The only thing better than a nice mechanical key is, perhaps, FOUR mechanical keys that also can glow any color of the rainbow - and that's what the Adafruit NeoKey 1x4 QT I2C ...
Of course. Who else? 😶
Just trying to imagine what recipes Lars would have...

Keycaps look great!
wow, nice
Does anyone know how to make the silicone molds for resin casting?
I wooden think that would work...
next to engrave the top of the wood keys
Hmm, an othermill is on the long-term wishlist 🙂
it's really impressive what you can do with one
That is just awesome! wood !
(late) hi from Costa Rica
What wood you make if you had an OtherMill?
Pecan make it
[unrelated -- I missed out on a used entry level XCarve machine the other day....grr]
bantam tools have new addons for CNC desktop what helps too
I’d love an xcarve
I'm pining for one of those...
There just some gorgeous keycaps.
My university maker space had some OtherMill that i used for a while until covid hit
Want to make terrible noises w/ awful flashing colors? Yeah me too. But if you want glitchy scritchy noises in #CircuitPython using just PWM, here's a little toy for the MacroPad RP2040: https://t.co/L12RWFoZSW https://t.co/fz3zIvFEtD
I'd love to make custom routed signage with an xcarve -- or even mini signs with an othermill.
Sounds like what I need for my Halloween setup
factory fixturing for CNC desktop is kinda cool what also are low profile
nice!

Thanks and see you all tonight.
thanks so much for hanging out folks!
this is cool https://www.crealitycloud.com/model-detail/17212 as Creality have it 3d model cloud now

Wrong Noe
Haha
@sour ridge sorr about that
What did steampunk Little Red Riding Hood say to the big bad mechanical wolf? ||"Oh, Grandma, what big gears you have"||
Haha
It would be cool if there was an adabox based around world literary day where @haughty quiver was Edgar Allen Park. (A play on Edgar Allen Poe) and it would include a big E-Ink display kit kind of thing and a guide to pull pages of public literature like Shakespeare or other classical authors
a circuitpython ebook reader pre-loaded with public domain classics?
Yeah
while the name is great, I suspect that Poe's racism is a big enough blot on his record that Adafruit wouldn't pick him as the model for John's character.
er wait I"m thinking of Lovecraft
I don't know about Poe in particular
Poe had his own issues
J.P.Lovecraft to be precise
Wikipedia doesn't cover Poe's politics or it did so quickly enough that my eyes glossed over it
It appears Poe only danced around politics
He did have issues with anti slavery movements but his writings don’t necessarily make it clear his absolute position so we can only theorize
Or at least that’s what I just read from MUSE at Johns Hopkins University
Show N Tell will be awesome tonight, I can tell 🙂
get reeeeady folkssss
Hey y'll
Good evening everyone
Good evening all you wonderful folks!
Good evening everyone.
Good evening!
Hewwo uwu
Good afternoon/evening
Good evening everyone 👋
I won’t make it on Show N Tell this week but here’s what I would have shown if I came on:
hello
Hi JP!
Hello
I shall make Forbidden Tacos
Me too.
Hello to all! Happy Wednesday Night!!!
Soon™️
I forgot it was lower only XD
Recently I noted your profile photo is GitHub.
Hotdogs are just tacos made with sausage and bread
My profile photo is me, lol
IO goodies!!!
Hmmm, Kevin looks familiar...
You’ll never be able to think of hotdogs the same way
🎃
I dont think I've ever done a halloween project, this might be the year.
👹 Rawr.
Altho tacos use tortillas, which aren't bred bred
I have plans for a Halloween project
I have ideas for a Halloween project
Tortillas are a flatbread
I don't think I have either
Show is still going, so... maybe?
I want to use my PixelLeaf RP2040 to make a Halloween skull with some eyes animated on some Adafruit TFTs
@teal river that's awesome!
ty
What, JP? Yeah, JP is awesome XD
tyvm
I'm making a split keyboard using the Ortho snap-aparts, probably will show next week or the week after
God that back panel is BEAUTIFUL @haughty quiver !
@haughty quiver To preserve a fully-populated and unbroken layout, are keytops available that could span two key switches?
So Scifi
That the show is still going.... JP's notorious streams! LOL
🍰
@inner spade unfortunately I don't think there are any keycap sizes larger than 1u that have stems to fit the 1u grid.
Five years!
Ah. Probably would increase the key pressure anyway.
Thanks!
we are happy you are here @rapid hornet !
Congrats @rapid hornet that's an awesome run of 5 years
🎉
@rapid hornet I'm sorry if you said it and I missed it, but what software were you using to monitor the USB bus?
Oh, @haughty quiver do you know where I might be able to get custom sized keycaps? I'm making a weird split keeb that will have odd length keys if I can manage them
Great job @autumn fulcrum
Thank you skerr 🙂
you're awesome 🙂
Mmmm nice toy
cool, thanks 🙂
That’s nifty
😉
@teal river did you ever have luck with printing keycaps? keyv2 can customize to any width you want.
I have a keypad going with some 1U and 2U keys, maybe it'll be showable next week
Ohh, durr, I should try NOT with the baby printer with the 0.8mm nozzle, lol. I just set up my Ender 3 V2 and have it printing perfectly, I should try that
I would like cast tho...
"data center" won't do protocol decoding with the beagle 12
Ohhh, Charliplexing, that's something you don't see a lot anymore
@teal river you could also take a look at https://www.wasdkeyboards.com/products/keycaps/printed-keycap-singles.html they have a variety of sizes
Printed Keycap Singles
That's a nice looking LED module Karl & Chelsea
not all the possible sizes though
Very nice!
Yeah, that site came up in research, but they seem to just have the standard sizes I think it's in U and 0.5U increments, I'm looking for weird sizes, like 1.122U or something
I have ideas for my company
I have many ideas for companies XD
Here's an idea: hire me :O
Lol
you may have to cast your own, then. good luck @teal river !
Lighting companies have many bright ideas 💡
When I can hire myself, I’ll hire you 😂
Which RGB chip?
Yeah, I think so, lol. Probably gonna use that site to print custom sizes and then cast
I reinvest my “share” back into new products
I think he's trying to hypnotise us with all them pretty colours!
Hopefully soon and not soon™️
RIP show
they mentioned being in silicon valley
And being a small company that makes analog chips
Great work everyone. Thanks for sharing.
I think they mentioned it toward the beginning, but not certain.
Thanks everyone for sharing, and special thanks to @hard hollow and @rocky reef for hosting tonight!
Thank you to all who make these possible
That’s got a great show
Rewinding real fast
Great show tonight thanks for showing the neat projects everyone and Noe & Pedro for hosting!
nice.
They just said "a small Silicon Valley startup that does analog chips"
thanks so much for showing awesome projects tonight folks!
Thanks for hosting!
Nice demos, but it really helps to mention at least basic context at the beginning, and share important specifics
We seemed to have had a network connection problem, but we'll join again next week to finish!
I think it would be a great employee.
Congrats, @old glen !
By the way, we forgot to mention our company, it's www.kinet-ic.com
That was some really smooth animation, @old glen
Are you selling currently or still developing?
both these chips are in mass production
Do you have distributors setup?
KTD2058, KTD2059, KTD2060, KTD2061 36-Channel RGB LED Driver with I2C
mouser
Perfect! 🙂
We didn't get to mention our fade engine yet, which is a really awesome feature
I have ideas and I’ll be using them soon
@old glen nice demo. it looked like most of the stream went OK. it only started having issues near the end.
Thanks 🙂
the smaller chip is KTD2052 for 4 RGBs
I'm tempted to buy a few even though I don't think I could solder a 3x3mm chip 😄
Stencil and solder paste 🙂

Thanks for showing this in show n tell. I have some inspiration and new idea for my company 🙂

And here’s the evaluation kit:
So, are we going to see the starro of the show at some point?
Question: How do I curb my Adafruit addiction? I spend more on y'all than anything else XD
You don’t
You eventually become an Adafruit employee
That’s the outcome
Shoot for the starros, and if you miss, you probably won't land on the moon due to orbital mechanics. 🌜
Hello everybody!
I dream
Doctor basically have lair of adafruit products right?
It's very possible.

I'm sad that the Home Depot talking bird is, currently, sold out. I want to hack it to say different things.
Question: Is there any chance we might get high res [~1080p] small [~5-7"] screens to work with the Pi and other HDMI SBCs?
I’m seeing boards and remembering I need to order parts for upcoming boards
oooo, now I want to watch that episode of Desk of Ladyada -- always interesting to learn the reasoning behind design decisions.
Usually those lessons are learned the hard way, and that can help make us all better.
Talking bird?
One moment please
Bird! (thank you 🙂 )
@river peakBackordered! Darn!
Lol
Lars spot
Teddy
Yeah! If anyone knows of something similar from a different source, please let me know. I'm not beholden to Home Depot as a source, I just want a simple bird to fiddle with.
Yay 200!
Agreed! That would be fun!
JP 200!!!!!!

So are Zeldas
Lol
OK, so now that the link is here, is Zelda going to be saved?
I'm watching the live stream right now. That's how I found the link to the discord.
Gah, @waxen thistle beat me to it
I want a Scott/JP crossover show, lol
Occasionally JP is a guest on Scott's show 🙂
Not going to lie, there's a lot of Twitter recently that's. not great (Not exactly a conversation for here, though)
We do what we can to make it a better place.
I've heard good things about it!
Aha! The Starro of the show!
So THAT'S how it happened!
It's a violent film with harsh language (fair warning) -- but it's worth a watch 🙂
I spotted an Adafruit board in an escape room. Part of the decoration was an ItsyBitsy that had been burnt out (so they told me after)
Vector displays are wild
Hallowing just went out of stock today...urgh...
They're really cool
Lol
Digikey got em!
One of my managers when I worked at Micro Center had a Vectrex he kept on his desk, lol
I've never encountered a "real" one but I've seen a few videos. Knowing how they work it's just. fascinating
Love Knobs!!!!
Will Colin ever make it back to a landscape format?
Collin is so darn sharp and his voice… makes it so soothing to learn about electronics
Collin is magic
Yes
I'm old school, I still sit at a computer to watch these videos. 🙂
I watch a lot on my phone, but I can't say I want to watch it vertical XD
Who says my atten... squirrel..
We also need a round format. Perfect for a hacked Nest thermostat.
I'm surprised nobody has come up with a way to frame videos for either
Carl Sagan-esque voice.
I do like the quick bit format
My thoughts exactly
I'm sure someone will get a-round to it
Hi everyone!!
Or my watch
I really want to do a project with a round display like a watch
"So easy even a squirrel could do it" - That's what my dog likes to snark.
Question: What would you suggest doing with something like a 1st gen Raspberry Pi that still works, but isn't up to whatever task you originally had it for and upgraded?
For some reason I read this in Gimli's voice.
...I need to watch LOTR again sometime.
Hehehehe, yes, you do
staroids is addictive.
it's crazy watching the air quality outside of my house change with the smoke.
Same. I’ve mostly been looking at the weather channels AQI
SLC had the worst air in the world a week or two ago
I saw this on Twitter, it's really cool!
CP is super easy to add new boards too
It really is. Not having to compile anything is amazing
It’s perfect for maker companies
and being able to just test things out with the REPL is invaluable.
MacroPad can do ANYTHING!!
Adding boards to Arduino is very ambitious
I was literally holding an Arduino when I learned of CP and threw it across the room, lol
Yeet!
There's stuff for Arduino that's really nice, but. Well. CP is just so much friendlier.
Make it all easy please @open girder !
No more making ten programs called test1... test2... etc.

I’m hoping to submit my first board to OSHW in the coming month
@open girder I agree, y'all make it ACCESSIBLE, not easy. Easy is plugging things together and they work... things like the MacroPad with great examples make it simple to get into it, but are open to SO much more complexity.
Didn't even dream of trying coding before CP!
Test, wait for program to compile, yep, it compiles and there's no errors, now to upload it to the board, and Oh cool, yeah, it is detecting this i2c device. Time for another test
That is way too accurate to a lot of my life
Heck, even if it is making it easy, easy isn't a bad thing.
It's real simple to do!
Easy means we save time, our most valuable resource.
Ohhh steamy factory footage
Scandalous
Yeah! Nothing wrong with easy! I don't understand the gatekeeper mentality
Life Goals: I want to write software that's in use on another planet.
Disney's Adafruit Museum is gonna be HUGE!
What about the moon? :O
Code. In. Spaaaaaaaace
That works too. Or even in orbit of a moon or planetary body. But "on" a planet? chef's kiss
Nice idea.
So earlier in the show, they mentioned that something from Adafruit was in The Mandalorian. Is there a link to this story?
Oh... Glados....
I remember you. Actually not Glados, I forgot the name of this robot
Wheatley and the Space Core
Thank you!
I am both a pretty big Star Wars & Adafruit fan so this is two of my loves together!
Check out all the various Star Wars-themed projects on https://learn.adafruit.com 🙂
a lot of folks at adafruit are star wars fans, star trek, marvel, dc, really a lot of different things like that, so it's always neat to see the stuff we make here used by the best in the biz 🙂
I should print this, my MiniMacroPad I use for work is literally a loose NeoKey 1x4 and a loose QT Py RP2040, lol
(I actually wrote a book on how to apply Jedi philosophy to your real life in a beneficial way)
Star Marvel Trek Wars!
Once used a bunch of Adafruit stuff to make a wookie voice box with triggers in the gloves.
overheard in the Mandalorian prop room:
no! this neopixel goes there, that one goes there! right?!
Nice job @hard hollow !
@hard hollow Link please, my loose setup is crying for a case XD
This is a problem I've dealt with previously. It's A pain
Question: What do y'all use for DNS?
Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out where I'm at in a room, so I can see how a computer has a challenge with it.
1.1.1.1
@teal river 8.8.8.8
That's why I remembered this company name, I was looking into a project with locating sensors indoors
I remember when you couldn't get hyper-accurate GPS in the US because it was illegal for civilians to own such accurate GPS modules
I have to try the 1.1.1.1 I'll try it and check it in a packet decode
I've generally been using 8.8.8.8 because it works and I'm too lazy to investigate other options XD
The math is amusingly simple
Really just set 1.1.1.1 as primary and 8.8.8.8 as secondary.. no reason other than they both seem fast and are easy to remember...
I do a lot of go-karting at an indoor track and thought this would be neat to have (there are commercial options but what's the fun in that!)
Perfect for indoor localization for drones.
DNS request doesn't require very large packets, its small traffic per client
Turret!
i want a DIY STEM project for an 11 year old, what is good? he likes retro gaming so i want to get him a retro gaming diy. i also want him to solder.

I think a RealSense camera was a very early Eye on NPI .. saw this headline today. not every good idea pans out. https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/21/08/18/2035201/intel-is-giving-up-on-its-ai-powered-realsense-cameras
In a statement to CRN, Intel said it was "winding down" RealSense and transferring the talent and computer vision tech to efforts that "better support" its core chip businesses. Adafruit 1.69" 280x240 Round Rectangle Color IPS TFT Display - ST7789 https://www.adafruit.com/product/5206
My watch is a circle XD
I like little displays. They're cute.
This is why I've purchased like 20 displays in the last couple months XD
Question: I’m making an E-Ink display board and I was wondering if the 20V Schottky diodes are okay vs the 30V ones they have listed? Trying to use what I already have. I’ll probably get the mbr0530 but I have a lot of 0520
The corners looking the same in memory but being rounded with those pixels "missing" physically is exactly what phones do. Take a screenshot on a Pixel 2 XL and export, it'll have corners filled in!
@teal riverSo that's where they went...
Question for the show I built a bistable transistor circuit over the weekend, and used the NRF PPK2 Profiler for checking the power consumption: Does 8mA seem excessive for just a few NPN transistors, resistors and Caps? *AND Any tips on how to make it lower power (around 3v) for a battery project ?
Question: has Adafruit considered diving into 3D printing and trying to revolutionize that space?
Q: @open girder For all silicon that you have to import, have tariffs become predictable and can be factored into your bottom line? The government needs to kill silicon tariffs. Having tarrifs along with the crazy silicon shortage price gouging is nuts!
BAT
Bat's Awesome
@teal rivertHEY TRIED A LONG TIME AGO
GIB
you mean there are people who wouldn't get the pun ? That never happens !
I DESIRE BAT
Question: Is there like a point where you start selling more consistently product wise? Is just just talking about products a lot or providing enough products to make something with? I’m selling more each month but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m making more boards or more people see my stuff
or maybe their is a ghost in the machine!
@open girder any chance on usbc trinkey?
Ohh, 1080p DSI display for Pi would be great for me too
HDMI is nice for not Pi things, but I'll take what I can get!
Q: Any tips for how to store/transport Lipo batteries safely? Like a hard shell or something?
Ha, I can only remember the Google and Quad 1 DNS because they're all the same digits repeated XD
Gotta love the random facts you remember from 20+ years ago that have almost no use today
I'm sure @haughty quiver is readying a Theremin demo for the Proximity Trinkey.
its not easy being green (low power)
@teal river I'd suggest writing to support@adafruit.com for Adafruit trademark usage guidelines.
I'm really into 3D printing. I'm trying to get better at incorporating electronics into my prints.
Any chance there is something similar to an si4735 general coverage radio chip. They are obsolete but people use them with a nano for software defined radio.
I just bought my 5th printer XD
Here's my latest 3D printing project.
Oooh nice, @young hill
Ohhhh, do all those gears move? That's beautiful!
Q: Can you put Arduino and CP code on any given board?
Haha, the open box was dead... Just bit the bullet and spent the $50 more for a new one
@open girder Question from Twitch:
MATEinspires1: Recommend a chip to track quadrature encoder counts (high speed) that takes the weight off of a microcontroller? Maybe I2C?
LOL
Thanks! Nice show.
@sudden slate Both have minimum practical requirements for MCU speed, RAM, storage
Yes, all the gears work. It's controlled by an Arduino board, but I'm such a novice that the accuracy is just so. so.

g'night!
Thanks @open girder and good night. 🌔
Good show! Thanks!
Thanks @open girder for another excellent evening of shows! Special thanks to @hard hollow and @rocky reef for guest hosting Show & Tell!
Thanks! I'm gonna go hide from hurricane Grace now! 🙂
I mean can you have a .ino file and a .py file on a board and have them both work.
Good night all!
Adabox is adabot’s special move
Thanks!
Not at the same time, of course
Night!
I'm late getting to use my wippersnapper beta invite, but I have to say to anyone here get it, so easy to use. In a few minutes I had it installed and set up my funhouse with a small project so it tells me when the air quality outside has gotten poor. (Great job @gaunt plume )
Part of me is waiting for the Zener to explode

Share it on Github when you get it done 🙂
sorry I missed live shows today. I published a new episode of my podcast and Adafruit and THIS community is discussed. Here's a link on Apple Podcasts. I cover computing on the edge, IoT, maker, community, security/privacy... I shower Adafruit with unsolicited love. Why? Because I dig what they are doing: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/high-risk-high-reward-stories-from-my-life-in-technology/id1441157639?i=1000532328824
I’m seeing SI4735 chips as active and available on Digi-Key. Example:
Order today, ships today. SI4735-D60-GU – series RF Receiver AM, FM, SW-LW 153kHz ~ 279kHz, 520kHz ~ 1.71MHz, 2.3MHz ~ 26.1MHz, 64MHz ~ 108MHz - - PCB, Surface Mount 24-SSOP from Silicon Labs. Pricing and Availability on millions of electronic components from Digi-Key Electronics.
Oh I see. I thought it was "let's get this merged!"
At google they use wont fix as a reason to close bug but there are a feew types like won’t fix obsolete, won’t fix working as intended, won’t fix not reproducable and another i forgot. Lgtm is how they sign off on code reviews formally SWEs(software engineer) in big markets move around a bit between gigs so the terms move around and enter the company cultures.
Or vibrate just something
Vibrating would be less scary then exploding at least XD
Hey thats cool. I tried to find it before and was unable to. Thanks!
Something like that ? (enable audio)
Greetings, good people.

200 hellos for all y'all!
💯 💯
Lars has spawned 200 copies of himself to celebrate JP's 200th show.
Larseption?
hi there all!
Greetings, @haughty quiver

Hello and congrats on 200!
200 Bleeps and Bloops...
thank you kindly!!
bleeps and bloops on YT
Twitch is Bleeping and Blooping also.
Bit of stuttering on Twitch
Yep.
Will we get to see original JP kinescope films during the retrospective?
heh
200 down, 2000.... to go 🙂
hope the stream is non-glitchy, gonna let it warm up a bit
It's the 200 version...
200 hours of this
200th episodes generally have flashbacks, etc.
CONGRATS! 🎉
woooHOOO!!!!
💯 💯 🥳
mic audio is excellent. peaking at about -6dB
clean and clear
also streaming on mars
It's a bit twitchy (heh) but Ok.
good day JP from Sunny SE PA
I was told there would be cake 🎂
Mmmm. Cake.
How did you hear about the cake?!
Hi, @clear matrix
Hey Andy 🙂
JPT Hanks?
There's always cake. 😋
oh! I see how it is... (and serious that made me laugh out loud)

Lol.
I'm at least a couple seconds faster than AI.
See? I said Lars was Paddington's evil twin...
Hewwo! Sorry I'm late! Congrats on 200!
love the lars cameo
Nooo, not another code, I can't afford to buy more thing XD
Baddington
Lars Baddington
I can't place any more orders either. They're going to need a tractor trailer to bring all the Adafruit boxes to my house!
Can you afford to not buy more though?
Exactly!
Lars200
For the moment, yes XD
I think I have enough RP2040 devices for the next decade or so!
Lars not safe confirmed
mmmm... nice meaty center
I have 20 raw RP2040 To use, lol
gotta get at that meaty potentiometer center
Oh gosh
I have a lot of QT Py RP2040 and Tiny 2040 and itsybitsy and SparkFun and Seed and RPi Picos!
Lars has been chewing through the cable...
JPThanks
AAHHHH
Lol. Lars' ill fitting dentures.
I thank you for 200 episodes of edutainment.
Wait...
its Lars 2000 coming around the corner
gasp he tricked us into learning with fun?!
@waxen thistle You have Lars' cousins?
There is only one lars.
That we know of...
When you see 2 Lars, they are one in the same. Just time travel.
what if Lars have cloned and made minions what look like Lars
All are Lars, all are one
Thanks JP for giving us this great stream to come together around!
In the long run, we are all Lars.
"No one can tell you what The Matrix is... except John Park. He knows. Just watch his stream. He's hooked up The Matrix to a QT Py"
@haughty quiver can you show us wiring up the Ortho keys when you've snapped them to make a non-ortho layout?
Pretty much entirely unrelated, but I was sad to learn today that the toebeans keycaps don't fit on my low profile MX key switches. So.... no toebeans for me unless I come up with a good reason for a macropad (which for my use case, I still really haven't). 😦
You could get a NeoKey Trinkey...
I can't come up with a thing I would remember to poke another keyboard for yet.
Computer lock?
I'd type out :toebeans:, heh.
I have a mouse corner for that.
Habits are hard to break 😄
Lol.
I'm the same way I have this macropad and not quite sure what to do with it yet, besides maybe some sort of lock maybe
It doesn't have the tick mark
I have 4 x 4 Keybow from Pimoroni. Has built in 2040.
My MacroPad project is GitHub phrases I type a lot. Still trying to figure out 12 though. I have maybe 7 reasonably.
That's the key I was going to toebean. The backtick.
Ahh... Maybe you should just get a full height MX keyboard :P
This is the Way
Neat way of keeping hookup wire under control...
... where is my
keycap
Evening @clever summit
Hello @lavish patrol! Seon asked about you in his last stream.
JP, talk about your rubber-band, wing nut wire spool thing!
Still alive 👍
Might drop in again one day.
If the toebeans keycaps weren't so fancy, I could trim it back, but they're metal, so that's out. Maybe print an adapter, but I feel like there's no way to do that and not have it sticking waaaay up above the keyboard. So....... I need to figure out a reason to have some kind of external keyboard/macropad.
This is a good thing to be!
I have lost my
His last streams has been less annoying, @lavish patrol 🙂
Indeed. 😀
I have keycaps like those! Glorious has a version called Aura
here we go again
I wanna try Jade switches
I have a full set of Typewriter style keycaps I was never happy with. Too reflective. They are my terget for my key projects.
4 out of 5 dentists recommend using a keycap puller 🦷
Ouch.
maybe I'm too old but I must admit I don't get the fascination with macro keyboards!
"Un-lose" hmm
Macro or mechanical? XD
Mechanical sounds and feels nice
yes I like a good click
Macro can save you from complicated keyboard commands
though I like my Mac keyboard too
Thanks for your entertaining and informative style of show, We learn so much more from you. Good luck for the next 100 shows
Sure I get the value of macros, just not clear what everyone is doing with ALL the keyboards. I can see the midi use case, and maybe some function keys. It's all cool, just not the most fascinating thing to build IMO
Like, one piece of software I use has a combo that's Ctrl+Alt+Shft+Q+[1-4]+Enter, IN THAT ORDER, for a set of functions. Macropad can do that in 1 key. And in addition to your favorite keyboard!
I have a dozen keebs for my dozen computers
VHB tape for the QT Py!
I'm struggling to find a reason to have a macropad setup, in any use case that I would actually remember to use and not simply type out on my keyboard manually or keyboard shortcuts etc. So I kind of get where you're coming from.
what I really want is a way to use one keyboard to control all my computers. Like an uber KVM or something. 30 years ago I wrote some code to do something like that using IPX/SPX (back in the Novell NetWare days--yes, that long ago)
Macro keyboards are essential for laptop control during a band performance. We use a variety of prerecorded SFX and intros.
yes that use case I understand
I have old software called um... I've just gone blank on the name. Oi. Synergy!
These days I just use Remote Desktop or VNC or SSH a lot
They retracted their v2 of it because it was so bad, but 1 still works for me. Between Mac and Windows.
I think Synergy is still around?
no remote desktop for me (allergic to Windows, but ssh or VNC sometimes)
Or Barrier (https://github.com/debauchee/barrier) which is a fork of Synergy from before it became commericial and...weird
I got v2 for $14 or something so I am waiting to get 3 for having bought 2. Did not request my money back.
Lars - excited for the 200th episode. 😄
must add the obvious: little macro keyboards are excellent for filling with adobe premire pro commands
a real time-saver
Great minds and all that stuff 😉
I bleed Windows XD but yeah, remoting in makes a physical KVM less necessary... Plus you don't need to have all the systems close by (mine are in all 4 levels of my home)
AHH MY EYES
:P
It's a MIDI controller! It's a Lamp! It's a keyboard! It's a floor wax!
Lars 200
My work here is done. 😄
It's a dessert topping!
JP must be behind, lol
UPS just delivered a box from Adafruit to my front door. The driver put a treat for my dog on top. Cute!
Waiting for mine!
remember those terminator UI view for XR that could be lars view from lars eyes right
Doctor ordering again
Waiting for UPS to deliver electronics goods reminds me of the "Wells Fargo Wagon" scene in "The Music Man"
Lol
Box full of QT Py RP2040s!
Hehehe
(For later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8LHlJSBkg0&t=1s)
I just lost the stream
Me too
hit refresh
Same here
Buffering...
it's back
refresh worked
stalled out, hit refresh and you should get it back (YT)
buffer and it come back
👍
I have a few QT Py SAMD21 I don't know what to do with because I ordered them to be a MicroMacroPad, but they can't handle the libraries
YT is back after buffering
Back
just ordered a handful of samd qtpys with todays discount
samd21 great for arduino
as JP is showing here, QT Pys can do MacroPad stuff in Arduino, but you're right, difficult in CircuitPython. Also if you solder down the optional flash chip, you can do more (see "haxpress")
i'm making a little midi translator thingy
Haxpress is an option, but yeah.
Those are some nice keycaps
Folks who have 3D printed keycaps, how difficult is it? Seems like some pretty serious detail that goes into it.
Ohhh, didn't realize, thought it was the RP2040 Version
Probably gonna look into that if I can't find another use
thank you @haughty quiver
Thanks, @haughty quiver 😀
Thank you JP! you are a gift to the internets !!!
Yeah! JP 200!
Trying to assess how hard it would be to make a toebean adapter that doesn't make the key stick hugely off my keyboard. Pretty sure it's a no-go but still worth trying I guess.
Not possible with a 0.8mm nozzle, I can tell you that
Thank you @haughty quiver ! Happy 200th!
Thanks JP and congrats!!
Thank YOU for taking time for us.
@haughty quiver Thn
Thanks @haughty quiver !
@haughty quiver that's 200 up. 👍
of it's it's the RP2040 version you're set
With a 3d printer one of the best parts is it is pretty cheap to just try
@haughty quiver Congrats again on 200! 🥮
Thanks Lars for permitting @haughty quiver to make 200 excellent episodes!
Bye.
200 1 a Lars Oddessy
Congrats, @haughty quiver !
Can hear John's machine beeping at all the @haughty quiver messages (here's another, JP!)
Yeah, that's what I started with, wanted to move the project to the SAMD21 Version to free up the Rp2040 for other things
I can hear my cat yowling loudly in the hallway at nothing.
@teal river add the flash chip to the samd version?
(oop... that was suggested above)
They're even in stock https://www.adafruit.com/product/4763
Here's the guide I did on that: https://learn.adafruit.com/numpad-4000-mechanical-keyswitch-data-entry-device/assemble-the-numpad
Thanks :D
oh, darn I meant to. It is not very good but looks neat :)
If you need those extra built-in modules make doing the QT Py haxpress mod worth it. The extra modules enabled are: adafruit_pixelbuf, audiobusio, audiocore, audioio, displayio, fontio, pulseio, terminalio. Which means you can do audio and display stuff on a QT Py! But there's still not much RAM so you'll hit that pretty quick
I don't think the haxpress includes keypad
yeah no fancy new keypad looks like, so you'd have to use the pure Python adafruit_matrixkeypad: https://learn.adafruit.com/matrix-keypad/python-circuitpython
Does NeyKey use Keypad?
@teal river yeah https://www.adafruit.com/product/5157 is designed for keypad module in circuitpython
For folks who want ready-to-go keeb action, we've got the lovely Adafruit Macropad with a 3x4 grid of MX+NeoPixel key switches - but for those who like to forge their own path, we now ...
Haha, I forgot Ortho had "NeoKey" in the title. I meant this https://www.adafruit.com/product/4980
The only thing better than a nice mechanical key is, perhaps, FOUR mechanical keys that also can glow any color of the rainbow - and that's what the Adafruit NeoKey 1x4 QT I2C ...
that does NOT need keypad module just, busio.I2C and the right libs
Gotcha. Yeah, the 1x4 is what I couldn't use on the SAMD21
The NeoKey 1x4 should work fine on a SAMD21 CircuitPython board. From what I can tell, the only requirement of the adafruit_neokey library shown in the NeoKey 1x4 guide is I2C, which is available everywhere. What was the error you were seeing?
Can't remember... tried it like a month ago. I think it was running out of RAM?
hmm... I could believe that. Looking at adafruit_neokey, it uses adafruit_seesaw and that library is pretty big.
Yeah, I think it used seesaw, NeoKey, and HID to act as a keyboard, and it would crash when it got to the HID part. Could do seesaw and NeoKey without HID, But that wasn't useful, lol
I've definitely run out of flash space when installing adafruit_hid. To the point where I've hand copied just the files adafruit_hid/keyboard.mpy and adafruit_hid/keycode.mpy but not the rest of the files in that directory
Ohhh, if that's all I need to do keyboard stuff, then I just need to tweak a bit!
Awesome :D
You might have to learn more low level stuff than you'd like (bascally, extracting or rewriting just the parts of the libs you use) but you should be able to fit it into a standard qtpy. Depends on the value of your development time vs the cost of getting your hands on a different board.
like, learn to prepare your own USB HID report instead of using the adafruit library
fun, maybe
Heh, could be fun
When is the next FoamyGuy broadcast?
Definitely live
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks.
How's the smoke there?
_will attempt to be wonderful _
Hi Scott. I hope you are well.
Here it’s been a bit rainy. So better. Quite cold Monday.
Well now I'm hungry
Nice!
hello everyone
I made a Spanish tortilla. Which is not a tortilla. It’s an omelette of sorts.
I was all confused.
Live on Twitch 🙂
Hewwo!
Hello all
There is a video of a bobcat kitten at CritterCare. Which defines cute
That's super awesome 😄 I first heard about MircoPython in college, and CircuitPython a bit after, it's awesome seeing it's growth over the time
I sleepy
There's a lot about my college life I wish I could redo, but I was fortunate enough to be loosely aware of micropython and from that circuitpython, and that is something I love from my time back then
I kinda wish I could have skipped college and just worked
Thanks Scott ... now feels like Friday 🙂
the ongoing saga of my 3d printer build is...all done, now to calibrate
cat lick !
Hey we all made it to another Deep Dive !
I'm planning a hardware marathon tomorrow. The solder must flow!
Catto is bath time!
The only thing I miss about college is the people
I copy and paste... @timid plover and Scott do the work ....
College was rough. Did a 5 year degree in 4 years, held multiple jobs at once, so glad it's over and have zero interest in going back -- I learn so much better on my own.
I would not be in a field anywhere related to this if not for college. But not doing college doesn't stop folks from doing awesome things. It was right for me, and wrong for some friends, and not doing college was right for some others
thanks Patrick !
Did you get any signals from the wii balance board?
I didn't get anything, but I just 'poked it' and hoped
research will happen soon
Nerd Squirrel ?
I get nerd snipped all the time, lol
When you see me working on CP during the day ^^^ yep.
Someone told me that, to this day, Windows is still 8.3 internally...
I still don't do file names with spaces, lol
Scott can be a lady AND a gentleman! Or neither!
#ScottDoesScott
(late) Hi from Costa Rica
RIP people who only use heiroglyphs
RIP fede2, unsupported
Lol
I do quite a bit of transliteration and a little bit of translation (when I have enough books next to me)
☮
The circuitpython braille project I did a while ago, also uses these lovely unicode stuff.
I speak English, Cat, and Gallifreyan
I natively spanish, kinda do english, and frequenly read books in portuguese, french, esperanto and bökmal.
But with enough dictionaries, I have translated from nahuatl (and related dialects), about 3 costarican indigenous dialects, egyptian, and quite a bit of sumerian (and 2 related langs)
Plus CP, Cpython ... 😉
If anyone wants to learn, I'll recommend cuneiform writing. It's phonetic, so you can (kinda) write english, spanish and nahuatl with the same alphabet (like we do with latin alphabets)
I wrote on yt chat....
Hej Jonny....Got vaccine #2....got really sick from it :disappointed: Oh well....better that than getting covid though.
yt hates vaccine chat 🙂
If you don't show us what's up your sleeve how will we learn to do the magic tricks ?
Oh yeah, and have also played quite a bit with unicode of the Voynitch. If anyone enjoys rabbit holes, that book is perfect 🙂
@rapid hornet no....I'm not feeling good...really sore arm and feverish...
i felt like that for a few hours. advil and back to bed
@drifting arch I was out for 24 hours, then back to normal.
lol... twitter message length comes to mind ...
Vaccine number 2 was the sickest I've been as an adult. Still better than getting covid though. Hoping dose 3 will not be as bad for me.
Dose number 2 for me comes next week
@rapid hornet also my amazing uncle died on Tuesday from covid. He was vaccinated...but had preexisting.
It was 8 hours after that it came...now I'm about 36 hours.
Hoping for it to be as light as when I actually had covid
😦
My condolences
Big hugs, I'm sorry for your loss
I should stop writing....my english sucks tonight 😄
Oh man, that's horrible @drifting arch . My thought are with you.
I should clarify though, I was fully recovered in about 5-7 days. 100% worth it would / will do it again.
they've actually talked about a mrna flu shot that might be combined. and we get better cell reception (bad jk)
Thanks all....really appreciate the love from the community...
The company also said it has the eventual goal of creating an mRNA-based “combination vaccine” that would protect people against the flu, Covid-19 and other respiratory infections with one shot. - From Moderna
... rewind ... ahh I see what you'r doing ...
Sleeves....arm....are you trying to keep reminding me of the pain 😄
lol
ooh that's deep
okteta is cool. I used to only use "od" which is useful but not as cool
Why in the world do we store those zeros...the great clean with digi-key...
So if you delete the zero's that won't change the way circuit python operates?
Woo! Compression! That's what I love (I'm not great at it but I like playing with it!)
Question--I can write compression and decompression schemes in python--but transfering it to c is tough. Could I play around and ask for help translating it for c? Even if it will fail to save space?
There is only one zero.
There are four lights !
ohhh okay that makes more sense.
That's close enough for me to really enjoy it
Can that region use the same compression that the error messages use?
What's a Q string?
Similar to a Q flag? 🙂
Ahh
remembers that english is not the only language
You mentioned there's debug strings in one of them, are they in the other hexdump?
Unsigned decimal: 2048
Signed decimal: 2048
Hexadecimal: 0x800
Octal: 04000
Human: 2.00 KiB```
Unsigned decimal: 8192
Signed decimal: 8192
Hexadecimal: 0x2000
Octal: 020000
Human: 8.00 KiB```
Meanwhile, I'm doing server upgrades!
the tool bitwise is well worth downloading
the const pool is where you go to swim through your code
could you grab the hex values of that region and plot a histogram of the bytes?
I have no idea if my question would be insightful or distracting
That's why we are here! 🙂
I thought my eyesight was getting even worse due to the fever...turns out it was just YT selecting 480p by default.
padding for misalignment it seems
Would it be cheaper to send everyone a board with more memory than to constantly tweak this every month ?
That strikes me as a part of the huffman encoding thing, is that in the right space for that to be possible
the 'leon' block.
i like 'dansclass' maybe an easter egg 🙂
The huffman encoding has a limit on the string size it compresses right? Does it cut off at circuitpyth
@rapid hornet I've got Hopper for Mac...that's kinda similar to Ghidra...
much easier to use...
@rapid hornet can you send the .bin or .elf? I'll open it in Hopper to see if I can find something.
CircuitPyth was in that
What is compress word offset table's scope--is it just the error strings or does it go further?
Ok, I think if we try something other than huffman we can get space (I could be wrong, the overhead is rough)
Huffman is great, but text has correlation huffman ignores. But that's a good point--it might be right for this use
hover over []
ok...it works in vscode 😄
I'm going to bed...nice to 'see' you all...have a good weekend!
Hej då!
God Natt!
Have a good one! Rest and take care of yourself!
What do you mean by wholesale?
... Doesn't huffman let you store characters as 3 bits if you want, 18 bits if you want, etc?
This is the decode table! Right, I'm in full friday slow brain mode
Is this a fix will go into MP as well ?
I will forever have the itch to try the lzw(and family) algorithms on the qstrings. One day I'll be comfortable enough with the c side to give it a shot
That one was patrick 😄
I don't mind you getting blamed for my questions
haha my thought was I don't deserve the credit for such a good question
smart quotes are evil!
The /py folder is shared between both (I think) that's why I asked...
and I thought I remember Scott and Damian saying it'd be ideal if they were same or as close as possible... but I might not have been paying attention well enough to follow
“Are they?”
I was technical editor on a book. They always snuck into the sample code and made everyone unhappy.
Ha... OK, I get what I did there ...
Time to start the #rust rewrite.
Would word length count be the sum of all words lengths? (It was like half a year ago when I poked around here, I don't trust my initial thoughts)
Is this because you're going from the start to the word end, but you're looping such that the pos is less than the end of the word, so you can never have the full word in that loop?
the at present throws me for a loop though
I mean--this was a huffman encoding right? The nodes should all be leaves
encoded bytes -> [Huffman] -> Values -> [Value Lookup] -> string?
A single character based on a bit flag, or a collection of characters in the table?
Aside question--during the decoding of the strings, are you ever worried that the decoder is going to run out of ram?
That question lets me think about where to save compressed space. It's not that important 😄
Sometimes you just gotta walk away and think about it.
It's a good approach!
Time solves all problems, one way or another
add an apostrophie unit test? 😉
Seems pretty reasonable to me
"Translations with two-byte unicode characters should be compressed"?
so will there be another pre-commit check to look for these ? 🙂
I guess that means an emoji translation is not recommended?
So what's the French apostrophe?
