thanks - chat was offscreen also -
My cable is on order - but I see now in the product site:
Red wire connects to 5V power (from USB host)
Black wire connects to common data/power ground
Green connects to D+ data positive
White connects to D- data negative
( thanks to @ professor "sparkles" ๐ )

@timid plover Note that some (generally cheaper) USB cables do not follow the color code, it's a good idea to check before hooking it to something you care about.
?serverinfo
I'm amused a company on the east coast has a server in the us-west region, but cloud computing is like that.
@prime sentinel it's because I started it ๐
So much has sprung from your effort! I do enjoy this server.
if we're talking pinouts, the pinouts.ru site is really helpful (and like 15 years old or something now) https://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml
Hey! Is this thing on?
Hi @haughty quiver
General beeping and booping going on.

Cardassian: Now, JohnPark....how many pins do you see?
JP: There are.... FOUR..... pins!
That big LED display is awesome. It would be rad if the alphanumeric versions were (easily) available at that size
Inspired by @haughty quiver 's Metro Minimalist clock.
Those HDMI-USB converters are amazing. So cheap! Equivalent ones cost $300 until very recently
@haughty quiver you should try hooking up a Lithium Ion battery and Powerboost 1000C to your Pi 3 A+ to make it more compact.
I think your On-Air sign is lit up now
Hey we're On Air now.
Hi there, nice synth shirt again.
it is an extended back stretch i think from Lars

Hi in all the chats folks
Hi.
fedex-two?
What was the mystery package? the v3 saola-feather?
Remember to take a cell phone or a camera for iNaturalist ๐ โค๏ธ
good afternoon all - my kaluga arrived today! ( waiting for USB breakout cable to arrive ๐ )
Any hack to bridge the S2 so that it can use the internal antenna?
Any updates on the "orange" soc?
high-level synth (hls)
I didn't notice the difference between -i or not till I ordered - then I asked the question here - and learned ( so now I have both - will be looking for the antenna like you have shown today - starting my search now
( will be watching for the part number you found ๐ )
this might be the hack you are looking for https://randomnerdtutorials.com/esp32-cam-connect-external-antenna/
@timid plover yup, that's it, I have an I and a non-I and I can see the difference (tiny tiny resistors) in that little triangle by the IPEX connector
and i did build it last night from the native_wifi branch. so that worked. more or less from scratch to see if it all worked
it built but there was some error with some microchip submodule. which is odd
this "
fatal: not a git repository: h"
fatal: not a git repository: hw/mcu/microchip/../../../../../.git/modules/lib/tinyusb/modules/hw/mcu/microchip
thanks for the digikey link - it looked good enough to place an order ...

i had found this before, not totally up to date but fun https://github.com/kelu124/awesome-latticeFPGAs
I'm here for the deep dives what ever they are
i have an ambition to do some FPGA stuff. so far not realized ๐
@simple fractal I'll recomment Icestudio for starting with FPGAs. You'll be playing with logical gates and leds in no time.
thanks, i did just download that, so step 1, tick ๐
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels.
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks --- watching in the background as I'm handling other challenges
Do you have any intended uses for this i2c soc?
Natural gas explosions are not all that much fun
yuck gas, in mid climate change.
Having the bitstream in a local flash sounds nice. Rebooting fpgas is not...
maybe your research will bring users to adafruit for easy to use solutions!
SportyScott mode
Sports likely has continuous focus on
wifi crashing last week
The learning curve for fpgas is huge, and there aren't any good sources for docs. There is a community called FPGA Wars, but they mainly create content in spanish (Obijuan).
Fpgas will sell like bread when they are at least as easy to use an arduino. Hopefully as easy as cpy...
Yeap, mid crashes on scanning.
you just changed the initialization from { 0 } to default ๐
i guess we could rewatch
( actually I think you did that after signing out )
so when i do git status i get an error. everything builds but error is sad times
fatal: not a git repository: hw/mcu/microchip/../../../../../.git/modules/lib/tinyusb/modules/hw/mcu/microchip
fatal: 'git status --porcelain=2' failed in submodule lib/tinyusb
this was from a fresh clone, submodule update --init
i will try again lol,
did that.
Hey hey, sorry which branch are you doing this on? I have an ESP32-S2 and would like to play along from home ๐
Got it thanks ๐
ok, doing a make now. lets see how lucky i am
yes
i iddnt do the --recursive this time
this is ubuntu20.04 under wsl2. its a race. my laptop vs linux desktiop ๐
Well.. esp32s2's have camera interfaces...
Is there a thermal exhaust port at the end of that trench? It'll be about 2 meters wide and ray shielded.
Maybe take some video you could add it to the Adafruit contruction montage
expose AP wifi_auth_mode_t from scan too?
love to watch other people work :-)
but combining 'street cam' with google street view might conflict with you protecting your shipping address ๐ฆ
the hardware for "esp32-cam" is so nice, small and cheap. But of course, no snaky software so they are a pain to use.
[Star Wars reference -- Death Star trench run]
There a nice couple of dozen reasons why S2 is cool.
my new organization system is fast food trays. stacked up.
bladerunner, enhance
sorry, just realized what i said
nope. all good
Is there a way to dump the filesystem from the board?
So that if there is a filesystem corruption, that image can be used to see the difference.
And when does the fs gets weird?
It happened to me while debugging the neopixel pr, when I changed from stock to neopixel, but I know you said that a change in the flash would make things weird, and I'm not sure if that was it.
well the cucumber flashed and is workng, with whatever code version was on github just now
i like that the cucumber board has two usb-c sockets and a few i2c peripherals ion the board. makes it super easy to explore
connectors i meant
it even came with the antenna ๐
Yeah having the second usb port on a dev board can be very nice. Leads to an even bigger mess of cables though.
and twice as many USB ports in use o_O
wow ๐ฎ that's a lot of ports
I think this dumps the filesystem if I can chop it up.
esptool.py -b 460800 read_flash 0x00000 0x400000 flash_4M.bin
split on .?
are there ways to call into python code from c in circuit python ?
how is the object structured? could you just dump the split into the object's struct to avoid wasted allocs?
Focus has been nice all stream. Last one it was autofocusing.
Would a bitmask work as well for this?
are there other fragments of code that if there was a generic/easy way to re-use python code ( where performance might not be an issue ) -
( I realize that we don't know if someone would be using the ipaddress where they need better performance )
I see makes sense
could strtok be useful here?
1.1/1.0.0.1 seems to be cloudflare
native_wifi build working, now just to get it running on my board
parts called octets ?
wikipedia says:
For this purpose, an IP address is recognized as consisting of two parts: the network prefix in the high-order bits and the remaining bits called the rest field, host identifier, or interface identifier (IPv6), used for host numbering within a network.
Well, you do use verilog. You just don't write it by hand. You python (with nmigen) to do it for you. ๐
it's good exercise ! - and you know you will be the author - and can control the licensing !
๐
hmm, i'm back for training in unrolling loops
would have been right the first time with a loop
Even if you put it in a small loop; isn't the compiler optimization just unroll it?
on would hope
if you are going to rewrite - consider strtok() for parsing
hehe. this is why i'm still in the split boat. let the existing code deal with the parsing, then just reuse the returned list object. ๐
i do remember having lots of arguments about C compilers and PIC microcontrollers
strtok_r() for reentrant
i have a dinner stop soon
wi-fi scanning... expose wifi_auth_mode_t too?
you will be in vacation mode shortly - ( even if only a 3 day weekend ) enjoy!
I haven't seen ESPNow mentioned in the S2 docs. I'm guessing that is what they call mesh now?
your camera froze
yes
naive question -- i've flashed this to my board and get the circuitpython startup on the serial -- should it drop into the interactive command-line?
very still scott
Will mesh be supported?
i think you need the other usb for the repl
at least on the cucumber i flash on one and repl on the othe
nice to have you back!
last lines I get are:
I (1451) cp wifi: reset
Heap summary for capabilities 0x00000004:
At 0x3ff9e000 len 8192 free 8 allocated 8024 min_free 0
....
froze again ๐
yes, in my case the repl will be on the native usb
i'm using a board that has two usb, one is the serial to usb that is used to flash and the other is the native esp32-s2 usb
anfd i do like the two scott , one moving and the other looking side eye
wait, load the term.
is this linux specific?
if you send me that dmesg output, i can compare to the issues i was having on RPi w/Ubuntu
@muted mesa you are able to build this on a pi?
i guess i need some circuitpython code to exercise the wifi
i think i tried on a pi, ran into some issue with esp-idf.
@digital crescent haven't tried. but in a previous project, i would run into USB crashes on reset...
oh
i tried to use a pi to build this, but got an xtensa error that it doesn't exist for arm
Is Scott's camera frozen for anyone else again?
I guess you could import the password from another file
i think i had something similar. i didnt see the point as i have enough laptops to build elsewhere
he knows it's frozen
Scott, another debug datapoint: set the udev logging to debug, and check the syslog. most of my hangs would revolve around the SCSI block/device ordering. just never nailed it down.
Oh okay stepped away for a movement and wasn't sure what happened
Thanks Scott.
thanks, all good. i fixed something. so success. ๐
i am actually learning something doing this.
Thanks Scott! Hopefully the cat comes back next time too.
Thanks for the stream Scott always such a good time!
thanks all!
@modest vector ya, he will be if the sun is out. today is just relatively cold
and now fedex drops off the package ๐
thanks all, I've managed to get this running on my lilygo board ... much fun to be had!
awesome @wispy linden! please make a PR with the board definition for it
will do ๐
thanks!

I just got one of those Trinkets
Yay Trinket M0s are back!
Had a project I wanted a controller for but didn't need a lot of power so got a Trinket and an ItsyBitsy to try out
Itโs the simplest of #Eurorack modules! Only 8 components, including connectors, but gives you capsense touch control of a CV and a gate (albeit at 3v3). All controlled by an @adafruit Trinket M0 and #CircuitPython https://t.co/kCBZgMhD0N
Not me, thx @waxen thistle
I just updated it to support the "rec" button so you can record patterns
The capacitive touch is neat, didn't know it could do that. I could potentially use that
thanks!
Gah, I had a phone call. Gotta rewatch the Trinket Trigger segment.
Yeah, wish the M4 had that feature
Hello, all.
The worst part, it was a scam call. "Power bill" refund. Ugh.
@wispy valley I think capsense is supported in CircuitPython on M4 now
I was called because I'm wanted for social insurance fraud again apparently. Better stock up on some iTune cards for the government

haha we can't see you @haughty quiver , so you're safe
position of the sky? generally, up?
Unless you're on the ISS...
@lean canyon Sidereal time tells you what hour of right ascension is crossing your local meridian. It basically tells you the positions of the stars, so it's not really a "time" even though it's called such.
Sort of a reminder for myself that CircuitPython on M4 chips can do touchio capsense ๐ https://twitter.com/todbot/status/1294012752566992896

In CR, the president has to sing a decree every time there is a new ham radio operator, so it sometimes takes years after you pass the exam ๐ฆ
Plus, Twitch has much less latency. I'm east coast, and it's 2.18 seconds delay to streamer.

thank you @prime sentinel. What should I be looking at on the spec sheet for how much current it uses in the on and off and from the on pin?
Gate-Body Leakage Current?

it's the entire story of making the circuit playground from start to shipping
๐ amazing thanks, just found it
It's a very informative series, a small case study on hardware manufacturing -- you won't find that level of detail even in business courses.
that was a delightful edit and soundtrack
@wispy linden do you do circuits on breadboards? Learn how a traditional schematic version of your breadboard project would look, and get comfortable drawing one (either one you already made, or one you imagine) in the schematic software. It's like its own language.
The Disney Hole In The Ground...
both kicad and eagle can be used for free (kicad is also open source) and there are a lot of internet articles about both of them
then you take your schematic over to the PCB side, place the components, add the copper traces, etc.
I think fritzing can be used for PCBs but I've never tried it
Awesome LED animations. Congrats on the new CircuitPython libraries!
I think it's critical to just expect to spend time -- a lot of time at first -- before using these programs feels natural. Learning the language of schematics is a process too
Thanks @robust horizon Yes, I start with a schematic sketch on paper or Kicad and then breadboard it. Next I put them together on prototype PCB's. I am at the stage where I want to try PCB production and SMD assembly.
mea culpa, at my old job which was NOT adjacent to electronics at all, I'd spend downtime messing with my personal copy o Eagle
For simple circuits this is fine. But complex / integrated boards like Circuit Playground feel a little out of my league right now. ๐
awesome, sounds like you have a great basis already.
in case you don't know we do have a dedicated channel #help-with-hw-design here
Amazing ๐ thanks, I will have a read of that channel too
Having your boards come back anywhere from useless to slightly wrong is part of the game, something else to get used to.
I do a small amount of SMD and it's stll nerve wracking each time I solder down that $5 chip on the board it would take me 3 weeks to get more of, in case I do it wrong
๐ Great insights, thank you. I'm about to place my first PCB order, thru-hole for the first iteration. I'm practicing my SMD hand assembly, but not quite that confident yet.
an idea of how (un)complicated a design of mine might be

Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels.
(and honestly that's mostly limor's design ๐ )
the previous board to this one I did the solder paste and stencil for the first time and .. I think that' s a really good idea when working with such parts, even at small quantities. https://644db4de3505c40a0444-327723bce298e3ff5813fb42baeefbaa.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/d9b7d8571f113be83a59e909da918f76.png and a very cheap hot air gun, not even intended for hot air soldering
Hall Effect: The Next Generation
0.4 milli ohms? wow that's low
I'm quite comfortable hand soldering 0805 and QFN packages so far, in small quantities that works. I'll definitely look at hot air gun though. Great insights, thank you for sharing,
oh nice it measures the current direction too
Thanks for asking and share your progress with us!
this little guy fwiw https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10326
Will do ๐ I'm working on a Circuitpython BLE Neopixel controller to entertain my baby girl.
Nice!
Wah, so cheap ... though 110V only and I'm in Singapore lol
I have the Sparkfun heat gun, haven't used it yet.
60 Amps through that?
Magnify and enhance.
I have the same hot air gun, very nice tool.
@wispy linden there's bound to be something you can find on the local market
For sure, I'll see what I can find
Or you can get this one, it'll burn 4 times as bright for much less than 1/4th as long
... man, watching this stream always makes me order on DigiKey

Adafruit MS8607 Pressure Humidity Temperature PHT Sensor - STEMMA QT / Qwiic https://www.adafruit.com/product/4716
What's the link for the standalone adabox?
Question for the show: Adafruit IO: is โwhile or IF (io.status() < AIO_CONNECTED)โ designed time be called more than just in the โsetupโ part of the Ardunio code.? Looking to call it fairly frequently and integrate it with a FONA SMS Alert if the check fails so I know the WiFi is down. Before even testing wanted to make sure it wonโt cause problems with the server ? Or anything else
Question: I'm building a non-invasive glucometer, so I need to measure very low currents through the skin. I'll need an amp, but I'm not sure which one to use (hoping there's one in the store I just missed....) If it matters, starting with Feather M4 Express and an Airlift for data communication.
Have you seen any slowing of USPS packages?
Cool, thank you!
I have a huzzah32 and it is too far away from my router to connect to the WiFi what should I do?
Question: What kind of sensor can I utilize to detect presence of small animal or children in an automotive interior?
Is there any way to mount the encoder boards in line with the motor instead of radially (on the gear motors)?
The MS8607 can do humidity all the way up to 100% ... long term what is the highest humidity percent you would recommend for the components not to eventually have issues?
@serene garnet I've built good presence detectors with the RCWL-0516 radar sensor
I didn't think about cameras, thanks for the idea Ladyada!
Great show as always guys !! Nice neat new projects
Question: I tried making a PCB through JLPCB after seeing your video on sending a board to them. It worked out great really happy with the results! I'm curious if you have any experience with their pick and place prototyping service or anyone else who you would recommend?
Thank you everyone! Fun show tonight!
Indeed -- another awesome evening of shows. Thank you again, @open girder & everyone. I look forward to Wednesdays for these two shows.
Thanks for the advice Lady Ada! I will give the JLPCB pick and place service a go, my application is pretty simple so I think they'll have all that I need.
That Clue menu program...I'm going to try that out ๐
Thanks @spring heath and @clear matrix for including me in the report
Thanks @open girder and good night. ๐
I look forward to @clear matrix CircuitPython narrative each week. Thanks!
Indeed, @clear matrix does such an absolutely excellent job in producing a consistent & very polished video newsletter. Thank you for all the effort that goes into it.
aww i love bad apple video, totally had to start humming the music!

I wonder if it will get to $12000 before the end of the stream...
it could be cool if you have multiple of matrix on the case and when open those pop up
Taking the diffuser off made it worse.
the apparent flickering of the LED panel gives it that extra cyberpunk feel
Eye on BPI?
