Gameboy/Gameboy Color games especially look sooo good on that screen

all of the official nintendo switch controllers also work on it, including the official SNES pads they released a few years ago
Secret of Mana coop is killer on it ๐

Thanks JP!
thanks everyone!
Fantastic workshop today. Learning a bunch from the CAD tutorials. Thank you!
so glad to hear it!
Hia Scott, I hope all is well with everything for you esp the new child on the way.
I noticed you updated circuitmatter on git ๐

How well do Matter and Apple home play together? What I am trying to figure out is if I can use a ESP Thread Border Router board instead of Home Pod Mini as the "hub" in a way that is seamless for Apple Home.
"If you have iOS 18, you can add and control Matter accessories to the Home app without a home hub" https://support.apple.com/en-us/102135
Thanks, maybe I'll take a look at Home Bridge on a RPI.
hay scott did you make the circuitpython powered Gameboy cartridge? if you did is it possible to make a circuitpython powered ds/3ds cart?
I'm working on writing docs for an open source project while I listen to your stream. ๐
where are the codes like "P" defined ?
7.7.7 ? ๐
the min measured value was an arbitrary number ( -27315 ) did you notice they use out of band type data as special flags?
is there a heuristic that would help the reader to transform from python-like names, to find things in the specs
can you build an exception spelling list for Ruff ?
what tools would help determine the "derives from" ?
would mater work on pc like my windows pc running python or some other program/language?
ok i was wanting to ask because if it can work naively on my windows pc it would be cool to have my status of my pc accessible via google assistant.
The $11 one looked like a carrier board
apparently people are trying to use a rasberry pi/arduino to emulate a ds cart and apparently the ds carts protocol requires very precise timing and low latency. thay say "... The Pico has special programmable hardware in it which make this barely possible.
The strict timing makes it impossible to use other microcontrollers or microprocessors. Even if you have a regular Pi clocked above 1GHz, it still won't work reliably due to it running under Linux, and interrupting your tight loops for so long that you miss a cartridge clock edge.
As for regular microcontrollers, they don't have nearly high enough clocks to be able to spinloop the CPU on them.
You either use an RP2040-based board, or get an FPGA, there is no in-between.
Alternatively you can get something running above 1GHz, but you need to be able to disable interrupts, which is usually not possible." maybe the RP2350 might work. heres the thread i found this info.
https://gbatemp.net/threads/using-a-rasberry-pi-arduino-to-emulate-a-ds-cart.634743/
that "nano matter" seems to be related home automation
I was just going to ask support about BLE audio capture
( I should have said bluetooth instead of BLE, sorry )
๐
Do you have a favorite currently-supported in CircuitPython chip? One you reach for first for noodling around with a new project?
Nice. I'd love to do something with eInk in future. Recently picked up an ESP32-S3 reverse TFT Feather
I've been playing with Soldered's 10" eInk (esp32). It uses an 8-bit parallel display, so far I've just been trying to understand the Micropython library. I'm thinking I'll need to write a whole new display bus, possibly starting with the spi-bus to pass into the e-ink framebuffer
So no CircuitPython Lego brick color sorting project?
I think ePaper is the future for anyone working in an office/largely on documents
Oh, for sure, reduction in eye strain is huge
Enjoy the time to relax! Have a nice weekend!
Have fun! Congrats in advance.
Thanks Scott, enjoy your family and time off ๐
thanks!

Watch out for the bizarro Ready Killer-watt. Be safe out there.
electricity is fine, that whole "it can kill you" thing is just a story made up by Big Steam Power
I find high voltage to be very stimulating.
hihi
Hello all!
Good afternoon.
Hi great day to you all
A relay good bargain today.
lets there be relay
wait, with the glasses off, I swear he looks just like SuperJEP
oh good glasses are back on
hehe
Lars relay of electricity
That's a great price on the relay
We use the signal relays more than power, but still very handy
If you want to use it w/o a feather, you can just wire to GND and Signal right?
Turn off-time to zero so we can see the full speed ๐
one could build relay for bilge pump
Maybe 3V too
I'll look at the schematic while you caht
Yes, JP2 is connected to RELAYSIGNAL which is the pin to activate the relay. You'll need to connect 3V, GND, and SIGNAL
and DON'T close any of the solder-jumpers
Handy for QT-PYs
Hearing protection?
JP, is the curare-tipped dart launcher or the other thing?
Handy for boat automations
dang, almost got him
Thanks @haughty quiver
thanks JP
Powerful product selection today. Thanks JP!
Thanks JP ๐
Thank you sir!
thank you all!
Thanks JP. Picked up 2 of them
Oops got here late... getting my order in.. running video on high speed!

This is a good deal on a capable feather. I can't understand the low price

Hello! ๐
I only celebrate MEOW-lo-ween
ahaha
there are so many good screen mods for gameboys these days ๐ฎ
it's the third eye acting up
I actually made a custom lid for exactly that case, that has a button thingy built in
I should put it on my printables
lars and co with third eyes
Nintendo used to just C&D anyone that had that logo in their ROM. Ask me how I know ๐ ๐
I think it's okay now lol, they have bigger fish to fry. In 2000 though I made a game for a competition, and nintendo C&D'd it within a week of the website publishing our games lol
doh!
Ooo is it DMX time? I've got next to no experience except a friend using for stage/event lighting, but you mentioned architectural use so I wondered if you had any experience with that side of DMX?
with the extra eye, he can always keep an eye on the chat

unfortunately, most of the DMX libraries in the Arduino Library Manager only work with ATmega-based boards
does DMX have any commands or is it all driven by the host setting brightnesses per channel
If you put that red and blue on your car, you could get through traffic faster. LOL
larsOween
RDM, or remote device management, works by sending pulses of data down the DMX line in-between the โnormalโ DMX commands. While the DMX protocol originally left pins 4 and 5 of the XLR connector open for โfuture useโ, RDM actually doesn't use them either! This is one of the most common misconceptions of RDM.Mar 14, 2023
Looked like most of the architectural examples were skyscrapers with neopixels wrapped around them
Thanks JP! Happy Halloween!
Thanks JP ๐
Great stream, thanks JP

I always forget the build commands for unix. Works great for testing non-hardware.
Now ideal would be a hardware emulation layer on it ๐
Is that pygame displayio still outdated? It was good!
You could do the screenshot testing for displayio on Wokwi.com
hi btw
The hardest part may be writing a fake SPI/parallel "bus" and board. That could create a FourWire bus and then interpret the display commands
try os.listdir on "/" or something
got to be careful playing recursive file games (or testing)
I think the executible for unix has a lot of flags you can provide
much better than bitmaps
3.3, wow - seems so old
Yeah, probably never updated the document from when first written
One thing I have done, is look at a PR that ran and what the log was for doing the tests, it includes the commands ran to have the tests go
Actions would work too, I just don't understand that (or taken the time to)
It does
Yes, you'll branch off the current branch
Problem solving is one of the top skills I look whenever I'm helping with hiring
Well that's just it, showing how to work out of a problem is not always something that's available from the learn guides, for example
Not to mention that there's no way to include every possible problem area/case
Livestream vs edited clip are very different types of shows.
I do wish the guides would include a sort of round up of frequently-encountered issues. I bet yourself, Dan H, and all the lovely folks here on the discord who answer calls for help on the regular have a greatest hits of things that crop up
I suppose more what I had in mind was 'in-line' commentary; a sort of 'this step has gone wrong for some folks - here's how to tell/unbreak things'.
All to say, I hope the frequency with which certain questions arise is being accounted for in some capacity to feed back into the guides. (Of course I'm assuming such questions exist, which maybe a wrong-headed approach)
Thanks for the stream! I might be able to watch a live Saturday for the first time in a while!
I sometimes add stuff to the guides or add a warning box, etc. It's a lot faster for me to paste a link than explain something. Feel free to suggest something that you think should be written down.
I think I'm mostly fumbling to express a possibility I see in expanding the rhetorical situation of the learn guides to capture some of the flavor of the deep dives and help folks make the shift from beginner to intermediate or intermediate to advanced by using CircuitPython as a touchstone for various topics. Totally a coincidence that it's the sort of thing I'm hungry to read ๐ค
I am getting started with the stream now. Looking at a few library PRs then maybe some tinkering on the .org site. You can follow along on twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or yt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU4ZXN_1kig
๐
Doing pretty well - hope you are, too. Good to see you on this fine Saturday afternoon
Hello, I see you are doing PR reviews today, I recently made a small PR to template engine, if you have time, could you take a look?
Is the final goal to remove last comma or to convert to these tags?
Features in a different color 'tag' box?
Maybe just larger or bold text for the features list? Just thinking visual separation
Invert on hover?
Or purple text, and outline as you say
Sharp!
(I was drawing inspiration from the Auto Install button some boards have)
(Very punny, Dan H ๐ )
Try any example and put error as second to last line of template
Simplest way to test would be to put "{% endfor %}" after line 16 in simpletest example
(Agreed - attach/remove is a failure of parallel construction)
Yes, intentional for better visibility
I just noticed one more variable naming change to do
Thanks for merging
I used it for JSON too ๐
Thanks for the stream!

@haughty quiver Can the circuit python IRremote library emulate my Blu-ray or remote? The IRremote library for Arduino can't recognize my remote. My Blu-ray player is an old Sony player. I don't know what model number it is right now because I'm out and about right now.
@tulip kestrel it probably can, check out this guide for detailed info https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-tv-zapper-with-circuit-playground-express
Sony remote codes are pretty well documented and understood, however this person ran into an issue with a particular one and wrote up their findings https://flameeyes.blog/2020/06/13/controlling-tv-via-python/
This is yet another of the pre-announced projects, and possibly one of the most procrastinated ones. I ownโฆ

Y'all are cracking me up ๐ This is pretty complicated at the moment though lol
No, the Pico is a microcontroller, with much less power and resources
the data media
2x5 Socket Header: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5327
The PICO(s) also a cheaper way to do some things. I have a couple with versions of BASIC on them displaying to VGA monitors.
Great point, tons of stuff you can do that doesn't need the power of a Raspberry Pi
@vagrant flax yea, and the new PICO2 is even better. The TI-99 world is even using the PICO to update the aging VDP in a way cheaper and easier to use than on FPGA.
Gotta be this guy to use the M.2 hat right now
yup never got into Pi b/c I usually just need to do simple things like run some LEDs or servos. Never saw the need to run an entire OS for that. Picos may get me on board (no pun intended) for sure
Hmm.. perhaps this NFC project could be accomplished with a PICO. The PICO does do VGA (and even HDMI) display.
eink for it to show what it have
Yea, the graphics and storage is a great plus over the PICO.
I think I still have handbrake lol
I don't actually have any drives that I can put a DVD into anymore though ๐
there is nice nvmne storage 2230 what is small enough so could need some pcie gen3 for example to support on the oard for m.2

Pixel-wise horizontal scrolling would be nice. Vertical scrolling (up or down) would be frosting on the cake.
YT chat seems slow, recommenting: โโThere's already a couple of methods in adafruit_display_text/init.py wrap_text_* that will come in handy
Portalbase for the MatrixPortal has a nice horizontal scrolling scheme.
Weird, I posted it, and now it's not there. Not important, probably a me problem
I did a lot of display text stuff recently. One was a take on magtag-literary-quote-clock to use custom cursive fonts on a bigger display, needed to handle baseline alignment. Other is a word clock that uses the animation classes to "scroll" the text; first ease out, update text, ease in from the other side. Curious to see how your project goes.

gimme a sec, I'll pull it up
at least the community bundle
yeah this animation lib is pretty cool, definitely should be in a bundle
๐
Just back from work - what's the project today?
Ah cool, so static vs dynamic sizing. Yeah I suppose that predictability helpful when considering right/left justification/centering
I bet being able to specify a monospace font would be useful if you wanted to pre-calculate text in excess of what fits in the view
I'm also reminded of how they layout for newsprint where there will be subtle adjustments to kerning to preserve nice columns

If anyone is interested in trying out what I have so far it's pushed to this branch: https://github.com/FoamyGuy/Adafruit_CircuitPython_Display_Text/tree/text_box very much considered "pre-alpha" at this point, let me know if you find bugs.

Ah it finally stopped
Btw, an update on a previous question on analog mux for VPP switchingโฆ I ended up using an OpAmp with an arduino PWM output to synthethize the VPP I want, uses a single pin and less cabling. Just make sure you use an opamp that can handle 0V input when not using symmetric power for it, like an LM358N, that can output 0V with 0 on input as well. I burnt two other amps before noticing that.

CRTs are so great: "Hey, what if we point an electron gun at your face! We'll use 27,000 Volts to accelerate a beam of electrons at your face!" "My face? Um..." "Don't worry, we'll put a metal screen in between. And some glass." "But wait, 27 thousand volts? And pointed at my face?"
wait, I missed that... what software is that?
Bottango I think
Very similar to how I generate board mounts in my SolidPython/OpenSCAD library, spkb. I haven't really worked on adding more boards yet, but it already generates mounts for the Pro Micro and the STM32 Blackpill (and I think I use the STM32 Blackpill one for my RP2040 Type-C as well)
except since it's OpenSCAD, it's all built with solid primitives and CSG ops, but same idea

Super Game Boy only accept/run Game Boy games (not Game Boy Color games, or only those compatible with Game Boy).
Few Game Boy games have special "function" when running on Super Game Boy... like customized decoration around the game, or pre-selecting the color palette... but I have no clue how to put those information in a Game Boy cartridge.
is it online already?

๐ hey tim, nice one doing all the How to Install circuitpython buttons!
With the kwargs, how could you avoid that missing error message problem, would you need the base class (bitmap label) to check all kwargs for validity and similarly in this class?
I believe that's correct, the / folder takes precedent, so stick frozen replacement libraries there, then after root folder (/) the priority is frozen then lib
like super().super().init() ?
I got hung up on super.super, and seems like __bases__ gives us access to the super super class etc.
looks like its something like __bases__[0].__init__(self) except that would be one level, so print __bases__
this. or self. probably
thanks for trying
Ah the old storing state in hidden places ๐ I'd never be caught doing such things chuckle much...
Got a bit more on super,
1๏ธโฃ it looks like __bases__ is only off of the class type, so type(self).__bases__ (definitely in micropy 1.19)
2๏ธโฃ try passing the parent class to skip then self as args, e.g. super(bitmap_label.label, self).__init__ should skip bitmap_label.
3๏ธโฃ The last one was Method Resolution Order (__mro__), but didn't work in micrpython 1.19, which would be
mro = type(self).__mro__
mro[2].__init__(self)
no error, encouraging
I guess you specify the one to call super from
Still going! (onYouTube)
yeah didnt spot much on twitch
the parent group / tilegrid can be moved, and the label will be positioned at grid +x and grid+y
I got the impression that every x/y was relative to grid/group/something, but I got a bit confused I must say (and haven't revisited for years)
returning the real screen x + y? instead of the relative to parent version?
I found that model in my head fell down once I looked at the tilegrids too, I was trying to get width+height of groups, but found it didn't include widgets bounding boxes, and had to get from widgets directly. This was many refactors ago
Nice!
so like Max(children.width) each time you ask for group.width, a bit expensive, but would nicely call through to sub group+children
Thanks Tim, thoroughly appreciated!

That is sweet, love the skull SAO
The whole SAO thing was really cool to see how much creativity in pcb add-ons there was. This is cool
Thank you to all who shared.
Thanks all
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.
Happy International Compressor Failure Day everyone!
Thanks!

One more plug for AxiDraw, Here using CLIPasso: Semantically-Aware Object Sketching to draw a Porsche 911
Ooooo, time to maybe showcase my TI99 4a stuff.
If memory serves, there have been actual cases where Bambu printers started printing someone else's STLs without prompting.
I watched the video they did, and it was very much directed at Bambu. Every point was in refernce to Bambu, even thought they never said their name.

Night all!
Hi, there was a question from "diceymango" about monitoring the dish washer to know when it is finished.
Vibration is the option discussed... but the best is a power mesurement smart plug. You can watch a full cycle and see it warm the water, maybe some motor to move water around, ... so it is easy to tell that after x minutes of very low power consumption, the "cycle" is "finished". Just having such a plug and displaying it on Home Assistant was a live changer in my family.
Especially usefull for cycle with variable lenght depending on "dirtyness" of what you clean.
Morning/afternoon/evening all. ๐
hullo there
Good afternoon JP. Looking forward to your show.
I think there is a Lars element to today's show...
๐
hello!
Good afternoon.
hello!
Hello! ๐
Good afternoon
๐ธ๐ช๐
Good evening Mr. Bergdahl.
Evening mr. Callaway
Lol
"Pardon me, do you have any Grey Coupon?"
Triangulate on the Qualia. (Uses diplay shapes rather than VectorIO)
Thereโs a white dot on that there XLR cable connector.
Screen is still showing parsec code window
I was confused in Show&Tell, I was thinking "arduino size" this must be C. But now I see CircuitPython.
Ho wait?
Too many screens. ๐
No CircuitPython support for DMX, yet?
Did you see that DFrobot just dropped an esp DMX board
https://wiki.dfrobot.com/SKU_DFR0944_DMX512_Programming_the_Controller
Apparently in 2017 I had fun with ArtNet that is a kind of DMX512 over IP. I had a raspberry pi with LED matrix pretending to be an ArtNet device, and some software running on my MAC to create visual effect.
So I had fun with DMX without any DMX hardware.
https://x.com/DavidGlaude/status/922949346559217666
Don't ask, I forgot everything.
This is https://t.co/xEiUeGFKrp driving a 16*16 @pimoroni Unicorn HAT HD from a Mac. Latency of unknown origin... I dunno how to fix it.
try NEO_GRB maybe?
Sourceforge?!? I haven't heard that name in a very long time
larsforge
Not to be confused with GitLars...
oh yeah should totally be NEO_GRB instead of NEO_GBR. Oh wait, that's not a normal ws2812 strip but those weird bulb things
Or Larsiverse
Wait, why is it so slow, you change the code and it does not instantly run the new code?
I think I know!
I don't think the API for .fill() is R, G, B
it's:
void fill(uint32_t c = 0, uint16_t first = 0, uint16_t count = 0);
ahahah yep! hahaha
So much for strong typed languages...
ha
โ๏ธ
I'm learning Rust on embedded now, and this really makes me want to do this in Rust ๐น
And now try to figure out how to convert R, G, B to a 32 bit value... in C. It is just mask and shift... you will feel like writing assembly code. ๐
thank you @vagrant flax
Yay! ๐
@vagrant flax ๐
In DMX, when you run out of address, you start to use "universe"...
I don't use Adafruit_NeoPixel very often so didn't think to look at that ๐
LarsUniverse
confusingly the API for setting a single LED is strip.setPixelColor(n, r,g,b) where 'n' is the LED to change and r,g,b are the color values. but you can also do .setPixelColor(n,c) where c is a 32-bit number like 0xff00ff
there's also a packed color overload:
void setPixelColor(uint16_t n, uint32_t c);
where c is a hex value
The Uber guide uses intergers
strip.setPixelColor(11, 255, 0, 255);
It takes a villageโฆ
Now I will dream of DMX Xmas decoration...
Forget about WLED and all those easy things, go get old DMZ hardware.
It's Thanksgiving in the US next week. Here's a turkey for you:
So benefit of DMX is distance, works on all your XLR cable, standard, ...
Suddenly not hungry.
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone.
Thanks JP + all
Thanks for the show @haughty quiver, have a happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks JP, Happy Thanksgiving to US folks ๐
๐ฆ
Thanks, JP. ๐
Thanks JP!
Bye all. ๐
thanks JP!
I am thankful for the workshop and Adafruit community. Happy Thanksgiving!
you're welcome, thanks so much again!

ooo adabot, nice, and hi all
is that stalled one logging whether the request is returning the rate limit info (recently an issue where some endpoints/requests were unexpectedly not providing the rate limit header info)
lol, you wanted logs, you got megabytes of logs
think there was a PR for that so should be ok
You should subscribe to webhook events instead of polling the API for data. This will help your integration stay within the API rate limit.
โ https://docs.github.com/en/rest/using-the-rest-api/best-practices-for-using-the-rest-api?apiVersion=2022-11-28#avoid-polling
that's interesting/useful! In this case the rate limit is not requested, but added as a HTTP response header to most/all API endpoints
Okay, that makes sense why this wouldn't be the best option in the short-to-medium term.
Can you visulize the log data? Might help see where all the errors show up?
timezones / gmt offsets, probably +1hr
oh that makes more sense
maybe github is a touch slower in sync terms, so it is still 0 left for the remainder of the second
looks in the log like you said, the check continues until the job is cancelled
you've got me curious, maybe print the headers from raw.github request
What if you search all open issues and PRs from the adafruit org, and ignore results from non-CircuitPython related repos? Basically, try creating an API call with this search query: is:open archived:false org:adafruit sort:created-desc
not worth it for 5 replaces, but that kind of find/replace is one of those times I love regex
lol, no it's a perfect example, both ffmpeg and regex are used fantastically when used well or at the right moment, and both have a weird situation that once you've mastered enough of either then your desire to shoe-horn it into every situation grows uncontrollably.
i'm awful at python, but I thought datetime was timezone unaware and always used local system time, unless you ask for utcnow
i did hear of some change. but got confused when trying to play in IO circuitpython+python with timezones, and yeah generally avoid timezones like the plague
GitHub's REST API considers every pull request an issue, but not every issue is a pull request. For this reason, "Issues" endpoints may return both issues and pull requests in the response. You can identify pull requests by the pull_request key. Be aware that the id of a pull request returned from "Issues" endpoints will be an issue id. To find out the pull request id, use the "List pull requests" endpoint.

Think that might be wait for network on boot option in raspi config
Just turn option off. It will do networking but not stall if issues (network resolves usually later)
I believe you could set the DISPLAY env var
logo?
