Deep Dive question for @smoky island : What's your preferred way of making sure that Fruit Jam or Metro RP2350 picodvi is set to the right video mode when code.py starts? I'm thinking about this in the context of how to avoid a framebuffer allocation for every auto-load after a save (unless the save changed the resolution or color depth).
I have been starting to use this function: https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_FruitJam/blob/main/adafruit_fruitjam/peripherals.py#L47 for any scripts that want to run under specific sizes or configurations. It doesn't currently, but it could be updated to check the current size before re-initializing if the user requests a config that it is already set for.
nice... that's kinda similar to some stuff I tried where I wrapped my release_displays()... display=... code in an if block that would check if the existing height matched the height I wanted. Do you know of a way to check the current color depth?
I don't think I've used it, so unsure if it works or what the exact correct syntax is, but it looks like get_color_depth is exposed somehow in the C code: https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/blob/main/ports/raspberrypi/bindings/picodvi/Framebuffer.c#L241 though its missing docstrings so it doesn't appear in the documentation.
oh... hmm... interesting!
or maybe it's not fully implemented, I'm not sure. My understanding is "bindings" should contain stuff that sits between python code and the "module" C implementations. So existing in this file makes me think it's intended to be exposed to python somehow (or at lease was intended at some point). I'm not familiar with that proto structure bit though, I don't know how that works on the python side
doesn't seem to be fully implemented...

โค๏ธ sparkline graphs for glancing at data
I had a question about IO_HTTP...
Is there an equivalent to IO_MQTT Publish multiple?
https://docs.circuitpython.org/projects/adafruitio/en/stable/api.html#adafruit_io.adafruit_io.IO_MQTT.publish_multiple
Yes, that's correct, I think batch data is a single feed.
As for now I just IO.send_data() for each feed/value
๐ ๐ป If you want the other type of multiple for IO_HTTP, look at Groups, the group endpoint has a batch version too, which accepts data for multiple feeds in that group.
There might be another multiple one for any feeds and any data, but not sure it's in the libraries, just an API endpoint
I'll take a look at groups, thanks and don't let me derail you ๐
Docs claim the multiple batch endpoint takes any feed keys, let us know if you run into issues in #help-with-wippersnapper-and-adafruitio
https://io.adafruit.com/api/docs/#create-multiple-data-records
think its trekkie world, sure a real pro can tell us
LCARS from Star Trek TNG
Star Trek
what you scrolled past in the browser, and that last file, looked like it used the singular, y_min
whats parent class?
oh this is a multi sparkline, so mins for each series
you might find all the values are still strings too, pretty much all IO data is (as that's how it's stored)
just make floats
give us min 77, max 79
[22:52]Tyeth: if you did the float casting as you build the value list, then kjust use .add_values(list)
[22:53]Tyeth: for (i,val) in enumerate(blah):
, update: i == len(blah) -1
Typed it in wrong channel ๐คฆ
ahhh I get you
definitely
okay the data is new on left not right
oh that would do it (reverse order data)
would this work on blinka pygame display?
ctrl click is meant to work, but yeah old react links ๐คฎ
Fixed, nice work!
Thanks Tim
Thanks Tim!

OBD-II CAN was released in 1996. Pre-1996 vehicles had their own variety of diagnostic systems. As long as your vehicle is 1996 or newer chances are good you can get info from it.
What is the longest length of cable
question so the demo on the site has 2 wires used โฆ you used 3 , whatโs the difference?
Prior to 1996 all car companies had their own propriety systems. They're known collectively as OBD-I even though they're all different.
OBD-II also didn't make it to the EU until around 2002-2003 universally.
Thanks JP!
Thanks JP
Thanks JP!
Sure we CAN-CAN! Thanks, JP!
because we CAN CAN CAN!
CAN SAE J2284 uses 3 wire min... ground, CAN high and CAN low differential signals. Max len is can be much larger than a car. It depends on the cable type use, the baud rate and topology used (star, line, etc).
I worked on a CAN system that had a 1000ft max (at 125kb) range. The test rig i built was massive due to the piles of cables.
limitation on CAN networks is 8 byte packets max... so... tunneling other protocols, can get complicated and slow.
but it CAN be done ๐ https://fosstodon.org/@anecdata/111424624075751815
good morning!
Good morning.
Hey Y'll
Hi folks!
It's not real if it isn't annoying (someone).
I see a steampunk computer in the future.
I type so loudly that I don't need a bell to annoy people ๐
As if my model M clackey keys weren't enough of an attention getter.๐
I've looking for the perfect project for my pink RP2040. However,...no USB A๐ข
the solenoid xylophone reminds me of a room from the Meow Wolf in Denver where they have a whole room full of automated instruments (drums, piano, etc)
The kinetic sculpture at the Museum of Science was still on display and operational when I visited about a year ago.
Oh dang, 10 versions of rp2040 and none is a USB A๐คจ
the CAD parts repo is a treasure trove
ah so you could make an IoT version if you paired the USB host featherwing with e.g. an ESP32
I learned to type on a real typewriter! my mom got it for me for my birthday lol
(yes I'm old)
that's why I type loudly on every keyboard lmao
Bummer, no solenoid drive in the parts bin. OOS at Adafruit and Digikey.๐ข
I feel the same, the Pocket Operator is cool in theory, but it's clunky
Great show, thanks @hard hollow and @split gazelle!
Thanks @hard hollow & @split gazelle . See you all tonight.
Thank you both for taking time for us.
Thanks folks cya night!

Hello all.
Hey Y'll
I'm not seeing a notice that the show was canceled this week. Sorry, I don't have any info. Nothing on the blog that I see.
I guess it was pay the Tarrifs or pay the internet bill. Tarrifs won.
If the HTML packets come from China, do I have to pay a tariff on them?
That's what we need. A "bitcoin" version of shipping. Bitshipping. FedCoin.
BitEx
Unfortunately Ladyada is unwell, and her and PT were the show and tell hosts for this week (summer availibility is hard)
is aae cancelled too?
Hope she's doing better. So, no Show and Tell or AAE tonight?
I believe definitely no AAE, although PT was talking about airing something else... So keep an eye out
Show and tell is probably a bust
k get well soon @proper trench
I hope she feels better soon. Sucks to be sick.
Definitely! Fingers crossed for something interesting at 8pm anyway.
Thanks for the update!
Let's do this!
๐ ๐
Great afternoon to all. Looking forward to a great show.

I've only seen them recently.
Yup you can chain up to 8 board. Pretty cool
you still have up the sine wave editor
You still have your Claude window open
Very clever, that Claude... ๐ค
You are blowing my mind. Very cool
You don't have to be polite to it, JP. It's just a machine.
The robot uprising is not with us, yet. ๐
It'll be interesting to see how bad the output Claude and others generate once they get retrained on all the code they're generating now. I suspect it'll be like making a xerox of a xerox of a xerox of a xerox...
So your using a paid subscription of claude
Raga_Kafi... I might order one with my morning croissant.
Very cool. Thanks JP!
Great Workshop, JP ๐
Gret vidoe
Bye all. ๐
thanks so much everyone, see you later!
Looks like I disconnected for a moment, but shows reconnected on my side now. If stream freezes try refresh.
Seem to be back now
case sensitive commands?
Nope, ignores case for commands
and /? help for commands? or any / arguments, like for dir?
super cool. the /? is probably unnecessary without the extra arguments for commands. Expect them unused so save your time for other bits
ooo /s
I took years to find DIR /s (recursive) and /b (skip header info, more like one line per file batch mode output)
Detail command doc is at github.com/retiredwizard/PyDOS
I've been using the current release tag (0.0.4) then compared to HEAD.
e.g. https://api.github.com/repos/adafruit/Fruit-Jam-OS/compare/0.0.4...HEAD
yeah same thing, but slightly different url for api
could filter the filenames in files collection to /app
(i have adabot tell me if only .md or CI changes or asset images)
Yeah the zips comparison would avoid some unnecessary releases (for build py)
I'm looking forward to the first one of us that sends the PR to an LLM for review as part of CI, the build.py file would be a perfect example where it may not affect the outputs
maybe filename case or some line endings
use the "touch" command to update file time to current, then generate and test hashes
yeah, I thought this was to test the hash varies with timestamp
You can alter to a specific timestamp using touch, man touch look for -t
Then you could have the zips match the content change time or whatever
There definitely is a limit on agents, per organisation, the circuitpython builds eat most of them
Hey Miz Swift ๐
The waiting yesterday was so bad I made our job allow individual build targets. Each time you pushed then circuitpython ran two builds of 500 jobs ๐
debug port probably (looks nearly identical but 3pins)
Not steam, a debug
You could add a workflow_dispatch target as well as schedule, then can manually trigger
just add workflow_dispatch:
manually trigger any workflow. Add it to the triggers section, like pulls and schedules
it's already there!
the schedule action has it already, so can be manually triggered in the UI
change that action name, easier to distinguish
Thanks Tim!
Thanks Tim! Have a great weekend all ๐

Thanks

here's Jeff's post: http://www.copperwood.com/carlandjerry.htm
For ten years, from 1954 to 1964, John T. Frye wrote stories for Popular Electronics about a pair of teen boys who used electronics to help people, foil criminals, impress girls, and get out of jams. The stories explained the priciples behind the gadgetry that Carl and Jerry built, inspiring a generation of young tinkerers to go down in the base...
A side benefit of the remote thermal sensor is that it can also detect human movement.
The most recent Carl & Jerry 5-volume publication (2023) https://www.amazon.com/Carl-Jerry-Their-Complete-Adventures/
The thermal image is of me making a shadow puppet. Doesn't work as well with heat instead of light. Note that the prototype converts the image from the forward-facing camera to a selfie, but the AIO -posted image is corrected from the mirror image to a standard image.
Thanks all for sharing. Great projects all
Thanks to all who shared.
awesome project Mehrdad
this is so cool. What is the name?
That was Chumby
The Chumby was a consumer electronics product formerly made by Chumby Industries, Inc. It is an embedded computer which provides Internet and LAN access via a Wi-Fi connection. Through this connection, the Chumby runs various software widgets. In 2010 Sony introduced a single product based on an offshoot version of Chumby, the Sony Dash.
Oh I remember that now! I love the leather in the design
By the way, I am working on emulation of camera, mics, display so that folks can use this on bare Raspberry Pi. There are other hardware specific features like IR and sensors that cannot be emulated though.

Open source support, for the win!๐ค
VLC - more open source goodness ๐
Ah, so you need some space-filling to make up the difference in line lengths?
CP is supposed to support ANSI scrolling ranges natively now, have you tried that?
That stream is perfect timing for a question I had.
I was wondering if it was possible to have curses in CircuitPython using that terminalio.
The idea is that maybe there is enough VT100 support to actually use the terminal and do text UI.
Next step/question is about custom character so that games could be done in text mode, like in good old days with Sinclair (Timex for the US).
Is something trimming the text before it's printed?
Yeah a font with a few "sprite" like game element would do the trick. Great work.
to test you could try adding a period at the end of the blanks you're padding with
Howdy all.
Maybe remove any trailing /r/n?
Yeah, is it not performing a carriage return?
Can you type a long line? Maybe just a single caracter repeated, to see if it scroll?
Is the bottom status bar in the same "terminalio"?
Maybe if it is a separate object, the scrolling could be easier.
going to the next line will probably mess up your line count internally
If the scroll work inside terminalio, it might be more "smooth" to let C code do the scrolling.
actually core does support ranged scrolling
Can't you split and have the two other line to be another object?
If that is possible, then even easier...
understandable, could be a future update ๐
Gemini tell me: To set a scrolling region on a VT100 terminal, the escape sequence ESC [ {top};{bottom} r is used. This sequence defines the top and bottom lines of the scrolling region. For example, ESC [ 10;20r would set the scrolling region to lines 10 through 20. When text is output that exceeds the scrolling region, the terminal will scroll within that defined area, rather than the entire screen.
That's true, you would have to maintain the buffer separately
https://docs.circuitpython.org/en/latest/shared-bindings/terminalio/
- ESC [ nnnn ; mmmm r - Set scrolling range between rows nnnn and mmmm.
How are the AI Buddies with CP? I've not been doing much CP lately... is there enough public code out there for them or do you need to feed them the CP Docs ...
I had wanted to update the core ansi color sequences so they worked on a character basis but ended up putting that off
that and the blinking cursor ๐
A lot of the CP code is open source, so AI bot got it for learning, I think LadyAda showed how she use AI to help write driver, I guess it also work for CP code.
My experience is that it generate CP code, but it call non-existing library that does the hard work... so the code was not working, but it looks nice. ๐
What next? Visual beep?
We need a well written system prompt \ project setting prompt (the Agents have different names) that you load that explain CP, points to all the resources, how to find librariers, etc. And one loaded it would greatly improve your Agent experience with CP ...
You don't need a fine-tuned model... the prompt would do that
Foam.AI.Guy? FoamyG.ai?
(Notes for future Tim)
Thanks, Tim! Good stream!
Thanks ๐

This ready-to-go NeoPixel LED Outdoor Nettingย will make it easy to make large grids easyย without having to piece together multiple LED strips. It looks like a 20 x 20 RGB LED grid, ...
a fun project might be to put a wifi-card on that and control it remotely. probably draws a ton of power though
someone should make some kind of firmware specifically for playing animations like this. It's cool that you can sort of rig this up with WLED but it's a lot of work and is pretty finicky
oh yeah you can do animated gifs in circuitpython. I wonder how much work it is to do multiple gifs on a neomatrix in CP vs. PixelMagic/WLED
For custom text scrolling in WLED, you can change the text by changing the title of the segment
YES
displayio doesn't work on neomatrix
I was just about to say, that's the most difficult part probably of making this work in CP
I did get it working with a pixel buffer, but it was too slow, and I could only animate slowly
Great show, thanks @rocky reef @hard hollow!

Some SAM2695 General MIDI chip hacking by the awesome Kevin of diyelectromusic https://diyelectromusic.com/2025/06/26/xiao-esp32-c3-midi-synthesizer/
XIAO ESP32-C3 MIDIย Synthesizer
I quite like many of the XIAO boards, so when I got an email announcing the XIAO MIDI Synthesizer I went off to buy one and take a look.
This uses the Dream SAM2695 MIDI device, which is a General MIDI instrument in a chip. I have a couple of devices that use this chip, so at some point Iโll talk about some of them too.
- Part 1 โ Getting started and getting code running.
- Partย 2 โ Swapping the ESP32-C3 for a SAMD21 to get USB MIDI.
- Partย 3 โ Taking a deeper look at the SAM2695 itself.
- Partย 4 โ A USB MIDI Synth Module using the SAMD21 again as a USB MIDI Host.
- Partย 5 โ A Serial MIDI Synth Module using the original ESP32-C3.
- Partย 6 โ Pairs the Synth with a XIAO Expansion board to add display and potentiometers.

Kind of blows my mind that soldering irons have CPUs and displays now
but can they play Doom yet
It doesn't actually run Doom, it just plays video from USB, essentially just an external display. TS80 uses STM32F103T8U6 with 64 kB Flash and 20 kB RAM, Doom requires about 256kB of storage for the miniwad and at least 256kB of RAM, see the nRF52840 port: https://redd.it/qswslg
Source code: https://github.com/joric/ts80player/tree/master/firmwa...
ha, awesome
I think they can doom plenty of things quite handily
brb getting 128 soldering irons to get the DoomIron resolution to a playable state
Gotta use a Thunderbolt 4 cable with that soldering iron because its display is HDMI

JP You now have something in common with Big Clive... A scorched benchtop. ๐
Sound is okay.
Did you buy all new nobs @haughty quiver ?
Can you control tempo?
You buy different sequencers for different tempos
"oh you got the 131 bpm version in matte green!"
Lol
yeah maybe use "hold" actions: e.g. left-most encoder is tempo, hold-and-twist to adjust tempo, which is reflected on the LEDs. Similarly could do transpose, scale select, etc. as hold actions on other encoders
Sounds like a Teenage Engineering product
Maybe a double-press of the first knob sets an alternate interface for the next few?

theoretically, how many noodles can you drive with an arduino, and could you use a pwm driver (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1455) or would the power draw be too much?
@urban gale In theory you could drive as many noodles as you have GPIO capable of PWM. You would have to keep an eye on the power draw but you should be able to drive quite a few (I've got a project that runs 6 from a QT Py)
Also, you could use something like https://www.adafruit.com/product/4886
