Sorry, but that looks like a raspi pig.(the title image not the board)
Thanks, JP! (Mic audio cut occasionally today - is that jack plugged in all the way?)
thanks all
Of course Lars was at the Coldplay concert.
ack! sorry, not sure why, i'll look into it
No worries - just didn't want it to wind up being an issue on Thursday!

Hey Y'll
I am excited for these juggling balls. The design is looking great JP! π€Ή

Yes, rogue! I would play rogue when I needed a break from working on problem sets in grad school
Thank you to all who shared.
thanks folks
Thanks everyone, have a great night.
Bleep, Bloop. Hello, World!
Is there an Ask An Engineer tonight?
We think so. But not sure of when the start time is.
Thanks. WIll it posted someplace or just pop up here?
Ideally one of us will post a link to it here. I'll keep an eye on it, but others are welcome to beat me to it.
we are waiting for the fun
Guess I'll catch the recording later. Bed time.
Night.
Well folks. I'm not sure if there is a show tonight or not. I'll be back in a while to check on this - but if not, I'll see you all next week!
I hope all is well. Good night

Hi
Is this the live bro-AdCast-chat?
so your saying there was no ask an engineer or show and tell yesterday? @haughty quiver
Oil pens are slick
If this soda bottle manufacturing is interesting to you (as it is to me), I found this video fascinating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU_gH36GG58
Bill explains how the two-liter plastic soda bottle begins as a plastic tube, called a preform, which is heated and inflated with air in a bottle-shaped mold. He explains how the stretching of the preform creates a crystalline regions in the bottle's plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) that create a bottle with great strength, low permeability ...

Hello, all. π
If an accelorometer is contantly rotating how will you know which direction the force is pointing?
Will you not need a gyro?
250 bytes of data encapsulated in an "information element" of a standard wifi management Action frame
For like 5 years I've been trying to get JP to make a "screams when falling" project that uses that free-fall detection to play a scream WAV. Finally with these juggling balls maybe.
I'm thinking Lars would like to be involved in that...
hehe
one not simply notify power glove with ball on hand
Is someone playing Pong?
Lol
Also, nice juggling!
very cool JP!
I imagine having a way to maintain internal balance might be important
You could have the balls send battery present over to the resiver and display it on a tft @haughty quiver
what would you do to make them impact resistant ? Which material did you choose for the shell ? Especially to protect the electronics and lipo from shocks
Thanks, JP π
Thanks, JP, had a ball! Have a nice weekend, everyone!
Thanks JP! Totally spherical, dude.
thanks JP, good show
Thanks JP
Bye all. π
The Desk of Ladyada β FruitJam Tester + Neopot Prototype πππ¦
https://youtu.be/0bzMJeyvvLA
Last week, we conducted a Great Search for a clear shaft linear potentiometer. This week, the prototypes arrivedβand they work great! We're also beginning work on the FruitJam Tester. We'll be showing the finalized silkscreen, the cover plate we designed, and the expected form factor of the tester itself. Additionally, we wrapped up a library for a QMC5883 breakout. This chip serves as a drop-in replacement for the now-discontinued HMC5883. It's frequently found in quadcopter builds, so we thought it would be a great candidate for a simple magnetometer breakout.
New potentiometer and QMC5883 prototypes tested. FruitJam Tester design previewed. Exploring high-speed USB isolator options.
evening folks! Hi @open girder
yay! hi hi @robust horizon !
Since the FruitJamβ’οΈ has a C6 for WiFi, it would be cool if it could somehow connect to Adafruit IO and have two players remotely in different locations
there are a few options for connectivity. we've got a fun irc setup to show off, plus some other projects. you'll be able to do a lot.
thanks @open girder for the fruitjam update!

Been a while for me! Good product to come back on!
Bummer I just bought this the other day. Oh well
Is this the live-bellcast-chat channel? ποΈ
I feel your pain. I've done the same with several much pricier products. But it doesn't compare to the great savings when I catch a good product pick. Like this one, IMO. (I feel far worse when I miss out on the fantastic buys because I place my order late or missed the livestream completely.)
OG magtag!
cowbell magtag
CircuitPython wasn't even fully supported on the MagTag when I got it. π
Oh, microcontrollers can output screensavers the classroom computers ran when I was in elementary school. That's a fun age to get to...

Good evening everyone.

If only it weren't dead.... π
@bold roost What's wrong with it?
How do you bend a PC board?
I haven't figured it out yet, actually. I've gotten dead test to run, but diagnostics won't boot. I recently picked up a testing harness to suss it out. I think the clock is good, but I don't actually have an oscilloscope fast enough to properly measure it.
Thanks for sharing everyone.

Hello. I am new in the programming world. I have just started learning Python but before I have been learning MakeCode and Scratch. I have base but not so fully because of my teachers at school. Do you have some tips what to do, learn? I am having classes about Python with group. We have just finished algorithms and some things that we use in Python such as int, if else... Please someone help me I want to be persuade a career in programming.
Welcome aboard, @ornate magnet.
I like https://realpython.com/
I find W3Schools useful: https://www.w3schools.com/python/default.asp
we are not see your work on line
Breaking up
audio is out of sync
Lol. Audio out of sync...
Audio sync on YouTube is okay
I blame Lars.
On YouTube the audio has been cutting out for me
reloaded, is fine now
I'm watching on YouTube. It's watchable nonetheless. π
Refresh helped π
Refresh also working for me
Yep, @open surge, @tulip canyon. @main flame π
Thank you all! What do you think about skipping Java, JavaScript and then learn C languages?
breaker breaker 19, what's your 20, come back
@ornate magnet It depends on what you want to do going forward.
I want to work in AI.
@ornate magnet A bit out of my skill set, I'm afraid. Probably C.
Thank you.
If you're interested in AI, start with Python
Will ESP-now run on the Fruit Jam WiFi coprocessor?
I've only written basic scripts in Python - copying files and such.
As I said, beyond my skill set.
I was just on the FAQ
https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-faq/en/latest/application-solution/esp-now.html
The chip is capable of it, but I think it will depend whether Nina-FW and esp32spi libraries have support for espnow to work in CircuitPython on the Fruit Jam.
Lol. "Wrapped around the axle". I like that expression - never heard it before. π
Yup, coming Monday the 4th
Another great Workshop, JP. π
Thank JP. Love using ESP-NOW
Thanks JP
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone.
thanks JP, good show
Thank for inviting us into your workshop, JP!
Bye all. π
Thanks JP, cool stuff as always
good show π
thanks very much for hanging out w me!
Thanks JP π
watching delayed, a couple of notes... ESP32-C6 as wifi co-processor doesn't support ESP-NOW in the NINA firmware (only native wifi) --> oh, n/m, foamyguy answered later
wifi.radio.start_ap with max_connections=0 won't allow any connections (there are use cases for that) ...other than 0, range is 1-10
I see, thanks
if you really want to go down a rabbit hole... the maximum number of connections to an espressif AP trades off with the maximum number of encrypted ESP-NOW peers, but it's a compile-time thing currently https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf/issues/11697
π
Good evening Tim π
Hi, so there were a lot of Metro and early Fruit Jam revision guides. Are those still working for the customer revision? Will you review them?
Can we consider the Pico2 + HSTX bonnet a kind of FruitJam mini?
Pico2W does WiFi.
https://www.adafruit.com/product/6243 instead of the Pico 2 in that setup would be more alike due to PSRAM and larger flash.
'has an built-in...' -> 'has a built-in...'
Dinner bell is ringing, I'll have to catch the rest on VOD π
I hope it is a diner cowbell.
No need to unplug the keyboard... you have two USB ports !?
It would still be good to document the pinout for people porting to other platforms, such as Zephyr.
Thanks for the stream, Tim! Always a pleasure to hang out
Usually Adafruit product are open hardware and the schematic is available in the last pages of the primary learn guide.
Here are all the learn guide for FruitJam: https://learn.adafruit.com/products/6200/guides
The primary guide is missing as foamyguy still work on it.
I think the suggestion was to look at the firmware code, and maybe this file will tell you everything about the GPIO mapping, as seen from within CircuitPython
πΈπͺ π
I'm getting started for the morning stream working on some Fruit Jam OS stuff. You can follow along on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_HSKvHdlfY and twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Seems I have been out of the loop too long, just realized I have no idea what Fruit Jam OS is. π¬
π β
Good morning. My Fruit Jam should be here Monday, little excited
@smoky island Thanks for the morning stream, unfortunately I couldn't catch it in real time π’ . With respect to the issues you had with copying files to the CIRCUITPY flash, I have taken to having a linux terminal window open and after any copy to/from CircuitPython mounts run a "sync" command. I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to be necessary, but since I've been doing that, a lot of the issues associated with moving files to CP flash seem to have gone away.
Almost never do this but I paid for the faster shipping on mine. It came yesterday... Got almost no sleep last night π
Were you trying to speed run porting https://github.com/RetiredWizard/PyDOS to it or something? π
@unique cairn No, I'll probably get an update out for that but I really like the Fruit Jam OS as the primary shell for the Fruit Jam π I was just really excited to get my hands on it because using a Micro Controller as the CPU of a general computer was the idea that got me involved with Micro Controllers in the first place.
Thank you, I did not knew ESPNOW was available in CP.
Right now I have copied your demo (no D0 button but just timer).
The goal is to do an ESPNOW chat application in CP.
Thanks for this tip! I'll try it out
π
π
Hi!
good afternoon
π
Cool discount. I built a cube with these
hihi
Yeah, look how low that product number is!
(For reference, Fruit Jam is #6200 compared to #1487)
Is there a guide for the 4 panel example?
no guide for that one in particular
Thanks, JP!
thanks!
Thanks JP. Short and sweet

you could do the old trick of putting some masking tape or something on the side to prevent the light leak lol
hm, maybe a VESA-compatible backplate would be neat too. I kinda want to mount one on a TV or monitor.
that LED window is so slick
@gaunt plume , like the back of the Raspberry Pi Monitor.
magtag!
Yea, I like my Magnets.
If you get a magtag and want a fun ready-to-go project for it I made an ISS tracker awhile back https://github.com/apendley/magtag-iss-tracker
MagTag 2025 Edition:
https://www.adafruit.com/product/4800
I actually just realized the display in the new version is different, so you might have to slightly adjust the code to use that driver instead of the old one
I don't have one of the new ones so I can't test it myself unfortunately
but if anyone wants to make a pull request to the magtag iss tracker for the new display I would be very grateful! π
oh also I just saw the note that the 2025 one only works with CP 10
so I guess I need to update the project to use that from CP 9
maybe I can do that later today

the project we want to make is a particle tachyon iot device that uses shazam and the new 25 megabyte voice model. we want to put it inside a toy parrotβnot a real parrot, just something that looks like one. when it hears a song, it'll say the name and title of the track. for us, it'll squawk, "you're listening to joy division again, squawk." based on current trends, there's a 67% chance we'll actually finish this prototype within the next six months.

Don't forget to tell us your plan for the Circuit Python Day...

No sound @haughty quiver
Sound
JP has sound and that's all that really matters
Read my lips.
No, this is the almost-live-fruitstock-jam channel π
I thought Zed was dead? (Couldn't help the movie reference, sorry...)
I don't think I knew there was an Adafruit nunchuk adapter board - that's really cool
Yeah, the grid makes it pop. Is that a 3d printed part?
What is the dimensions of each of the grids .5.x.5 or smaller
Yup, looks cool even without the grid - you really can't make them look bad!
You have give me sooooo many ideas with these panels. Never thought of the sparkle board to drive a cube
I made the version that uses the 16x16 flexible panel a few years ago and incidentally these little stands that adafruit sells worked great with them https://www.adafruit.com/product/1679
Wait, is there an API to check how many in stock???
I have a usecase for that...
aww no JPs in stock and they're only $39.95
"Call in the next 30 minutes and we'll include a second unit, absolutely free. Just pay separate shipping and handeling.."
JP's a bargain!
Super cool JP! How often are you updating the stock count?
If you could change that 0 to something else...
https://www.adafruit.com/products_api
[Useful docs page]
Would be a good resource for learning to access this type of API information, too
can make a device with one of those siren lights to go off whenever fruit jams are in stock
Limit your rate of usage to 5 requests per minute or less.
Does it require a Fruit Jam? π
π nah just a wifi-capable MCU and one of those lights I guess
There's a single page for all products too, preferably use that instead of lots of single product requests.
But I've got a thing doing 100 fetches at midnight so no issue so far
Can it also display "mother-of-pearl"?
Is there an API for the code?
Nope, that is the product we are watching...

I hope we see a lot of neat little fruit jam games. seems perfectly suited for it π

@rich wing here is what a llm said, i would review it of course, etc
The circuit for using a MOSFET to switch a source is pretty ubiquitous but, like you, I wanted something simpler to assemble, the solution is called a "load switch" which is the high side circuit all combined together into a simple little 6-pin package.
I have used this to switch a 5V output using a 3.3V logic pin.
Here is the one I use: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps22919.pdf

π β Hiya Tim! Hope you're doing well this beautiful Friday
Well, most important - CircuitPython is available in swedish. Thanks to me. π
Yeah, also doing well, thanks. Just finished up (unexpectedly) writing a proto-LSP server for CircuitPython with Claude Code.
Yes, exactly - LSP = Language Server Protocol for completion, etc.
Both boxes looks wrong. π
Try it with a normal font as well. Might be an issue with the font?
Put them next to each other
With the green box up at the top of the screen, was that located the same way you would locate the pink one?
Yes, there's definitely something to do with the font as the script-like font apparently specifically imagines 'ruled lines'
could it be somehow reversing a sign for one vs the other. The one box looked like it has a border that caused the background to be wider while the other one had the reverse where the background was smaller by the same amount.
yea that one shows the differences.
I'm thinking about how those lines would 'stack' on top of one another and not, for example, interfere with the descender for the 'g', etc.
'diacritical marks'
Yes, but don't the two types seem to use different logic for stacking: one where you need to be careful to leave space, and one where space is 'built in'?
Ah, now I follow - must've missed while typing π
Orientations?
Oh, so like LTR, RTL, TB, BT?
Hey Tim, does display text label or bitmap label have a line-height attribute?
Thanks, I always get confused with these two different uses
Also; Γ ΓΓ actually don't have diacritical marks, they are separate characters in the swedish language.
From wikipedia: "In typography and handwriting, an ascender is the portion of a minuscule letter in a Latin-derived alphabet that extends above the mean line of a font."
If anyone is wants more design type knowledge, there is no other than the type bible
https://archive.org/details/the-elements-of-typographic-style-robert-bringhurst-z-lib.org
(Looking at ascenders/descenders reminds me of grade school penmanship paper, with the blue line = the ascender height, the red = the base line, the dashed = the mean line, and the next-lower blue line limits the descenders extending below the red/base line)
I'm using JP's trick of getting the label.bounding_box
Then centering the label based on size.
label.x = round(display.width / 2 - bbwidth)
Thanks for the stream, Tim! Have a good weekend, everyone!
Thanks Tim! Have a great night all
I am back on the trail of the text bug this morning. If anyone wants to follow along I'm on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuwt7CO6WkY and twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
π β
print("AllTheThings!")
Hey regarding the chained assignment
xposition = x_start = yposition = y_start = 0
"While convenient for immutable objects like numbers or strings, chained assignment can lead to unexpected behavior when dealing with mutable objects (e.g., lists, dictionaries). If you assign a mutable object using chained assignment, all variables in the chain will refer to the same object in memory. This means that if you modify the object through one variable, the changes will be reflected in all other variables that point to the same object."
There is a lot going on in that label. I didn't know it measured the font as it goes.
I feel you could simplfy and base the layout on the character 'M'
I'm curious why negative numbers are used. Displayio is (0,0) top left?
Definitely seems like a relative coordinate system.
I'm really thankful for anchor_point and anchor_position. Does that get set by default?
I wonder if there would be a difference here using a monospace font?
Also when does Scale get involved?
I found a comment in the library
"# Note: Scaling is provided at the Group level"
π
Thanks Tim, great work, keep 'er 'tight' π

I can barely hear you over the background robot band
Did you see the Pack of Robot dogs on AGT last night?
7.5" 800x480 Tri-Color eInk / ePaper - Bare Display https://www.adafruit.com/product/6415
I'm always down for a water skiing squirrel.
Adafruit 3.52" 340x180 Quad-Color eInk / ePaper - Bare Display https://www.adafruit.com/product/6414
Can you do gradations of red and yellow on the multi-color e-ink displays like you can do grayscale on black and white displays?

Thanks @open girder and good night. π
Thank you for taking time for us
π
hi!
Hi John more fun for today !!!
πΈπͺ π
Hi JP and everyone playing with circuitpython
π
Wow that was loud in your replay
Can not hear you
Yes, loud compared to your current(previous) vol. Sounds better to me!
That's better
your show was way down on volume to start out had to turn it way uo
Thought I was going deaf
(Maybe just a hair down? You've got some distortion in now)
Your Mike is clipping you a bit. Sound like a carnival man
is this the live-spaceship-chat channel?
"Invasori dello Spazio!"
JP doing the JJAbrams with the lens flare
I was thinking the exact same thing. π
Me three π
One of the coolest things about the RP2 series of chips (Pico2(RP2350), Pico (RP2040)) is being able to get an entire image of the flash as a UF2 file using picotool. Makes it super easy to give to someone else
Interesting that apple ][ hasn't attained an advanced state of "old computer yellow."
Yep for Arduino you can get UF2 files too. Turn on "verbose upload" and you can find the temp compile directory printed and the location of the UF2 file. On my Mac, it looks like /Users/tod/Library/Caches/arduino/sketches/2C5829F9A47E6A95A12E294E495A68D7/Blink.ino.uf2 (with each sketch having a different temp directory)
^^ i think there's a menu option for that as well? in the arduino ide
- smell of smoke demons?
for showing the sketch folder (where your .ino files lives) but not the build products
yah, i can't find it now. i also just grab from the location found in the compile output. something /tmp on linux π
"Here's one I've cooked before..." (Please no! π )
can you look at it with a thermal image... see a hot chip?
45 years is a pretty good run for 16k RAM
could also be a shorted cap
"The game told you not to go North and you went North!"
oooh.... looking crustie from old rosin
your where eaten by the grue
right... the only audio it had was pulsing to the speaker
one of the first asm programs i made was a multi-tone output for that speaker... it was horrible sounding
Apparently: Gnd, Modulation In, NC, V+ https://mirrors.apple2.org.za/ftp.apple.asimov.net/documentation/hardware/video/Sup 'r Mod II - Manual - Page 1.jpeg
lars super mod 3
that's very cool
SupRMod has a wikipedia page - manual page from sources listed there
Or dried fruit
you where expecting dried apple ring slices?
Well, you open an Apple...
And caps can leak dielectric from the leaded end without bulging.
the caps do have a life... they will eventually die... 20 years of life is fairly good
dead ram card and weak power supply would look the same
supply gets weak with old caps
Make sure to short the caps before you touch them. I got a shock once from a PSU that hadn't been connected for several days.
Thanks, JP, fun as always! Have a good afternoon, all!
thanks JP, good show
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone.
On the high voltage side that is.
Thanks JP!
Thanks JP!
Thank John Good Show
π β Hi there, Tim! How're you this afternoon?
Thanks for the stream!
I am working on the BMP5XX driver some more this morning on twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch and yt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxxu5DlG2Ok
composite (or component) is just a inherently better signal than RF... but there where a lot more TV's out there at the time.
Heyyyy π
Heeeeyyyyyy π
Good afternoon.
Hello
hiiiii
