no recollection what i sampled for that lol
Hey John. Good afternoon
And there he is!
@clever summit I'll see your ๐ธ๐ช, and raise you a ๐ฌ๐ง ...
๐ฎ๐น
๐๐ฅช
It's snowing here. ๐จ๏ธ
Just finished the siding repair in time for the workshop โ and tonightโs wind storm.
Lol. No rain check on the umbrella. ๐
New crimping pliers with metric screw cutters on their way. Will add to the crimper collection.
"raise"... ๐
Those LED strips in the background are so mesmerizing...
@clever summit Did I spell that wrong? ๐ค
Good old ANSI.SYS
Woohoo ANSI!
I was halfway expecting the Parsec bumper sounds to be meowsic meows ๐ธ
The pinout() function for raspberry pi is such a cool terminal hack
The black cat keyboard project is amazing. Scores major points for style and design!
@haughty quiver Not seeing the learn guide if it's supposed to be displayed right now
Can't see it, @haughty quiver
Plateless lars is hungry lars
๐
Want to hear the keyboard play โPaint It Blackโ or โBlack Cat Moan.โ
CyberLars Piano
looks amazing.
I like the cat eyes. Very cool
I like the matte black
Auto version of "murdered out"
Looks more like a cat now.
So, the ERC and DRC in Eagle is super helpful for avoiding those kind of issues (islands etc.)
I know it's a big learning curve, but it's worth it
KiCAD also helps with the issue. Similar learning curve, too.
liking onshape here, if your designs are public, and browser based is so handy
The rules checks are just great at catching issues before you send it to PCB fab shop
intoxicating
Looks really great @cinder wind
thanks! picotouch_grid is fun but has key ghosting issues
@cinder wind ๐
what causes it, is it a bit like the capacitive touches not returning to normal as quickly as expected or something?
picotouch_grid is not fully baked yet. but if you want to look at the source code: https://github.com/todbot/picotouch/tree/main/circuitpython/picotouch_grid/picotouch_grid
beautiful todbot!
It's a stress relief toy. ๐
I would love to get one of theses keyboards of Tod's
if you press two keys on a diagonal, the other two keys at the opposite corners are triggered. it's an X/Y capacitive touch grid, and I've not been able to figure out the captouch equivalent of per-key diodes ๐
wow, next level complexities ๐
yeah so frustrating! it's so close to being awesome
lol - I saw a big ol Sony Trinitron CRT at the recycling center and thought of JP.
Wait nine fingers. To cheap for 10 huh
your 10th finger is used to change presets up top ๐
Runs on batteries too. Fun to take on the bus
i found that you can feed the influencer files to https://aiva.ai/ where you can get the midi composition tracks out too
AIVA, the Artificial Intelligence music composer that creates original & personalized music for your projects.
Great workshop again, @haughty quiver ๐
Super! Thanks @haughty quiver !
Thanks @haughty quiver . Have a great weekend everyone!
Thanks JP!
thanks JP
happy Mar 10 aka Mar10
the nintendo direct if you want some mario bros movie direct final trailer
That's awesome, never thought of that. Tomorrow should be Mario Brothers appreciation day.

Good evening.
ooh split keyboard?

@open girder Cyan makes Myst. Built in HyperCard, with help from XCMDs and XFCNs (plugins) to support custom color and video
The address icon looks like a 3DS
Ahhh, I loved HyperCard... started on Logo, then Apple II basic, then to HyperCard.
I remember using HyberCard to make flipbook-style animations.
@open girder I wrote LiveCard in the mid 90s, which enabled publishing HyperCard stacks on the web, with interactivity. Apple licensed it and shipped it with HyperCard for a while.
(HyperCard + LiveCard predated JavaScript.)
what quantity is needed to convince you to make a product
@open girder
CTG, not really a quantity, more like what is useful, interesting, etc.
Live demos are easy until you roll a 1... ๐
I WOULD LIKE AN AD4116 RP2040 BONES BOARD
Thereโs a demon in demonstrate.
@feral mortar thanks, we'll consider it!
will a ADAFRUIT built things if you're willing to pay for the development time
vid out from that!
Will you use the Bones board to make a RP2040 Proto Feather? (I'm not sure if you do that already but if you don't)
geez, that's amazing on a 5"
@feral mortar naw, we do not do consulting/outside engineering
we're going to need benchmarking software for MCU's if this keeps going upwards.
@sand lotus some have done them, but whoever does them always only optimizes for their own boards, so it makes the others not look fast
@feral mortar You might post something on the Adafruit Jobs Board.
@empty swallow probably not! the proto area would be so small, most folks would be better off using our prototyping featherwings
i love the concept of the bones boards, that's going to help new pcb designers so much.
Thats a good idea
That's fair!
the problem with benchmarking on an MCU is by analyzing it you slow it down a little more hehe. it's kind of a paradox.
I would like to use the AD4116 for a high quality 24-bit oscilloscope
What the heck is that antenna O.o
It's the antenna of obedience.
UFL comes unplugged soooo easy if you touch them wrong they'll pop off.
question: Can you solder the plug to the UFL plug so it's permanent?
@sand lotus nope! or at least not recommended
question: i use an edge launch on the RFM featherwing to SMA antenna. could I add an SMA to SMA panel mount or would the extra length mess up the signal? I really don't want to desolder the edge launch they're a chore to desolder.
okeee! thanks all, gotta bounce quick, baby bath time, then bed time for baby, then filming 2 videos we'll be posting soon with some new products that are REALLY neat ๐
@sand lotus will hit that in the chat now
Thanks and good night.
@sand lotus as long as you are using an SMA extender you should not have any signal issues
this is an edge launch connect for those who don't know what it is.
Love to the kiddo and the fam! โค๏ธโค๏ธ
Bye
thank you.
aaaand i just unscrewed my 900mhz antenna and didn't even notice it wasn't ever connected because it's setup exactly as lady ada warned about. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
so my mailbox project is working without the antennas because they're so close to each other... yet would have failed in the field at long distance.
Whoops ๐
a solution to a problem i didn't even realize i had. that's brilliant. thank you lady ada.
DoLA is a great show in that it shows you things you didnโt realize you needed lol
and those antenna's i'm using are now discontinued.

yup it's where the padding is
mine uses the bitmap_label fix
I tested the label PR it looks good to me
(i'm on my phone and playing with my cat)
yeah it's not in real use, stored in a box, so I leave the protection ๐
I also did not test the TTB direction
padding related to text seemed to be the intention of the bitmap label code, but maybe I got that wrong, the label code being wrong made it hard to know what the intention was
because the position is not affected by padding, I considered it better to follow the text (think rotating a label shouldn't change its look by switching padding around)
if you just activate it in the edit menu, it wouldn't change the other keyboard shortcuts
yeah scale is 2 or 3 at the top top
so that the grid scales with it
you can do scale 2, if you have a good eyesight ๐
TTB is label only and UPD (upside down) is bitmap_label only. They could both be ported to each other though
you could override the text property and call super() ?
oh that is a little weird
hello present tim, nice haircut, looking good.
๐ nicely done.
yay
label and bitmap_label override _set_text(), it's part of the subclass API
if _set_text didn't exist, we would have to invent it ๐
Bounding box text scroller.
just designed a small LED pcb that's equivalent to 400 LED's per meter. super dense LED count.
yes straight line, new 2020 sizes.
that's about 50 more LED's per meter than Adafruit's most dense strip. they're using a flexible strip but i'm using SMD on a pcb yes.
i need a hard pcb to mount inside the mailbox so making custom pcb strip "sticks"
the 20W speakers are 12V and the neopixels i'm using don't have that plastic sheath around them... and accidentally touched the 12V speaker terminal with one. only half the strip works now. oops.
that's one reason to always get the neopixel strips with the clear or white sheathing.
when you stuff them inside an enclosure they get wiggly and touch everthing, not good if you've also got 12V stuff in there too. :/
to the core we go
since you've reviewed most of the api examples i'll assume you'll be the one reviewing the steam api pr? it's super simple compared to all the others, should go pretty quick.
if you're interested in knocking out a relatively quick pr
yeah now that there's a fix for the ESP32 workflow issue, the PR to add web workflow to circup can be better tested and looked at
I haven't made time for it yet, but maybe this week
sweet!
i might be able to use web workflow now that i think i've figured out my internet disconnecting issues.
wifi was dropping about 20 times a day.
yeah look at version.json, it should be easy to extrapolate from that
because the router kept restarting due to someone hitting the crap out of it trying to brute force their way in. smart me accidentally setup a public facing port to my router login for remote work and forgot to take it down after.
I tested the steam API example, it would be nice to add comments explaining how to get the steam ID and a steam API key
(I googled it, maybe it's the simplest way)
ah yeah i usually put the developer url to the api docs at least. forgot.
yeah the url could change so probably best i don't include it?
also I like to see code use: with requests.get(...) as response: but most examples don't, so I don't know if it's worth it
yeah developer API docs are the kind of things that tend to change for no reason ๐
i really like the way you shortened the JSON parsing. it's honestly a better way to go. when i eventually update all the API examples with settings.toml i'll see about changing the JSON parsing methods too. really great change Neradoc, appreciate the coding help. ๐
json parsing what ?
First time I submitted the steam api PR, Github completely messed up and was trying to insert really odd changes I didn't make. Probably user error but that was a bit disconcerting.
"a bit disconcerting" is a good, understated, tagline for git
oh i guess it would be a shortened get request response line technically not a JSON parse.
but it ends up being a much slimmer way to do the parsing.
it's better than the default examples everywhere in my opinion and i'll likely be using this new method going forward.
kinda like the first time you learn how to use f-strings. it just makes a little more sense and a better way to go.
oh i was talking about the requests json example neradoc helped write that I used in the Steam API example.
well if you make 2 requests you do them in sequence, not nested
coincidence you're working on json stuff and i'm talking about a different json thing
that's kind of the point, have it auto close the socket
ah, well that sounds like an issue. the socket usually closes with requests from the wifi.radio socket i think. it'll auto close. but a file locally might not.
yeah closing should be automatic
i've never actually parsed a local json file yet. usually work with dicts or lists instead. local JSON is good for logging though.
logging is more a csv thing I would say, json doesn't support "appending" you have to load, modify, write
perhaps that's why i've never done it ๐
i've done .txt appending, basic stuff.
csv sounds like a better idea for exporting
I have youtube being flaky on my side
same looks like we lost em
Welp, apparently there is my answer. ๐ญ Not fixed
No idea how to really troubleshoot it. Everything just freezes during the build sometimes
Gonna call it a day for now.
Thanks for hanging out
thanks for the stream. ๐
Maybe -j 8 is "too much" for it sometimes. I'm going to try with varying degrees of things running or not to see if it's somehow tied to just having a lot going on. Really want to get it figured out though because it will make it impossible to stream core work and kind of difficult to even do the work there off stream

@smoky island do you have a way to confirm that the systemโs RAM is working?
Tough to test the portion of memory thatโs in use.
Iโm not a Linux expert (not even slightly). Wondering if thereโs a boot-up memory test that runs before memory is allocated.
Might be cheaper (faster) to troubleshoot by swapping physical memory cards.
2K is dual channel?
2-kit?
Sounds like the dual channel would be a nice upgrade.
Itโs confusing.
Iโve got to run. Hope your luck holds out!

Hello most excellent person!
Hi all have a good time tonight
Seeing how this thing just spits out text without verification, it should rather be called CheatGPT ๐
"Go Left. Search ground. Divide by zero."
Need to feed the transcript of Show and Tell through to ChatGPT to get a summary of each person's project and then add that and time codes to something
OTOH some AI like https://elicit.org/ will source its affirmations.
we hear you!
you can have a LOT of fun with that chatgpt ... stranger the better
That could make timecodes and summaries of meetings really handy.

Here at Adafruit, we love discovering new and exotic glowing things. Like moths to the flame, we were intrigued by these 'chip on board' ultra-flexible white LED Strips with 480 SMT ...
480 LED's per meter ๐ that's super dense.
anything about 144 per meter is dense. 480 is insane.

The โAdafruit Feather RP2040 with DVI Output Portโ , will it fill a full screen of a HDTV monitor! Or will it be centered and have a โ black boxโ/ frame around it
TV would be 1080P or maybe 4K
Thanks @open girder

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they CAN." - Jurassic Park maybe
Race cars usually do without dash instruments because they are so hard to get working after engine/trans swaps. But the Mini Cooper has a CAN dash which makes it a lot easier to get a dash in a race car. That is what I'm doing in my Civic Time Attack car.

@cyan dagger to switch cameras easily in OBS use the virtual camera with different scenes.
when you join streamyard choose your camera as the virtual camera
then you can switch back and forth between cameras with 1 click by selecting different scenes.
this way you don't have to ask the host (adafruit) to switch your available cameras for you in streamyard. you do that yourself at any time you like using OBS. ๐
OBS is a bit of a bear to get used to but once you get ti rigged .. shazam!

The most modern boards do it all on a single chip running CircuitPython
The original Pong didn't even have a CPU I think. Just 74LS-style parts
Yep. I remember one of the electronics magazines had a Pong game project. I thinkmt he board had a hundred chips on it. A couple months later, Motorola came out with their AY-8 series chips.

Liking the green screen -compatible shirt today, Tim.
the chameleonware shirt
port defaults to 80
yeah I would look if you can call os.statvfs
or the underlying one
yep it would be 0 (block size) times 2 (total blocks), and then theres MB versus MiB but meh
what board are you on ?
you need to close your json
hey all, hope everyone's friday is going well
with a } and no , on the last line
what the code has is concatenating strings with string DEFINES
" string " SOME_STRING " string "
and then %s and %d for the printf
and yeah the drive size is what is expected on a 4MB board without extended mode (which is the default on new boards)
there's some bytes for the bootloader, 1.5MB for CP, 1.5MB for the OTA partition, the remainder for CIRCUITPY
yeah clean is mostly to get new files/imports and new QSTR
maybe the QSTR step is very intensive in file access
clean between builds helps reduce hidden and inconsistent errors though--if stuff suddenly starts behaving oddly in a way that doesn't seem right, or differently than it was just behaving, make clean is a good step for a sanity check
not to say use clean all the time, just when things get wonky I try to remember to clean
(I'm really good and finding wonky)
(afk playing with cats)
what exactly is safe mode?
CP looks for safemode.py if a safemode has occurred. If no safemode has occurred, it first looks for boot.py then code.py (edited for clarity)
you can also invoke safemode programmatically
import microcontroller
microcontroller.on_next_reset(microcontroller.RunMode.SAFE_MODE)
microcontroller.reset()
thank you!! interesting!
good evening โ
i was up all night dreaming of a way to create a 10" subwoofer mailbox
cpython(literal(str)) shouldn't it be that easy?
that was a joke, i just woke up, i have no idea
i have a feeling in the future "have you asked chatgpt" will be the equivalent of "have you tried turning it off and on again"
"it only knows a bunch of words commonly used together with little comprehension" yes you could say a child is like that. they're just parrots when they start off.
that sounds about right
that was: circuitpython/py/obj.h
I think you still need to convert to tho mp object and then:
const char *path = mp_obj_str_get_str(path_o);
pointer magic is an ethereal and confusing space
technically a constant char would be a const. can't a const be a string or int?
hmm well if it's a char yeah i would assume a string
I think it's a char, and const is a limiter on how memory for that char is managed
print before and after? i see you do that a lot to narrow down where something is failing.
You can make all warnings being treated as such using -Wno-error. You can make specific warnings being treated as such by using
-Wno-error=<warning name>where <warning name> is the name of the warning you don't want treated as an error.
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11561261/how-can-i-compile-without-warnings-being-treated-as-errors
That might be what you need?
unused var is generally a bad thing. sometimes it might get set and someday it might not. feeding it a const does usually take care of that but it's bloat yeah.
ohhh the goal is to do it with unused vars... good luck.
you wouldn't want to insert a random / if you're specifically dealing with paths, that's a receipe for bad juju
ohh just a one time use, sorry i came in late. and just woke up, tired.
"keep allocation when vm not running" sounds very generic
*heap ?
anything allocation related is ram yeah
one of the very first circuit python errors i ever got was "malloc" something something. coming from arduino i was like what the heck is malloc. error messages have also gotten better over the years but there are still some really vague ones out there too.
if this has to do with web workflow specifically would it need something like ../ or ./ for relative or absolute pathing?
the safemode message seems to be generated here https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/blob/9c1d83476ebe76c70e409e64a57de3b81e924b49/supervisor/shared/safe_mode.c#L205
first i've seen thelio-mira in your terminal output. looked it up and is that a system76 thelio-mira? that's a super nice pc.
What about using FATFS *fs = filesystem_circuitpy(); like in the static bool _reply() function in the web_workflow.c implementation?
it was working a month ago... "welcome to linux"
where even the smallest dependency error can wreck an entire major module
well for what it's worth i was very impressed with the pc specs. ๐
Whoop! That's awesome!
Hoorray!
for the 512, there must be some literal for the block size (sometimes 1024, etc)
maybe a function already in workflow.c
larger flash sizes have larger blocks
no, not f_stat
yeah it asks with "accept: application/json"
maybe a get or post param
Actually yes, f_stat:
FILINFO fno;
res = f_stat(fs, path_old, &fno);
if (res != FR_OK) {
return res;
}
const response = await fetch(new URL("/fs" + current_path, url_base),
{
headers: {
"Accept": "application/json"
},
credentials: "include"
}
);
you can read the javascript ๐
the Developer Tools isn't showing the headers
it detects the mime types of the files? that's nifty.
you were just on it, search for "request->json"
i imagine if it ends in / it would detect it as a directory?
there has to be a recursion algorithm in there someone then.
recursion for ?
there's logic where if you give a directory with application/json it replies with the list of its content
oh that's neat. i still have yet to use web workflow ๐ฆ
the _reply_directory_json() function does that
or circup, yes i'm bad at this i know
I think you could get the total with something like this:
FILINFO fno;
res = f_stat(fs, path_old, &fno);
if (res != FR_OK) {
return res;
}
@smoky island you are missing /cp/ in the url

A little later than usual, but i'm starting up the stream now. Tinkering with Group sizes in displayio a bit. You can follow along on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD5UmjtIAoM or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Boundry boxes for group collections would be awesome.
I know it's not the focus of your endeavor today, but would be very excited to see displayio.Group and displayio.Palette inherit more list capabilities, particularly things like slicing.
Heyo, hope your saturday is going well all
going to go lurk while I do chores more afk but will be in and out
Would be nice to extract a json structure with the object parameters to walk the tree.
Thinking about more of a database solution.
Thanks -- might be some inspiration in there.
Thinking about something in reverse that extracts the displayio group object properties for database consumption.
Might be easier to walk the tree when in a json format.
Also thinking about polygon bounding boxes -- just to dream the impossible dream.
Thanks!

I've never understood the use for fakerequests. Any idea?
Fake sockets, fake requests, just for testing?
when i first started with simple requests people were like "just use portalbase or pyportal library". After looking at it I realized some people's definitions of a simple test greatly differs from my idea of simple.
the api examples i made for the requests library is more of what i was expecting as a first timer. no overarching dependencies just 1 script, 1 little library, and a json parser. portalbase is probably far more powerful but also way too intimidating for a beginner.
interesting perspective, didn't' think of that
wasn't merged
they all behave the same... featherwing, wiznet boards (onkly diff is max # sockets)
featherwing is 5500
5100 has 4 sockets, 5500 has 8
nicely done ๐. i like how it tells you when the socket is closed.
yep, i just made another cup โ
i think that's why, i've got a hoodie on. yes it gets cold even in FL. it was down to 54F last night.
"cold" ๐
If it's less than 60F I start shivering. We're not used to that kind of weather.
I don't know how you can look at so many diffs and make any sense of it.
I can barely handle 2 and that's usually my own code ๐
When I saw gamblor outside livestreaming during the christmas show & tell I was afraid he'd freeze in place and turn into a popscicle.
I've been going to .env lately. It does work with usb serial now too. Just a matter of updating all of the examples using secrets.
settings.toml
yes that one sorry not env
i like the toml because it's invisible within Mu, you have to open it with notepad++
could be a bad thing for beginners but ultimately i like that it's a hidden file
one looks like it's for microcontroller reset and the other is for different commands?
maybe part of the new safemode stuff?
PR = Pull Request
i associate most of my PR's as Probably Right?
It's like learning a language: hearing the terminology used in context eventually sinks in.
Many of mine are Predictably Remedial.
there's nothing remedial about your code CGrover... some of your stuff blows my mind.
Thanks. Appreciate hearing that. I know I'm farther along than a couple of years ago. I understand more but still have the occasional lucky guess.
that's what I love about the community. Always pushing us to learn more and grow in ways we might not of on our own ๐
all because some conversation or thing someone made inspired us to try something different.

@waxen thistle hello!
It's been a while since I've been able to catch all of ya live, hopefully Lars is forgiving.

Oof, did you get hit by the round of tech layoffs recently?
Not this recent wave, but it was a prelude to the current trend that's going on.
Nah, it's totally fine. I'm happy with the way it played out.
ooof, I'm sorry for that.
I was lucky and my old managers really liked me and wanted me back so just shy of a month out of work

Are you following the new TV shows (Kenobi, Bad Batch, Mandalorian)? They're a real jam.
Iโve been trying to keep up. I realized I hadnโt finished Andor yet, cruising right along with Mando S3, need to watch Bad Batch
And the English dub anime they did too
Patience has rewarded you ๐
Andor! Forgot about that offhand, and it was so well done. And the anime shorts were pretty solid alt-takes of the SW universe.
What a cutie pie! Or is it... a QT Py? This diminutive dev board comes with our favorite lil chip, the SAMD21 (as made famous in our GEMMA M0 and Trinket M0 boards).This time it comes with ...
Iโm thinking about trying to do marvel this summer with my son, one a night
I have two of these I use for testing ideas
So glad theyโre back in stock
I'm sure many years from now, he'll look back upon these times as a really heartwarming experience.
I know, right? I'm a huge fan of boards with a screen built-in, but this is such a small controller -- pop it in, and you're good to go.
Hilariously Iโm making a 0.96โ TFT BFF for it ๐ค
and you can tuck it away in so many small projects, especially where a feather-sized board is way too big
Q: Can you use any of the inputs for capacitive touch? (Edit! Just got the answer! Yes! They are capable!)
I like the QT Py's for small LED projects, great for Halloween projects like stuffing a ton of neopixels in a mask, on a mask, all over your body.
Dangit! What else do I need to get? :)
Great for a tiny mouse wiggler and password entry!
There. More USB cables.
that pink/purple usb cable sits within arm's reach -- it's one of my favorites
One of the most underrated feature is the 5V out for Neopixels at full power. You don't get that with most feathers.
The 5V makes the neopixels a little brighter.
Love the original QT Py. If I didn't already have like 20 I'd buy 10 right now lol
And hopefully, Seesaw will be worked on once again. AND you can stick Klipper on it to have an aux switches and LEDs board.
What are the big PCBs you have over on the bench?
I picked up 2 just for future Halloween projects.
can you talk a bit about power consumption?
You don't need wifi for everything, this does fill a nice place where you just want a small MCU for basic uses.
Q; What was the insulating tape called? I couldn't quite get the name.
The battery BFF is almost mandatory for all QT Py's in my opinion for wearables. They're awesome.
Kapton Tape
it's a yellow-ish, heat resistant tape that's used quite a bit with soldering
Is your QT Py all alone, lacking a friend to travel the wide world with? When you were a kid you may have learned about the "buddy" system, well this product is kinda like that! A ...
The charger BFF is also worth getting for any QT Py.
Keep it real...

We either die in simulation or in real life, and thereโs no way to ever know which it is
Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are here (or are they?) to investigate if we're living in a simulation. Chuck wonders if a simulation universe has anything to do with us not being able to travel at the speed of light. You'll learn about ...
My favorite video on the topic ๐

Cloudy and warm here in the upstate
I tend to agree with the feeling Tyson has, it makes me feel more comfortable that thereโs a 50:50 shot of being the real thing or a simulation.
