Hehe

#

holding breath

#

Just over a minute without trying hard DX

#

But man that mermaid tail is cool

sand lotus
#

I'd rather have a print statement that says "Button does not exist for this device"

#

I always encounter "Bus in use" errors which are actually very helpful to let me know I'm doing something wrong.

inner spade
#

Include a list of available buttons in the error message — or the way to find them.

sand lotus
#

That's a good idea too. Let it trigger something like a dir(board) automatically.

#

That might actually be helpful for CP to do that if you name a pin wrong. Like if you try to use D10 on a Pico with GP10 naming scheme.

#

Yes that's what I meant. I think that would be helpful to add to CP core to have it print out dir(board) if it detects that module attribute error.

#

like a helper because a beginner isn't going to know what the heck that error means.

#

though i also understand the capacity crunch the developers are constantly under, like Atlas trying to lift the world with no overhead.

#

yeah lol developers are like ohh a new bigger board and more RAM. let's add more frozen modules.... aaaaaaand it's all gone.

#

how will you deal with joysticks x,y coordinates. some game controllers have multiple joysticks too. joy_x1, joy_y1?

#

I mean naming them because i didn't see a naming convention in the dict for joysticks

ornate bay
#

The use of super() may be slightly different than CPython - last I remember the use of self with it when working with CPY builtins, I think I ran into something when multi-subclassing

#

But it was only for builtins, worked as expected with non-builtins

#

Not sure if that's changed since

inner spade
#

I’ve converted joystick positions into up/down/left/right button values.

#

Ran into some limitations subbing list. Not all dunders were available. Don’t know if dict has the same issue.

sand lotus
#

current progress on the tr-cowbell enclosure. will have a flat faceplate to mount stuff.

#

2"x6", thinking that might not be big enough if someone wants to put on a larger display.

inner spade
#

Could the collar flare out and project over the rear of the enclosure?

#

To accommodate a large display?

sand lotus
#

off the backend perhaps, could also make it taller with a steeper angle to increase the size.

#

FoamyGuy what's the largest size display you might want to put on there?

#

The TFT featherwing is 2.5"x3", that's the biggest one I have, so maybe I'll try for 3"

#

i should have thought about this before i started printing parts lol

#

Titano seems to be about the same size as the TFT featherwing. I think that's about as large as anyone would normally use. These files are going to be shared on github eventually so want to make something that someone can just print without needing modification.

#

The seesaw uses I2C address 0x49

#

There's only 1 device that's hard coded with 0x49 a light sensor, all others have changeable addressing.

inner spade
sand lotus
#

That's a nice display

#

yeah i like that one, good fit. yes it's got eyespi.

inner spade
#

Bigger displays can introduce bigger delays, too.

sand lotus
#

good point

#

I think past Tim has some videos on debugging hardfaults 🙂

inner spade
#

(Just spent an inordinate amount of time with every Adafruit TFT display for the VCO module project.)

sand lotus
#

ok why? you can't just spit that out there without explaining why you would do that to yourself.

#

that would be evil lol. aaaand start... why is my board resetting?

#

almost as bad as having a keyboard with a help button that does nothing

inner spade
#

Was looking for the maximum size/resolution display for a narrow rack module. Was a balancing act of available PCB real estate and design proportions. And of course I only wanted a circle to show, so the orientation and margins were tricky.

sand lotus
#

they make round i2c displays now

#

i don't think they come in many different sizes though

inner spade
#

Yeah, but didn’t want to mess with writing drivers. Finally settled on the 1.54-inch; very close to a square.

sand lotus
#

good display, has sd card and eyespi unless you're talking about using the barebones display

inner spade
#

Self-imposed design constraints. 🤔

#

Animating the dial will be fun.

sand lotus
#

well that's getting really fancy

#

looks fantastic. i don't know anything about eurorack stuff.

#

Adafruit just updated their .96" display, low cost spi display

inner spade
#

Eurorack is pretty handy ‘cause of the built-in power supplies and standard formats/interconnects. Can get pretty spendy, so I prefer to make my own modules.

sand lotus
#

are those vector fonts? that's sick.

#

looks like it's setting the pixels manually by row and flipping pixels

inner spade
#

If the result is a bitmap, should be possible to convert to a font, as well.

sand lotus
#

yeah looks like some type of pixelbuf manipulation, very cool.

#

nice, good contribution. i just saw someone string like 10 of them together to show unix time counting up. think it was micropython but a cool use case.

Just watching the baby Einstein tear down. We have adapted hundreds of those for AT switches. Just add a 3.5mm jack in parallel with the single switch and kiddos without effective use of hands and fingers can use them. Maybe @proper trench can show how to add on in a future episode 🙂

#

If you make a replacement board could you add pins/card edge/jst connectors for the switches?

wind spoke
#

Maybe a question for "Ask en Eng." tonight:
Is a Pi CowBell AirLift possible (and desirable). Also does the smallest ESP32 fit on a pico size board?
My usecase is not really wifi as that is possible with PicoW, but maybe BLE (not possible yet) and even more interesting for me is the BluePad32 that permit the connection of all kind of bluetooth joystick.

upper sandal
#

yeah the ESP32 pico mini module (aptly named) would fit

wind spoke
upper sandal
#

(the one on the ESP32 feather V2)

wind spoke
#

I have the AirLift FeatherWing too... so I could at least prototype that. It is an answer to the #CircuitPython2023 that wanted PS4 joystick support in CircuitPython for the PicoW.

upper sandal
#

actually the itsy bitsy airlift is thinner that a raspi pico

#

so not stackable but small enough

#

is there z shapped pins, like 2 right angles to add or remove one row of width ?

wind spoke
#

I have not followed all the Pi CowBell that LadyAda has already done or had plan to do...

wind spoke
upper sandal

note, it's probably best to not stack radio antennas, but put them side by side

sand lotus
#

i love that chip for the I2S breakout module. it's a great one. anytime i do audio i reach for one of those adafruit breakouts first.

teal river
#

What is I2S anyway?

sand lotus
#

serial audio. i think of it as "I2C for Sound" so I2S.

teal river
#

ahh

sand lotus
#

the protocol was specifically designed for sound

#

i've played with different audio out methods in circuit python. pwmout does work but it's glitchy. I2S is really the only way to get reliably quality sound.

#

having I2C built into the I2S chip means digital volume control, mute, etc.. not all I2S chips come with that so they're extra features that are nice to have.

#

5 band EQ ohhhh. that'll make audio react FFT projects possible. Ummm heck yes. 👍

teal river
#

AdaToys? A line of Adafruit baby/kid toys that are all open source and hackable?

sand lotus

If parents could customize sounds with drag & drop to an SD card I think that would be easiest and most probable method.

strong acorn
upper sandal
#

it's an SBC if you feel in your heart that it's an SBC

#

the true SBC was the friends we made along the way

sand lotus
#

i think we're going to look at back at non-internet connected vintage PC's as word processors.

#

seems the delineation today is "does it have a web browser"

#

but you can surf the internet with get requests and web scraping alone so i'm not even sure if that holds true either.

strong acorn
#

$6 PicoW is a prety capable internet device

upper sandal
#

and it plays doom

teal river
#

And it can be a web server

sand lotus
#

The YouTube.be share link doesn’t actually embed it on my tablet.

teal river
#

Same on my phone

sand lotus
#

just checked on my PC and it shows up as embedded and works fine. doesn't work that way on my tablet. forces me to open youtube's app.

teal river
#

Apps are weird

sand lotus
#

so i'm forced to flip flop back and forth between youtube and discord if i want to chat. it pauses the live stream in youtube if discord is open. so to watch again i have to unpause the stream and scrub to the end to get back to a real time live stream.

teal river
#

Oof… I forgot about that, I’m spoiled with Premium and can play in the background

sand lotus

#

i hate subscription model stuff.

teal river

Yeah, Premium is their subscription. No ads, background play, and YouTube Music

upper sandal

I mean it should be a standard feature for sure, I think it is in the twitch app ?

teal river

sand lotus

#

Yeah it does picture in picture with the twitch app

teal river
#

Good guy Twitch

sand lotus
#

This is much better, thank you.

upper sandal
#

I don't know if there was another solution

sand lotus
#

I think the LED glasses were designed to use the NRF52840 driver board. Maybe there was something specific at that time that needed it?

upper sandal
#

the glasses class uses the C module that is only available on the driver board

sand lotus
#

does it have current sensing in milliamps perhaps?

#

i could see needing to keep an eye on the current draw as a helpful thing for a face full of electronics project.

sand lotus
#

yes i linked to the driver board product above

upper sandal
#

is31fl3741_pixelbuf uses that module

#

see the type of is31 ?

sand lotus
#

i imagine you should be able to use it with other MCU's but again originally i think it was designed to be used with that specific driver board when it was initially released.

upper sandal
#

that's the module I linked in the support matrix above

sand lotus
#

i got 2 of them during one of JP's pick of the week. cheaper way to score an NRF52840 for BLE projects. didn't get the glasses only the driver board for it. figured i could use it for something else someday.

upper sandal
#

I don't know what it does, that library is mysterious 🤷

sand lotus
#

looked up IS31FL3741 on digikey, it's just a PWM LED driver chip.

upper sandal
#

yep, with many pins

sand lotus
#

looks like it's used with most charlieplexed projects, basically a charlieplex driver.

upper sandal
#

IS31FL3741 and IS31FL3731 are used by Adafruit

#

too many different APIs, let's invent a new standard !

sand lotus
#

that meme is true though

upper sandal
#

yes

#

RAINBOW is a list of tuples

#

but it shouldn't use rainbow

#

t[0]<<16 + t[1]<<8 + t[2]

#

for hex to tuple I do:

t = tuple((color).to_bytes(3, "big"))
#

converts an int into 3 bytes

#

and the opposite is, but it assumes ints

color = int.from_bytes(bytes(t), "big")
sand lotus
#

Why is something looking for a literal string ‘circuit python’ seems odd.

strong acorn
#

there's a displayio text scroller for the LED glasses that relies on the built-in module. The built-in module seems to be only shared-module, no nrf-port-specific code, so presumably it could be enabled for other ports with enough space to allow displayio on the single 13x9.

upper sandal
#

that sets each LED individually

#

it sets a red LED or a blue LED, etc.

#

Adafruit_RGBMatrixQT.pixel_addrs(x,y) gives you the individual LED numbers of pixel (x,y)

strong acorn
#

I'm not sure what the missing link is for full-on displayio, I'm not familiar with all the matrix and framebuffer code

upper sandal
#

yeah it's a mess, I think we need to look at all those APIs

wind spoke
#

Hi, I missed the beginning, but I have contributed to that library a little bit... (I believe).

#

Maybe to add support for Pimoroni board.

#

Maybe also for the LED SHIM from Pimoroni... and I was ask to make a buffer something.

#

And I did not knew how to. It is a 28 RGB LED strip.

#

I wanted to run the LED animation on it, but it needed something I did not knew how to make.

#

Also, maybe there was the suggestion to split the library into one per hardware/card... or at least on python file per board so that you don't waste memory by loading everything.

#

So what hardware do you have at hands? The multi-color 13x9, the LED Glass, ... what else?

upper sandal
#

hey I made comet run

#

though the color order is wrong

#

the colors are weird though

#

I just copied the code

#

wasn't it the issue where we need RTD to update the module to use the new settings ?

#

because it was created before a certain date

#

IS31FL3741_PixelBuf's _transmit calls is31.write()

#

that's just the internal API of IS31FL3741_PixelBuf

#

so it expects an object (the builtin one) with a write() function that does the real display of the thigns

#

(it's the PixelBuf API, the real sending of data to the neopixel/dotstars is done in _transmit that gets passed a buffer)

wind spoke
#

Maybe "In the Weed" that topic...

#

If you can summarize it.

sand lotus
#

All over my head.

wind spoke
#

One thing, is that the LED SHIM is linear...

upper sandal
#

so: animations call show(), which calls _transmit(), which in IS31FL3741_PixelBuf calls write() on the passed IS31FL3741 object

wind spoke
#

Matrix are 2D.

#

And LED annimation are all linear (is it?).

#

WLED has a 1D and 2D animation... maybe that could be inspiration for LED animation?

upper sandal
#

yeah we should be able to do it at a lower level

wind spoke
#

The note say it is Katni hosting...

modern night
#

Thanks for the stream!

wind spoke
#

Will miss the meeting. But working on some notes.

sand lotus
#

Thanks, complicated stuff. Good stuff.

upper sandal
#

@smoky island for later, I got it to work by adding write() to the root IS31FL3741 class without using a temp_buffer, instead of the RGBMatrixQT subclass (which is only used to create the LED mapping).
That being said it then works with an RGBMatrixQT too, since it's a subclass, and I don't think it's notably different.

strong acorn
#

Scrolling text on a 13x9 is31fl3741 using a simplistic adaptation of the technique from the 5x5 BFF lean guide. Would really love it if there were abstractions to make these smaller displays into displayio.Displays.

upper sandal
#

using a buffer class that has __setitem__

strong acorn
#

where does the font come into play?

upper sandal
#

I stick with the default

#

actually I don't know what formats it accepts

strong acorn

teal river

Oh, yeah, I wanted to make a logic analyzer!

cinder wind
#

yeah that's the most frustrating thing: some neopixels work great when powered at 5.0V and signaled at 3.3V. But will not work at 5.25V and signaled at 3.3V. So could be a project works with a long USB cable (which drops the voltage down to ~5V) but does not work with a short USB cable (gives the 5.25V from the USB power supply)

sand lotus
#

Scott showed some interest in maybe using it for a logic analyzer. Looking forward to seeing what he does. I think cgrover might be interested in it too.

I've been thinking that the PIO might be able to gather ( and maybe compress ) data quite quickly - not sure if anyone has done that yet (for logic analysis )

I don't think the CircuitPython NeoPxl8 library has dithering and gamma-correction yet, so if you notice a difference in behavior when going between Arduino & CircuitPython, that's why

sand lotus
#

Who was playing with dithering? Gamblor for his xmas strip matrix i think. Maybe he was using DMA or PIO?

cinder wind

yeah would need to use DMA, not sure how that's possible w/ PIO in CircuitPython. But it's how it's done in Arduino

sand lotus

Question: I’ve noticed some display breakouts have the ribbon go around the edge to the back, some have the ribbon stay on the same side under the display (usually soldered), some fold behind and go thru a hole in the middle of the board… how do you choose which design to go with?

#

Mmm that one is nice too

Some QUESTIONS related to EYESPI:

  • Is there (or plan for) any Feather or Metro or Pi Cowbell with EYESPI connector?
  • Can I use two EYESPI Breakout Board and a cable to go from A to B between boards?
