Getting to where JP is explaining ortho keyboards vs. non-ortho, about how it's not really harder to learn [or maybe re-learn if you know QWERTY], but I'm afraid to switch from QWERTY because I know I'll still need QWERTY for other machines and other people, so I probably would never be as good at 2 types as I am at just QWERTY
Would love to see these in pin/pin configuration: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5152
Nope, no screaming here. Unless a Lars sneaks into my workshop, then well....all is lost.
Lars has no need to sneak. Lars is simply always everywhere.
Can I use Lars to make an Untitled Lars Game?
Worse still, he'll bring Goose with him.
oh dear.
Indeed.
Lol
Is there any reason you could not attach the headers with the pins going under the board? This would keep the square format without having pins hang out.
No reason you can't, just messier with wires crossing each other
This is a panic free zone. ๐
Only place we're allowed to panic is at the disco. Or so I've heard.
Lol
I panic everywhere and always
Why am I now thinking of pancakes?
Because you're hungry and pancakes are delicious

ah ah ah ah stayin' alive. stayin' alive.
@cinder wind The first one is always a dud.
Obviously it became eat-only. Happens if you unplug it without ejecting.
Lol
Thanks @haughty quiver for another excellent workshop! Hope all that makeup came off easily last night ๐
@haughty quiver Great points. Thanks for the show
@haughty quiver Are you interested in an Untitled Lars Game becoming a thing? And can I use your face for it?
Great show @haughty quiver ๐
sure wish my AdaBox would ship...
Good show ๐
๐
Thank you for taking time for us.
Thanks JP!
Thanks @haughty quiver. Very creative costume and makeup for today's show.
Right? Thanks @inner spade it's my "human person of this, your Earth" look.
Very convincing.
It's the eyebrows. You humans mostly all seem to have them.
So that's the secret.
The Man Who Fell To Earth look.

The TVA: โ you must pay for your crimes against the sacred timelineโ
.....what if there were many Lars?
shudders
rejoices
It could be the goodest bad thing to every happen
This is the point at which I abandon this timeline.
Too late for the workshop and maybe this has been pointed out about the ortho keyboard spec. When one thinks about coordinates as x,y, you think horizontal, vertical. But when one thinks about row, column, you thinks vertical, horizontal. The keyboard is row, column (also think about the scan pattern for the pixels)
I'll catch up on the stream - picking up family ๐
remember to stretch before you pick them up, or you might pull a muscle

Deep Dive w/Scott Hi all, this doc is try and track topics and timecodes for my deep dive stream. These notes will end up in the YouTube videoโs description. Any help keeping them groomed as I stream is welcome. Housekeeping Iโm sponsored by Adafruit to work on CircuitPython. Support them, and...
Hiiii!
How's it going all?
It is Friday, work is done, and a long weekend here, so it is good

Random meta question about the stream: How do you feed the sony camera into your computer to get it into the stream? It plugs in with USB and has a driver or something?
today i biked to the gym, did an outdoor workout, biked home. busy
about 95F (35C) here today which is crazy for us. and still no rain which isn't great
@smoky island It's a webcam driver - https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/webcam/en/
This is the support page for Imaging Edge Webcam. You can find information on downloading the software and how to use it on this page.
Hi Scott and everyone from Lisbon
Good afternoon all you wonderful waders, snorkelers, and deep divers! ๐คฟ
I walked about 4 miles, MapMyRun on my iPhone stopped recording part way thru, and my Garmin watch apparently forgot the walk in its entirety... screams into pillow
Just got off a work call, hope y'all are doing well.
Ah, no, Garmin did not forget, watch just being dumb and slow
Commonly referred to as a capture card or video capture device
85 here
Ah that looks neat, but lists support for only Windows / Mac though.
@rapid hornet What was the deciding factor for the magewell vs. the elgato offerings?
I use the webcam driver. Works fine except in MS Teams.
That works too ๐
Firesmoke.ca showing our current level
I smell smoke, but I had BBQ earlier. Ribs, pulled pork, etc.
oooo yes, some pacific nw salmon. i miss that and the crabs from pike place market.
It's been horrible here for smoke as well.
We got smoke here like last week (east coast) from the fires
my friends were in the interior on a bike vacation (BC interior). they returned a few days early as they started encountering ash
oof
Yup! There'll be an ama on friday next week!
not quite Pompeii levels but still
(I was behind on other work and don't have the announcement written yet)
Yeah the interior of BC has been crazy. Most of ours is staying on the MB/ON border but drifting depending on the wind
It'll be a pinned post on the main page of r/python
it's less official capacity, but I'm planning to stream at 11am Eastern on CircuitPython day as well.
If you see a blue police box or a british-sounding Asgardian wearing green while in Pompeii....run.
Just don't cross the streams ~Egon.
Make CP day special! Wear a purple hat.
I made it almost on time!
lol
Thanks to David and Scott who did all the work !
I might be wearing blue, I like to change it up
How hard do you think would it be to get CP to run on a SAML21 as opposed to SAMD21?
thanks!
@fallow fractal Check this out ... I know nothing about it, just searched and it came up
https://github.com/ElectronicCats/circuitpython/pull/14
What gameboy project, if it's not too much of a tangent?
Tock?
So turn a gameboy into an IO for circuitpython?
Scott not in his office :O
Hi Tannewt of the past!
"Deep Tangents" is my nickname for this stream ๐
2019, an era long past...
i work on a python-based GB emulator, if you want to talk more about that. Sounds like a cool project ๐ probably too slow for circuitpython but yeah
BLE Trilaterilation or HAM Radio fox hunt stuff ?
ulab has a lot of the math functions you'll need for those projects
ah, math
As a game boy cart, you have to embed the nintendo logo for copy protection right?
BLE Trilaterilation is on my shortlist of projects for my home system--do you have a recommendation? (ugh typos)
I'm working on a Game Boy type thing, got one of those nice big Sharp memory displays from JP's Pick of the Week
I worked on a project where we did this... someone else brought the formula, but I think they just googled it, read some research and wrote it up.
This is the gameboy gamelink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtHu693wE9o by stacksmashing.

Some streamers just do things and totally ignore the audience, soooo.... you're not that bad
The esp32s2 has something "coming" last I saw about wifi location stuff
Imagine if Adafruit was spelled "Ayyyyedahfroott"
(the longjmp joke was a reply on accident so I deleted it)
kind of interesting https://eloquentarduino.github.io/2019/12/wifi-indoor-positioning-on-arduino/
In this Arduno Machine learning project we're going to use the nearby WiFi access points to locate where we are. For this project to work you will need a Wifi equipped board, such as ESP8266 or ESP32. I published an upgraded version of this project, with all the code and tools you need: check it [โฆ]
'4 easy steps' lol
Unexpectedly in the house !
To a degree I just want to see what I can do with it, if I can manage it. Who know's if I'll be good enough to make it work but it'll be sweet to try
I deleted a sphere
PyOCD does use the JLink software, where as OpenOCD talks to the Jlink directly as far as I know.
For my JLink education edition for instance, it will pop up the daily warning window
But I have been enjoying using PyOCD a lot!
I already have OCD about Python why do I need PyOCD
I am with you just kinda want to see what's possible with beacon tracking and location tracking
i can't find mine. its in abox under a box next to some other box
i have a number of original jlink and some mini ones.
I'm 'adam jones' from yt chat, thanks for the info on these positioning systems, i'm in the research / note taking phase so this is all super useful!
i do the same @limber parrot . i collect links with pinboard and then start working
Feel like saying "roll my own OCD" is almost like saying "roll my own crypto" ๐
not sure what fast means. i used the mini edu jlink to flash nrf feather boards. seemed ok
is this python code talking through the JLink ?
Hooooonk screech someone almost had an accident
Ohhhhh 2 way stops are so bad people always get confused lol
Gotta go fast
People are dumb... All way stops say ALL WAY. People here just don't stop regardless
In code I think they call this โproblem originates between keyboard and chairโ ๐คฃ
honestly, this seems like it is exactly what i was hoping for and looking for! Thanks!
Lol, I prefer PEBCAK, Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard
There we go hahaha I knew there was a better way to say it
"It's hiding"
Iโm fascinated by how many types of debugging and analysis can be done!! Definitely a bit above my depth for now but I know itโs coming heehee
Getting to know my Analog Discovery 2 will get me working with all sorts of low data flows like that -
There's nothing scarier than when you have a memory leak, and you watch usage jump by about 250MB per second.... even 128GB runs out fast in that case!
Aw I want the glasgow so bad. I'll wait, but I'm looking forward to when the shortage is done
After getting an Analog Discovery 2 at the pre-increased price, a friend of mine sold me their old ADv1. So now I have two portable do-everything devices ๐
i vs. {reg}
I went ham and got the extra breakouts and the box of learning chips for $50 as well โบ๏ธ totally gonna work thru the xlinx course and am never gonna take parts out of the kit, itโll be my โbuild a test thingโ kit so I know what to order with some stuff Iโm familiar with โบ๏ธ
My Adafruit order has arrived :D
Your adabox?
That actually came earlier, this is just a regular order
brb!
yeah weird embedded memory bugs are a huge pain
or make a random comment or print and hope the memory error goes away ๐
So much love for rust. I'm really excited to see where it'll be in another couple years.
i think i stayed up til 3 the night before an international flight once looking for a stack corruption bug that turned out to be a space at the end of a max-length string
Rust and fortran are my two languages I want to learn next. But I've said that of fortran for years so who knows if I'll sit myself down and learn any time soon
I get those instagram messages all the time
I got one of those instagram messages. I don't have an account at instagram.
sorry, i'm not paying a ton of attention--is it jumping to an unexpected address or something?
[yay, I'm back. gotta love 6pm phone calls]
USPS: package delivered in/at mailbox
Adafruit box: on front step
I nabbed two sets of most of the breakout boards, adapters, etc. That way I could mirror the setups if I needed it.
And then maaaaaybe a Digital Discovery fell into my shopping cart too during Black Friday
which memory are you trying to ensure is not being corrupted, Stack, Data, BSS, code?
I didn't get the chip kits or the learning courses they had, though it was tempting
Someone trying to hack Scott D:
Nooo
The PPK was supposed to be good enough for me haha but the AD2 was just tooooo good ๐ I wanna circuit bend and do vintage game mod stuff on the side from my main project and needed a scope no matter what, but also really wanna โeat my broccoliโ and get a really solid EE foundation to build on so I can work faster ๐
Halt and catch fire
Yep, and the AD2 (and AD1, which is like 99% the same) are excellent value portable units. Their higher end portable units they released earlier this year are intriguing, if a bit cost prohibitive for beginners.
And I nabbed a PPK back in late May when they restocked, since I missed them during the end-of-year restock.
How do you get the not equal sign? I'm used to using !=
Do you have another device to compare against? (to check bad RAM)
anything is possible, but it is rarely the hardware ๐
do you have a second NRF board?
Hardware problem may not be the most likely solution, but it's the easiest to test!
Fancy font :O
font ligatures, some fonts have them
or there is some other font that replaced it
like double lowercase ff having the horizontal piece connected between them
[spent way too much time implementing OpenType]
i think i use cascadia now
==
thanks for the ligatures comment. couldnt remember what they are called
I personally use Jetbrains' open source Jetbrains Mono font, which includes ligatures: https://www.jetbrains.com/lp/mono/
Don't even get me started about paragraph properties when working on complex script (hebrew, arabic, etc).
You start asking questions like: "Where's the relative-margin-location if it's reading right to left?"
Quite a few, wouldn't know how to write all of them!
i had an argument with someone looking over my shoulder and complaining about the lack of space btw == and === and whatever.
And thanks @simple fractal for the fonts link, I need to update my programming font -- whole "I need a fresh coat of paint on my life" sort of thing.
I think a whole deep dive could be on code editor themes and fonts ...
what are the types for that struct? Maybe a type misalignment?
assuming the struct is static - and not moving - since it is in the link map
what are the variables immediately before and after - ( but it's not getting trashed - in that pyOCD doesn't report a change )
that was unexpected!
I have no idea what to expect because I have no idea what's going on XD
did you have a code review that you wanted to do during the stream ?
is this what you were seeing before?
i too like to suspect the compiler when i make mistakes. I've never been right
here's a dumb question: what's best way to do enums in CircuitPython?
@rapid hornet https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/short-range-guides/b/getting-started/posts/adjustment-of-ram-and-flash-memory << any help?
The scope of this tutorial is to make it clear how a developer can adjust the RAM and FLASH memory start addresses. The examples demonstrated in this tutorial uses SDK 15.2 The first three Sections explains which RAM and FLASH start addresses should ...
I have a TFT bonnet that uses GPIO 4, and the LiPo SHIM... Which also uses GPIO 4. What do I dooooo?
right - need to use the link map ๐
So.........
I was watching you use the Saleae in some older episodes ... you mentioned your own analyzer project have you had time to think about that all recently ?
is that the link ? https://github.com/gamblor21/rp2040-logic-analyzer/
I had the RP2040 going, and @light stump got it hooked to sigrok
I had it output a CSV that I saved via PuTTy that I could load so a bit clunky
@rapid hornet Is this the magewell you have? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1332445-REG/magewell_32040_usb_capture_hdmi_plus.html
awesome, thanks ๐
it's the one I have, but if you don't need HDMI passthrough, audio input/output, or many resolution choices, the $20 HDMI dongle is really close in quality
Hey if you're going to text you have to share your screen with the whole class
Guests :O
I've nabbed one of those dongles via ebay before they were on adafruit's store -- and they're.....well, fine. The Elgato usb capture stick is marginally better. I'm pretty impressed with what Scott is using, looks a lot sharper than the alternatives.
it does seem like a good idea to use the CPU hardware to help debug the problem - we are still trusting the CPU, right?
@rapid hornet is this all before interrupts are enabled? (like no other code can run in spite of the while(true))
so why was the first word reporting the "*" difference ?
@rapid hornet I think the first 8 bytes or something is not 'user memory' but is something internal that the MBR or soft-device uses...
I've never used NRF before this...so I don't know if I'm talking bull ๐
The scope of this tutorial is to make it clear how a developer can adjust the RAM and FLASH memory start addresses. The examples demonstrated in this tutorial uses SDK 15.2 The first three Sections explains which RAM and FLASH start addresses should ...
yeah the $20 one only does 720p I think. And Scott's Mr HD here
you are getting close to your hard stop ๐ฆ
@rapid hornet maybe you can print? Is it low-effort to set up a (maybe software) UART or GPIO line to toggle in specific ways for a scope?
The struggle is real !
thanks, the heat here was getting to me. couldnt concentrate
have a great weekend all ( especially scott )
cya later--i'll watch that GB cart video some time
Thanks Scott!!!!! Have fun with your guests!!
Thanks Scott for another awesome afternoon ๐
Thanks Scott always a good time!
Tangentnewt
thanks all!
Tnx Scott!
Bai!
Thanks Scott! Always illuminating
Thanks for the great stream!
I'll be streaming some work on CircuitPython libraries today. You can hang out with me here in the chat, and watch along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLsuqz-NLD0
What are your plan for today?
Working on some CP7 breaking change updates. First ulab and then looking in the Turtle library
I should hold all my "project" in a central repository and check them from time to time to make them compatible with latest version.
Hello. Audio good on YT. Driving a Pi Pico today.
Sorry, I have to go. Taxying kids is my parenting job...
I think it use fft to detect notes.
It is customary to import numpy as np.
I think you might want to do import ulab.numpy as np.
That paste problem is odd.
I should get a PDM microphone breakout. The Ukulele project looks like so much fun!
Was on the first line.
Just before 'acos'.
Afternoon
it doesn't even know at what speed it's set in the OS
so even shoving it in a corner doesn't actually work
no you can get to the corner, but then you don't know where you are going
Off to Spanish Fork. I'll have another look at the digital filter later. Thanks!
Maybe I can run it on the FunHouse.
Spanish fork Utah?
Is that near Spanish Spoon?
I never heard of Spanish Fork before this, lol
I probably mentioned circup, I use that a lot
Sometimes I think about starting my own town out west and naming it "Philadelphia, PA" but have it in Oregon or something, so it'll be "Philadelphia, PA, OR", lol
Spanish Fork is a city in Utah, south of American Fork
But I wonder now if there are other places have the name Spanish Fork
Why do we have places named with the convention "(nationality) + (utensil)"? XD
Lol
XD
Did you talk to @opal fulcrum before working on those guide?
Try removing the ulab.filter import and see if it runs.
I was wondering in the car if there was some trick like import ulab.numpy as numpy
and then do numpy.x rather than ulab.x
Now we will see if you have a pulse...
The light need to bounce in your flesh, pick the red(?) color of your blood and be sensed.
Close and reopen the graph window.
Spanish Fork, home of the Dons.
is it adafruit_pypixelbuf ?
Have a great weekend everone.
See you soon.
Try 'cluebarometer.py' ported to the FunHouse (and CP 7.0.0):

I can never get here on time for Desk of Lady Ada... so I'll just queue in a not-real question.
Q: Will Lady Ada be the next Doctor? ๐ค๐ฝ
Whoa whoa whoa, I have no plans to regenerate any time soon!
:รพ
That said... Ladyada would be a pretty awesome regeneration.
I keep hoping for a hundred foot tall marshmallow person.
Yeah, something like that!
lol
Have you seen Mythbusters vs Ghostbusters epic rap battles of history?
The stay puff marshmallow man part was hilarious
I have not
will be live in about 15 mins or so...
Aww, you waited for me to get back, that's sweet
I have liked the YouTube already
It tells me I am the first
Desk of Ladyada - Lots of LEDs! https://youtu.be/xByNYONskq0
We finally sent out the IS31FL3741 breakout board with the 351 RGB LEDs - and we were thinking it would be fun to turn them into a set of glasses. We'll show how we had PaintYourDragon do a layout design for us and then how we're routing the 1000+ airwires!

Bleep bloops!
Good evening.
Hewwo!
hey you guys are broadcasting late
hi people from Sturbridge Massachusetts
Super epic unboxing extrordinaire!
Hello all
I got my vaccines but I don't agree with vaccine passports
I got mine too, but I dunno how I feel about them being required
from what I have read you can get a huge viral load even being vaccinated that will infect tons of people you yourself may not be hospitalized because of immune response
same with me. Got my vaccines. But don't know about passports and all that
Yeah, you could become a carrier with the vaccine, even if you don't get sick... virus scary, staying inside
Haha, those look like those bar shades from the 80s
yeah those are funny
Are those two bottom slats empty?
What a nifty idea
That's pretty wild, I love how they line up
what program is ladyada using?
Eagle cad?
EAGLE CAD
cool
I think they said KiCAD is what the rest of the team uses?
limor uses eagle, but some of the team uses kicad and/or eagle or both
I am very happy now that KiCAD has Eagle import.
Is KiCAD free?
Yeah open source
Noice
@open girder do you guys have any adaboxes leftover? If so I'll buy a few subscriptions to give to coworkers. I know it's a subscription and that's ok.
Hey at least those imus are somewhat available. Apparently there are zero BMI150's anywhere and it's been that way for months
@ionic garnet you can sign up now and the next one will be adabox 020, shipping in a few months
for 019, we're out!
yeah I will. I have my own subscription already. Wish I had thought to order more
I saw an ad today for PI kit on walmart for $180.00
Somebody wants macro pads for coworkers? ๐
So far Iโve only gotten the M4 to connect to sigrok, hit a roadblock on the RP2040 with cmake. Also I donโt think my sigrok changes have gotten merged so you still have to compile for yourself. Blehโฆ
yes. I want them to take the edge computing and circuit python as a change agent seriously.
they're always thinking web, web, web and there's more to life than the web (though darned if I know what it is)!
I think the nano 33ble also has that
Now that you mention it
And it retails for $20
the part $ is now more than cost of the device
Bomb cost!
Yeah no kidding
I am going to be lazy and use simulink
I actually have a tool I built for work that depends on that imu in that board
Iโm trying to put a community order together for tqfp samd21 by Friday since they show a October 9th shipping date
On Twitter that is
Gotta order a lot to get a decent price to justify the tariffs and whatnot
That's a higher price than bno085 tbh...
(normally)
Everything is a temperature sensor, just of varying linearity and sensitivity
That one sounds right based on the Arduino servers iirc
The fact that Limor can remember all these part numbers is amazing
limor is hilarious
That too XD
The fact she knows imus (which I kind of know) in addition to everything else she knows (which I don't) is very impressive
Bno085/055 are the same chip different firmware
(basically)
And yeah it's more or less a samd21
I have no clue about chips
Bno070/080/085 is when Bosch went to Hillcrest and said "our sensor fusion is not the best, maybe you can do better?"
Meanwhile, I'm here like "who cares about the mag, I'm never gonna use it anyway because it's too noisy"
๐คฃ
I wish adadruits website would depricate items that are sold out to not show up on search rankings through ajax
Oh those modules are hugely expensive. Like, you can get a module with the bno085 (nominally a $15 part), and the module will be $200
I wish we could backorder
yay! @open girder
@raven hawk after a search, use the UI to change the results
@teal river yah, backorders would be tough to do right now
I want a 4 axis gyro. Tell me angular rates in space-time
can order via Digi-Key for example which allows backorders
(for adafruit stuff usually)
Invensense is pretty blobby
Does Adafruit get as much of my money if I order from DigiKey as if I order direct from Adafruit?
@teal river it works out all the same really, all good ๐
Thanks @open girder and good night. ๐
might just be with/without central ground pad
Bai! good show!
bye bye
Key caps with the little pips on them please! (Maybe printable)
The world is doomed and we're all gonna be sitting around just playing with dirt
i need to buy a new car and the inventory is a little scarce!
Have a good week!
yeah I ain't buyign a car anytime soon
Gosh, it's hitting so hard that the used car places around here that normally have 40+ cars only have like 5
it's a company car so company is leasing
I plan to drive my current car until 2034
Imus are usually picky about how they're soldered, so I'd probably recommend going side by side before sacrificing the ground pad
i don't have a current car. sold it during lockdown
My car is only 13 years old, I'll just keep using it.
What'cha drivin'?
i don't need brand new so i will find things. Want an Acura or Lexis type thing
Nothing wrong with used, just gotta be careful
I'm driving a Lincoln Town Car I bought cheap with low mileage during the 2008 economic crash. I had negotiated mileage for the contract I was working at the time, and that extra $1400/month was a big help.
yup. I'm thinking maybe not even used but leftover 2020 or early 2021 inventory.
Ohhh yeah, that should keep you going for a while if you're not driving a lot and give it the right maintenance :D
Yeah, I like buying fleet duty cars. The previous one I got 500Mm out of, and sold it still running.
Most fleet cars are basically tanks, so even if they've already got high miles, they'll probably just keep running for a long time
They also are generally easy to work on, parts are available and affordable, etc.
Mhmm, all the things that make them good fleet cars also make them good for you cars :D
I've got a 2014 Honda Civic, was new when I got it, and I'm keeping it for a loooong time
i want something like an Acura TLX with Advanced package, SH-AWD and 360+ HP V6 but I'd settle for the 4 cylinder if I must. I can always look at Hondas to get a very similar vehicle. I'd consider used or fleet if they were still excellent. Want the Honda or Toyota lineage (Acura and Toyota) to make the vehicle affordable and reliable. Had amazing luck with Japanese almost-luxury cars
Honda is awesome. Some folks still have Civics and Accords from the 80s that have a couple million miles and are still going strong!
I'll find out the budget and deal parameters next week when I'm at company offsite in California. But yeah, I really want another Honda. 3 of my last 4 cars were Acuras (1 MDX, 2 TLs - one with SH-AWD). Expensive to acquire, but compared to other executive vehicles like BMW, Audi, or Mercedes they are inexpensive to operate and very reliable.
Next week I have to go to my first business offsite since the pandemic. Not ready but it is what it is!
San Francisco here I come!
Woosh!
Open up that golden gate!
sf shrug

I guess I'm not really scared of the virus anymore. We have a few people coming from Europe and 1 from South America. I like SF because I started a great company based there in 1999. I lived in San Jose but spent a lot of time in the city. We'll actually be in the Santa Cruz mountains
most of my family from marin county
direct flight so cuts down on some stress. I'm nervous to fly but as nervous as I expected. Marin is nice.
I shall never fly
No?
Nope
but the housing shortage plus fires
I have no choice. Hong Kong, China, Ukraine, Vietnam, Bolivia... all destinations as soon as possible
I can go anywhere without flying... just not fast
Being CTO of global outsourcing company requires a bit of travel, as did my job at Jibo a few years ago
you can go by boat
Exactly
I don't do well on cruise ships
Never been on a cruise ship, but I'm fine with motion
i never got sick until on a cruise for more than a day
The trick on cruise ships is to stay in the pool. Your brain is fine with motion if you're already floating.
hrm
I want to laugh, but that makes sense
but whale watching or fishing or sailing. Haha about the pool. I'll try it though. Have to cruise at end of the year for my daughter's second take on her wedding. We had a small ceremony here but plan was to get married on a tropical island!
I am SO not ready for THAT
Better than the Ice Hotel, I suppose
The one from that one James Bond movie?
The seasonal one in (I think) Denmark, that's literally made of ice. Only accessible via dog sled or helicopter.
I think that might be the one they used in that movie....
Ah, no, the one they used was in Iceland
I saw a show about the artists invited to build theme rooms. The one from Africa did a beautiful job, but admitted he was pretty much out of his element.
Yeah, Africa isn't known for its tundras, lol
Parts of Wyoming are considered semi-arid tundra lol
Particularly the upper green river basin

RE: working design of new neo pixel glasses.
Consider moving the empty space currently below the five rows of pixels, to the top. This way people will have more room to see out the glasses through the top rather than trying to look through the rows. Sliding the glasses down on your nose make it even easier to see above the pixels. You cannot do this if the open space is on the bottom as with your current design. Best Regards.
You can always use the support@adafruit.com e-mail and they'll send it to where it needs to go. LadyAda doesn't often check Discord so your message isn't likely to be seen here
Maybe adding a drawing @ebon stratus ;-)

I need to unplug this macropad. It keeps typing in boxes i don't mean to type in ๐
I hate leaving HID projects running. Especially if they light up or make noise. I'm so prone to fidget with it that if it's also doing HID things, I end up typing in random bits all the time. ๐
OK that's a really brilliant idea.
Which will now be included in every HID thing I design.
DON'T CARE IF OTHERS DON'T FIDGET. YOU GET FIDGET MODE.
Maybe on the rotary button...?
MacroPad rotary encoder switch sounds like a great fidget mode enable/disable button.
Yes that.
(Was already typing, but you typed faster.)
haha
(Or shorter. Either way.)
like, long press it to enable/disable, otherwise you might click it accidentally too ๐
@teal river coined it: Now known as Figit Mode
Eh, as long as it's not doing other things, I'm less likely to fidget with it. But yes, I agree. If I'm creating a fidget-mode, it should allow for fidgeting with the enable/disable button.
Hehe
A selection of animal noses are available in our gift shop.
Double click maybe.
I was thinking of making the keys require double click because I rotated the MacroPad so the legend on the display is now in groups of 4 in a 2x2 style. Versus the standard 3x4 legend layout.
So you click once, it highlights the matching legend item on the display, and second click sends HID.
(I mean it already highlights it, but that doesn't do you much good if it's the wrong thing.)
I'm really happy with how it looks. Simply trying to make sure it's usable for others.
I have a Keybow 2040 that is running a midi code, which just lights up keys when I fidget since I don't have a midi app running. The day I change it to do some hid macros, I'll have so many accidental inputs...

Lars' regards are omnipresent.
I'm so glad I'm on the east coast and JP is on the west coast, managing the Lars situation. I'm safe.

Good evening everybody!
I probably wonโt make it on show n tell but two exciting boards Iโm showing for CircuitPython Day are these 5x10 RGB matrix boards. One with an RP2040, the other wise an ESP32-S2. I showed the ESP32 one off the other week o. Show and tell

hey everyone! ๐
Question for the end Q&A: with the Qt Py RP2040, you have the bootsel button connected to GPIO for additional functionality and I see that you pass the QSPI_CS signal through a diode. If I wasnโt using bootsel as a user button in Circuitpython would the diode be necessary? I tend to think not but maybe Iโm wrong?

Ah wait it does talk about the receiving/transmitting
Q: about how long do u think the chip over price is gonna last?
I've said it before -- when adafruit loses the top slot for #1 certified open source hardware, we all win.
With everyone else making open source hardware, it raises everyone to better places ๐
[though it's pretty rad seeing Adafruit still in the top slot]
And if anyone is thinking of it, getting your hardware certified is not hard. It took me maybe an hour, two most. If I had to do it again it would be way less
maybe the process could be automated. with circuitpython. ๐

I am LOVING the mistakes and mishaps theme. People always want to be perfect and photoshop their lives, but no one ever learns if they are perfect...
I got some PCBs in today! I didn't measure some footprints right and, uh. some holes were very wrong.
Learning means making mistakes.
My mistake this week is realizing A. I didnโt have the GND pins on the SPI flash fully connected and the SD1/SD2 pins mixed up ๐
I've failed far, far more times than i've succeeded.

What do you mean by CP library?
So I can plug one into a Pi and use it outside of Labview.
Thanks @open girder!
A big inspiration for me
Thanks all!
Ah, I missed the first part of it
thanks all! g'night
I have ditched labview in favor of CP, cause it's so much easier, and the future me doesn't need to learn labview, but can read simple Circuitpython code.
You wanted CircuitPython for the 3231, right?
https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_DS3231
Nope, sorry, already using that (3231) project on my printer. The Diligent USB O-scope. Would love a CP library to use with it.
it runs linux and can probably handle running a python interpreter, so you could use blinka with it most likely, as long as a board definition got cooked up maybe?
I don't expect that will ever have CP dedicated to it. It's not going to be widespread. However, as @desert orbit mentions, you can probably finangle blinka onto it. And there might be someone out there that'll work the other way for connecting it to a pi and interpreting it with regular Python.
i use the mcp2221a all the time on my linux laptops with blinka. ๐ โค๏ธ
yeah i guess it'd depend what devices it presents to a USB host, if you're thinking about operating it via python/circuitpython using a usb-attached scenario
The Compact RIO rigs are the cheap ones, and are expensive. At $895 for it, seems like a cheap alternative for less critical stuff.
any device that has host drivers with VISA support are pretty easy to work with in normal python via PyVISA or VXI, actually
so not really circuitpython but it'd be python ๐
I do a lot of it, regularly, with VISA and USB devices.. But, NI stuff is notoriously difficult to work with (for me, at least). Yes, Python is fine.
yeah, i learned that lesson a few weeks back during my first adventures trying to control some GPIB instruments (80's HP 3478A dmm and 70's HP 59303A HP-IB DAC) with a cheap NI GPIB-USB-HS from eBay...
spent many hours clicking around in LabView (which is neat? and i can see the appeal? but holy crap building a virtual instrument driver is a zillion clicks!) before I gave up and went right into Python ๐
YUP, exactly. I played with the Crayons and gave up.
so yea, in a host scenario normal python with PyVISA would probably be your best bet assuming it uses visa.
but it'd be so much more fun to run python on the device and see what kind of cool stuff can be done with direct access to those delicious DACs/ADCs. ๐
Python is king. But, labview and NI have their places (HUGE volumes of data, like planes, plane engines, etc...) But, in a small factory, it's much easier to implement things from the Adafruit library. If it breaks, just replace it.
@nova totem @robust horizon @clear matrix : before I forget completely, here is a link for the code I used to run the kitchen clock : https://github.com/flavio-fernandes/kitchen_clock It also shows more info on the brackets I printed for it. Go circuit python!!!

no flicker, just a tiny bit of shake
RP2040 has 23 GPIO pins, so I think the biggest key matrix it could do would be 121 keys (11x11 matrix, so need 11 + 11 == 22 GPIO pins) and you'd still have one GPIO left over for all the neopixels per key
No flicker at this end.
those custom keycaps totally look awesome too

.....didn't see him until just now. Good eye Andy

Lars Cutter
I think you may need to jumper the neopixel back to the top
+1 silicone wire -- that's some really nice stuff. Not good for breadboarding, but excellent for routing inside project enclosures -- super flexible.
It's flicker-free here.
JP, seems like camera vibration on the stream I see (caused by HVAC?) that maybe shows up as flicker on your display?
The stream itself on twitch is a bit laggy & stalls a bit for me -- but that could easily be on my end
It stalled for me just now.
the stream on twitch stalled for me also.
Is everyone's audio Ok?
yes
yep
My computer is unwell. Audio is very flaky.
if you enjoy watching soldering watch bigclive, many of his videos solder and unsolder things. occasionally unsuitable for yonger viewers though
i researched some Ultrasonic soldering today
Lol. Occasionally.
@lavish patrol am I underestimating?
@robust horizon Just a tad. ๐
rarely suitable for younger viewers though..
Social Security scammer called me -- I gave them the name of "Lars Marconi". Insta-hung up on me. Their loss!
Thanks @haughty quiver ๐
Thanks @haughty quiver . Nice collection of tricks/tips today.
@haughty quiver Thanks that clears up things about the board.
Thanks @haughty quiver
He does like his num nums.
@haughty quiver Is there a limit to the number of keys you can control with a RP2040?
When it comes to building layouts, you could create a layout from http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/ and then create an svg or dxf with http://builder.swillkb.com/ and then bring that into your modeling program to create the rest of the enclosure.
here's one very similar to John's layout
@viral sail as mentioned earlier, somewhat over 100
i just missed the stream, didn't i
Thanks. Sorry if I missed it earlier. My connection was glitching out partway through the program.
@viral sail no worries!
I want to document this but have no idea where it would make sense to put. I will remember you said that and ask you again when it comes up in the future and I've forgotten the actual numbers.
haha no problem. yeah it's exactly not intuitive. is there general learn guide about keyboards in CircuitPython or maybe in the docs about keypad?
Not really. The issue is that the info is RP2040-specific.
Which is why I'm not sure where it would fit.
Anyway, thanks for doing the math!
Dinner time here. ๐
ahh I see. I thought you meant about matrix keebs in general
I see how it could be generalised. Hmm. Could go in the NeoKey Ortho Snap guide.
yeah maybe with a small list of "maximum number of keys for common boards"
Hey @haughty quiver I've been having trouble with the Macropad (AdaBox CP version) when I use your MIDI code... after a while (5 minutes?) it stops sending events. Is this a known issue?
Sorry! I thought you're stream was over... this can wait ๐
Unless you want to do the math on other boards, I think I'll stick with "For example, on the RP2040, you can have...." ๐
@pearl shoal not an issue Iโve seen. Iโll test it later and see which CircuitPython version Iโm running in case that is an issue
@haughty quiver if you run your code and have this site open https://www.onlinemusictools.com/webmiditest/
Then rotate the wheel and you'll see the messages
Let it reset a few minutes and it will stop seeing the messages
@pearl shoal i tried that test and it worked fine on that website after five minutes of rest.
Hmm... I'm writing up an issue now per Dan... I'll send you a link
would you try it with a midi monitor program to help rule out possible browser web midi stuff?
I started with the OBS-MIDI plugin, so I don't think it's web-usb - it had the same issue
But I'll test with anything you recommend
oh hang on, I didn't realize you were talking about the Ableton code. I just tested the more basic Macropad MIDI code.
if you want, test it with this https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-macropad-rp2040/macropad-midi and I'll test the Ableton code
TBH -- the Ableton code is likely overkill for doing OBS switching so you may want to look at that simpler example code. Ableton has a two-way street with the controller, so the Macropad is both sending and receiving MIDI messages in that code.
Ok, I can try with a simpler midi sender - any pointers would be helpful. I just installed MidiView and will let you know if that breaks too
Just stopped
Serial port sttill works
Still sending debug output
I wonder if this is Windows 10 related then if both examples break. I've tested on Mac, iOS and MIDI host synth devices, but not Windows or Linux.
If you could test it on Windows 10 I'd appreciate it - Dan says there are some USB drops he's seen on the RP2040? Perhaps MIDI doesn't recover like Serial/MSD?
Will do. I just tested the Ableton code on that Web MIDI page and it continued working fine after 5 minute rest.
Identical results w/MidiView
