@clever summit Your TARDIS needs servicing...
Goat Simulator anyone?
๐
@lavish patrol Actually had to reinstall the firmware on my firewall. Kinda hard internetting without a firewall. ๐
ah, Steve.
Understood ๐
So just to never ever miss a JP stream again I now have TWO firewalls hooked up.
Squwortle!
instant halloween soundboard
Lol
Why would you ever want to revert from a DOOM playing machine?
Better!
Bucket list, @haughty quiver?
I'm gonna change my name to Manuel Focus so I can hear my name on all these youtube videos
quickie show today!
Thanks @haughty quiver!
Thanks for another awesome workshop!
Thanks. ๐
Oooh! Top seekrit!!! ๐คซ
bonus eyebrow!
Thanks JP, and have a wonderful rest of your day everyone

dense does describe things (or me at least)
Lol.
Anyone tried the SparkFun Qwiic MultiStar?

@grand tusk I haven't tried it, but it looks really cool
Partly because I'm "saw every Sho Kosugi movie in the theater" years old.
(sadly, it's an April 1st hoax)
Thank you everyone doe your thoughts and prayers! The lovely doctors have decided I can finish these drug protocols AT HOME! So thatโs where I am! Iโll document the full experience but not today ๐ just happy I am home! https://www.facebook.com/bill.binko/videos/3888049034571458/?d=n

An hour? Who knows how long that might be!
I believed you at "Costco".
๐
Oh no windows update!
Hopefully itโs done soon
21%
How is this taking so long. I have an SSD
Wake up in the morning "23%"
Windows update has horrible timing
Update the wife's mac mini a few days ago. "Less than a minute remaining" was well over 1 hour
But who's counting?
Obviously not us amirite
22%
23%
24%
8 minutes to make up the other 76% to stream on time
25% 1/4 of the way there!
Watch it reboot at 28%, comes back at 94%
30% after getting to 29% and rebooting LOL
48%!
Slowly
Another reboot
60%
Wait it went backwards to 57%?!?
This is a.. a wild ride for sure
Big graphics card Rev up
85%
90%
Weโre gonna make it I think!
Unless the last 10% takes an hour LOL
Done!
Okay, jump on over to https://twitch.tv/oakdevtech and Iโll be live in just a few minutes
Oak Dev Tech or ODT is an electronics manufacturing and development company that specializes in tiny form factor boards. We stream board development, testing, and assembly.
i'm live ๐
Not getting audio, and not sure it isn't me this time!
Windows update messed with your mute!
Volume is just a smidge low
Much better! ๐
Pypi? or Pipy?
I always read it in my head as "Pie Pie"
Polling for touch, either 8ms or 16ms probably won't make a world of difference! How quick can someone touch something anyway!
Hmm, I guess like those stacking or Rubik's cube timers where you want to know ASAP when someone touched or let go
I guess some sort of debouncing, without the bounce
Do you do your Arduino driver code in Arduino, or elsewhere?
Slightest touch versus "mashing" it?
STandalone mode? Sounds like it could be fun for kids to start "playing" with
Working on getting a bit more fluent and useful with VIm. I'm a keyboard shortcut/CLI fan, so makes sense, but some habits break hard!
Yeah, I've been in Visual Studio since before there was a Visual Studio, which was initially released as a "bundle" back in '98
or maybe '97. I forget
Not to backseat code-review, but setAllKeyAve() doesn't have a parameter name for uint8_t
I thought it might have been with the "newer" C, but from style of the rest of the file...
But yeah, this is a .h file, isnt it
I can see value in both. I learned in the pre-millenia C/C++, so it's been a minute
I also worked with people who were stuck in the mid 2000s for C++, rather than moving onto C++11 or others
Defense industry? oh yeah! I knew someone who, ~10 years ago, was at Lockheed. They were still having to support codebase written in .Net 1.0. This was after 2.0, 3.5 and 4.0 which were all quite evolutionary had come out
Heck, even 1.1 was leaps and bounds beyond 1.0!
and that came out just a year later
On the flip side, some of the documentation that comes out can be really helpful, like coding standards in C published by NASA
Not a fan of switch()?
I guess I'm always looking for "shortcuts" or efficiencies, prematurely even at times. Like that I would have done in arithmetic because it would seem faster/cleverer
something like reg += 0x26 since they're all incrementing as 1. At least at a glance. But it can be more error prone to invalid inputs
right
That's quite reasonable
The balance of "make it work" vs. "make it learnable"?
Oh wow, I didn't realize you didnt' need to compile your library for Arduino. Makes sense though, in hindsight. But that's nice
Now all that the IDE needs is autocomplete
Need to add the custom board repos?
This? https://adafruit.github.io/arduino-board-index/package_adafruit_index.json
Had to do it recently, so had it on hand lol
Crazy as ever. WE had 80 yesterday, 60 today
Tomorrow? Typhon, tornado or blizzard
Yep, "all of the above" is on the bingo card
But in Utah, weather must be a bit more unpredictable from the mountains
40-50s, I'd take it
Don't you need to initialize it? Like "new ..." ?
like in setup touch = ODT42QT1070();?
So now setAveOnKey() should work
Bet it changed the COM port on you
*cough*;*cough*
You don't want to know how many times I add a ; in Python without the right prefix.... #
I think delay() is MS
time.sleep() is seconds
Which song?
I missed a minute
Never heard it, and only heard, as far as I know, their cover of "Sound of Silence"
There's a duet out there that does really gentle covers of all sorts of songs, "Renee and Jeremy"
Listened to them a lot when my kids were young
I try to. I usually play my stuff I like, or will turn on the local AAA station
Whatever that was, it did something to your USB for a second
Might have "lost" CIRCUITPY after flashing with Arduino
Yep, we'll have the windows open tonight for the cooler temp
The lake, like the cake, is a lie?
PASS!
I haven't, no
No, haven't played either
Not much of a gamer
It sure is taking a while to get to the drive :/
Mu said it spotted a new Adafruit device for a moment
I think OBS got confubled again
and now it's back
Might want to try 7-Zip. I thikn it's more efficient with compression than the Windows Explorer built-in
I'm not saying WinZip jumped the shark, but when I saw that they were a) acquired by Norton, and b) made "WinZip for Mac", well, I took a moment for reflection
Oh, "Mu" won't be in the usual "Program Files" directories, since you did the "Just for me" install
Maybe Arduino needed a day off
So next time, it'll work
G'night!
thanks for joining as always ๐
over time things will get more serious as more people realize i'm streaming and doing fun stuffs lol
Sure thing! Always nice hanging out

hey
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks
Good afternoon
Hola from 'rado! :-D
Video is 0.1 fps on Youtube.
Hi Scott.
Yes, it's "next slide please" levels of choppy haha
So, weblate GANG all here?
lol, Soon
Weblate GANG now covers four languages.
how's it going all?
what is the other one?
I took control of the english translation. ๐คช
@modern night Hello
So now cover 4, but only manage 2? ๐
Yep.
back on twitch, still not good ๐
Streaming audio over FM, video over webcam taking JPG stills and uploading as fast as possible
Like in the good ol' days
I'm seeing about a screen update every 5-10 seconds
this is how we learn new things - when adapting to problems
Time is very quantized. since yesterday. Planck is playing a great April Fool's joke.
Today's deep dive is all about debugging streaming issues - AKA "let's see if we can distract from people asking about Bluetooth!"
Today I'll answer questions and discuss the work to get a BLE workflow going in CircuitPython. Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com------...
it's choppy on YT too ๐ฆ
Have you tried running Windows Update?
is this his new computer?
Did you try rebooting?
(yes, I kjnow you're on Arch Linux)
๐
I'm fairly certain it's even less fun for you Scott
take your time scott !
So we are NOT having fun?
Smooooth
scott is def not having fun. >.<
Smooth!
a new kind o deep dive ๐
well, smooooooth-ER
Frames are good now!
Fuzzy

Hi all ๐
just joining in...
oh, nvm. YT decided I wanted 144
cool!
๐ฅณ Major props to THE009
He does look a little fuzzy at 144p. ๐
YT allowed me set the size up to 1080p and is still running smooth
are you double dipping hugo?
smooth for me as well
unfocused now
Not double dipping, giving due credit
LOL
better!
Sounds like Youtube downgraded everyone to 144p
yep
Not sure that the "p" makes much difference at 144!
what do you want the timecode to be?
we are the uncounted ones ๐ฎ
Oh, we are doing BLE today!
If you're watching, you're counted @ancient grotto
Hi there @smoky island !
Hi from CR.
@gusty wedge hi
So @gusty wedge, CR is what?
Hi @gusty wedge. Hope the Costa Rican autumn is treating you well so far
Costa Rica
Oh, Costa Rica! Nice!
Local wildlife staring me down on the bike path.
Lovely afternoon, just came from a short walk on a park to pick up tree seeds.
Sounds wonderful! ๐
Am I late?
nope
Just in time
๐ฐ๏ธ
q: just started my first BLE project that i showed on S&T. i'm confused what the BLE components i need to setup some kind of "clear/reset connections and repair from scratch" button to make my board useable across devices without having to manually disconnect before reconnecting
Thanks for pointing out the jargon and fixing it!```
Current project tonight -- making a "mouse jiggler" for the Apple TV, so it doesn't think I'm not there after 90-120 minutes.
Whohoo! My first pull request!
@clever summit nice congrats!
for @timid plover and timecoding
Thanks!
I just had a interview for a Sr embedded dev position and it seemed to go really well.
No congrats in youtube?
I don't like to double-dip ๐
That's awesome! Positive vibes for you!
*repair read as re-pair
right now when i plug in the battery, it auto connects to my laptop, unless i first disconnect from the laptop. i'd like to have a button that just forgets connected devices and goes into pairing mode
ooh okay. "bonding" that's the term. that helps!
yeah, thermocouple seems the right sensor for this. Maybe an infrared camera if there is enough distance for the pixels to make sense, or one of the one pixel IR thermal sensors
with thermocouples - do check out cold-junction / reference-junction temperatures
does the car's OBD II port give you that information?
also look at RTD - using resistance for more precision if needed
'89 - certainly no OBD][
I really miss ODB.
OBD2 became standard in North America on 1996 model year vehicles.
BMW had OBD1 from 1982.
@clever summit but i don't think it shares any info about coolant temp
my bluetooth computer dongle gets interference with USB3. you can't plug it into the usb3 port OR be near a usb3 port that has something plugged into it
May be true, @pastel lance . Never looked into anything but OBD2.
Ok, you have to explain the current and always limitation on BLE on: (1) nrf52xxx (2) AirLift (3) BLE on Blinka (WIN/Mac/Linux).
๐ Thanks Scott
@clever summit is it possible for you to tell me a little bit about how i would get that info from the obd2 port
I just downloaded an app for my phone and hooked up a BLE OBD2 adapter.
I have a nikon coolpix p1000 that has BLE, so a circuitpython remote control for it would be cool.
I even have the sniffer somewhere.
Would you recommend your key finding thing? Or best is to take a itsybitsy nrf52, a LiPo and reinvent the wheel?
But this was some years ago, so I don't know what is current. I would suspect the apps is way better now.
@clever summit i want a microcontroller with some can bus ic and show it on a seven segment display
I thought BLE used same frequencies as Zigbee - so similar ranges
You should bring a learn guide page... that show the mode.
@pastel lance Shouldn't be too difficult once you know the id of the temperature.
yup that's what am trying to know
Happy Easter everyone!!
Thats a list of all the P codes, some are generic (meaning all vehicles use the same ones) and others are specific to the mfgr / vehicle
oops replied wrongly ๐
If I recall correctly; You setup a filter in the CAN chip to listen to certain codes.
"Look at that cute kitty"
- Scott, while cat-cam's off ๐ฟ
"Bluetooth workflow", interesting idea!
Sparkfun have an intro to OBD2 and can bus
https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/getting-started-with-obd-ii/all
I know you can SEND data with the Micro:bit BLE, but can you program it from mobile through BLE??
did you consider a web-app
Serial/UART over BLE is not "super standard" as opposed to Serial on Bluetooth. There is a circuit python LIB that does the Nordic way. But you cannot change the UUID for another copy of serial.
Oh, OK.
also add a unique id to the name
for devices that allow multiple devices to connect (like a mouse that toggles between machines) do you need a separate BLE chip for each device?
@gusty wedge That would be cool
Is this workflow tied to BLE or is it standard for regular (older) bluetooth as well?
In CircuitPython, I believe I was successfull in connecting to two separates computer, simultaniously, pretending to be a mouse.
That was tricky...
You re-advertise after the first computer is connected.
oh interesting. i'll go dig around the docs
I was sending the same mouse move to both computer.
I could not really control separatly.
Hey Scott, do have any idea as to how audio streaming over BT (regular BT, I don't think there's such a thing for BLE) works? What would it take to write code for a Nordic chip to act as a wireless BT speaker?
Take the learn guide for BLE.
back
Yes
you're back
Yep
No you'r enot back, you're Scott
you're back guess it wasn't just me
We peeps
I wanted to do a keyboard HID emulation with a Adafruit Circuit Python board to two Raspi 4s, but I haven't gotten to it yet..
Works well unless all the manufactures hardcode it to 1234 or 0000 to make it easier to connect ๐
I prefer 0000
there was a microcontroller that used flashing an led and your phone camera to pass pairing info
i am fan of the 9999
Neat idea!
@simple fractal Oh, that is basically the last thing I would try!
The reset button ???
nfc is another system for pairing. but once paired then you have to increase security
at least thats my vague understanding
I think there was a Timex \ Microsoft Mail thing way back that did that to sync your calendar.
Timex Datalink ...
ah, timex
An intro that is older but probably not too far off from what is current. And its a 'Deep Dive...'
https://medium.com/rtone-iot-security/deep-dive-into-bluetooth-le-security-d2301d640bfc
I had that for a LOOONG time. Didn't work so great :/
Oh, there was the weblate GANG fix!
i noticed a 7.0.0 tag has appeared in the CPY repo. wonder what that will bring ๐
So it is not going to be in the "kernel" but in "library"? Or it is a mockup in "userland"?
Break stuff !
import ble_workflow
Shocked that there's not ADAF for Adafruit Vendor IDs
32bit? :p you think people are going to have fewer than 2 billionble devices in the near future?
๐ to uGFX
โ@rapid hornet Creator IDs, how are you allocating them? So 0x1234_xxxx could be registered by one person/organisation?
@full briar What was the microcontroller??
can't remember or find it now! it was 6 or so years ago, they offered a complete stack with cloud based ota etc to simplify iot development
The BLE SIG is in Kirkland, WA if you want to chat with them. I might have some contacts.
There is/was that file transfert solution over the REPL for micropython. Can you reuse that?
@rapid hornet PR1 submitted ๐
lol...
@full briar OK. Thanks!!
xmodem ๐
Do you envision the BLE file transfer protocol requiring the storage to be mounted writeable from boot.py on the CircuitPython device?
This might be old information... but at one point iOS didn't suport serial over bluetooth. (Ham radio control apps used this). Has that changed ?
ampy <== That was the recommendation for micropython...
What is BLE range on CPB/Micro:bit (estimate)
It is old information...
I think that's changed @left pier
It was a mobilink TNC and their TNC3 says "Bluetooth 4.2 support (dual-mode EDR/LE) iOS Compatible"
OK, thanks.
There was a video of Ladyada and Mr. Ladyada testing BLE out in a park over 50 feet (~18 meters) without issues
Are there Adafruit rules on what BLE library are not acceptable in the community bundle... let's say a library to control vibrating device? ๐
It was nagging at my mind, so I went and found the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtJJ8msPKLY
And that was with the CPB (Circuit Playground Bluefruit)
Wonderful to see all the unmasked faces ๐ in @autumn turret 's video
Thanks @autumn turret
You're welcome!
@rapid hornet Best IDs ever ๐
In "Bluefruit Connect" you have packet based protocol, over serial with function like picking a color or sending image... you could expand that.
@rapid hornet I'm encouraging your project by having a few registered IDs.
Is the bug that it's starting to corrupt the file system, but not finishing the job? Or that it's corrupting the filesystem at all? Asking for someone who is pedantic about the English language! ๐
Ha, It really isn't necessary to abide people who are so pendantic.
Maybe that "Bluefruit Connect" and protocol and serial was there for old way to connect serial co-pro to old stuff, before nRF52 support.
I thought you were on Linux! Are you on a Raspberry Pi 400 @rapid hornet ?
i think my intel laptop builds in about 90 seconds.
I know! I don't have a Raspi 400, so I wondered if they were faster than a Raspberry Pi 4's turtle speed.
which is disappointing if a rpi4 does it in 2 minutes. ๐ฆ
Blinka "server side" thing, to control a PiZero? Is that posible or we hit a limitation of BLE on the Blinka side?
https://www.amazon.com/Make-Bluetooth-Projects-Raspberry-Smartphones/dp/1457187094 for Sander Vesik's question.
To have the BLE workflow for a Pi.
You never left for me
There was a glich. ๐
global DNS was a mess yesterday
No matter how the internet feels about you, we still love you Scott!
You're back (baby back baby back baby back)
Like in matrix when the same cat is seen twice...
Any news about the "convergence" with BLE on micropython?
so what are your future steps ( in next weeks ? )
Both MP and CP were developing separatly at the same time.
Low level, so blinka can build on top... to make it CP like.
Smart..
easy for user. means a lot of work for the developer :p
thanks for thinking of us users ๐

Is OHS on YouTube??
You have to get a ticket it seems...
sounds like you started practicing on us already ๐
Record your OBS stream .... ๐
Soooo at 15 minutes is it a shallow dive ?
OK, cool. I will definitely be there on Friday next week for Deep Dive's Birthday! ๐
"tickets will grant access to interactive portions of the event including meet-and-greets and sponsor booths" => So maybe the streaming will be available for free. It's only 20$
So walking in a puddle wearing flipflops?
I'll make a virtual cake ๐
Thank you for the stream.
Thanks Scott, knowing nothing about BLE i feel I have learnt a bit today. Always a good thing
will you do a separate livestream for your preseantion?
Thanks Scott !
Thanks Scott! Great job.

Or you can make the long version... more than 15 minutes. ๐
Thanks for another informative deep dive Scott, and for another wonderful Friday afternoon friends!
thanks scott - have a great weekend!
thank you for a great stream! I'm going to be rewatching this one a few times! Have a great weekend!
Happy Easter!
thanks all!
Thanks! ๐
Was there a discount code today?
nope, they are only on one product during JP's show on tuesday usually
@timid plover youtube has a 5000 character limit for the description so I'll need to trim it down a bit
oops - I see 6,055 - sorry - maybe some questions can be dropped -
I wonder if google docs can display character count - to check midstream ๐
5,183 by just trimming some of the start and last timecode ๐
In Google Docs: Tools Word Count also has a characters count
I think the housekeeping was about 3 minutes or so - times might work out after trimming
then of course - does youtube stick in carriage returns with every line ๐ฆ
Today I'll answer questions and discuss the work to get a BLE workflow going in CircuitPython.
Iโm sponsored by Adafruit to work on CircuitPython. Support them, and by extension me, by purchasing hardware from https://adafruit.com Chat with me and lot of others on the Adafruit Discord at https://adafru.it/discord.
Deep Dive happens every week....
(unlisted until I adjust the times)
thank you!
I think the hello starts at 1:07
1:07 or 1:08 give or take seems to be right
I think it's later actually
is waiting for the first question
7:14 is when I read the first q
I think it's 34 seconds
needs to clap
was away - looking at the nRF52840 - looks like the chip could support a LOT of different protocols - probably where I got the idea that BLE and Zigbee were using same radio as 802.15.4 physical layer
The nRF52840 is fully multiprotocol capable with full protocol concurrency. It has protocol support for Bluetooth 5, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee, 802.15.4, ANT and 2.4 GHz proprietary stacks.
obviously I have more to learn here ๐ -
Nice chart in
Oh - the PDF also notes the IPv6 over BLE as mentioned in the chat today
can folks see the video on https://www.youtube.com/c/adafruit/videos
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels. ?
no i can't
I don't, most recent video I see is about solder
same here - solder is latest
Any chance you'll be working on Thread? (also supported by the chip on the Clue)
k, must be a cache issue
@upbeat matrix unlikely, it's way more specialized than ble
oop it's gone. i'll bet it's caching between a couple of servers*
I noticed that the ipod mini speaker does thread but I'm not sure how. Maybe they just talk to each other. At first I was hoping that Apple would be releasing other thread stuff but maybe not.
see it there now
today @rapid hornet discussed BLE - timely BLE article that I heard about on the hackaday podcast - they mentioned this article:
https://hackaday.com/2021/03/23/a-crash-course-on-sniffing-bluetooth-low-energy/#more-467676
might be similar to the tools from adafruit
I'll be streaming some more work on CircuitPython libraries and Tiled map games this morning. Join me here in the chat, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I44qkbeUPqg or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Good Morning
Good afternoon Gentlemen.
@clever summit Hello
Hey @ancient grotto How do you translate "Nordic system firmware failure assertion."????
I have only been in the software business for 30 years, and I cannot for the life of me explain that in swedish...
lol let me think
"How's it going".... Yeah, trying to setup a IPSEC tunnel. That is how it is going. ๐
Please speak louder, my robot vacuum is cleaning the office right now... Hahahaha!
"Falla en la declaracion del firmware del dispositivo Nordic"
I wonder if we just don't have a word for assertion in swedish. ๐
I remember the windings have some electrical symbols
how's it going? I'm just hopping in, a bit late today
Validate?
More like "assumed precondition"?
that does look great
According to this I guess we have new words to translate, Ill come back in a min
"Felaktigt fรถrhandstillstรฅnd i Nordic systemfirmware"
@ancient grotto Yep, but it was just my pull request.
Oh, ok I have just translate right this minute
Gotta run, have a good day!
Yes, even the PNG works like that when we add gif or png to the docs
Wohoo. Swedish translation at 100%. So where is @autumn turret when we need him? ๐
Not sure,
yes we are imssing that in a lot of libraries
No same beta 4
You are welcome ๐
is the update tied to the security releases for python 3.8/3.9?
@smoky island Error is
examples/bitmap_font_label_forkawesome.py:14:0: C0411: third party import "from forkawesome_icons import microchip, python, terminal" should be placed before "from adafruit_bitmap_font import bitmap_font" (wrong-import-order)
maybe is using different .pylintrc file in the directories?
pylint 2.7.4 fixes "disabled warning not ignored (#4268)" so maybe you're seeing the outcome of a bug they just patched?
very
I'm good, thanks. Got your message on the PR. Good point, forgot those two items. Will clear those up later
Woho, the weblate GANG is here! hi @autumn turret
@autumn turret French translations are waiting for you...
Again? I did some just this morning!??!?!
Sorry folks, I see French at 100%
And it was even there BEFORE Swedish and Espaรฑol!
Just sayin' ๐
Very cool that folks got to see the progress bar. And glad it worked as expected for the values your threw at it. ๐
Hahahaha! Lalalalalala.
Actually, @ancient grotto already did the translations, but then I made a pull request to change the english texts...

Thanks Hugo progress bar shows 100%
(be back shortly, going to lurk while I make some bread)
That caught me too
Keeping an eye on Humble Bundle is worthwhile too, since they often have a bunch of game assets that come up from time to time
what you don't want to build this up so it can run a universe scale particle simulation?
Good afternoon @wind spoke. Hope you're doing well
Hello @wind spoke
It's home vacation for me... not doing much I am affraid.
Ah, good old "Staycation"
Camera would try to centre on the player except when he is too close to the edge...
And then the Japaness version of the game invert the meaning of X and O and we are lost for ever. Was that on the NES or on PlayStation?
when it returns the entities, should it also return them in their drawn order? so if you're having cursor issues being drawn below objects, you can use it as a sanity check?
oh ok--I was thinking a list with all from background to cursor, nevermind then
@autumn turret
Finally got the stupid IPSEC tunnel up and running.
Is Alt-GR pressed? @smoky island
To the right of space
it might be called Meta in Linux
It's notorious for messing with the keyboard
Btw; Sounds id better today, keyboard sounds not as much desk resonance.
No. That's Alt-Enter I think
That is Alt-Gr... or "meta"
"The Meta key is not found on modern keyboards. Its use is sometimes emulated with AltGr (on some international layouts) or the right Alt key on the others"
Copied from askubuntu.com
For years I was believing Gr was for green, because it was green on my first keyboard.
Yes, for@ and # and โฌ ...
Even for | on my French or Belgian or French AZERTY keyboard
That was confusing...
At work we support 20+ languages... and many keyboard (even if we try to standardise or force people toward French / English and German).
Some keys have 5 differents special caracter, in various colour. So a Swedish will pick "purple" and know where those strange keys are.
Greek get their own keyboard... because of Greek.
Bulgarian get their too I guess because of Cyrilic.
We don't have any strange keys. We have keys with the perfectly natural characters ร ,ร and ร.
๐
Don't even try to type on someone else keyboard... it is just a waste of time.
รฉรจรชรซiรฏรถ you name it... French is cool too.
On Mac there is an extra key for ยง and ยฐ
At university, TTY terminal were QUERTY without arrow keys... so VI using hjkl and the key where hard. The PC 80186 were Azerty with "soft key". So for me, if the keyboard is "HARD" it must be QUERTY and if it is soft it is AZERTY. I was switching very frequently and I can type on both after a few mistake.
I switch between Mac and Windows all the time. Ctrl-C vs Cmd-C.... Brain is getting better and better on task switching.
And then I use Linux sometimes. Ctrl-Shift-C....
The CTLR vs ALT and the CMD thing on Mac is killing me...
Took me a year to stop being annoyed. ๐
Mu is a mess too, with Ctrl+C in the window above and Ctrl+Shift+C on the REPL...
I've gotta head out, thanks for the awesome stream and have a good one all!
Bye @modern night
Awesome, see you then!
Thanks @smoky island
Thanks @smoky island . Have a great weekend everybody.
Thanks to you @smoky island . I love games. Pico8 fanboy here.
Same to you @manic vessel
CU thursday then!
Desk of Ladyada - I2C keyboards, encoders and potentiometers... oh my! https://youtu.be/fsptFdDn3UI
We're on a bit of a tear, playing with mechanical interface elements like mechanical keyswitches and now rotary encoders. This week we finished our 4-key I2C breakout, we had a yucky edge-case condition in our firmware where an GPIO IRQ could come in while we were handling one already, which caused a lockup. We also finished a very old project t...
Hi folks!
hiii ๐
Hola from 'rado.
Good evening friends. Hope the weekend has treated you and yours well
We have 4 days off in a row here. Free day monday as well.
Wow. I got Friday off coz I took it off from not feeling well :/
I hope the weekend's treated you well so far then @clever summit
I had the whole week off actually. Had worked too many hours so needed to get it down in line with my contract.
So, I treated myself well. ๐
That's great, glad to hear it
Yay, Rotary encoder over I2C!
Maybe I can tinker around with the SAMD09... looks pretty neat!
Argh. Now I will have that tune in my brain the rest of the week,,,,
don't worry, you'll get a reminder on wednesday
I thought rheostat was what we called a potentiometer in middle school
Bye all!
G'night everyone - or good morning to @clever summit !
Time for sleep! Night! ๐
hello
I'm just catching up to last week's shows.
I hope you are feeling better @pearl shoal.
Infinitely better

Good afternoon all you wonderful Product Pickers!
hiya!
Hello, all.
Hello!
Hi everyone!
T minus one minute...
More like T minus whenever JP hits the button. ๐

Live on twitch with bleeps and bloops!
Last stream with Ladyada was a big wait. ๐
Depends on how long it takes to get Lars under control...
YAY!
YT is-a bleepin' an-a bloopin'!
When it is ready, the button hits itself...
Buttonception.
The power of HID?
The Zen of Button.
Blathers? As in blatherin' blatherskite? ๐
Lol
Audio is good!
Yay Blathers! I have some fossils....
That is a small antenna!
I imagine if it was a European antenna it would be smรถl whereas here in the US it would just be small
Lol
Itโs only that way because they say Um a lot
What kind of accuracy do you get out of that? roughly speaking
Well, rough terrain might inhibit performance
Sure, but I am considering something like it for an astrotracker project
Which would be outside, mostly
Whatโs great is I was both joking and also serious about antenna performance
Lots of factors play into how well it will perform. Power, environmental noise, distance between source and destination, obstacles, terrain, reflectivity of the environment
hiyo!
Cheers!
I'd be happy with, like, ~100m, tbh
It's not like the stars are going anywhere
I hope
Accuracy of it will probably be okay at 25m I would imagine
But again lots of factors that affect overall performance so mileage will definitely vary. Only way to know if it will work is to try it ๐
Peru? Aha! Lars is Paddington's evil twin...
Lol
Is it me, or was the original altitude ~140m?
Is JP on a massive plane, slowly ascending?
And by massive plane you mean flat earth.
Heya @lethal lagoon! Hope you're doing well!
hi @waxen thistle ! yes doing well! hope you are too!
Wow, that's pretty accurate!
And nice part about the GPS -- you have a very accurate clock too ๐

Thanks, @haughty quiver ๐

Thanks!
Nice one JP
great stream @haughty quiver !
Bye @haughty quiver, and all. ๐
Thanks so much
@haughty quiver Oops, I missed the stream live. Horizontal dilution is related to Dilution of Precision https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilution_of_precision_(navigation) . Basically, the smaller the number, the more accurate the fix. Anything less than 2 is very good for location purposes.

Hi @rapid hornet
feather 1/4 pounder
Cool board! Need that!
Dropped off in anyone else wants in
Or "Feather Royale" in Europe!

Quarter Feather
Oui oui! ๐ฅ
Those caps are perfect
nice!
After all these decades, we finally have found a use for the Scroll Lock key!
Where did you get those caps @haughty quiver
Very nice caps for that board
those caps are so perfect indeed as no hot spot of light
That board in the shop?
Whoa! Rad
The quarter feather....
Seems perfect for a bird house.
Is the PIR setup to face either way? Wondering why the 6 pins
Woah, TFT on that board? Nice!!!
when a faculty member comes in with a netbook to project for a lecture i cry
13-14 years in technology, might as well be an eon!
Oh wow lol I still have 2 netbooks
My second favorite laptop. I enjoyed working with the mini 9 so much
Love the keyboard, love the mini screen...
@split gazelle Most netbooks have drainage canals for spills, tears, etc.
Hugo you seen avengers infinite war and blackpanther right?
Errrr, they're on my list :/
Wakanda Forever!
We don't do that here lol

Very cool project @split gazelle - it's what I intend to do with mine!
(I like the fixed date for cpy-day)
my USBs were getting a bit overwhelmed i think with the capture card- all is of course working fine now ๐
Interested in your discussion about the built-in buffering in CP - need to look into it for another project
@pearl shoal I got here midway through your PSA โ๏ธ , but I wanted to say I'm so happy that you're doing better.
Thanks @waxen thistle
I liked 8/8 for CP day, since it made a Blinka Ourob-Ouros

We all enjoy the deep dive, as well as all the other shows! ๐
great @sudden slate
@pearl shoal buffering of what?
sweet lighting @proven crow
Toddler car? I thought @proven crow was a giant cruising in a low-rider
Thanks @rapid hornet for the link - I couldn't remember what you said ๐
@rapid hornet you were talking about managing the data stream using a reusable buffer system
@proven crow Very cool. Do add some temperature monitoring to it, just in case of
SSH into a car? That's amazing!
ya, I've been thinking a bit about that
I'd go watch but I'd miss Micha ๐
Python whiplash test!
really cool @proven crow
@proven crow That's so cool!
I've seen that some cars now have DLC/in-app purchases.....so SSHing into a car isn't that far off ๐
2 steps away from downloading a car!
Super cool @proven crow
Thanks everyone! ๐
That's a pretty slick 360 camera!
In fact, in this age of cars being locked down with proprietary, non-repairable circuitboards & encrypted, DMCA-protected parts.....I'd be 100% for an OpenSource car.
Every time I walk into the garage, I'm worried about that lol. I'll work on it!
Or like Tesla calling MMC storage a "consumer part" or whatever it was to get people to pay the 3500$ to replace it when it corrupted from excessive logging
that's a fun netbook @gusty wedge i wouldn't cry if it came into my auditorium
pup!
@rapid hornet I don't remember what you called it but it was something like "MessageBuffer" or the like. Sounded like a way to manage serial-ish data flows
Or I was still loopy from the medicine (I'd only been home a day ๐ )
ah, ya. PacketBuffer
@split gazelle I do plan to refresh it's motherboard with a RISCV as soon as they are available and cheap.
Nice ๐ฐ๏ธ !
Thank you
Cool clock!
@pearl shoal happy you are home ๐
What are you using for the base?
Ooooooo, I love the passive display of sunrise/set

You are all WONDERFUL!

Wait, so lead-free for safety, but worse for your health fumes? ๐
So to make things safer for humans, we needed to make things less safe?
I'm sure lead fumes are not healthier.
But lead doesn't vaporize at soldering temps
I still am looking forward to a @clear matrix + Collin ASMR collabo.
They both have such calming voices.
Find maker jobs in 3D and CAD, Art, Design, Education, Embedded Development, Engineering, Fabrication, Marketing and Communications, and Web Development
For sure! I was also just about to ask if Collin's done audiobooks, but same with Kattni
this is going to be a wild ride
those notes videos are really good ๐
The notes videos are awesome.
Microcontroller=MCU=Marvel Cinematic Universe?????
Blinka's superhero story!
People getting to make their tools of convenience because it's more accessible than ever
cats!
Always appreciate Colin and Kattni (and you all , of course)
When playing with virtual or actual keyboard with the HID module on RP2040, take care. The hid can swamp your computer with key input (independent of focus, thus providing input to whatever program is in focus), making it difficult/impossible to take control without unplugging the darn thing! I got my scars. But loving it.
I had feedback on a job interview today that specifically said my work on CP was a positive to see me being involved outside of just the internal company I work for
I'm sure someone out there decided to hear or come up with the headline "Adafruit used CircuitPython to discover new particle physics on Microcontrollers"
100% nothing is ever "too easy"
that's a standard I don't mind to lower
Blech. Progress is supposed to make things easier, faster, better, and more accessible for everyone. Those who stand in the way of progress are often more of a challenge than the actual work itself.
toys are fun
Cars are worse because we've made it more accessible for people to drive them?
Exactly
"ugggh, Arduino is for kids, I write everything in assembler" tips fedora
I have nearly this exact argument at work about using microcontrollers in industry.
It's very frustrating.
Self-appointed gatekeepers are bad for society. We all took vastly different paths to get here
Nightmares about college? Been there, still having them.
I always describe my research and learning as "playing" and get bad looks from managerial types (and spouse).
And my tools are my toys.
yup still have nightmares, I'm failing this course, I didn't even go to the classes, what is happening!
And side-note to that tweet - contributions may be small in scope, but all are big at scale! Standing on the shoulder of giants and such
I would also say making things look easy is really hard
10 years ago, i used an Arduino for a college project and it was frowned upon since I did not use assembly. Arduino made it "too easy"
More people getting into tech, yay new perspectives and ideas!
It's almost if prolonged periods of intense stress can be traumatic to the human mind. Hmm.
exactly! making things easy means folks can get to the current hard problems sooner
Wait, so I can't copyright the printf() API?
i never understood the whole mentality of "I had to do it the hard way, so the future generations should have to as well."
Shouldn't you be glad mankind is advancing itself?
I think it devalues the struggle some people feel like they went through.
It builds character.
Everyone needs to invent their own way to make fire, or pay someone else to use their method
my understanding is that AMD & Intel cross-license the instruction set itself, but that's my memory of a very abridged version of the truth
If those who traveled the Oregon Trail could know how easy it is to rent a car and travel coast to coast....
Or a train. Or a plane.
afaik ARM doesn't license their ISA
Let's make it easy to fall into the pit of success!
My testimony: A couple years ago I found an arduino kit under the bed that my child had gotten 5 years prior. Now Iโm writing Python code, helping build CP libraries, adding to the CircuitPython core (in C++ code) and programming USB interfaces to microcontrollers that are running custom C code. And now I can use GitHub (barely!), understand and adapt othersโ code and write documentation for others to use all these cool tools.
Exactly! No matter what discipline, getting to that first "win" is massive. Quickly getting "Hello world" to print on screen; blink and LED; solve any problem is HUGE
I'm very similar. I got an Intel Edison kit at a conference and started playing. It was a gateway kit
I know it's been discussed on AAE several times, but it's all about reducing that barrier to entry. You have 5 minutes to capture and keep their attention. Maybe less.
That's so cool, one hecc of a way to get roped in! ๐
"Making things easier and lowering standards everyday" โค๏ธ thanks for making it easier to get into electronics - I don't think I would have otherwise gotten the courage to open up any of my machines and peaked inside otherwise if it wasn't for y'all.
Nowadays, less. My daughter learned yesterday in her technology class how to animate a sprite in Scratch, and she was thrilled! And impressed her brother ๐
I had some some microcontroller work in assembly 20 years ago and thought thatโs what it always was. Saw Arduino about 2 years ago and how easy it was to do things and was blown away and got hooked.
This music is great
@light stump also missed it earlier glad my tip fixed your problem earlier!
Having something "tangible" and substantial that you can show off to those you love and care about....to demonstrate "hey! I've made progress! look at the cool thing I've made!"....that's the goal ๐
@open girder Question: What keeps those selective soldering machines from bridging?
that joke might have worked on aprils fools day
I think surface tension and the flow of solder
Ah, vertigo.
yeah surface tension and gravity ๐
