Suicide Squad! ;P
Super slick project! That would really creep people out 😄
@lofty mist interesting Shawn. So you can customize your OS to a point. is that correct?
Yes...that's the idea behind things like Buildroot and Yocto Project. They let you customize a Linux distribution to include or not include certain features (drivers, packages, etc.). You can also include your own custom applications.
@lofty mist Very nice work. that seems interesting to learn. thanks for sharing. I'll look out for the digikey videos.
Most welcome! I hope they help!

For folks that may be interested in more easing helper functions that kmatch created a while back here: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_DisplayIO_Layout/blob/main/adafruit_displayio_layout/widgets/easing.py
ahah thanks Scott!
That was awesom!
Super cool robot!
These "smart home devices" are getting more invasive 🕷️
Oh cool! I didn't know about that! Thanks @smoky island. And if anyone wants to see a slightly different approach to easing (there's a few common ways), here's the code I showed: https://github.com/todbot/circuitpython_invaders
They're perching themselves on unsuspecting makers' heads! 🙂
Great to see Odd Jayy here
I might explode with nervous and/or excited
nervous for sure
dONT BE LOL
Phew, I didn't break it, lol
I was in a PANIC because everything did break before the show XD
Got it all fixed just as Odd_Jayy got on!
JP needs ALL the thanks!
@north harness Love the spider hat bot 😄
well i watch also inspation4 launch right now and its almost launch
@lofty mist you know I have spider love 😛
Mmm, modules...
odd jay might have all bots as spiders
Oh yeah, @north harness , your little buddy is so cool! I can't believe it only took a Trinket!
I try to love them! 😛
Thanks for sharing everyone
Thank you JP for your time
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.

Jayy's spider-bot pal was sooo cool!
think i got the clippin' to go away
@teal river I love using perma protos to make projects more durable. Nothing like pulling out an old breadboarded project and trying to figure out where this escaped wire goes.
Lol, certainly good if you don't plan to modify but aren't going away from breadboard format. But the vast majority of my projects end up being converted to more compact forms

"not recommended for new designs"?
@teal river Yeah, I often cut perma protos for that reason; will probably be doing custom PCBs at some point
@haughty quiver OMG a custom faux numbers station! I love those
@haughty quiver Sounds like "Mars Attack'
Sounds like a good way to end up on an NSA watch list.
Question: Do y'all have the material information for the packaging of Adafruit products? Particularly the pink and foggy clear sealed bags? I'd like to try recycling the bags that aren't zippered, but it's a lot easier knowing exact materials
Fair. I usually just do point to point wiring or design a PCB
@teal river most/all things we use are, but i'll see what i can find
Thanks. I should specify I'd like to know what materials they are so I can recycle them and make things with them myself [my area doesn't do recycling of plastic film/bags for some dumb reason]
multiple returns blew my mind when I first learned of them 🤯.
Scott Show starring Scott is one of my favorites
@smoky island Many happy returns,

Question: I have a 2.7" SHARP memory display that I'd like to be able to see at night; any recommendations on how to best light it?
Flashlight?
I knew someone was gonna say that :P
maybe a small piece of edge-lit acrylic
That's one of the things I was thinking, just wasn't sure how well that would work -- not sure if it would diffuse the light enough to reflect to the display and out?
slightly abraded; more so at the edge distant from the LED
Abraded on the edge?
Hmm... How would I go about doing that without making it look bad?
I'd use a laser cutter/etcher if handy, otherwise, steel wool probably
I've done it before using a gradient of halftone dots laser etched on the surface
Disney Adafruit Museum!
Disney is building a movie set at our local park.
live chat for the stream is over here, right?
Do they make really fine steel wool? I don't have a working laser cutter/etcher right now
@teal river I just now googled front lit reflective display and looked at images; there may be some off-the-shelf diffusers
@covert needle yep
Ohh, cool. If you see one in particular, link please! Lower price better XD
ah, thanks! so, all questions goes here?
yep! we get to the questions at the end mostly, but OK to ask any tme too
ah, thank you!
Huh, I didn't know there was a black HallowWing
@teal river Something like this might work, modified to peel off the reflector:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1621
@teal river Brown paper bag is what I use when steel wool is too coarse. Wad it up and scrub.
Screwing in Starro's arms while the eye is active feels....disconcerting. Like I expect them to ask "Whatcha doin' to me?"
@teal river How/where will the display be used?
What is the best way to desolder? I tried it for the first time today and made some mistakes and need to remove terminal blocks. 😫 Thank you!
Hmm, wonder if I can cut that down...
Ohh, I didn't think about that, I'll keep that in mind
In a smart watch type application [wrist mounted]
@teal river I'm betting it's something like acrylic, in which case you could score it and break off a piece
@teal river Cigar ashes work good too.
Yeah, it looks like just an LED with a reflector that focuses into the panel
I'd need access to cigar ashes, lol... brown paper bag I can do
Ohhhh, I need this enclosure! My last one got broken DX
Yep, it's edge lit; the light bounces between the flat surfaces, and when it hits an impurity/pit, it escapes.
At $2.95, I'm just gonna toss it in my cart and try it
Yep; I'd get a few so I have spares, and pay less effective postage. If it's not a rush, I order using first class mail for something like this.
I'll probably do bigger order next week XD this was an off week
I'm gonna build a weather station and just UV protect coat it!
@teal river https://www.instructables.com/Edge-Lit-Displays/
Although that's not really displays as much as it is signs....
@teal river For front lighting, I'd do a very light etching/degrading; that link just shows the principle
Ahh. Probably the brown paper bag scrub method
Question: Does Adafruit have any transflective displays? [the kind that are visible in sunlight like the SHARP memory displays, but also have a backlight for use at night]
Oooh I love transflective displays. Own several Pebble watches.
They're so awesome! My Garmin watch is transflective, and I love it

I thought it was "chi"
I’ve heard that too
Nobody knows how to say anything

You could make a magic trick with this, by sewing it the coil into your sleeve, and lighting up light bulb.

Question: if an open source business closes down, do you sometimes pick up their designs and make them?
I just love that this is possible
Same
I hate seeing awesome things die/disappear because they were closed source and the creating company went under
I’d honestly love if a company picked up the designs of my company, at least the ones that are popular

Lol

Not that I can find, unfortunately
ok thanks for looking
Lol, not this week... Needed a week off!
I have done more than one 'depression shopping trips' to Adafruit this pandemic. I don't recommend it, but I can't complain either. =P
I've kinda done the same
Parts and projects make me feel better
I just need more toys
Although it's more being able to do the projects than simply buying things that does that XD
I have added way too much stuff to my collection of random things I may or may not work on <_< But so much of it glows... how can I resist?
it comes without a rotary encoder soldered onto it if that is what you mean.
I keep ordering things in sets of 10 because JP is so dang convincing!
brb, gotta do a thing
@smoky island thanks I had ordered that but was un sure if the roterys were attached
Does anybody else keep an Adafruit Wishlist of "Things I Forgot to Buy Last Time"?
@jolly dune depression shopping trip. Mine was last week. over #300 in adastuff.+
I have that wishlist

Animal pictures!??
lol-ma
You could use that to transmit Lars' voice over the waves. 😶
❤️ circup
Crufty. Word of the day.
JP is on point today 😄
circup is very good
Super neat new-ish feature added by Jeff E: circup install --auto will check your code.py file and install any libraries it needs
What no I'm not late shhhh
low power radio we get
@teal river You missed Lars.
I miss nothing! Catching up XD Although I would not be saddened by a lack of Lars... >.>
You can buy such devices to transmit music from your MP3 player to you car radio.
I was using one for a while.
Ohhhhh, Circup sounds amazing...
Eurorack modules are great at synthesizing credit card bills
People calling the legality of the FM transmitter into question... Do they think any sort of FM transmitter is illegal without a license? lol
I want this synth so I can do spoop music
saw you on show and tell yesterday @teal river I feel like I met you! Unfortunately I wasn't on the show live
I watched it about 1am last night
Yeah that pip-boy project is cool.
This is why I haven't jumped in head first.
Glad you saw :D I'm so glad I had SOMETHING working!
Indeed. I love meeting other nerds (I mean that in the most positive context)
Very cool mix. The radio is in the left channel.
Are there DIY/open source EuroRack modules?
I find it very funny and meta that JP is using a eurorack module that is playing WAVs of old broadcast radio thru a modern I2C-based FM transmitter to broadcast to a real FM radio
convoluted
Lovely
Do you mean something like this? https://winterbloom.com/
Like, schematics to build them... I'd hope they can be made without giving up an arm, leg, and a body
it is open source: https://github.com/wntrblm/Big_Honking_Button (and open hardware)
Left? Right? That doesn't work for us handicapped peeps. 🙁
@haughty quiver Have you considered mounting the transmitter in its own eurorack module? Would love to see a module with a telescoping antenna.
oh yes, there are many! Almost all of these are https://mutable-instruments.net/modules/
"This is Lars Radio Station!"
And here's a very simple Eurorack module that uses just a Trinket https://github.com/todbot/TrinketTrigger/
Radio KRC. We only play Randomly Confusing content.
Ahh, yes, perfect!
JP, you should design a whole suite of EuroRack modules!
Adafruit modules XD
Heating AC? Sounds like chaos magic
Lars - spotted.
I saw a leg
He's right behind you...
JP, why do you let Lars stay when he upsets you too? XD
Haha, JP mentioning the same things everyone recommended me
And Music Thing Modular's Radio Music (the WAV player JP showed) is open source: https://musicthing.co.uk/pages/radio.html
squee!
@last steppe 👍
You're famous!
I'd like to use 1 of these to play holiday music in sync with house decorations, but I have 100 feet of frontage. Is there a way to expand coverage (within legal limits, of course!) with multiple antennae?
@cinder wind 👍
Probably the easiest way would be to have 4 of them that just have the same source fed into them
I save MANY files on each CP device, lol
It has touch pads!
Save 'em all!
code_final_final_rev2_final.py
most of my circuitpython devices have dozens of files named code_[something_descriptive_hopefully].py and I will rename code.py back and forth all the time.
"A" touch is analog CV output, "B" touch is on/off ("gate") output
Screwdriver time!
haha get it right sucka or it fries! (actually I think nothing will happen)
JP, you can get a new iPad Mini if you want something bigger than your phone but not huge :O
I had to dig but realized stargirl did all open source, so yes, that's what I was looking for XD
I think you can buy others with more power for range (but still legal). Otherwise you'd have to sync several over distance, which isn't impossible but tricky
Yeah I thought so 😛
JP, where do you get all these samples?
And are the samples grungy files, or is it just because it's via the radio and then being picked up by a mic?
Certainly willing to try that. Any concerns about interference between the radios?
oh good old voice synthesis
If they're all on the same frequency, shouldn't be an issue
Most of the sounds sound like the sounds that MusicThing has collected for the Radio Music module: https://github.com/TomWhitwell/RadioMusic/wiki/Audio-for-the-SD-Card
Looking at Winterbloom and todbot's stuff, it looks like you could make a EuroRack synth for "cheap" if you're willing to work on it!
Gr8! Thx!!
Record your own samples from WebSDR: http://www.sdrutah.org/ for example.
who here has an FM radio in their home?
I have two, but I use niether.
TomWhitwell's page says 4.9GB for the "8GB" bundle, lol
Yes, three (I think) seldom used FM radios and one SDR here. Have a couple of old iPods with FM capability.
So far no working links
Hmm, the Google Drive link is the only one that works, 7.2GB
Number stations are still a thing
Some number stations have been updated with fresh new voices on digital radio :O
Thanks JP!
Good show!
I have a small battery portable for the zombie apocalypse.
Seeya!
Thanks @haughty quiver
Thanks JP
Excellent and fun workshop today @haughty quiver . Thanks!
late to the party
Great show as always, @haughty quiver
was there a coupon today?
I think I need a FM radio for that too 🙂
📻
I made this on VCV Rack:
That's only JP's Pick of the Week and Ask an Engineer that get coupons
Zombies only listen to AM talk radio.
I like the outro sounds.
sorry @spiral vale I was not coupon-ful today
ack!
