What an epic model. wow!
need more dragons to table
can you wear the dragon as a bow tie please?
with flame?
Lol.
Dragon bowtie with flame
2 meter isn't reversible though, only the shorter one.
more reversible dragons
Bow ties are cool. In fact, "drakaris" is bow-tie in the time lord language ๐
@cinder wind thanks for discovering the reversible USB cables for us.
dragon with helping hands
Audio's getting echoey again.
Sounded ok to me....
paying closer attention.
I do get a bit of a hollow room hard sound reflection -- but probably due to the ambient environment (lack of sound absorbers, etc)
it go echoy a little bit sometimes then recover
@shell mason Yes. It's drifting in and out.
Hmm, I hear a twinge of it too now....when they talk louder or lean closer to each other, the 2nd mic pics it up.
But it's like 5% of what it was before.
@shell mason That didn't go so well.
That heat set press is pretty hot.
@waxen thistle Don't press the point...
Is that recycled from the NYC ball drop project?
Mic Drop project?
I say combine the two -- have a countdown for each heat-set insert, and play Auld Lang Syne when hitting the bottom.
MAKE it a New Year!
Now I'm thinking about an adapter for my dremel drillpress.
great idea @odd stream
ball to top when power is on for solder the ball light up
Yeah, basically something to mount an iron.
The stick vise is simple, but it's super popular with lots of mods available.
Same goes for Panavise -- you might find alternative brands & products, but if you want to lean into a large library of add-ons (official and community), look at the big players like stickvise and panavise.
spacemouse
๐คข
i went to space lol
that version looks like it should be made from cast iron. love it
Ok, part of me wants to mod that with a Mr. Bucket children's toy just for the novelty.
Cast iron -- art deco styled you're thinking?
A heat-set insert from the Gotham universe.
miter saw --- that's a rough cut. You're better off with a metal band saw if you have access to one, or even a hand saw with a blade for metal.
Right on! Most ubiquitous living hinge is the lid of a Tic Tac box.
๐ฌ
it's all one piece and they just make a tiny bit of it thin enough to bend.
solder iron heating and such for showing flame color
A hinge guaranteed to fail, but designed to fail long after the product is consumed.
Also the containers for dental floss.
now andy is dancing floss dance?
Lol.
@hard hollow @ornate coyote Thanks for another awesome show!
Awesome Show
Game dev on the pybadge in MakeCode is outrageously simple!

Thanks @hard hollow and @rocky reef ๐
@haughty quiver If there was only a library of example videos for MakeCode, say about a minute long......
Bye all. See you back here in eight hours. ๐
thanks for hanging out folks!
๐
@haughty quiver I won't lie, I was expecting the game badge to be released before the pyportal, just because of the utter plethora of videos being made for the MakeCode + gaming. ๐ฎ
Time travel can get confusing.
quantum travel can get confusing
And so no one misunderstands me, I'm totally happy either way ๐
Yeah it's not like any franchise lately has been using time travel as a plot device.
I haven't seen Endgame yet, so you better not be hinting spoilers!
Flash, Star Trek Discovery, The Orville
Ooo, Legends of Tomorrow -- but to be fair, that's a time traveling show.
yeah literally
I'm really upset with Youtube. Their video suggestions on the homepage had videos with obvious spoilers in the title. Just a heads up @haughty quiver if you don't want things ruined for GoT/Endgame.
Going to see it tomorrow night, avoiding internet!
I was helping set load in at the high school the other day and a kid came in and declared "Thanos is Rosebud" so at least cinema isn't dead.
To be fair, I barely know that reference myself but only because I haven't seen Citizen Kane.
I know, I'm a horrible person and I should stop what I'm doing right now and watch it.
I never was blown away by it, honestly. But still impressed a current high school student had that arrow in their wry humor quiver.
Indeed ๐
are the shows still on for today? Wondering if they are on hold because of PyCon.
Noe & Pedro mentioned them in their show this morning
I know that show & tell is on
I'm supposed to discuss our "bake-off" on the heat inserts

Now I'm hungry...
Meatmas is our own little "Festivus" - Wednesday before Christmas we have friends (no family!) over for lots of smoked meat.
And @waxen thistle that's actually an espresso rub
<-- speechless
I'm over in northern NJ, and although there are a few decent BBQ places near us -- it's not Texas or Missouri or Kansas. Plus, I don't get to break out the smoker as much as I'd like living in an apartment.

@waxen thistle Yep, you'd get smoke stains on the ceiling...
You can cheat an espresso rub pretty easily - equal parts sugar, salt, instant coffee - add garlic & pepper (cayenne, black, etc) to taste.
(I'm thinking we all skipped dinner)
I can just grind some beans for espresso

Hi everyone, I'm a total begging I have a simple project and need step buy step help please.
*beginner
@eager cobalt I think #help-with-projects would be a great place to start with that ๐
What's your project, @eager cobalt ?
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Hi ... question for once the show gets into answering .. can the INA260 be used for really low current .. such as sensing uA level / I want to see the results of a โsleepingโ Huzzah or other MCU
Hi @slow spire I would like to make a flying butterfly. I was advised to get a micro servo, trinket mo and pager motor. I think I will need two motors. Can two motors be used with one battery? This is my first project ever and I am completely lost.
Dino sprite animation courtesy of https://twitter.com/scissormarks
was there an Enumclaw phase?
There goes that word again...
@eager cobalt , are you're looking at this as your motor? Watch the video. I'm not sure if will move fast enough to actually fly. https://www.adafruit.com/product/3871
These are very unusual motors, but we thought they could be handy for projects that need a small geared-down motor. At the core is a 'pager motor' - a small thin DC motor that runs ...
yes that is the one adafruit support @slow spire suggested
Does it need to fly, or just look nice?
it will stay on a board and I just need the wings to open and close
it's for display, i'm a designer
Well, that motor should work nicely then.
this is my first robotic project
i have 0 idea how to connect everything and how to program the trinket. stupid level 100
Question for the MC Engineers (when we get to that part)...
We ( @haughty quiver, @paper peak, and I) have been working with Bryce Johnson at Microsoft on using CircuitPython with the XBox Adaptive Controller.
There are some challenges with the XAC USB ports that are also impacting using MakeCode as a Joystick/Gamepad controller.
What's the best way to get some of the fixes/improvements through the Microsoft development cycle?
Can you help push? (Bryce seems as frustrated as we are)
MakeCode is an AMAZING low-barrier entry to programming. Introducing people, especially youth, to writing code is not an easy task.
It might not seem like much when you're in the day-to-day trenches, but sparking that inspiration and light changes lives.
You could probably make it work with one motor, if the wings join, and the pager motor is pushing/pulling on the join.
but the wings need to move out and then in, so woulnd't I need two motors? one for each side?
You can probably start making it without the electronics, to get the motion working by hand.
I thought i could just attach the wing to the edge of the motor?
โฑ ๐ฎ @haughty quiver's MakeCode minute was 2min 05sec of DVD-logo wall bouncing goodness! ๐ฎ โฑ
@eager cobalt It could work like this:
https://youtu.be/-j8uhnf9MCo?t=304
this is demonstration to show wing flapping machanisms to make ornithopter by rubberband or by using moter......... follow me on fb:::https://m.facebook.com/...
oh perfect!
how to do I that? I don;t need the trinket and the servo? I got all these items
So I don't need the pager motor? looks like he's using the hobby motor
I'd get that working, maybe without the trinket. But then, once that's working, I'd try with a servo and trinket. That part's a lot of fun, since you can make the butterfly look more organic by varying the speed of the wing flaps in a nuanced way, like a real butterfly.
Yes I need to make this for tomorrow
I love how Microsoft owns @open girder now ๐
Well, that's news to me -- "Microsoft owns Adafruit". Eh? ๐
Well, then, maybe just motor, battery, and switch for now!
@slow spire how do you use the servo and trinket?
Grats on the sale! ๐
And by the transitive property, don't they own RadioShack?
@waxen thistle it wasn't on Facebook, which means its not true... ๐
@pearl shoal nice that Adafruit now owns Microsoft
I use a mac the adafruit site showed windows
I'd start here, @eager cobalt for servos:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-arduino-lesson-14-servo-motors
Well, does Adafruit provide free coffee and drinks? They both are open-source leaders today. They're more alike than different ๐
I use a Mac also.
Yes, Adafruit has free drinks
Arduino works great on Mac.
@pearl shoal AdaShack
MicroAdaShack
@viral sail MicroAdaShack
Thank you @slow spire what is the role of the trinket?
I got the usb cable for it, i dont understand what software i need
@open girder we're picking them up just fine without the extra mic... well, I am.
The trinket is a tiny computer; you can tell it how fast you want the wings to flap on your butterfly, and have it change over time.
With just the battery and no Trinket, your butterfly runs at one speed.
With the Trinket, you can tell it to change over time.
As a former blue-badger from 2008-ish "Old Microsoft" era, nothing makes me more happy than to see Microsoft embrace open-source and become a leader in that area.
@slow spire great! is there a tutorial for this please? need help desperately
Or even change when the light changes nearby, using a light sensor.
trinket also works with arduino...
Is arduino the program? what do I need to download?
The tutorial you shared for the servo shows all these parts that I do not have
You'll have to adapt to the parts you do have.
if you want to change the trinkets behavior... you can use arduino programing tools to.... the learn section at adafruit has examples.
Have you programmed with Arduino before, @eager cobalt ?
@slow spire no i haven't touched any of these items in my life before which is why i need desperate help
i only have welding experience
And the project is due tomorrow?
start reading here https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-trinket
I would get started without the Trinket or Arduino. Then I'd come back after tomorrow and begin the Arduino programming journey.
@slow spire ok
@eager cobalt which exact Trinket do you have on hand?
IR = Infrared
I honestly have no clue what I'm doing
Ir = To go, infinitive. [Spanish]
@eager cobalt Is this for a class, a client, or ?
@slow spire client
@eager cobalt - Wednesday night probably isn't the best time to ask for help - we're watching & playing along with the weekly live show. But you should post this in the #help-with-projects topic and I'm sure folks will be happy to help
Does the client care if tomorrow's version includes a Trinket, or are they more interested in the look of the butterfly
all that's happening in the browser - that's pretty cool
And definitely watch the show with us! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyFhE568-9Q

You can also come here 24/7, or to forums.adafruit.com.
I can post elsewhere if this conversation is in the way
cloud compile.... ahhhh.. pass... not useful.
I had no idea of that
Well then, I guess I stand corrected - maybe someone from @open girder can better direct you.
You're welcome here, @eager cobalt just wanted to let you know why there were other conversations
https://forums.adafruit.com would be the best for this project, since you can start a thread that will live on for days.
#help-with-projects is the place
i'll be back in a while...
#help-with-projects is a chatroom, and mostly everyone there is a volunteer/fellow community maker like yourself ๐ [be aware that availability can be limited, depending on the time of day, etc]
For more structured support, I'd strongly suggest making a post on https://forums.adafruit.com/ -- that is seen by Adafruit support as well as the community.
And if you're working for a client, having someone with the creative skills for the build and someone with technical skills for electronics is best.

@strange mantle I posted the link
Mike has the scoops, it seems. so straight CPython?
Maybe someday CircuitPython but not the current implementation
Her comment about patenting it was lost (and might need to be revisited since it was a joke ๐ )
QUESTION I'm trying to mount a CPX to read/write UF2 using a CH376S USB host breakout. It mounts and immediately dismounts. Is there something missing in the UF2 pseudo-flash-drive implementation causing this? @open girder
PT nailed it. That "5 minute" experience. Exactly that.
Emailing UF2 files to AT users (or their care givers) is a huge improvement over asking them to install Arduino
don't mess with the rust people? lol what did I do?

Ok, we've done it folks. We've officially accomplished everything. Wow.
That is amazing
That's really neat.
Is the data in the Meta area of the PNG?
haha. the old meta data in the image trick! nice to see that still lives... (for a better reason than it used to)
we're through the looking glass at this point
Ahem, there are some New Products (including a 4H product!) - are we skipping that tonight?
Great question
Question: will we be able to do direct download to PyGamer in MakeCode Arcade over WebUSB, instead of drag-drop of .uf2? Seems there in the UI, but I haven't gotten it to work.
is there any webassembly in makecode?
Isn't it funny? So much of the direction of our lives depends on those "5 minute experiences" -- both good and bad.
@bitstar, there will be one that has a couple more features

Short 1/4-20" of those exact McMaster Carr inserts are my favorite too
Lots of choices on where to by 2020 - and you can cut them pretty easily with a hacksaw
These were a HUGE help - if you want another SKU I'd add them. These T-Nuts don't slip https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BKSNQC4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Tip - if you have a Weller, they are wider - you might need longer M3 screws for the clamp
I can find you M5 screws... ๐
M4 version
For those not familiar with McMaster Carr -- they're an industrial hardware supplier that has a history for being very consistent with an excellent print catalog. And they've transitioned to the internet gracefully, with one of the nicest parts websites I've ever seen.
You will pay for this quality -- sometimes just a little, sometimes considerably, but if you want quality....they're hard to beat.
Mine's not on Thingiverse yet - I will do it
I use to say my Google-Fu is strong... now it's just Amazon-Fu?
It's ok, we understand @lavish patrol
๐
You're showing the counter-weight version! Did you drop the spring?
On button-top screws you can add a washer (or two) to solve that
I mean, I get it -- if someone is price-sensitive, they're going to be very turned off by the premium of McMC. They'll hit up aliexpress, amazon, ebay (overseas). And you might strike gold -- getting the same exact thing (or super close) for pennies.
But good luck using them as a steady supplier. And when designing things with close tolerances, you'll have to reiterate the design to accommodate the variance in the parts.
Noe/Pedro -- do you have a metal bandsaw? You can get table mounts for handheld bandsaws from Milwaukee/Dewalt/etc
You might mention that the height is pretty much unimportant
It can be taller than needed
I have one for the Weller
Vertical soldering irons melt
eventually
And never ever leave your soldering on and unattended. I've been in places where if the iron was even plugged in, you had to stay with it or unplug it + wait for it cool before leaving.
๐ถ
Have a fire extinguisher within arms reach at all times, and an easy way to kill the power to the device/bench (plug strip button, etc).
And keep pets away. ๐
Could mount the iron at an angle, and set the base closer to an edge of the board, so the heat from the iron doesn't rise directly to the iron body..
/ instead of |
automatic soldering station too?
I'll have the files up on Thingiverse in 10 min
Maybe 5
Also, mention that our parts are completely compatible
You can use your cup w/mine, my pulley w/yours
You could add a gauge to set the stopper...
So that you can do the entire press in one go... Use a gauge/guide to set depth, set the stopper.
This is a companion piece to Noe & Pedro Ruiz' insert tool. It was done as a prototype ("Bake-Off Style") and it was worth keeping both.
https://learn.adafruit.com/heat-set-rig
Parts are compatible.
(And it looks like I WILL be able to be on S&T if you want... I'm headed home - flight delayed & we decided to wait till tomorrow)
I will be using lots of 20x20
That would make an AWESOME Layer-By-Layer... show how to subtract a part from the standard teeth
Either by projecting, offsetting, and push/pull
Or using the Combine (cut) tool
That Screwdriver TOTALLY is worth the money on this project
Print it in ATMakers Green and it will disappear in Chroma-Key
Which screwdriver?
The twisty screwdriver he just used.. I'll look for a link
I never thought I'd spend this much on a stupid screwdriver, and I didn't spend the charity's money on it... but I love it https://www.adafruit.com/product/3856
Ah, that thing! I actually have one of those! I was wondering if it was a Yankee screwdriver or one of those screwholding ones.
It's just that the design is all held together with screws
That's awesome... need some chamfers around the base on that motor holder & it won't snap.
Go Long!
Stick around for the After Show!
Thanks, @hard hollow and @rocky reef ๐

Correct, I meant to tag @hard hollow and it came up @fallow fractal in the list (I bet it happens a lot since Noe Ruiz works for them)

Well, my true username is "Noe"

@lethal lagoon has an AWESOME book
@lethal lagoon That tube/cable contraption is the same sort of deal that you find in endoscopes. Only difference is the outer tube is actually a steel spiral. It might be more flexible than what you have there. We call them "Coil pipes" but who knows if that's what they're actually called.
oh super cool! yes I will look up smooth technologies
@river peak awesome! i will look those up too!
thanks!
the steel cable is nice because it doesnt stretch and doesnt compress
They end up really tiny, too, and it's steel cable inside
Well, depends on the steel cable you have. Some of ours will end up stetching just a little bit... which means you have to go back and re-set the angles the head of the scope gets
ahh interesting! i will enjoy going down this rabbit hole!
For something like what you're doing, though, the amount of stretch shouldn't be any issue. You're not trying to get exact angles out of things that are measured in millimeters
Great S&T everyone!
That was fun!
Yay, thanks!
yep! just playing around, and not sure what i will stick on the other end of it yet, but hoping to get some interesting movement
Sophy, what was the name of the book "Wearable Tech?"
great job @ivory grove ! cool haiku projects!
Thanks
@lethal lagoon I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Sophy, you rock!
it's called Wearable Tech Projects
@ivory grove yay you made it on great project ๐
I made a small toy for our granddaughter that plays my and my wife's voice instead of notes.
Thanks @tame geyser
@lethal lagoon, there are rotating ones as well - I saw a 3D extruder that uses one to move the drive motor https://zesty.tech/products/the-nimble?variant=31732311297
Thanks @lethal lagoon
@lethal lagoon If you want an in-depth thing on how scopes work, let me know. There's a lot of really cool (And downright simple!) mechanisms that might be useful for you depending on what route you go
@lethal lagoon it has a square wire that you can clamp to a servo/motor & extract the rotation at the other end
