any cool meshtastic projects?
thanks folks!
thanks folks
The official Meshtastic Discord server has a few forum channels where people share their DIY projects. The invite link is on Meshtastic's homepage.
FYI JP is running Show and Tell and no AAE tonight.

hello
Good evening everyone.
whats live right now?
Hey Y'll
i have a 32x32 matrix that i cant install wled can you link a guide for it @blissful apex ?
I'll be publishing it within the next couple weeks!
What were you using for the microcontroller? I thought I read somewhere that the S3 isn't supported by WLED.
I'm using the Matrix Portal ESP32 S3 .. which isn't supported by the standard WLED install, but there's a MoonModule that supports it and also includes the additional Animartrix effects
I'll put it all in the guide!
ahahahaha "tell me, oh wizened computer guy, what was it like to use computers with these 'floppy disks' that became the save icon?"
@blissful apex did you use a installer or web page to get the matrix portal s3 working with wled?
I used the Adafruit WebSerial ESPTool. Here's the forum thread I found that explained what to do: https://github.com/MoonModules/WLED-MM/issues/205
i love this doll head project
Thanks! Looks better at night in a room with not a lot of light on.
i bet
Thanks everyone for sharing.
Thank you to all who shared
thanks all, great stuff!
Thanks for hosting, John!
^^
@blissful apex did you use "WLEDMM_14.5.0-beta_adafruit_matrixportal_esp32s3.bin" and flashed it onto yours with adafruit webSerial ESPTool and it just works?
I've never used a laser cutter, but it's something I've wanted to figure out. @blissful apex, any recommendations on what to look for? Looks like the prices vary wildly.
Morning/afternoon/evening all.
hello!
👋
hihi
Good afternoon.
Hi to JP and the group
It's fun time JohnPark is going to teach us more things we can play with
Hi to JP & all, and Greetings from Nevada!
I'm not getting anything on youtube
Blame Lars...
🎉
@haughty quiver YouTube is now up
👋
you are there Im so glad
It's only just started here, @haughty quiver
Heyyy 👋
It's DST lite...
Looking good so far
One of them looks like Lars...
Hey JP sorry about missing your show. Playing around with FreeCAD
I have sound
Sound's fine here. 👍
I have sound back after restarting my Xbox
it's going sideways
Sounds like PAL
No that's 625 lines and 25 frames for PAL
Honestly don't miss the days of component/composite/s-video
Is the image on the Sony tilted, or is it just me?
I'm at that age now where I'm dithering all the time. 😄
Not seeing code if intended @haughty quiver
Maybe the format is wrong: grayscale or something instead of monchrome 🤔
The default dither in FFMPEG is pretty bad.
okay I just arrived before JP's show start, hope I didn't miss anything. wait what it's not 1pm?
just re-do everything you just said, but 10x speed
Thanks JP
Thanks, JP.
Thanks JP!
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone.
@cinder wind Many of us missed the first nine minutes. 😄
Thanks, JP! Good afternoon/evening, everyone!
Bye all 👋
thank you everyone!
Good afternoon, everybody!
👋
👋
self signing certs and local https has been a nightmare for me in the past
it used to be not easy, but these days less so. mkcert makes it pretty easy with an install option that brings up system level trust dialog. Otherwise manually with openssl, or even letsencrypt in various ways. Equally, try ngrok for zero effort port forwarding + ssl iirc.
that's true, can't just be ips, not worth using letsencrypt for this.
you can set a subdomain to a local ip, and verify the full wildcard domain using dns verification for letsencrpyt
Can you use example.org possibly? It's a special reserved URL
Thanks, Tim! Good evening/night, all!
Thanks Tim, have a great weekend all.
See ya. Thanks. 👍
🇸🇪 👋
I am getting started for the morning working on a talking translator on the Raspberry Pi. You can follow along on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqp6xo92Jyc or twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Better make sure there's more than one split element
just thinking: If you don't reverse then you would be able to replay a static number to bring back a particular message (don't know if that's valuable)
Can someone tell me how I can watch Tim's Saturday stream? He said he. would put itin the link but I can not find it. Thank you
The links for YT and twitch are a few messages up in this channel. Here is the YT link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqp6xo92Jyc
Thhank you!
Thanks Tim!

Hey Y'll
Good evening.
Thanks for sharing everyone.
Thank you all who shared
Nice!
Any idea if and when Ask An Engineer will be on this evening. Is there any way to get notified when it is announced - where can I sign up? I really do not want have to sit here and wait to see if anything shows up?
Sorry - things are a bit up in the air at the moment. For the past (forever) years we've done them like clockwork, but as Limor is expecting baby number 2 soon, they are doing the shows when they can. Hope you can understand. Suscribe to the youtube, and you'll see stuff there too when it's posted.
I thought I subscribed. At one point it said that I was subscribed but I never seem to get notified. Where would the notification appear? I just selected ALL. It says I am Subscribed again.
Not sure - might try the old "turn it off and on again" - 🙂 that's a youtube thing.
I killed it on my phone and restarted. I see all my listed subscriptions. I am missing how I will be contacted?
Text, email or just have to watch All or Today? On Today, Show and Tell is listed, but no Ask An Engineer - just check back later?
You might try going to twitch notifications too, I find them more reliable, but both platforms are often a bit late with those. https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
Thanks. I am still missing whether I will get an explicit notification message, text or do I have to keep checking back to the sight?
I think subscribing and enabling the notification bell will cause you to get a notification on your phone

Question: For the smooth plate did you need a spray or adhesive?
I always use smooth PEI build plate and never use anything other than to really clean the plate with IPA (isopropyl not the pale ale)
raspberry pi compute module with io board might work to make it slimmer design
Using IPA (the ale) will make it so you won't care about the surface finish

Greetings, everybody 👋
maybe browser developer tools would show you a request to the verify endpoint with a bearer token (network tools panel, filter by fetch/XHR)
Might be worth using the adafruit image converter service to downscale / format shift: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_PyPortal/blob/611c04f0e5a44b984c09c145168c4f38cbfe2be1/adafruit_pyportal/network.py#L40
👋
Happy Halloween, Tim and all!
Sorry to come in late, but what sort of viewer is under construction?
So we're trying to get the FruitJam to pull images using the pixelfed API?
Ah, so something between an API and web scraping? (Or web fetch?)
oh clever, you can presumably ask for BMP8 etc
can you still do a "some string %s thing".format(percent_s_arg) or am I mixing languages again 😂
Got you, wise call to keep it separate, at least initially. That new string talk is a good shout too
didn't set root_group?
try BMP24?
Oh really? Wondered what the diff was apart from the fromDisk bit
Ah yeah, much slower displaying the onDiskBitmap

Nice one Tim, thanks! Have a good weekend all 👋
Thanks for the stream, Tim! Enjoy the weekend!

Nervously excited to have pushed a new commit for the CircuitPython WASM port towards the start of the stream. It's at the point where it really needs outside eyes to continue shaping it into a port worthy the name CircuitPython, but it's cool to see it running in the web-editor, executing code without a board/real hardware. What's the usual process for adding a new port?
Howdy all.
Yeah, it'd be more akin to the Unix port, which I don't think appears on the .org site either. Thanks for the information!
Oh, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Yes, that's exactly the idea - rapid prototype/test/trial. The goal is for code.py to be portable and run just as well as on real hardware
If the Matrix screensaver goes away and comes back, is that the Matrix Reloaded?
Is there a version of fruit jam os with the screen saver update on your github?

Hey Tim, Bitmaptools seems really powerful. Only used it for basic stuff so far. Happy to see this today
Calculate from 2003 FiftyCent is now about SeventyEight cent
I've used FFMpeg in the past, didn't think to use PIL
Try setting the palette so the colors are not evenly spaced, heavily loaded to the FFFFFF side for example
On a 4-color display do the hex values map linearly to the 4 colors of the display? #999999 = Black?
Sorry yes should be white.
I missed your description of the display, are the 4 colors just greys, if so, there may not be any effective difference between using four colors and dithering evenly across two
You could try filling 4 solid regions under the picture to see output maybe?
To test you are getting 4 different shades
🙌
👋
Luminance values just B&W value of each pixel? (0-255)?
It looks like the boolean is comparing the luminance(?) to decide whether to apply the dithering...?
Wikipedia has great examples https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dither
Dither is an intentionally applied form of noise used to randomize quantization error, preventing large-scale patterns such as color banding in images. Dither is routinely used in processing of both digital audio and video data, and is often one of the last stages of mastering audio to a CD.
A common use of dither is converting a grayscale image...
Thanks Tim

Hi, since I already posted this to the Ask An Engineer chat, this is kind of a cross posting, sorry for that... But maybe this is also a good topic in this session? I don't know, I'm new here...
My son and I recently 3d printed a baloon powered hovercraft we found on thingiverse ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3096043). It worked quite well, but we thought we could improve it, by redoing it in tinkercad with a thinner body to save weight and 4 smaller holes on the sides of the bottom instead of one in the middle. We also tried to attach a skirt on the sides, but that didn't work at all and despite all our experiments, the original still worked best by far. I found that I was not able to explain the dependencies of weight, airflow, surface and all that, so I thought it might make sense to ask an engineer, if and why that model is already prime engineering or how it could be improved 🙂
A small hovercraft powered by a balloon, the air inside the balloon will provide an air cushion below the hovercraft and thrust out of the nozzle on the back.it can be a little difficult to attach the balloon, is recommended to attach a ballon with a short neck, this to help to keep the balloon upright.
lol Two Dudes Talking guy, how's your interactivity NOW?
awesome! may we post it on our blog for 3DThursday?
This is not my design, I just printed it and tried to improve it (failed) 🙂
oh interesting. I avoided the desktop version just because it loads so slowly when doing headless projects I like to avoid it

Thanks everyone.
Thanks all for sharing. Great projects as always
Thank you to all who shared
great projects tonight, thanks folks!
Looking forward to the unboxing.
Hi Tim and all present
👋
I placed an order today, and stupid enough I forgot the discount code.
Whaat, WASM port? You've been busy @old surge , is there a playground note or anything? This presumably enables running circuitpython in the browser, a bit like pyodide?
The WASM port uses Emscripten (EMSDK) to compile, but the web-editor's wasm branch has the latest build included already
so the web editor includes the wasm port, if built from the wasm branch, no nothing else needed?
The web-editor wasm branch should be good to go (it includes the .wasm and .mjs files that would be output from the circuitpython wasm branch's build)
After you've cloned the web-editor wasm branch, run npm install from the top level
what was the question for the viewers? only half listened sorry
It's not a while True loop there - it just runs a fixed number of times
hypothetically connect a usb-to-gpio and use web-serial over the browser circuitpython for real pins, like blinka but through wasm host and web-serial expanders, aka blinka-webserial-wasm
Long term development goal, that
Webserial mostly for the mcp2221A and FTH232 usb to gpios.
I'd also love to see a virtual display type thing, like a built in board framebuffer the web editor could use, so users could prototype display code too
The page may be sending keypresses to a different element
the lines go blue background, not just the selected text, when it works
That's odd about the serial/REPL text - it's an xterm.js instance that looks like it hasn't resized properly
while True remains one of the biggest challenges because it does want to block the browser's own loop, as you just saw. Programmatic pin toggling should be fine - trying input like a button may be too much
My computer crashed a bit harder and closed OBS an everything. Stream gone.
I will wrap now. By the time I would get OBS and the browsers back up with everything there will only be a few minutes left before the end of the stream anyhow.
I'll be back at my usual time tomorrow morning (10am central) for the next stream.
Thank you @old surge for working on this. I think it is super cool! I'll stick to for loops and maybe play with adding delays when I get back to it.
Thank you Tim!
It's super cool John-no, thanks for sharing this, and thanks Tim for going through it. Can't wait to have a play!
It may have been the while True, but it could as easily have been because not all interfaces have implementations. My testing focused on digitalio as a first step. I'm sorry you couldn't play around with the REPL, given the view was funky. Font size settings are another potential culprit, which could be changed in the web-editor files if changing browser settings didn't correct it.
I believe I have a non-standard (bigger than default) font size set in the browser. I'll tinker with changing it and see how the REPL looks. I've noticed it mess with other pages on occasion too.
I wonder if the proper page has a similar issue if you connected a board, then, or if it's something particular to my fork/branch
…, is there a playground note or anything?
https://github.com/johnnohj/circuitpython/tree/wasm/ports/wasm#readme and the other markdown files within that folder seem describe it quite extensively. It's noticeably better than a lot of other FOSS projects that share the "Status: Experimental" claim, at least at a first glance.
I've bunged the WASM version on here for now, so I can play, feel free to play there too:
https://tyeth.github.io/circuitpython-web-editor/
I've mostly adjusted the urls to be relative, and removed the cname from the deploy script if a fork. Same WASM branch
Oh, that's very cool! Much easier for folks to try it out that way
Got a weirdness. Can't press tab on board. and see its members, (after importing in repl), but if i do print(board. then tab it will show members, like it works only as a function argument or not the first or something
ah yeah, a1=board. then tab, works. so it's just not working if first and only thing in the repl
if I restart button I get d1 in use running a basic test, but refreshing sorts it (and the code is still saved - nice one)
I think I might have just been tired earlier, and missing the trailing dot when pressing tab, although fairly sure I tried that, it's definitely working now
Thank you, @smoky island for giving this a shot! I'm sorry to have cut the stream short for everyone. This port project has been a learning experience, and any advice or insights to bringing a proper CircuitPython board to the browser are heartily welcomed.
Some cache/code state must be getting preserved despite the restart button, then. Glad the tab refresh gets it going again
Yeah it's curious, thinking I was onto a clever one (knowing there are two code paths for Save+Run, depending on file location being /code.py)...I tried using that instead of /home/code.py (default save of new file), but same. Then tried microcontroller.reset which is different from Restart button (uses supervisor.reload), but that broke the world 😂
It's very easy to break the world with this thing spanning four programming languages and goodness knows how many contexts (vm within a vm within a...). I'm not convinced the current architecture is the best one, but it is functional within narrow constraints 😅
That's enough to spark interest and explore the idea further, it's a fantastic start!
I'd love to see an integration with makecode somehow for simulation, but could also see potential use in AdafruitIO or a local/home web server running a CircuitPython 'board'. Lots of cool possibilities for prototyping and for IoT fun
I'm a little behind this morning, but getting started now. You can follow along on twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVVVZIOlORc

Thanks for the stream. The discussion of index versus color converter is interesting. Appreciate the reminder that Python variable names are pointers to objects, not the objects themselves (the value). It trips me up occasionally.

cool composition
Plus no need for power once you update the epaper display. Just shut everything down until the next update. Eink is so cool
the tri-color looks pretty good at doing a gradient.
Oh yeah the gradient dithers look rad
Will the display where out?
Sorry if I missed it - is there a link to the display being used in the live stream as well?
Once again, a blessed Thanksgiving. PS did Lady Ada have the new baby?
Thank you 🙏🏿
So long, and thanks for all the facts.
Thanks!
thank you all!
Thanks, JP! Enjoy the holiday, everyone, if you partake!
Is there a multiplexer for these 24-pin displays?
I don't know of a multiplexer @fathom gulch but it's SPI so should be possible to control multiple displays from a single board. Here's a thread discussing it https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?t=151722
Thanks @haughty quiver, Clarity at last. Seems I'm stuck in I2C land (I'll have to work on that!)

Hey Y'll
🇸🇪 👋
the web page mentions "Also include 1 x SWD 0.05" Pitch Connector - 10 Pin SMT Box Header ($1.50)"
will you be showing any SWD today ?
so tiny so feather
no worry - I was just curious abou the SWD - thanks for explaining the connection on the bottom of the board!
Stuck working from home… can’t give a full focus.. does this board have a good deep sleep in Arduino ? #QUESTION
Thank you for taking time for us
thank you for taking the time!
I believe it has the same deep sleep as other STM32 boards, e.g. in STM32duino it uses the https://github.com/stm32duino/STM32LowPower library
appreciate it!!! i was in a rush to find a good answer before the sale went away… i’m much more an ESP32 (variant) kinda guy / experience

Hey Y'll
Good evening everyone.
👋
👋
Neat to see Zephyr being used!
Are you seeing the video vertical in YouTube too?
looks normal to me
They should label them vertical and horizontal or something so you know which one you're getting.

oh crazy. now I have two S&T streams going: one normal, one vertical
Guess I should get a new monitor since all of mine have that DVI-D connector 🙂

HEY JP . Happy after Thanksgiving
hello!

I think Lars chewed through the cable again...
See you Twitch not Youtube @haughty quiver
I can see him
Hey it’s a JP!
👍
I think JP's got his own mission control back there...
Houston, we have a problem...
A hall of monitors... sort of like a hall of mirrors, but with LCDs...
Only enboxing today no unboxing
🇸🇪 👋
Good evening, Mr. Bergdahl.
Evening mr. Callaway!
A 'new' CRT
OMG A CRT!
Lol
(should we tell him it's sideways?)
Vertical video, old style.
ahah the sideways had a purpose!
Very cool!
Can't spell C.R.T. without "JP"
"Nice dissolve"
Will you be able to use the lights to communicate from the upside-down?
“Not a cooking show. Let’s popover…”
Screw terminals - a gift to tinkerers everywhere
Storage is easy too
Beat me to it!
Audio's fine here. 👍
Lol
we can't see the LEDs, @haughty quiver
ooo pretty
wow your password is "hunter2" just like mine
Bee Gees are?
I'd like lights that are Notorious BRG
Try CMY and confuse it completely... 😄
Do you stock Pantone LEDs?
Lol
You will need to turn off i2s pin 32 to unused to get IR to work
Tick "Audio Reactive" enabled?
WLED is great but omg centering everything in the UI is horrendous
so many options...
changes to i2s settings require hardware reset
That's why - it's written for use on mobile as well
If in doubt reboot
if in douth starred
Great workshop, JP. 👍
Thanks JP
Great job JP like the Wled
Bye, all. 👋

Don't forgrt the TI-99
I knew JP was really doomguy
I'm reliving the 8-bit glory that I missed out on as a kid!
who the hecks voice is that
I love the Tissue paper
Carefully undo tape so you can re-use re-gift the beautiful paper stuffing
yes! works great as gift paper
OOPS, hope the screws are not unique
I never knew I could get excited about packing paper… but then came the adabox
jam sandwich
If you're going to be holding the fruitjam while running it, I've found it helpful to put a piece of electrical/kapton tape across the back of the gpio pins solder points.
Good thing I'm retired. My productivity is about to bottom out
DOOMGUY.EXE is back!
Every wall tile WILL get a bullet!
I can't believe a little credit-card-sized microcontroller can play Doom
I AM VERY EXCITED to see the Adabox unveiling. Hi JP and everyone
That video wall would give most corporate conference exhibition booths a run for their money
but can I play Doom with the IR remote?
Hmmmm... lots of tearing on the Official Raspberry Pi HDMI monitor.
Sounds good though
Just tried the Mac emulator. It boots but mouse and kbd not recognized.
