@haughty quiver are the switches for your MIDI controller momentary contact? I want to make a budget version
I have the tactile switch party pack!
sorry really need sleep, n8!
@teal river Maybe these ($2.50 for 10):
I'll probably use these since I have them https://www.adafruit.com/product/4184
And colors
Yeah for Eurorack modules, I've been wanting to build something like Ochd but based on a ItsyBitsy and outputs musically-related LFOs
that would be fantastic
Bai JP! Good show!
great show, thanks @haughty quiver !
Thanks JP
Oh thatโs a real bargain!!
Zorba the Geek!
I know right?!?! I'm not afraid I'll run out now XD
Thanks, @haughty quiver !
thanks everyone!
Thanks yโall for a great chat!
Thanks JP!

Feels like a gap. Got so used to watching JP on Thursday.
It's temporary. ๐
Will it go back to JP on Thursday when AaE returns?
{color:#08x}
since hex is a string, 8 is the total length of "0x000000"
so simplified, it's f"{color:#08x}"
As far as I understand it, yes. I'll check into it, specifically, though, and that's not true, I will post an update. Otherwise, assume that's the case. ๐
Yay!
Foamyguy is wrapping up the gradient helper live on YouTube and Twitch right now...
I would join but Iโm watching Battle Bots with my parents ๐ ๐
Well this is riveting, but no flames or saw blades.
... working on documentation for the guitar pedal refresh and PaletteSlice tonight.
Thanks for the stream @smoky island! Time for a late dinner over here.
๐
๐ been up since last night working on 3D modeling and printing, might fall asleep
Adafruit microcontrollers

First batch of TR-Cowbells went out yesterday. They will be arriving at their destinations either on Monday or Tuesday depending on distance from FL. Got them out by Christmas, very happy about that.
Sequenced cowbell holiday carols can happen now.
Try:except:else is pretty handy.
I occasionally overuse it.
Hiii
Try except almost mandatory for working with requests library and api. Super handy with requests because every API has their own failure messages. You can catch each failure and do something different with. Very useful for hammering away until you start getting actual key:value pair errors.
I'm catching up on 2x... about 15 minutes behind, lol
Silly question... what's a "state machine"?
Ethernet featherwings are nice to have just in case something breaks again in a future beta might be a handy fail-over. Yes theyโre faster but sometimes you canโt run ethernet everywhere, mailboxes for example. I could see wippersnapper being a great pair for always online logging because all WiFi drops eventually. No WiFi has 100% uptime.
Used finite state machine designs in my hardware projects, too. A great way to organize and manage sequential events. The hardware implementations exist in the core of CPU chips.
I think anecdata did the 4 qt pys from 1 outlet. I havenโt seen the one youโre talking about with 3 different connection types but that sounds cool. Could just run all 3 from LTE.
I think I understand state machines
Yeah anecdata and few others are all over the WiFi stuff. I helped with a couple beta tests. Really neat progress lately combining the low power stuff with WiFi.
Handy to think of slices like ranges with (stop, start, step)
0xAA00AA
Purple does get kinda lost between pink and blue
catching up... (2) ethernets, (2) wifis https://gist.github.com/anecdata/8152eba03eefd0a587747e551c683543
Do you have a definition somewhere for how many pixels should be THE color?
That dooes look better
Do you have diffusion plastic? might help it not look as blown out
Sheets of white paper might help
oop, lol
Dropping the overall brightness can help
Yeah, on top with cranked brightness might help... but it doesn't really matter what we see XD as long as you know it works
Oh yeah, that looks even better
I was on a 7 alpha 5 board having issues earlier XD
oops, I'm late
On a Feather RP2040
Yes, you're a little late, lol
Actually I was on 7 alpha 4, lol
My issue was related to libraries being ancient
Heya! What you up to to tonight, @smoky island
yay!
Higher brightness the yellow was more obvious, lower brightness a lot more looks white on both sides
Colors are wild
0.02 brightness looked really patchy
one day some company will produce cameras that can show leds accurately, and they will make a fortune on maker youtubers
you can pop from the end and insert it at 0
or the other way around
Sorry. -1 is reverse the list
L.append(L.pop(0))
Hi Tim and all present. I'm a bit late. Was preparing a post on M5Stack Community forum about a M5Stack board package for Arduino which Version name caused a compile error because of a '+' character in the version name.
it's slow because you are copying the whole thing
Change the color list to start and stop with the same color to make it smoother
the efficient way to do it is to use a ring buffer
you could keep the list as is, and only increment the index, and then do: pixels[index:] = bezier_colors[:total-index]; pixels[:index] = bezier_colors[total-index:]
if you make bezier_colors a memoryview, then it's practically free
Cat wants more attention XD
you have the same number of pixel update operations, but you don't have the cost of popping and appending
a pop(0) is O(n), because it has to move all the elements
though it's in C, so probably fast anyways
Are there use cases where the background isnโt black?
I have 11 of the NeoPixel BFF... what should I do with them? I realized making a 5x5 pixel game is kinda beyond my scope right now
For example if you wanted a gradient blueish comet traveling around a solid red heart, like โglimmering.โ
Cool
Thanks!
goodnight
good night Thanks Tim
Starting up for the morning stream now, working on some more mulit-colored led animations. Follow along on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYOBISQOCMU or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
๐โ
Rather than iterating through the values, are you considering putting them in a numpy array and applying .interp once?
(Or am I late to the discussion?)
good morning โ
After 22 versions finally got a step switch cap 3D print to work right the first time. Minor victory. Feel like I've been living in fusion 360 and cura for the past couple days.
One of the neat things about Fusion 360 is it automatically increments your file saves as new versions. Imagine if pycharm did that how many iterations of ctrl+s would you have per project. It's both a neat feature but also i'm just like "i really don't want to know how inefficient I am thanks" ๐
Itโs been interesting to watch the progress โ no 3D printing or laser cutter experience here. I still machine/fabricate by hand cause itโs great stress therapy. Although I use CAD for most designs.
Thank you. It's just 1 small piece in a much larger project.
i often use beep beep language but only when i hurt myself
there's gotta be someone who's already done a morse code encoder/decoder for python, CP dunno.
a morse code library sounds appealing for a doomsday device. encoding is super easy, decoding something you pick up from airwaves is harder.
maybe i'll build one for my LORA project whenever i get back around to that one.
communicating morse code via LORA seems quite redundant though lol
i know some ham radio gear uses Morse code for status or alerts
round() is already a circuitpython module
Havenโt been able to see the entire map_range formula, but I suspect itโs just doing a ratio factor.
Usually the case when x_min and y_min both = 0
Yeah, in_min and out_min = 0 ( I was using slope-intercept nomenclature)
Try (colors / tail_len) * n
instead of map_range
They make rechargeable mice now. Can use it while recharging with the cord.
(not at my computer or Iโd do some tests off-line)
Well you have been coding more, or at least streaming more.
which is appreciated, helps fill in the gap some as schedules have shifted around temporarily.
all wireless mice are like that, especially ones on non-rechargeable batteries.
one of the best wireless mouse i owned i got from a big lots for literally $4 while i was on vacation. worked so well ended up using as my full time mouse for years.
BTW, the 0{8} in the f string format statement for hex can just be 08
alright i'm out for the day, thank you for streaming. i have things to print and code to mangle. ๐
๐ Hello everyone.
and hello everyone from me
Will this replace the gradients in the Fancy LED library?
cool
I've only used it for building color palettes.
Thanks for the stream!
Thanks, @smoky island !

hi there!
โ ๐
๐๐ง
howdy!
Such a good jam
may the lars be with you
Hello
I keep forgetting NeoPixels are supposed to be 5V logic and use them with 3.3V microcontrollers... oop
โ the page mentions that you can use itsy bitsy short female headers for easy mounting/removing, but you have to trim to 7 pins. How easy/difficult is it to trim headers?
The pin side is easy, just snip between pins. The socket side is still pretty easy, but you always lose a pin with regular header sockets
Do you just use some heavy snippers to cut through the plastic?
I wish there were a way to save the current cart for later or a "buy now" to skip the cart for a particular item like this... even better would be if you could order but have it held to add to a big order on Wednesday XD
Move Every Sig!
Yup, and then you can use snippers or sanding paper to make it fine on the end if you want
Thank you so much for the response!
No problem :D
Just make sure you wear eye protection! Sometimes part of it will fly off
Create new wishlist?
They like to SNAP
yes, what @teal river said. I also use needle-nose pliers to pull out the socket position that will be sacrificed on a cut so I'm only snipping through plastic
Unfortunately there's no way to dump the current contents of the cart into a wishlist
Even if I minify it for my dragon skull mask I'd still use the 3 wire connector, it just makes everything easier.
This isn't a bad idea. I usually just have the pin fall out [usually my snips go between the pin's tongue things]
Do you not have?
Just picked up 4 because I'm always doing LED projects. Thanks JP. Don't forget to get the 3 wire plug with it (sold separately and not discounted)
I think the 3 wire plug should have been discounted with it.
JP -- what's the advantage of this vs. just driving directly [aside from the removable 3-pin connector]?
lars just drive neopixels with mind
It's Tuesday and the end of the day XD

i missed that post, can't wait to hear how things about going for the new parents. looking forward to the announcements.

great collaborative project.
This how I experience the world - all the time. ๐
It happens to me a lot... especially as I get older...
Understood.
I really like those colors, it reminds me of 80s for some reason
Actually, I had an IBM PC from '86 with that color inside the plastic
is there supposed to be a space between them for even spacing? i put them right next to each other. never thought to measure.
both ears!
There's also a hiss on the audio, but not sure if you can do anything about that
STEREO!
I remember those things, @teal river
wow what a difference
Yes, you're supposed to have a space between your ears. ๐
i meant between the 14 segment displays :/
I know. ๐
The space between my ears is full of mushy goop
Mine comes out my nose.
onose!
yeah the wippersnapper blinking every couple minutes is obnoxious if it's always sitting right in front of you

Squeek squeek
Looks gray on the downshooter...
Color is hard
True
oh what should you use as lubricant with PLA or PETG?
Everything is greyed on the downshooter, not just the owl XD
It's probably color correcting because of the benchtop color.
Maybe, or it just isn't as vibrant and doesn't try any correction

Lawnmower!
I'm probably going to set my Printables bookmark straight to the Adafruit brand page there now. That way it actually becomes kind of like a homepage while on printables.
You just gave me the best Christmas present. I've been working on a Raspberry Pi HD Camera microscope and I need a stand. I can make an attchment for my solder press to hold my camera/lens!
aww that's adorable
What kind of paint works well on filament because that's some slippery stuff.
hah shoe with shoes
Shoe with shoes XD
Then shoes with shoes with shoes
12' printed standing tree challenge
shoes with shoes would make for a cool binary tree
Who's Rezz?
ah
Remember not to call them Lego or the Lego group will get mad XD
awesome, looks great for gears
that would be awesome for a automated telescopic mast project, antennas on cars used to work that way.
Add a gear for a motor and the tree can go up and down automatically!
or like a ballerina music box, spinning tree topper, lot of possibilities, didn't know that was possible, great stuff!
Infinite possibilities with enough imagination!
A giant one could have messages added into the rings, or you could have cavities for LEDs and such and have it do a lightshow
add a stop switch at top/bottom of travel and can automate it.
didn't know there was a lightsaber did that, same idea.
a full scale, like 9 foot version would be so heavy you'd need nema 23's ๐
XD

@sand lotus that's an ambitious project for someone new to 3d printing! kudos for seeing it through.
I love the mixed colors!

good crickit idea
beautiful magazine
@robust horizon I remember reading magazines like that when I was a kid and it really kicked off my interest in computers / electronics
try pushing a magazine today with schematics... it's just not the same, it wouldn't work.
Great projects tonight folks!
A project to continue! I would recommend set up your patterns as options in a simple web portal. I can help if you like!
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.

thank you for hosting Liz. Happy Holidays everyone. ๐
Thanks to all for sharing their time with us
@split gazelle thanks for hosting? Great projects all!
@teal river I'll drop a note here when I get it scanned. Will try to do it over the holiday week-end. Did you mean the schematic in particular?
Merry holidays!
That's a good idea!
Great projects everyone
Yay! Yes, the schematic in particular, but the whole thing is cool! And no rush, I wonโt be able to think about trying to build it until after new years, lol
I do not see a scan on archive.org with an obvious search so it's definitely on the list to do a little preservation
i think someone built a robot like that for the google game where it presses the space bar automatically.
Itโs super simple to get a web page running on the Pico :D you could also have physical buttons on a controller if you like. Options are good
wouldn't be surprised if it was a short-lived magazine
I think there were a lot of those
electronics advance and things get kinda obsolete
old woodworking magazine though... will never become obsolete. i used to read those as a kid.
other bonus of the pico-w is getting the time from adafruit.io or similar. Could do the same on an esp32 family but I do not think the neopixel library there DMA (but could be wrong)
Woodworking is an eternal art
we can 3d print wood now though
yeah. i wouldn't want to 3d print a canoe
Lol
Hello
though people have done it with massive industrial 3d printers
Industrial 3D printing can probably do things that are technically superior to hand-made things, but that doesnโt make them inherently better
Hi Dave
has anyone actually tried chaining Noods together? i haven't because i think Lady Ada said it would require a higher power supply?
Double the noods, double the power
voltage drop perhaps or over current? unsure and don't think i want to risk damaging my noods but i'll do it for science if no one else has.
well if you think of each nood like a 2-pin LED and you chain them together there will be more current and voltage drop yeah.
... from the nOOds Uberguide:
Well, voltage will definitely drop if the power supply canโt handle itโฆ but also if the LEDs are in series themselves, they might not like the current across them
And then thereโs this XD
hmm, i had a project in mind but would require 3 noods in series
for a wearable, i guess a 9v battery would work but i'd prefer something rechargeable.
Or hide some very small wires in the assembly.
I'm on a android. Is there anyway to watch the video while staying in Discord?
You could do the grounds in series and a single wire per nood to 3V and parallel
not that i know of, you have to switch back and forth :/
unless someone embeds the YT video in chat... that could work?
Does your phone support multitasking? I know the Pixels you can do side by side of two apps; you go to the app switch mode, tap the icon at the top of the app and you should get a split screen option

always epic when people share outdoor projects
We have hit -30c each night since friday
Youโre gonna LOVE my roof project
it isn't even that windy so -20c isn't too bad! Sorta ha
I need to move to Canada
Glad I hadnโt moved to Ventura yet XD I can skip that pain
congrats to Jepler for getting all the next stuff working together. the keyboard wizardry continues.
Gonna have to replay the video.
I thought he said something about Dave & his mechanical keyboard. I doubt he was talking about me as I still need a UV 3D printer to make my custom keycaps and the parts fir the case.
I can install my Pico W-based door lock and work on the code with it in place, yay!
the adafruit newsletter, blog/rss is just amazing. easily the best news feed i have, by far.
With the wind factored in, it feels like -30c
My only complaint is thereโs too much awesome, I canโt keep up!
Yay AdaBox!
great collaboration with liz and the ruiz brothers on the 14 segment display project.
is that the same cloud pattern from the MagTag kit?
Great Liz work on the pixel art!
i modeled it up in fusion but it is a similar cumulous shape
oh and kattni helped too, neat collaboration.
I'm gone back in time to where he was talking about Show&Tell
I need to collaborate with someone
having the pico in wippersnapper is awesome.
great job Brent Rubel and team!
i'm kinda geeking out seeing my board sitting on JP's desk. been working on it for months. it's so nice to see it in someone else's hands.
Iโm making a wire man with a NeoBFF face!
adorable

why didn't you go on show and tell and show him off?
works in progress are absolutely cool too
Heโs not done and I got home late XD
Barely made the showโฆ and Iโm exhausted and staying up late for this, currently in bed
Oops, I hot swap I2C a lotโฆ
same, i live dangerously. honestly didn't realize you should power off the board
note to self, I2C is not hot pluggable
Yes Bluetooth on WiFi one of the new boards has BLE but it's not yet supported in firmware
same, I2C crashes a lot when you plug them in
She types faster than me
Lol
they're dangerous, wouldn't trust them JP: "sounds perfect"
ohh a battery charger conversion project?
Adapters work, but arenโt as fun as a pack rebuild :P
wow those are huge
i have some dewalt 18v's for my tools but they're like 1/4 that size.
I have Ryobi 18v, similar sizes
just checked the biggest one i have is 18V 6.0AH
I forget what mine are and Iโm in bed, so not checking XD
and it was a knock off kinda because official dewalt stuff costs ๐ช and a ๐ฆต
Maybe thereโs a boost module in the adapter?
that all happened much faster than expected
This project really sucks!
good way to keep tools out of the landfill
i was expecting some kind of voltage regulator bodge
You can also get adapters that turn your tool batteries into battery banks! Also for all ecosystems
i have to go back and watch because it happened so fast i missed it.
ohh that'll help during hurricanes
I have a cheaper clone of that vacuum that only does 15-30 minutesโฆ I kinda want to make an adapter for tool batteries myself
will look into that, thank you
Cgrover โค๏ธ brilliant person who doesn't get enough credit. this is very nice to see.
his work on displayio alone has advanced circuit python graphics considerably this year
i tried using user pages on day 1 and so many features were broken i couldn't use it. had to do documentation on github instead. will look into it again.
Thanks for sharing the guide, @haughty quiver. Hope that having the documentation available means that more of these unique pedals stay out of the boneyard.
check out this guide from Anne: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-learning-system-user-pages
also bug reports are always welcome for new stuff
oh i reported a ton of bugs, will have to revisit and see if they were all fixed.
GhostCARS
the way JP approached his LCARS project was really creative.
It works nicely now; no bugs experienced whilst writing two guides.
Cleanup on aisle LARS.
Lol
If you could figure out how t add capacitive touch, you could make a fully functional interface!
you know what that panel could really use... a big help button. ask Jepler how to add one. ๐
ohhh didn't know they sell them pre-crimpled!!!
JP please make a guide on how to make those kinds of custom cables.
The display flat cables are the same as large-sized Eurorack power cables (16-pin).
Niiiice
oh that's nice
So cool!
Plans for capacitive touch?
Canโt wait to see it finished!
Very cool display. Nicely three-dimensional, too.
very legible
Maybe have an archive on Adafruit where people can post scans of any old or new products they buy. I miss the days when alot of manuals actually had the circuit diagram in them
Right now it looks like the computer is having issues after the ship was damaged
the black fascia really does make it look super clean
Fair enough. Two small wires behind the cells in a matrix?
breadboard wires?
Wire wrap wire
Maybe make a copy of that LCARS panel so you can do complications on a replica after the original display is finished
ahh didn't know those were in the store
Better yet, use painted electromagnetic wire and just sand where you need a touch point.
๐
You can't do the New Products segment without singing the New nEw neW jingle. ๐ถ
I have those in my cart!
they're like auto splicers, neat idea
JP desires to break the law!

Happy Friday also Tim and all present
Hello from Sweden. One hour to Christmas!
Also you can't have comments in Jsons. In toml you can?
# comment
I think you can do octal
"011 is 9, not 11"
"Only integers supported by strtol. (no 0o, no 0b, no underscores 1_000, 011 is 9, not 11)"
I'm gonna try to follow when you are using your HDD and when your changing files on the device. We talked about this before, where to develop your code, and the reasons for not doing it on the device. Its very hard to follow all your clicks, would you mind pointing out when you're on HDD, when you transfer it to device and when you develop on the device?
Octal was very useful when working with a front panel manually-operated boot loader switch array on minicomputers like the DEC PDP series.
wifi.radio.ipv4_address (corrected)
if you have more than one web workflow device, circuitpython.local may point to any of them
if you know the MAC address, you can probably guess at the other mDNS name and access the device that way
sorry yes v4
disable your HTTPS everywhere
yes, only HTTP, no HTTPS
I think it's on by default in Mozilla, maybe chrome too
clear caches or new private window
http://192.168.1.132 should get to the "Welcome" page
web workflow was added to Pico W in beta.5 (using .env)
web workflow works with TOML in beta.6
it sometimes takes a while for the web workflow pages to come up
I see you're wearing mittens Tim. Is it really colder in the States than here in Sweden, not even a thousand miles from Santa's home?
Well maybe not mittens, hard to code with mittens
You might have better luck using the hostname.
IP address I think is most direct... hostnames have to get translated
Minus 11 Celsius
-5ยฐF here in Chicagoland, "feels like" -29ยฐF ...worse in the more northern states
have you ever tried my app for web workflow ? I haven't had time to work on it lately, but I'd love to know your opinion, though it's possibly annoying to launch on linux as you need node
it's an app now that finds and connects to the web workflow
when browsers decided not to display the "http://", it created a lot of confusion for people who edit the URL bar
I have binaries for mac and windows, I haven't figured out how to do it on linux
oh that's the old name, I need to update the readme ๐
I'm hope it runs
well I didn't want to hijack your stream with node installation ๐ฌ
Hello ๐
From my experience using BearSSL (completely different library and C language stuff) but might apply here... I had to apply certificates for Https in order for certain things to work within a browser.
If your layout is already setup to work that way, it might be missing or you need to set it up to work with Http like what @strong acorn was saying
I've been trying cram a 6 month Google IT course into 6 days. So far have done 15 weeks worth of course work in 2 days so far.
Awesome. Glad you like it. โค๏ธ
I only discovered the Stemma port wouldn't work until like 2 days before I was going to ship them. It became a moral dilemma but shipped them, so heads up about the broken feature. Will be working on documenting a bodge workaround.
you go to /code on the device
I've learned more about Linux administration in the past 2 days than in the past 10 years. It's a lot to take in. determined to try to finish before christmas just to do it.
I did write some code for the cowbell and it worked ok but the stuff neradoc wrote was waaaay better than what i could do.
neradocs version is the current version in my github yes
uses asynchio, switches blink and toggle nicely, a great start.
no, you can have web workflow AND wifi in code
just don't start a server on port 80
or change the default web workflow port first ๐
Tim, why in line 23 say "Connected'? How you know that you're connected? I would first check if there is an IP-address b4 printing 'Connected'
one of the exercises in windows powershell took 45 minutes. the same thing in linux took 5 minutes. i feel like they're trying to steer people towards linux administration lol
true, but typically there would be an exception if connect() returns and it's not connected
OK, but then your script crashes
came in late sorry, what's the goal of the gist's API request?
are you going to have to take ownership and chmod just to look at the file?
how would you add new data to it like for other api's then?
i like how most pie emoji's are red like raspberry pi or cherry pi to see it better
why use a gist vs regular repo? gist can be private?
Gists are not private. Anyone with the URL can view it.
first time you get a proper key:value response always feels good.
there should be a third choice where secret gists are truly private, at least between you and Microsoft
probably helps prevent people from using github as cloud storage for personal files
though technically they are repositories
so you can just do a private repo
(you can clone, commit, push a gist with git like any other repo)
didn't know private repo's were an option, not like i have a use for it. maybe if for teams of proprietary stuff but then using github makes little sense instead of a private svn program.
oh yeah I have a few private repos, stuff that I could make public but don't want currently
Github gets severe reputational harm if they breach the private repo promise
no different than other cloud services that handle private data
maybe stuff you're working on but not quite ready to go live and make publicly available yet.
true, it's free i'm not going to complain
#draft
I think it makes a lot of sense for smaller companies in particular to use the github infrastructure, even with a paying tier rather than have something hosted on their own with all the management and security work that implies
just a cloud service like the others
Happy Holidays!
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐๏ธ
ho ho ho
The local editor looks awesome !
does it call str() on it ?
I've not used it.
I believe the editor is codemirror and that's the one I use too in the app
yeah it's pulling from cp.org
ohhh that's nice for logging something that might not need to update all the time. like, how fast can it accept modifications?
it wouldn't fit in the firmware ๐
Everytime I drop in on the stream I learn something new.
like you wouldn't use it for a real time temp sensor but sensor updates every 5 mins yes.
codemirror is rather flexible, I did add tabbing and a shortcut to comment out
not that i'd use that over adafruitio but could have some really neat use cases
I need to look at contributing that to the cp.org web editor, that will be easier than contributing the circup thing
ah that's a great idea, iot that can actually talk to you. maybe even a really old IoT device to make it smarter. great idea.
Is there a CP to Home Assistant guide... Probably straight-forward with MQTT...
/* searching */
sounds useful for pretty much every adafruit microcontroller, magtag, funhouse, etc.. that don't have screens. pyportal can actually show errors for example but a qt py cannot.
foamy, did you say control-s and control-q are now supported in web workflow serial?
yes. there are some.
https://learn.adafruit.com/search?q=home%2520assistant
i've been hearing a lot of great stuff about home assistant lately, i definitely want to get into that
I'm playing with one in my house on a Pi3b+, but I have their official HA Yellow hardware coming to put in my van build (camper)
control-q undoes control-s
undo should be ctrl-y?
doesn't handle control-r, which is a carriage return w/o a line feed (I use \r a lot in print statements)
control-s stops serial, control-q restarts serial ...
maybe were talking about different things
yeah ctrl-z is the one i was thinking of
yes, foamyguy is talking about the code editor
oh, I thought serial, thanks
so confusing to mix control codes for editor commands and serial flow control
lolyup
On that note, what is CTRL SHIFT Z really supposed to do in the first place? ๐คฃ
then again ctrl-c is usually copy but in repl and linux it's "you immediately remember ctrl+c is not copy"
doing most of my dev on mac, I never realized how ctrl-C is a problematic shortcut on PC, like how do you copy in a serial window ?
yeah in windows there's right click
i think right click might be paste
it's both
LโL
I think Mu uses ctrl-shift-C
on raspberry pi os, apps are very inconsistent in control-c/v and shift control-c/v
i usually right click copy in repl in mu, the muscle memory helps prevent me from trying to throw any command other than d & c at repl most times
could you use embedded unicode for returns instead of \n's?
if you click "edit" on a gist, there's "Add File" at the bottom (and you can drag and drop)
(and at the top you can click on "Embed" and choose "Clone" to get the clone link)
I wonder if there's a limit to gist comments, to avoid the read-append-rewrite to gist
too bad for the npm install
having the concept work as an option expands the toolkit just a little bit more. great job.
Thanks for the deep dive!
Very cool. Thanks for the stream!
happy holidays and all that :reindeer_emoji_or_something:
and the editor did its job well so congrats to Adafruit on getting that up and running too.
Nice work, thanks! โ๏ธโ๏ธ๐๐งโ๐
see you tomorrow
Thanks again Tim. Merry XMAS to all.
interesting idea. I hadn't considered comments, but that is definitely worth looking into since it's more of an "append" type thing where we wouldn't need to send back the existing content each time.
I wonder if gist commits can trigger github actions.
Ooh, another thing I hadn't considered. That would be cool though then you could get some kind of push notification or something going if you wanted. Or run some related task
@upper sandal I think my node environment is wonky and it's why the install didn't work for me. Poking a little further I found that my node interpreter doesn't allow ?? which seems to have been valid JS for a while. My version is very old I think. Eventually I'll figure out how to get a more modern one installed and give it another go.
I'm on v18.11.0
v12.22.9 ๐
not sure how I ended up with that old of one though. I think I should be able to get current version directly from their page and get it installed
Morning stream starting up now, Working on implementing a* pathfinding. Live on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWK6HfiUHhM or Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch
Volt is just pushy.
item=list[0];list=list[1:]
So the algorithm spirally looks at cells surrounding the starting location, marking the cell as being adjacent to a cell that is ultimately adjacent to the start cell?
Is the final path optimized to be the shortest path?
first thing that comes to mind is pcb auto-routing algorithm for a 1 layer pcb. so, something like this does have real world applications.
3d dimensions makes things more complicated but a lot more fun. UPS has amazingly efficient algorithms
There already exists a protocol for network routing called BGP ๐
based on time, distance, TTL, etc.
and I'm talking about professional WAN's and ISP's not like home setups to the ISP.
Those algorithms are built into BGP edge routers, specialized devices and protocol.
didn't know that, neat fact.
The iteration parameter puts a cost how far an object can move, giving the other pieces an opportunity to reposition. Past Tim has good ideas.
"I got a different distro of linux hoping it wouldn't need to be customized" that's like saying "i got a different kind of celery hoping it would taste different"
I had a vertical mouse once, but as it turns out I'm quite comfortable with my non-vertical current mouse with 12 buttons on the side and I prefer it
one of those WoW macro mice? always kinda wanted one but thought it was just so many buttons i'd end up continually clicking the wrong thing. 3 buttons on the side is enough for me.
I rarely do, I mostly use 6, 3 for media control (play/pause and volume) and 3 for Apple Exposรฉ (show desktop, show all windows, show app windows)
it's window management, like alt-tab
i have media keys like play pause volume +- on the keyboard, headset has volume/mute. putting that on a mouse would be overkill for me. brings up a good point that most of my time is spent with only 1 hand on the keyboard and 1 hand on the mouse which does seem inefficient for browsing or gaming. for coding, seems like overkill.
i do like the impression in there, yeah looks like that might be more comfortable, i'd also be interested in at least touching one to see how it feels.
yeah on my keyboard the (default) media keys are on the right side, so right hand, therefore having them on the mouse makes sense
I am putting together a "Nyquist" (neokey 5x6) for my work computer.
I just wish I could get a laptop with an ortho keyb
looks just like JP's keyboard
the thing is I don't like moving my hands a lot, so it's hard to justify a macro keypad - I need to up my foot pedal game ๐
Adafruit sells those panelized. I don't know if they come as a kit, but it's almost identical to the Nyquist.
i usually sit in a tall barstool at a tall workshop bench. foot pedals sound cool but i wouldn't be able to touch them. ๐
if not, make one ๐
yes but would make a horrible place for switches as it's the only amount of shifting i can do to change positions
tape Donkey Konga bongos to your stool ๐
Ever tried a 'standing stool'?
i bought my brother a macropad for last christmas and he loooooves it. hoping to turn my tr-cowbell into a macropad with mode switching for coding.
ctrl+c and ctrl+v will be the first keys i macro on it ๐
maybe make some of the last keys dedicated for opening adafruit, github, programs.. macropads are so versatile.
Add some macro or joystick knee levers to the foot pedals (like a pedal steel guitar).
eventually built my own keyboard with a built in sequencer/macropad. so many cool projects to do.
yes tr-cowbell v 1.3 will have a joystick instead of 5 navigation buttons. seems like a more efficient use of GPIO.
might actually get rid of the rotary encoder for the joystick too
because the rotary encoders are actually kind of expensive
unlike a potentiometer which are like pennies, joysticks aren't much more, but encoders are twice as expensive. the rotary encoder was actually one of the most expensive core components on the board, more than the chips.
like, almost as expensive as the pcb itself after doing the cost analysis per board.
because the little joysticks are so cheap can almost add 1 per step switch for about the same as 1 encoder cost, add a ton more functionality for cheaper.
Real world issues.
Pretty slick algorithm.
amazing problem solving and coding today.
Thanks for the stream. Harvested a couple of nuggets for the gray matter.
as always
Happy Holidays

Just curious. Not a request.
I believe there is a way to do that.

Should be in just over 10 minutes
Wasn't sure if it was closed for the holidays
i'm watching the entirety of the deep dive but i'll pause that for JP's product pick of the week ๐
I haven't seen anything on their blog today, so guessing it's on
I haven't gotten any youtube alerts yet

watched the end of JP's product pick last week and he says there will not be one today
aha, good catch - thank you
JP's next appearance will be JP's workshop after show & tell
So product pick will be next week?
yes
Thanks... I was holding off going to the store
in the TR-Cowbell repo the circuit diagram is a link to the EasyEDA page where you can inspect the schematic, board layout, 3d model, etc.. or use it to fork and make your own.

Hi Liz!
Please join us in the video if you've got a project to show!
I finished my Christmas present project but I'm not able to present it today ๐ ๐
Disco bar!
i learned about WLED from Erin St Blaines jellyfish project. When she said they could be meshed it blew my mind. I totally want to play with WLED.
great project Kevin!
i was going to say put on some music but YT content copyright bs
the stuff people are doing with print in place goals is kinda mind blowing
Happy S&T Day all!
Print in place is magic... I remember when it was just like, slugs and snakes -- super simple things
One of my favorite things about the wood is you can sand it like regular wood
Looks a bit like Bubo from Clash of the Titans
Someone mentioned Bubo when they showed it on the 3D printing hangouts!
also kudos for the amazing 3d printing year in review video
Owls are the best
Here's the Owl, thanks folks! https://www.printables.com/model/348322-odette-the-owl
it's gotta a help button too
begs the question just how many keyboards are out there with help buttons?
i imagine they were probably at their height in the mid to late 90's as the internet just started?
I love all the recent projects you've been doing to give old interface devices new life, Jeff
And I love the old newsletters!
Practical?
Nice
that's a great use for that, great project
Double Jeff is good
i've lived in houses with salt brine systems and you ALWAYS forget to check them until like a month later
I want a Trash 80
Model 1 Level 1 was entry level 4k machine.
Level 2 was where you started with the expansion interface and a whopping 16k
no one needs a monitor faster than 47 seconds...
I had both
Cartoon guy wearing shades because the screen is so bright
Making the whole screen white seems kinda decadent tbh
does that classify as pixel art?
Everything is pixel art if you classify hard enough
That's so wild. The Basic example is a nested loop I'm currently in CircuitPython on the 5x5 BFF
Until the Windows era, it was all kinda like that
today patience is measured in milliseconds
