Peeps stuck at home.
Hey everyone, also wanted to share a cool course on PCB Design starting in a couple weeks. Not a product pitch here, this is a completely free course being sponsored by Digi-Key, Keysight, Altium, and more. Goes through some more in-depth electronics theory and design in all the popular EDA's, including KiCad. Check out teachmepcb.com and sign up -- they're fabbing and assembling badges for 50 random people there as well.

i used pt's quote from last night "ask yourself what it means to be an employer" today when i was making another plea to my boss to let everyone be remote (we're just av techs, classes have gone remote) so i truly appreciate seeing the example adafruit is setting
Thanks, everyone! We can do this because of y'all!
I'll have to have V sculpt a baby me for a baby bjorn on baby yoda ( 👶 )
@ripe blade do you have a link to yours? I missed tonight’s show. (Meant to join but family dinner takes presidency )
I put in my order last night and Snake Plissken must be the courier!
I'd do it but it would look more like Quato
The medical device manufaturers would need to contact you.
The exemption rolls through them.
They are being manufactured.

@earnest cipher 24 hours. 😉
👍
Being on Discord and the other socials brings us together anytime
Something tells me we're not going to have an issue with people not calling in
We're all in this together. 🙂 And there's nowhere else I'd rather be on a Wednesday evening.
I would never wish for the situation as it is but it's really great having so many more people online communicating, sharing, helping and supporting. It's one of the best things to come out of the situation
I'm hoping mail-in voting becomes a thing everywhere in the US too.
totally
That's the real gem of humanity -- even in times of darkness, we want to make things better.
If you know of folks looking for communications during this time, this Discord server is great
So many projects!
Great to see all the great projects and an engaged community! What a great format for sharing.
Hey @orchid jungle - welcome and thanks for coming in

Anyone who won't be able to get an OHS badge can still help hack on software with a CLUE. Come to the #badge-hacking channel on the OHS2020 discord!
Does anyone know how long it will take for tonight's show and tell to be uploaded to YT?
It depends on YouTube's encoding bot

@cyan holly what assembly house did you use for the OSH watches?
@ripe blade SparkFun!
tbh I had the same q
⏱️
@haughty quiver's MakeCode Minute was 2min 32sec of using Javascript to press everyone's buttons!
⏱️
How many people didn't get on tonight? I didn't but that is okay. I had bad lighting.
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
one good thing about the social distancing is being able to catch the shows i normally can't see live
1 of 17,000 I like the odds
@split gazelle Yep.
@spare burrow I didn't either but posted in #show-and-tell
👍
Thought about putting myself on the job board but I'm woefully out-of-date: only know PTH not SMT.
Oh! That's a great (private) school in SF
@halcyon elbow feel free to @ me in a channel if you want some pointers. It's not as bad as you might think
Adafruit IO is the easiest way to get your projects onto the Internet of Things!
She is sooooo over the top with her projects.
If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing
Make sure you get the right foam. They have different expansion rates.
@cyan holly what assembly house did you use for the OSH watches?
@ripe blade SparkFun sponsored the assembly, Digikey the parts
Also, it is highly flammable straight out of the can. 😮
Don't ask me how I know that...
gotta love the chemical engineering wonder that is closed-cell polys... 👩🔬
As always, do anything with paint & adhesives with proper PPE (if anything is available) -- and ideally in a place with plenty of ventilation, such as a garage with the door open 🙂
I learned that the hard way first time I used fiberglass resin for a project...
We have a construction site across a parking lot from us. Parking lot is empty, but the construction continues unabated.
pile drivers get annoying after a while...
back7 mentioned the Cyberdeck group on the show, if anyone's interested come hangout https://discord.gg/Tv37jvd
That's an awesome looking dev kit
awesome looking chip
@remote scroll awesome, I was looking for that, thanks
I think this is the dev kit shown: https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-tools/Development-Kits/nRF5340-PDK
worth mentioning we also have a website that just went up. https://www.cyberdeck.cafe/
ooh neat
it's there for group members to have a tech blog they can write for or show off their projects and be more permanent then a discord channel
awesome
That's a nifty breadboard

@cyan holly Nice. They look great.
@open girder Question: For factory machines such as the Pick & Place and Selective Solder, how much maintenance do they need during a full shutdown?
Adafruit HTS221 - Temperature & Humidity Sensor Breakout Board - STEMMA QT / Qwiic https://www.adafruit.com/product/4535
@open girder Q: A business question for PT. What is your take on the estimated TAM of open source hardware? If you can share, what is Adafruit's approx annual gross (no need to answer if this is private)? The reason I ask is that if someone wants to start an open source HW company, they need to understand if it would be a viable market for someone to build a business on. Thanks.
Oh my, that looks nice.
@rancid depot what is TAM?
Critical advice beyond handwashing: Be very nice to the health care community. They will be doing amazing, hard work.
TAM: total available market or market size
👍
tough to get that type of info from google for open source HW
how many times are you planning to re-watch watchmen?
Are you still shipping to MicroCenter?
Question: If I purchase adafruit stuff through Amazon will there be a delay? Or should I just go through DigiKey?
Q: I want to build an outdoor control panel with a 4-digit, 7-segment LED display like https://www.adafruit.com/product/3127 . Any suggestions for how to make something like that reasonably water and dust-proof?
What is the discount code tonight?
@lusty linden no discount code because the store is closed
Boohoo
"Sometimes all I have is vengeance." ~PT
@stiff wedge are you the Fog Creek Joel?
I agree if you can go give blood.
@lusty linden there are more important things
When are they reopening... I must have missed that
depends on the pandemic
@wanton dome yep
Question: When are you planning to release the APDS-9500 breakout board? SPI support?
@stiff wedge awesome 🙂
sighs
@open girder (maybe an engineering q) The STM32 H747 is an arm M7F + M4F dual core, with about 2MB of flash. What makes the N5340 so unique from other cortex-M multi/dual core?
I missed the end.
Andromeda Strain is timely now.
Well, I’m donating tomorrow in Elmsford NY, and I run the local ambulance. For me more important is supporting ada fruit.
Is the TV show Watchmen good to watch if I haven't read the graphic novel?
@stiff wedge easiest is to put in a case. something like this:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/903
ka1os: It's a while since I saw the original.
mad props to adafruit for keeping everybody on the payroll while they close their operations in new york. that's hard
I knew Lindeloff would knock it out of the park. If only they'd continue the series... 😦
I like your infinite game business philosophy. Fantastic.
Planning to build a two wheel balancing robot with the sense feather. Will the built in sensor work as a IMU for that purpose? Do you think CircuitPython will be fast enough to do the control?
@waxen thistle i'd read the graphic novel first
Greetings from Hong Kong. You all stay safe.
Are you still shipping to MicroCenter?
you too @signal matrix !
Everything item is 100% off! Number of available items: 0.
have you considered a bluefruit gemma or would that not work with the board size?
chuckles
If I'm bored and want to build a robot that I can expand upon over time (and can find the stuff from digikey) any recommendations?
Gamblor: the real trick is building a robot that can upgrade /itself/ over time.
So many puppy videos to watch...
@nova totem start with a frame first
@open girder @rapid hornet @paper peak and the rest of the team, thank you. You guys rock and you will weather this storm and come out strong. I will always support you all 💪
Time team on You Tube. Near on to 400 episodes
For some laugh, check out Michelle Wolf's and Taylor Tomlinson's new specials on Netflix. SOOO good
Taylor's new one is good!
Duewester: I should look for the one from my village.
Nightmare mode unlocked.
Have you used any projects using Dynamical servos from Robotis?
@rapid hornet - thanks.
Happy thought - UPS tells me the order I placed this morning will arrive on my birthday.
@halcyon elbow where?
@open girder suggested setup for live streaming? Best practices?
Thanks have a feather and circuit playground!
Q: what do you think about Cortex-M7? I'm really impressed by teensy 4.0, wondering if you have a feather in the works with similar specs
Development Boards, Kits, Programmers – Evaluation Boards - Expansion Boards, Daughter Cards are in stock at DigiKey. Order Now! Development Boards, Kits, Programmers ship same day
@halcyon elbow Which little town?
Yeah thanks for shipping out those last minute orders.
ohh watch out for factory ghosts
@halcyon elbow looks like about 4-6 in that area.
@stiff wedge ^
AndyCallaway: Broad Town, a village about three miles from Royal Wootton Bassett
Might be listed as Binknoll
Question:
Once you made a Gyroscope comparison, any plan to make a new one with the new Gyros?
Haven't lived there for about 35 years but I was born there, so I still get to claim it.
@halcyon elbow I was in Calne for three years.
That might be Arturo's
AndyCallaway: It's a small world but I wouldn't want to have to paint it.
Lol.
For streaming . Get a good mic before a good camera.
There's a channel for virtual conference tips in the Open Hardware Summit discord channel -- and there are a LOT of excellent tips for streaming in there:
Krisp AI to block out background noise? Just saw it today.
Another question (if they aren't rationed yet) I saw the Zephyr Feather stm32F405 / intro guide; I also saw that the "adafruit_feather_m0_basic_proto" is now also now zephyr supported. Can we expect guides on SDcard integration or other Adafruit sensors/parts libraries for use with zephyr?
Great show guys.
Goody goody, been missin the DoLA shows
i missed the show
Thanks @open girder and good night all! 🌘 ⭐ 🪐 🌎
i fell to sleep
thanks @proper trench and @open girder !
thanks @open girder! to all of you: stay safe, be smart, and do what you can. This too shall pass.
We'll all ride high in the saddle again
You're Great. Hang in there.
Thanks @open girder @proper trench @velvet beacon and everyone! You guys are the best
Janisku7: I think you can watch it after the fact on YouTube
G'night all. Take care, and be well.
Thank you!
See yens then
thank you for a great set of streams and for being awesome
Stay strong, everyone. Keep on hacking!
@unique bridge I don't know of any upcoming zephyr guides but @gray valley was the author
AndyCallaway: Don't see many of those in Caln 😉
Thank you @open girder for an awesome extended evening of shows, they are a welcome distraction from the daily nightmare we all collectively exist in -- and you folks remind us of the kindness and compassion we all should have for each other.
imissed the show
I'm really excited to see more Desk of LadyAda!
one of my favs was where she did a voiceover of her routing a board. Not something you get to see much
Yes the thought process
i woke up and its just started well it was overtime
brb, rebooting my wireless bridge. 😕
@halcyon elbow got that same problem
@shell mason you can watch the recordings :)

GetOffMyLawn: My wife complained that I haven't done enough of that with our daughter.
@graceful heart What level are you thinking? Breadboarding? Soldering?
Third grade, so connecting LEDs and talking about how electricity works
@graceful heart don't know where you are but "Snap Circuits"
Come to think of it, she did make a gummy bear music keyboard with a Makey Makey thing on school open day.
now i totally get nightmares
(STEM night)
@bronze garden almost certainly some guides at that level on ALS 👀
GeeBob: I should check out my daughter's snap circuits.
I'd suggest the CLUE board and the Circuit Playground Express. No additional parts needed, no soldering, runs off USB, super beginner friendly.
@graceful heart https://learn.adafruit.com/guides/beginner
I've got a bunch of stuff in the junk box, looking for educational lesson plan type stuff
That CLUE looks awesome from what I've seen.
(it is)
Not sure I want to start her off with a microcontroller but I want a CLUE for myself 🙂
And when you want to add additional components, you can easily do so for either board.
how you get when there is no shipping now
@wanton dome that looks awesome!
The Feathers are intriguing too but there are so many of them I never know what to order.
Starting with leds and resistors, switches, etc. is a great place to start.
Still want a Gemma M0
I like the CLUE and CPX because of how super easy it is to have a finished result, and that beginner-friendly transactional nature gets youngsters super excited about what else they can make....
When I was a wee lad I had a neat little "N in 1" kits with springs for contacts between different components. Wonder if they still make them.. 👀
siddacious: I used to see those for sale in Tandy.
I had so many of those kits. I am pretty sure I just fried most parts
@wanton dome my brother built a true cat whisker receiver. I got a spring receiver with a germanium diode
GeeBob: OA91?
@halcyon elbow I'd half to look now.
I had a digital one of those kits... my gateway into all this.
@wanton dome OMG I had that exact kit pictured!
@urban flower I combined two circuits from one of those things to make a motion alarm for my "invent a thing" assignment in third grade
no one understood what it was and said I just bought a thing
LOOK AT ME NOW BOBBY!
I built an AM radio that didn't work. 🙂
I have a a doppler shift motion sensor somewhere that doesn't work
Has anyone tried the IMSAI8080 Replica kit from The High Nibble yet? I just received it.
mmm, high nibble
0xF0
@halcyon elbow I tried a FM transmitter that didn't work either
siddacious: That's a high nybble
oh? What is a High Nibble then?
shrugs
🌲 🍔
I suspect those are for sale in Amsterdam (but only for take out)
The guy makes the kits by hand in Australia.
I wish I made stuff by hand.
dooooo itttt
siddacious: I'm resisting the urge to throw away the components I've been hoarding.
Machine code refference.
You do every time you pick up a hand tool
Zeke: I used to do Z80 machine code. Done some 8086 too.
I know a guy who has quadrapelegia who does CAD in Fusion 360 so I think you can manage 😉
@halcyon elbow don't do it! Make a thing! Anything!
It's the PC they use in the film War Games
I should buy a spot face cutter.
or: teach someone how to make something 🙂
Zeke: More of a WOPR man, myself.
In his beadroom to call SAC
Wasn't that an IMSAI?
I always wanted an acoustic coupler
Altair had metal toggle switches. IMSAI had red and blue plastic switches.
Zeke: It's many, many years since I saw the film.
...but now you've got me wondering whether the PDP-1 had LSB on the left or right.
I really miss my ole BBS days. Never got to finish L.O.R.D. cause swizzlestick moved to another state 😭
...because the PDP-8 confuses me.
I was building them at the time from home brew computer clubs. Didn't get the Apple I because I couldn't afford a teletype to attach to it.
ok, back to the tester before calling it a night.
great chat everyone, thanks for the hang 👋
Zeke: I left my Teletype in the UK
I left my heart in SanFrancisco.
I'll be over on Freenode if anyone wants to chat.
This is all a bit newfangled for me.
^
hey @cyan holly you still in Europe? 😉
@void widget yes, in berlin 🙂
Good afternoon all you wonderful folks!
👋
I am taking life one day at a time.
We're well and hunkered down at home. And you?
Hunkering is my normal lifestyle, so not much has changed for me. 🙂
And occasionally listening to bleeps and bloops.
Always something musical happening here.
hello all
Bleeps and blopps live on Twitch
Receiving The Signal
You can't stop the signal, Mal.
Fully modulated!
Facebook doesn't seem to want to connect...
Wibbly wobbly bleepy bloopy...
Hey
YouTube is having some buffering issues. Too many work-at-homers.
I may just jinx it, but here in Colorado, no buffering (yet)
2.3 sec latency to streamer, that's awesome for Twitch
It's better now.
🎉
Voice levels are perfect!

JOHN PARK'S WORKSHOP LIVE 3/19/20 Chauncey + Wash Timer @adafruit @johnedgarpark #adafruit
Do discount codes work on Digikey 😜
Hello all
look cyberPark
Equipment question - do you have a recommendation of a good device for switching on and off AC power from a digital IO port?
(This would be for things like Xmas lights, so not a massive load)
@hoary stag https://www.adafruit.com/product/2935 (note: this will not ship, but is an example)
Create the Internet of Things with safe, reliable power control. Universal control voltage 3-60VDC or 12-120VAC connects to Arduino, Raspberry Pi, PIC or other micro. Or connect directly to a 12V to 48VDC or even 120VAC circuit. High voltage wiring and safety hazards are el...
Does the relay control all 4 AC ports at once?
i believe that each one reacts differently, like on always on, one always the opposite of the io cennection, etc
Okay, thanks @gaunt plume and @next kayak !
also that is out from question because outlets
check the product page to be sure
Some are normally off, some are normally on, it varies depending on the product version -- but I have that product and it takes all the guesswork out of building your own relay.
is a yellow hobby motor a 3.3 volt motor?
the yellow TT motors like 5-6 volts better than 3v
@waxen thistle any with outlets what works in eu?
ok, i was just wondering. thanks @buoyant sable
@shell mason Check the specs, but I'm going to assume it's 110v -- not necessarily EU's 220v compatible
It looks like wood.
sockets not compatible
that johnpark think could be like legs have sensors and things
maybe search the socket type after power plug relay module
hallowing to eye
that would be cool
@next kayak the product page says 120 rpm at 3v, 250 rpm at 6v
ok
