Yeah
In shield form factor
The rounded rectangle drawing can get a little wonky, but I substituted a function that used lines and arc or rects and arc depending in if you wanted it filled.
I've never seen one in shield form factor
Fun story, @sage aspen , on how Steve Jobs had to convince Bill Atkinson that round rects were a thing that needed to happen.
Thanks for sharing that. It was a good story.
Surely.
Seems like every new GUI gets a moment of rounded corners hotness.
I remember our designers wanting to do them on the web in 2008, and the awful HTML/JS hacks that ensued.
Heh, yeah. Drop shadows used to be difficult too.
So the smart display I was trying to remember using was the Gameduino2.
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1654
Yeah, that looks like an interesting product.
It was ambitious, worked well, a little pricey, and probably ahead of its time.
Similar to a PyPortal
Nice
that FT800 graphics coprocessor, or something like it, might be worth a second look, given all the new CP badges/games/portals
Yeah, that could be interesting to integrate into a new board.
It seems to mesh with the recent general Adafruit trend to offloading/delegating
I'm thinking M4 + airlift, and almost epaper + SRAM
Yeah, that could be fun.
This appears to be their latest version of Gameduino 3X:
https://excamera.com/sphinx/gameduino3/
neat
Been wanting to get CP and/or Arduino working on the nRF52840 dongle (PCA10059). Found this guide that uses a Pi instead of a JLink.
https://www.rototron.info/circuitpython-nrf52840-dongle-openocd-pi-tutorial/
Thanks, @sage aspen for the love you're giving the guides. Much appreciated. Good chatting, too.
You're welcome and it was good chatting. ๐
@sage aspen the FT800 may have been swept up some weeks ago ๐
Ok, cool @wanton dome. I know exactly what you mean.
Hey all, does anyone know if there's a pinout for the mapping of this anywhere?
Or should it be the one I use for the guide @open girder & @proper trench want? ๐
Assuming it maps the same (and it looks like it might), this product might get much more popular
@pearl shoal I'm not aware of one, but I know a guy who makes awesome pinout diagrams ๐
I thought about cobbling up a Feather adaptor for the similarly shaped ItsyBitsy M0/M4, @pearl shoal :
So, you could make your own with the FeatherWing Proto, and a Perma-Proto:
@slow spire I designed something similar for the ItstBitsy M4. Needed a breadboard friendly version for testing. Not Feather compatible but close in size. https://github.com/CedarGroveStudios/ItsyBitsyBreadboardAdapter
@slow spire Yeah, I hacked one together when I was waiting for the Feather M4 Express to come out, and the ItsyBitsy M4 was available.
@slow spire I definitely want to support the imx rt like the teensy has but I'm not sure when I'll find the time

I havent checked yet but does adafruit sell like smd parts for general use
I want to buy these smd parts from mouser but the shipping is a ridiculous 7$ for a 2$ order
the shipping will be about that from adafruit, not their fault though, ups prices tend to suck
yeah
but mouser is in texas, and im also in texas
adafruits in NYC so shipping is gonna be expensive anyways

hi yall! happy wednesday!
hi sophy!
Hi @lethal lagoon
Hi, @lethal lagoon
Hi @sage aspen ! Hi @lavish patrol !
hi thar!
ooh nice find @haughty quiver
right?!
@haughty quiver Thrift shops!
always
Hi really want to show my project how can I join?
@haughty quiver I keep finding nothing good at my local thrift, time to look for another
After 72 years, that flashgun still didn't need to say, "My batteries are flat, and it's getting dark." ๐
Yard sales, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales -- and it's a hobby that's hit or miss, without a doubt.
true that
@steep pilot ๐
thing about thrift stores is you have to go often, and be willing to walk out with nothing sometimes ๐
@maiden tangle https://streamyard.com/sEQmxKR3F4
@haughty quiver Thanks
I'm also lucky that I'm able to browse sales/thrifts in rural PA -- where there are far fewer people and generally lower prices.
I think @hard hollow and @rocky reef have capped this project.
Hats off to another excellent project.
And to Erin's project, which one of those crystals power the Stargate?
My audio just went scrambled. Yours?
Audio OK here
My video is a bit frizzy, but my thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort cable is closer to retirement than @haughty quiver's flashgun battery.
YES so excited for this mask board !

Whoever said you are making code too easy never spent 7 days a week fighting flawed compilers that get data types wrong and debuggers with major timing errors.
Lol.
i'm guilty too ladyada. you're not alone! ๐
My parents kept the protective shipping plastic on their livingroom furnature except when we had guests.
I leave the screen protectors on until I need to photograph it.
On some devices, the protective plastic does a disservice -- it prevents heat dissipation.
I knew this guy once who bought a new computer, and kept it in its styrofoam packing while he used it.
What a good idea.
Have you found that more makers have moved on from Arduino to other languages (Python, MakeCode, etc)? Also, any plans for a Grand Central with an ESP32 co-processor? Thanks!
Which feather is better the m0 express or the m4 express. In a general way?
If you are a beginner kind of advanced do you need an oscilloscope??
@maiden tangle It depends on what you want to work on. If you're doing mostly digital stuff, you may find a Saleae or other logic analyzers more useful. If you're doing more analog stuff a oscilloscope would be very useful. Either way there is plenty of learning to be had before you need either one
Do you plan to translate some of your guides to Spanish?
Questions: CircuitPython on Teensy 4.0? Feather adapter for Teensy 4.0?
@open girder
If you need any help contact me
@maiden tangle If you're looking for a budget device, consider the Analog Discovery 2. It's an oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and more. It typically goes on a steep discount around Black Friday.
Any recommendations for a buck boost converter to power a Raspberry Pi letโs say 5.25V 3A?
(646) 248-7822
A monster mask? It was a graveyard smash...
Paul has said that "Teensy 4.0 is the same size and shape as Teensy 3.2, and retains compatibility with most of the pin functions on Teensy 3.2." so the question is does anything that's different impact pins on the Feather breakout @slow spire !
Question What's the fastest SPI frequency I should try to drive an ST7735/ST7789 safely with Teensy 4.0? Tried 40MHz, and it seems to work.
@open girder
And @maiden tangle, Digilent has been very supportive to students in the past, offering steep discounts to those in school. It's worth taking a look into if you're interested. And congrats on winning the Monster Mask!
I'm going to test it out when I get a chance, @slow spire
@lavish patrol The stock was gone in a flash!
That's one happy Juan.
Thanks, @haughty quiver . Here's me trying 40MHz; no DMA, yet.

Hereโs the new Teensy 4.0 running an Adafruit Industries hi-res TFT display, with an ST77xx library modified to attempt 40MHz SPI.

oh my, that's hilarious watching Ladyada w the eyes on :]
OK.. now it needs some gaze tracking on the back of the board.
Sanity? Us?
@open girder Thanks again for another evening of awesome shows!
It would be cool if we can program it to detect sound direction and have the eyes look in that direction
@slow spire that's looking really nice. Fast!
Thanks, @open girder ๐
@odd stream Or maybe an accelerometer or gyro for quick & dirty estimation through head movement, like the ears you made.
@paper schooner There's a mic connector... if it can do stereo...
And goodnight all. ๐
@vernal mulch It's a reference to "Your Moment of Zen" from The Daily Show
@odd stream IT CAN LISTEN TO YOUR EYEBALLS
โWhich services are listening to your eyeballs?โ โ Buzzfeed
if the mic connector doesn;t do stereo.. maybe we can connect a second one to it
@haughty quiver They're mechanical, so I expect they make some sound when you move them.
ew
haha
lol
"slurp, glurp"
@haughty quiver That's when you re-move them.
or maybe more like a tectonic-plates-scraping sound?
maybe two of the new proximity boards pointed at an eyelid to detect the lens bump moving around
Oooh โย joystick, buttons, or cap touch maybe for changing gaze on mask
Touching the nose bridge goes cross-eyed maybe.
i immediately thought "buy 2 and mount them back-to-back, add cmos camera, win."
that way you don't have to walk into walls while wearing them (though, not sure i like the reduced comedic factor)
If you can't laugh at yourself, someone else might do it for you if you walk into a wall ๐
What the heck is up with YouTube's post-roll recommendations for Ask an Engineer?!

@wanton dome they'll download the files and print the next ones
space ain't cheap!
Scott, do you have partial refresh working on any of the black-and-white displays?
I do partial ram update when I can but not the full display
I mean partial update on the eInk displays that you just demoed on Show and Tell.
great job @fallow fractal ! Very tight design
@slow spire ya, I don't trigger a partial refresh. most of the chips don't support it
I need to be able to use eInk/ePaper in prototypes, and avoid the full flash-flash-flash during a demo.
@rapid hornet That's cool. I know y'all are busy getting everything up and running in CP.
On Arduino, people have successfully implemented partial refresh on various Waveshare/GoodDisplay displays.
code is here: https://github.com/tannewt/circuitpython/tree/epd
ya, these are from gooddisplay too
Cool; I'll check it out. Great tip on hacking 3rd party displays to use Adafruit driver board. My designers are always asking for uncommon sizes of stuff.
I tried to run a full terminal on one of the big waveshare modules, it worked... until the constant refreshes from boot messages killed the display, so be careful of refresh rates
@fallow fractal that's why I'm redoing the refresh model. now you must call refresh yourself
the only time it'll automatically refresh is once the code is finished
@rapid hornet that's super smart
Yeah, I know from my reading that after a certain amount of partial updates it's necessary to do the conventional full-screen update.
and it's rate limited
Kindle, and the reMarkable tablet do partial screen updates most of the time. A great example is the continuous writing on the reMarkable:
any idea what panel they use?
I'll find out and DM you.
Trinket M4? You mean Itsy Bitsy?
Yep!
Sweet demos, y'all!

@pearl shoal it haz address padz
Hey @open girder & @proper trench I have a Question for the Ask part...
The joystick standard I am mimicing sends 12V and then wants the joystick to send back 6V +/- 1.2V back. That is it uses the "center 5th" of the voltage it sends. Is that so that it can handle voltage drop over the wires? It seems strange that it uses such a small band.

I have never understood the end-game of the venture funding approach.
I'm delighted that both my day job (LessonPix) and charity (ATMakers) have been able to (like Adafruit) remain debt-free and without any obligations to outside concerns. That lets it remain simple: execute well, watch your cash flow, and treat your people well.
I've been an employee on both sides of the private/public company fence. There are pros and cons to both, but Bill nailed it -- regardless of where you're at, you have to deliver and treat people well.
@waxen thistle Agree 100%. I work for a company that started as a start up, IPOd a few years ago, and then was acquired by a private equity firm and became private again in December. Culture and character and values are what count.
Question for later: Will the storage module in MakeCode work in MakeCode Arcade for the PyGamer (ever?)
Question for later: I have a couple of Lipo batteries where the wires broke off too close to the battery to solder new ones on. Whatโs the correct/environmentally sound way to dispose of them?

Question for Later: on the 3D magnetometers - are these "compass type" magnetometers that work on the poles? Or the kind that reacts to local magnets?

Some need special care around magnets, as they can be permanently affected.

some good info on editors:
https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/creating-and-editing-code
Notepad is probably putting some unexpected characters in the file (or incorrect line endings, or messing up the indentation, or who knows what.
Unfortunately, Arduino's online IDE has support for only a few boards outside those made by Arduino itself.
(646) 248-7822
I've been a fan of VS Code by Microsoft, but Mu is hands down an excellent entry point for coding with CircuitPython.
The flip side is that Arduino is open source and archived - if it stops supporting the boards we need we can fork it. Similar to TeensyDuino

If you're not 100% comfortable working with mains power (wall power) -- you're best off using the above relay module or a PowerSwitchTail.
If you're comfortable with mains power, then a relay featherwing or similar product might work for you.
Mains power @ 110v (USA) or 220v (many other parts of the world) can easily cause serious injury or worse. Whereas 3.3v or 5v power can cause harm, it's much less likely -- as always, follow all appropriate safety practices.
