awesome show, thanks @hard hollow and @rocky reef

eager sapphire
#

Until tonight ;^)

waxen thistle
#

@haughty quiver Though, I'd hesitate personally with a LACK cabinet. A 3D printer generates heat, there is always a risk of fire, and the LACK is literally cardboard-filled particleboard.

On the other hand, you can dress it up nicely with neopixels, RPi streaming camera for remote monitoring, and smoke detection.

rocky reef
#

@waxen thistle @haughty quiver i see some people use ikea cabinets, they add acrylic walls

haughty quiver
#

Yeah, I think enclosing it is probably a good idea in a lot of ways, but also a bit of a pain for getting at all the parts.

rocky reef
#

also set the bed hotter? maybe 90c

shell mason
#

soon @haughty quiver have tempcamera with sensor to detect temp flux in workshop if it get away

haughty quiver
#

oh wow, that's quite hot compared to the 60c i'm using @calm nebula!

#

It actually finished the print, but shifted 2mm halfway though and had the sad Ultimaker is too cold error displayed

waxen thistle
#

The nice part about the LACK is it's just a table....you can design it so the upper portion just lifts off the base to access all the parts inside. And it's dirt cheap.

rocky reef
#

or 70? just to compensate the coldness

prime sentinel
#

I'd probably try enclosing it in some simple fashion (cardboard box), then adding a temperature sensor, fan, smoke detector, and alert beeper, maybe a heater (light bulb) and some Arduino code to make sure it didn't get too warm or too cold and alert if something went awry.

rocky reef
#

ah good idea @waxen thistle

#

@haughty quiver oh wow, didn't know the ultimaker could display that cold error

waxen thistle
#

@prime sentinel Solid idea -- there's about a half-dozen projects one can generate from such an enclosure. Smoke sensor, camera, fan, temperature, etc. Combine it with adafruit IO, etc.

#

Speaking of Does anyone know what sim cards work with FeatherFona in the UK?

heavy siren
#

If you want cellular, I'm assuming, you may want to look at Adafruits line of micros from Particle. They have an Electron that may fit the bill for you. I have thier Photon for my weather station and it works great.

#

wow a chip in a fundamental particle !

slow spire
#

@dusty salmon There's some discussion of using giffgaff with Fona here:

dusty salmon
#

I haven't understood what Particle is, one of the things my head says not today you don't when it comes up in adafruit videos

#

Thanks @slow spire

#

bookmarked

slow spire
#

What are you building @dusty salmon ? What kinds of messages and bandwidth do you need? Is LoRa an option? (It can be free.)

dusty salmon
#

I was trying to build my own phone for text messages and ideally phone calls that could also interact with i2c. Mostly born out of disliking the last 3 phones I had and wanting to see if I could make something to work how I like. I want to re program it instead of settings that don't fit my needs.

#

If I set a calender event I want the choice of actions to be only limited by my imagination or have an incoming call event trigger a servo just because that's how I feel that day

prime sentinel
#

That sounds all kinds of fun!

#

I've integrated the SIM808 module that powers one of the FONA boards into a product, it's interesting.

dusty salmon
#

I recently stayed in a smart house with remotes that had a 4 line high display, accelerator and wifi that could control lights, blinds, music (including searching Dizzer for songs and playlists) you could transfer music from one room to another. That was fun!

#

nice

slow spire
dusty salmon
#

I'll book mark that for tomorrow, thanks.

#

The remotes controlled TV's XBox One's and even the heating (but that part was dodgy)

#

The house had Alexa Show (Alexa with 7 or 8 inch screens built in)

#

All I could think was Adafruit makes everything in the remote and many things the house used

prime sentinel
#

They're sunsetting 2G in most of the UK, so you may be stuck going with a more modern chip (Telit and ublox make some good modules).

dusty salmon
#

Most of the time my phone only works on 2g internet so I hope not too soon. 3g tries but never works

prime sentinel
#

Ah, that's handy, there are a lot more 2G modules out there, and they're cheaper than the LTE versions.

dusty salmon
#

my contract is still a year on it

prime sentinel
dusty salmon
#

That looks super useful, my current phone contract should be 4g despite it's performance.

#

bookmarked for the morning.

prime sentinel
dusty salmon
#

did you steal that?

#

it says stolen

prime sentinel
#

Heh, it receives notification via SMS over the cellular modem (as well as some geofencing type processing) and marks itself as "stolen". We later changed the wording to "lost".

#

We also later changed the cellular modem to a FONA 808 ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

dusty salmon
#

So looking at the pin out it's UART and powered by 5v, would I need to give it 5v and 3.3v I normally only use adafruit and rasberry pi based stuff

#

that's built to stack on a fixed format, this mikroBUS is brand new to me

#

do adafruit have a feather wing to RPi adapter hat to put feather wings on a Pi?

dusty salmon
#

ooohh, the flip and click sam3x acts as both an Arduino form factor and 4 socket mikroBUS and runs Arduino and Python. bu it is $49

prime sentinel
#

As you can see, I didn't have any Mikrobus hardware, I just plugged it into a breadboard and wired up the signals I needed.

#

If you want a soldered down instead of breadboarded implementation, you could get a Proto Hat and solder up something workable.

Hello guys

waxen thistle
#

We need a gameshow like the old Nick Arcade, but with MakeCode Arcade.

dense marlin
#

@waxen thistle Yes totally.

#

Just today introduced some kids to MakeCode Arcade.

cinder wind

Amazing what one can do with MakeCode now. So neat

waxen thistle

No fender benders here with that collision detection.

Has anyone a good knowledge about firewalls? I want to build it on my own, but I have only an Very old pc with an celeron D. It means I canโ€™t use any 64 bit OS.

What I need to know is what distribution I should use. I want to cut out all advertisements from YT on my iPad (itโ€™s really annoying to watch an ad Before i can watch a video) and to protect me from malicious websites if โ€œBrain.exeโ€ doesnโ€™t work correctly

I made something like this when i was 10-11 years old. Used 2 dc motors connected by a string turning on and off the light in my room. No microcontroller back then!

I love when a practical need easily justifies a multi-disciplinary project

dense marlin

@haughty quiver did you get a Sirin: Analog Messenger Of Joy?

odd stream
#

@haughty quiver Cool project.

haughty quiver
#

@dense marlin no, but they sure sound nice, I played around with the Sirin at the Moog House of Electronicus that was here briefly.

#

and a Moog One!

#

I bought an Analog Messenger of Joy t-shirt, which was more within my budget :)

dense marlin
#

Cool. Hope to get my hands at superbooth on this Moogs

haughty quiver
#

I've been borrowing the DFAM from a friend and I love it.

dense marlin
#

Thy are out of my budget too

haughty quiver
#

Which is why I have a Werkstatt !

#

Usually run $200 new, but they've been discontinued.

dense marlin
#

This is great for makers, isnโ€™t it?

haughty quiver
#

Yes, it's very maker friendly.

#

I have created arpeggiators for it with a Trinket M0, it's very easy to hook into it.

#

Moog did a nice series of tutorials on hacking it.

dense marlin
#

Yes, saw them. But I donโ€™t have one jet.

haughty quiver
dense marlin
#

So back to the project today. This is not working with the M0 Bluefruit right? Iโ€™m still confused with the difference of these boards.

haughty quiver
#

The nRF52840 has so much more speed and space that it's the best choice for BLE on a Feather in CircuitPython.

dense marlin
#

And the M0 Bluefruit is better for Arduino than.

haughty quiver
#

Either is good to use with Arduino.

#

I think you'll run out of room quickly if you try to do much more on the M0.

#

I don't think you could necessarily load all the libraries needed for today's project on the M0.

dense marlin
#

Okay.

cinder wind
#

Also on the M0 Bluefruit feather, the BLE function is on a separate chip, so I don't think you can use the BLE functions of CircuitPython, even if you had the space. (In the Arduino realm, you talk to the BLE part of the M0 Bluefruit as if it were a serial device)

#

It is confusing though, because there are so many different ways to do things

haughty quiver
#

Yes -- if you look at the code in the Munny project it is much more of a brute force hack that Limor created to get it working

#

it's BluefruitSPI

cinder wind
#

clean code, there Mr JP

dense marlin
#

Okay, but I only have the M0 Bluefruit Feather.

haughty quiver
#

Oh, right, yes.

#

you could see if combining that and the Munny code is possible.

#

thanks Seรฑor Bot. It's just me paring down @paper peak 's excellent clean code :)

dense marlin
#

There is a guide for a four button HID with a feather. I canโ€™t find it now. But I what this sending the signal via Bluetooth to a Mac to control volume etc.

#

โ€ฆ not via the USB cable

haughty quiver
#

Cool!

dense marlin
#

No, didnโ€™t see this.

haughty quiver
dense marlin
#

Ah, okay.

cinder wind
#

yeah that joystick is just 5 buttons ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

dense marlin
#

Than I maybe need another Feather Board.

haughty quiver
#

Totally. It's how I type now @cinder wind

#

@dense marlin I think you could build it with the M0 Bluefruit feather.

dense marlin
#

But then in Arduino not in python?

haughty quiver
#

Yes.

dense marlin
#

Ah, okay.

haughty quiver
#

The HID key entry project. Base it on that joystick project.

dense marlin
#

I will try this. Thanks.

#

That helped a lot. There is so much out, itโ€™s sometimes hard to find the right things.

haughty quiver
#

I know! Happy to help.

dense marlin
#

So, as always, itโ€™s late here in germany. Gute Nacht everyone.

#

And thanks to @haughty quiver and all the other great people here.
