how?
cellphone hijack -> paypal hijack
oh wow
i'm hearing a bit of audio clipping on the peaks (mostly from Phil, a little from Limor)
Hi, all! Dajia hao! Minasan konban wa!
put a factory long linear slide across the ceiling and do a full-day adafruit warehouse timelapse!
MFA not limited to 2FA depending on the value of the assets

For your globe and other Lego adventures, I've used the 5v version of these 559 Series a lot over the years. Super easy to use and with leads!

@open girder more frequent clipping tonight, even on the low-level conversation
Security awareness is a great thing.
not getting clipping too much at HD
He had to fight for his right to party
It'll happen when it happens.

Yay the song!
Fahrenheit in wipper snapper?
🎵 😄
🎵
You can't get me , pt. I love this song now (twitch twitch)
It's a chip shortage, it's a chip shortage, every day, in every way. 🎵 🎶
We can invite all our friends and have soda and pie.
The Official @open girder Coin.
Can you mine them with a neopixel?
Tokyo Denki Kagaku
Tokyo Denki Kagaku (oh you beat me to it
Any chance we could get a Chip Shortage t-shirt? So years from now, in a time of great plenty, we can put on the shirt and think back and remember those good old days when chips weren’t available but big ideas and design updates were overflowing…
The show & tell badge I made uses a TDK IMU and ... yup cannot get it, or the first replacement I found even
The Adapocalypse
long time audio component provider (DAT, cassette, ...)
with a wearable audio playback unit playing that song…
No because that would require a chip.
the mailbag song reminds me of something from fallout
Ron.... Swanson??
hooray CPy 8! That WiFi workflow looks pretty great 😄
Also great to see ESP32 supported, opens up a huge variety of existing devboards and maybe even IoT hardware that runs ESP32-based modules 😄
I've got all the ESP32 boards!
I haven't looked at the .env file but it looks really useful
the older esp32-v2 boards work awesome with wippersnapper
I got so many ESP32 boards I'm getting close to ESP33
Anyone use Nextion screens?
"Y'all be wearing gold-plated diapers."
What was the blues wireless thing about? I must have missed that one. I don't see a youtube video on it.
They hosted it themselves - it was called Reimagining IOT deployments with CircuitPython
link?
contemporaneous but not sponsored by Adafruit as i understand it?
@jovial estuary yep, they did it at the same time/day
Scott left a little teaser before his mat lv about ESP32SX BLE. Any more info?
@split gazelle cool project liz. wanted to ask if you're sure the pressure sensor is right because it's waaaay down there at 1001 hpa? i only ever see it that low during a hurricane.
solder paste zen
Might be more here: https://github.com/tannewt
Is that disney sky?
"this disney villain" (autocaption) 😆
love love those vids of test jigs
solder fountain looks so soothing for some reason
was it plugged into the right switch socket in that video? 😛
i played with wippersnapper and adafruitio more today. it's just getting easier every day.
💀
And you probably know about this, but here's a related issue to follow:
https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/issues/5926
we walked uphill both ways carrying a datacenter to the launch pad to get data to the cloud
yup, wippersnapper is definitely great for kids. i'm using it because it's hands down the easiest way to get up and running with adafruitio anything.
but we are glad the kids have it easy now
Does the "DD" mean anything? ("Definitely DIP"?)
Yup Eric, 5926 is the door stopper, we've been watching it like a hawk for many moons... 😆
sounds like this avr will be good for arduino. has 2 interrupts too which is nice.
@queen sentinel What are you making? Are there other BLE options?
maybe a metro mini-mini-mini?
i think they might use something like that for seesaw or multiplexers too
zero-cross detector is interesting
@open girder question could the microchip CPU be used as a “ see-saw” type board on a future Adafruit board ? Could it have that type of use ?
what is cross detection?
@echo canopy I'm guessing that it may be more expensive than other options. But yeah, one certainly could.
zero cross for like DAC's?
Cool cool
BLE HID and BLE MIDI. Yup, been doing a workaround with a surrogate processor connected to the host PC to do HID/MIDI. Using BLE Radio to do wireless comm between the controller and the host PC surrogate.
LUTs are bringing flashbacks to programming PALs and GALs for school projects
wow, that looks super handy instead of a voltage regulator bank
Yep, I'd use an NRF52840 something something in the meantime. I'm actually doing that on a Pi project with a BLE ItsyBitsy, since BLE has been so limited/incomplete on Pi.
Integrated level shifter sounds really useful!
ahh mvio = multi voltage in out.
totally. I think I still have some GAL16V8D in a tube somewhere
combine with the new usb-pd stuff and power just goes to where it needs to with less parts
welp that helps with my "what else to add to digikey cart" problem
ikr
Yeah the "how do I get free shipping"
i don't have any designs that could use it right now but i know a lot of you out there might be salivating at the prospect of only needing 1 chip.
no DIP tho right now
qfn only?
hey I can solder some of those chips!
I have a few of those laying around for hacking an old LeCroy scope I've got on the "to hack soon" pile 🙂 Forgot about em until just now
Chips and dip!
yeah I still have a few soic breakouts left
yeah i'm going to get one of those creality 3d printers from last weeks NPI.
just saving up for it.
i guess AVR is the new 8051?
i need one too
maybe start with a breakout?
I have not moved on. I've been using ATmega328's and I'm glad to see that AVRs are not dead.
forgot the song 😭
Fun fact: a substantial number of Jibo engineers came from iRobot
all i see is the start of a battlebot format
I've heard of him I think
found an old @open girder PT Make article on @cinder wind roomba hacking https://makezine.com/article/craft/maker-faire-tod-kurt-room/
get your automated cat car today... you know how cats love to lay on those things
I wonder if I could program this to break up my cats when they fight
`There was a joke on late night tv when Jibo first shipped about a Jibo and a Roomba becoming intimate. Hilarious
omg your prediction was so on the mark. five years to the day
put a water spray bottle on it, tensor flow, and voila.
@cinder wind predictions are hard, more so ones about the future 🙂
Google AIY when it first came out, someone had an AIY Vision and Voice hooked to a Roomba that would tell you what piece of furniture it was cleaning.
Q: is it better-behaved on I2C than the LC709203F?
🎉 got the new new song
Question: Scott left a little teaser before his mat lv about ESP32SX BLE. Any more info?
pretty day in the park
@open girder question the LC709203F has a few battery volume examples —- curious how different it would be to add some other battery sizes like 1,,200 ?
I'm really interested in this too!
will be cool for my weatherstation, will look into a UV sensor too. didn't even consider that for a weatherstation.
someone on YouTube asked about the Curiosity board header holes are not in a line… i think that's an innovation (from SparkFun? not sure of credit here) to help hold inline headers in place for soldering, or even to have enough friction to make good electrical contact
how much stuff will I3C break that uses adafruit I2C clockstretching?
Saw this in a few Pimoroni boards a few years back and can confirm that it works great for quick prototyping without soldering and even better for holding the headers when soldering 🙂 Easy mode!
Is it possible to communicate over wifi on an ESP32-S3 but not using a webserver?
meh, if you're going to solder them anyway it doesn't matter.
I think it's a great idea, but for 99.9% of boards, I just use a breadboard, vise, and/or third hand.
this is your fault todbot
🎵 I'm hearin that song...
UDP sockets, TCP sockets, HTTP, MQTT, etc.
sorry
🤣
Thanks @open girder and good night. 🌘
goodnight!
good show, thank you
Thank you for sharing your time with us.
Good night everyone and remember… Don’t Panic!
Bye
👋 thanks adafriends!
👋
a webserver is just a pool of TCP/IP sockets responding to a protocol. There are lower or higher level protocols you can use. Lower level: IP or TCP sockets
Good night everyone 👋
Thx, LA & MrLA!
Bye bye all you good folks
here's an example in CircuitPython of sending data over WiFI between two devices using UDP that I was working on earlier today: https://gist.github.com/todbot/877b2037b6c7b2c4c11545c83c6e2182
Thanks Adafruit g'night all!
@ionic garnet since you are here, I'll just mention that I would be happy to test Pico wifi when you get to that point, if that's still a thing 🙂
@real depot more socket examples, interoperable between CPython, CircuitPython native wifi, ESP32SPI, WIZnet Ethernet https://github.com/anecdata/Socket
I use an NRF52840 for the host side surrogate, but the throughput using BLE Radio is glacial so it's just a prototyping aid not a functional solution... It's just another R&D challenge. 😄
Thank you! UDP sockets work great! Received message from 192.168.87.133: hi there from CircuitPython! 6
awesome! I am a big fan of UDP
todbot is a 🧙♂️
Hi all, I won't be livestreaming today. Back on next Tuesday for JPPPoW and next Thursday for Workshop.
lars bite too many cables
Closing all the blinds and will just sit in the dark today.
Hi, Tim and all present. Happy Friday!
👋
o/ Hello all, hope the day is going well
hiya
👋
Bon Appetit @smoky island when food happens 😄
That is thermally inactive (Cool)
Pyportal have one? Not the titano
Ok I get it now the "Entry form" on the github page is a clickable link, Its one of those days for me I guess 🤦
I have one, I just haven't had my office put back together so I haven't gotten to this beyond trying to figure out if this pull request basic is still a small memory footprint
I've got to step out for a bit, I might be back before the stream ends but if not hope everyone's weekend starts off well!
I have one on a SparkFun breakout.
Hey all cool people. Have just a few minutes to pop in and see what Tim’s up to today.
There are three hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation and naming things.
Hacktablet give away later tonight!
The read and write functions were implemented in the bus specific subclasses of the basic BME280 class.
I moved them to the protocol.py file.
hello
Thanks for the review, it is appreciated.
Tim, ref the spaceminer game: where can I find the module 'displayio_listselect' ?
I just downloaded the latest bundle. It is not in there
🎆
JPG/PNG is a hard place to start for how it is compressed
it's my understanding too
Tried to load a PNG, I got "Filters not supported" :boggled:
Indexed, not RGB then. Thanks.
what's the third one ? determining if your program finish even when you do the orbiting a black hole trick ?
Off by one errors. 😁
I used ImageMagick to resize the image and change to indexed:
convert ecarp.png -resize 240x240 PNG8:ecarp-sm.png
when I learned CS the teacher said that the halting problem is undecidable unless you are orbiting a black hole (unlimited time)
To this day I'm not sure if that was a joke or not (and even then, who cares ?)
SC-Lemon, SC-Azure. ??
And even then it wouldn't work for factorials algorithms and such thing because the black hole would dissipate first
oh no i missed most of the stream 😦 will watch it later.
And I thought I'm in CS not astrophysics...
the hack tablet giveaway is still going on? thought that finished up on circuit python day?
SCL - Lemon Yellow, SDA - Azure Blue
drawing be on stream or offline after stream kind of thing?
oh I didn't know there was a stream going on 🤣
@reef dew this is the live broadcast topic after all... that's how this works 😆
people usually only chat in here while a live stream is happening.
I though you guys were still discussing a stream that happened some time ago
chat usually doesn't happen in here more than about 5-10 minutes before or after a stream. if chat happens long after a stream it's considered off topic and people move over to general chat topic to continue conversations.
The gh tool is amazing.
does it need that many for a startup calibration or something?
I don't even see fifo_acceleration in the library code
so not sure what's it's calling with sensor.fifo_acceleration()
unless you have access to non-public code
he's working on the library 😉
that does seem like an awful lot of repeated tuple values.
how many times is it repeating the tuple output? if it's consistent could be a clue.
ie: RATE_1344_HZ, MODE_HIGH_RESOLUTION, RANGE_16G just in case
I think it implements a FIFO queue on the x,y,z streams.
will be back tomorrow at coffee O'clock
oh yeah forgot about that too. special restream after this one later.
Thanks @smoky island !
Thanks @smoky island! See you later tonight
Thanks!
See ya
👋
Tnx again Tim. Everyone a nice weekend1
see 'registers' in the datasheet and brain segmentation fault 😦
Livestream for the final HackTablet giveaway beginning now watch along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxYumxJtABE
Good luck to all of our entrants!
Thank you for all your work helping organize this, too!
Really great of kmatch and Foamyguy to put all that work in for a giveaway.
Thank you. Have a good night folks! 👋
Getting started a little early this morning. Picking up testing with the accelerometer, then some 3D modeling. Follow along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WdBUx7-USI
Hey Tim!
morning
because of word wrap sometimes you can resize the window and you'll get it to show itself in a much more readable way... in case you don't want to parse the output. it's weird but it works sometimes.
Good morning!
Do you have a PyCharm add-in that emulates the mu or Atom plotter capability? Might help to spot the patterns.
that's a good idea too but probably not accurate enough to ensure all raw values are identical. parse or formatted print would honestly be best.
is there an init sequence that might be wrong for that mode where it's reading data beyond a certain amount of time (in ms) or something like that?
Is the module a lsm303 or lsm303dlh? They use different libraries.
the one currently in the store is the LSM303AGR
I’ll see if I have one. Would be interesting to see if the mag driver shows similar issues.
i don't even have to look. i know i don't. i have no use for a dof sensor in my life right now.
maybe someday when i build my lifesize replicant murderbot i'll need one.
If the value is greater than two but also if it's 4? Can you do that?
Thanks, good to know I have learned some Python. 🙂
Here's the video foamyguy mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL53gHCIb-0
Holes are good for cooling enclosed TFT displays. The backlight on some gets surprisingly warm.
Had to put a fan in aPyPortal case and use the light sensor to dim/blank the display to keep it cool.
A hole for the light sensor? I’ve used it for a primitive gesture detector.
Would exposing an SD card slot be useful?
ruiz brothers use an extension on their little lunchbox media server to access their sd card
Is there a simple way to convert from [Eagle] to OScad?
Okay, I’ll stop with the scope creep for now. Wait, can it accommodate an attached speaker for reaching annoying noise levels? Okay, now I’ll stop.
That's fine. Good enough.
sd card extender https://www.adafruit.com/product/3687 could just pipe it out to the front or top like a cartridge game device.
you can barely hear the audio from the small oval speakers
the 3W I2S module with a 3W speaker is loud enough
The oval speaker on the PyPortal is very loud.
oh that's right got the pyportal board to deal with in there
i don't have one, if cgrover says its good enough then i'll trust that
Don’t have to cut the jumper unless you want a bit of extra volume.
i'm getting close to starting on a 20w audio system from a feather.
Same speaker as on the PyGamer.
adafruit has a 3W and 20W amplifier, there's nothing in between for I2S.
you'd be a great programming professor. i could totally see that.
Their 20w amp works nicely.
i like watching your unstructured streams, it's far more practical for real world situations, because that's what you do.
I'm loading Fusion360 now, it takes a bit. 🙂
Wow it almost looks like a prank captcha. 🤷♂️
Some of the path is obscured but you can deduce the end.
@smoky island Here is the STL: https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/04265u_XtN8KGsvSNZFpQ1xug#3632_Joy_FeatherWing_v1
Default export, I didn't open it first though
I can barely figure out how to create an object. Maybe ask Pedro or Noe. 🤷
the free version of fusion360 doesn't have library/addon support like the paid version. i was trying to make one of those 3D animated gifs for wipper snapper component and couldn't. no library support means it won't find stuff like resistor and capacitors for the board render.
for gaming, the buttons are pretty much always on the right.
navigation is usually on the left
unless navigation is buttons, but the joystick in there in this case.
button caps?
yeah import some button cap models that have lipped edges, can make 4 holes for them. more appealing than an open square.
You could have 'top-hat' shaped bits trapped between the buttons and the case.
Like in a calculator.
ah didn't realize the round button caps were for that style of tacticle switch. nothing in adafruit store for the small round ones you're right.
you'd have to desolder them and put on some taller ones
The joystick is pretty thick.
and has a cap that isn't shown in the render
Thanks. Have clicky-clack for me.
Thanks!
thanks!

Good evening. Happy Artemis Eve. 🌒 🌓 🌔 🌕 🌖 🌗 🌘 🌑

👋
"There's a part shortage..." 🎵
Hi
hello
resolved my programming nrf issues from lase week by purchasing the nrf52840 dk
been having lots of fun with it
Love the hub!
The breadboard pins will make it useful for attaching non-Stemma legacy stuff.
i almost bought the Spark Fun but it didn't match rest of boards!
i'm having trouble getting the cyberdeck hat and the hyperpixel 4 inch screen to work on the pi 400 despite following all instructions given by adafruit
I think I also had trouble, and gave up. I did cut the trace, but not working with the cyberdeck. 😦
ohhh i want some of those magnetic cables. great idea.
oh I use circular magnetic USB plugs (with data)
🔥???
the more boards you have with the different connectors the more you'll want something like that. i want to replace ALL my usb cables with them now.
that's pretty much what I did
If they had an FTDI header tip, I'd buy it. 😄
She left 1 in stock for the rest of us. 😄
Question: I am looking for an IC that emulate button press of a keyboard where you can say connect ROWx with COLy. The opposite of a keyboard matrix scanner. But I could not find a proper name for searching that. <= Could be a great search.
Q: DS4420 will it support multiple I2C addresses? A: yes, looks like 8 available addresses.
most circular ones are power only, in fact the brand I bought my data ones from seems to no longer exist, it's a shame, I love the freedom (they also have a rotating head)
can never have enough I2S amplifier chips.
I2C amp? not sure if i can use that with the nrf52840, only really does I2S out.
then again i already have like 4 I2S amps from adafruit so i'm covered, but I2C audio users might not be.
BGA is a video format before CGA, EGA and VGA... Like the B programming language was before the C language.
A-->>C++
Thanks and good night. 🌒
Bye
thanks for the new audio goodies! looking forward to them. 👋
this is the kind of magnetic cables I use, though mine are a little different, from TOPK who apparently stopped making them. The magnetic connection is round allowing for 360° of rotation but still does data, and the cable also can turn at a 90° angle which is really useful when you got devices that have the plug in the back or at the top and you try to fit them on your desk:
https://www.amazon.com/S-Magnetic-Universal-Compatible-i-Product/dp/B082PXYPQB/
swivel head seems like it would be delicate and break but really similar.
didn't even know magnetic connectors existed before i saw the chonky black ones on adafruit. love the concept.
yeah I am careful with the swivel head
don't want some cable just want 30-in-1 usb cable 😦
if you have them plugged into every device then the cable becomes universal. hard to wrap my head around, it's too easy, what's the catch.
that accept all possible types of usb cables as output and a normal one as input 😦
I have 5 magnet cables connected to my computer (and 2 to the other computer and 2 to power-only plugs) and heads on the boards I commonly use, and I swap boards without caring if they need micro or USBC
can you buy only the magnetic plug ends in case you lose them? i might have to go replace all my cables with these now. like seriously, i'm gonna do it.
for the ones I have yes, I bought a bunch
this is a way around the proprietary connector madness
get a seat at the security council so everyone in the world only make one ?
hope they backport these to every style including the old apple 30 pin or whatever. what a great idea.
and micro USB 3, and mini USB 3
but no they usually only make micro, C and lightning
makes having a rats nest of cables more bearable. constantly pulling on cables to look at the end, nope not that one, or that one, oh there it is.
we should just be using neutrinos like the star to talk to MCU they have a bandwidth of 900 trillion kbps anyway, fast enough
and it would be wireless too
it's easier to swap but it kind of made my rats nest worse, because I usually use rolling cables, which they don't make for the magnet ones :p
micro-b, mini-b, usb-c, and lightning pretty much all the major ones anyone's needed for the past 15 years.
didn't know those existed either 😦 my cable game is horrible apparently.
so how is that worse? can't you crack that open and replace it with the magnetic one?
These can be dangerous, I used to use them until one retracted to my knee
I could try, but they are made flat so they retract well
oh
magnetic ones are typically circular nylon-covered cables
well umm are you good at soldering? 😛
there's like an elastic inside so sometime they can pinch a bit
seems like a lot of work but doable.
there are cable retractor things too but not as practical
I don't even know what to call it
i'll assume when you pull them out they lock in place and don't try to drag the board back with it like a lizard tongue?
yeah they go click click click
i'll look into picking some of those up too then, give them a shot. my rats nest is getting worse the more boards i get
oh there are cable winders
i'll get some of the magnetic type and retractors. see if i can solder them together.
(I am not an Amazon affiliate, but it's easier to link to an amazon page)
it's actually very appreciated, link to the flat retractor?
i like the idea of a smaller form factor, will try to solder them together.
I have a couple of that kind of things: it's a hook with a spring but it's not very practical to unwind https://www.amazon.com/UKCOCO-Automatic-Headphone-Retractable-Organizer/dp/B07JF2ZSC9/
and the cable is all bent at the point you hooked it
i'll give that one a go with the magnetic heads
yeah there's a bunch of generic retractable cables that look and feel flimsier
but might be good nonetheless
some of the others had multiple ports on them which with multiple cables would look like i have a squid on my desk.
if i was more into chuthulu i might be ok with.
I actually like the really flimsy ones because unlike most cables they are so thin that the cable does not move the board (most normal cables will stop you from having your board flat on the desk just by the weight of the cable)
like this one https://www.amazon.com/Miger-Retractable-Lightning-Connectors-Compatible/dp/B01N02S20V/ kind of takes the whole point of cleaning up a rats nest and makes it worse.
but the cheap flimsy ones break easily (the retracting mechanism) and I have doubts about their power carrying abilities if used to recharge something
figured if you like the ones you pictured then i'd go for something proven
ah I'm not showing what I bought, but the category of products
that' why I say "like those"
not "those"
sometime when I ask for alternatives here I hope you aren't offended and don't think I'm not taking the suggestion, adafruit can't be the answer always for me, so I like to know what is cheap/good as well... like those cables you are discussing about.
here's ones I bought, that is the last non magnetic currently on my desk with a feather ESP32 V2 flying in the air at the other end: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B074P2VDYH/
Description : Produit neuf et de haute qualité. Télescopique USB à USB 3.1 Type C câble de synchronisation plat Chargement et synchronisation de données simultanés Rétractable, pratique à transporter et utiliser Connectez-vous à votre PC / ordinateur portable par le port USB Vous permet de connec...
but, you know, amazon.fr + "not available" as is often the case with generic USB products within months of buying it
and to be honest I partly chose them for the colors
they're all pretty short but i don't keep boards far from the pc anyway. only long cord i really need is for headphone recharging. ahhh it'll make taking the cable from the rechargable headphones easier. kind of exciting to get them and start trying it out.
these are the type of generic ones where I appreciate the lightness, but they break too easily https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B005SCL7PC/
probably have like 20 cables to swap out all over the house. when adafruit starts stocking them i'll get some from them too.
note that magnetic cables are not interoperable, everyone does their thing, so that's an issue to consider
hmm good point
if you pick one and you can't get new cables, you have to change them all
reviews for A.S Gen2 USB says they aren't data cables despite what's claimed 😦
or partition your workspace/house into territories
good catch didn't even think of that 😬
oh that sucks
yeah i'll just wait until adafruit stocks them and gobble up a bunch.
not that I always trust reviews mind you but for 20$ I'm not gonna be the guinea pig
ikr
so which ones should I get?
oh there are other brands with different designs of swivel heads, the market is expanding
i'll wait until adafruit stocks them, they're sure to be data and power
What's on the menu this lovely Tuesday?
says only 8 in stock for me? seems a bit odd for pick of the week.
shh, secret stock. don't tell anyone.
fyi, in these scenarios the product tends to sell out, so be quick
but they usually stash some aside for the ppotw
seems this one definitely will.
ok let's push that up off the screen for when he goes live so the youtube viewers can't see it. 😛
as someone who occasionally needs JP to “sell” me on why the ppotw is something I “need”, I’m sad when things sell out before I make that decision
noooooo dyno bot you...
eek, shipping quote for usps is down
they're awesome for LED projects. it's honestly my go to LED driver board for FastLED. it's native 5V and the V2 now has stemma. i don't have any of the v2 yet.
howdy!
🎵
Taking us to Metro City
let's play guess the temperature at JP's house
hot!
you live in a page? 😮
Millions of tiny JPs, in the browser windows all over the world
i'm forced to get it 2nd day air with UPS for $30 shipping...
(why does this channel not have a tiny JP funny-face emoji?)
Battery?
no, there's just no options except 2nd day air or 1 day for $60.
Weird
maybe not that one...
dahahah
that's a good one
i think the banner said usps api was down. maybe that's affecting shipping options?
yeah $30 for shipping and shipping quote issues might kill this week product pick of the week.
USPS down? 😮 I can understand if twitter is down, or if my cell provider goes down for an entire day, but the Post Office? 😱
like, it's not an emergency, i don't need 2 day shipping priority for a metro mini.
“Failed to get shipping quote calculation - usps. Please try again later and contact us for assistance.” Anyone else?
yep
don't know but I hope I can have a glass of WATER
Yes, USPS is apparently having problems today.
metro mini is arduino only, but with FastLED it's still a wicked great LED driver board.
From the banner at top of page:
"USPS’s shipping API is currently having some outages / issues. Please check back soon or select an alternative shipping option at checkout"
*USPS shipping calculator ***10 (10: not including all our hidden fees)
forced 2nd day air shipping is going to negate any savings from it being product pick of the week 😔
🇸🇪 👍
In my day we used a Boarduino. 😄
i picked up 2 along with a larger order.
yeah i think the idea was based on the Arduino Nano except it doesn't have the same issue with the FTDI drivers anymore. think it went to ch3 drivers?
question, is it native USB?
like what kind of drivers?
the adafruit arduino uno clone is called metro. so the nano clone is called the metro mini.
SiLabs CP2102N hardware USB to Serial converter
no learn for that one specifically yet
I believe they are USB translated to tty port on the micro-controller chip, like a uno or a mega. I mean you can program a uno with a programmer vi the ISP pins and not use the ch34x USB interface chip.
Thanks @haughty quiver
thanks jp
can you pick up your order in person for adafruit ?
Bye
all i heard was sequencer and everything was a blank after that
Mind the gap!
@reef dew no, shipping only
Thanks @haughty quiver !
ah I asked because I'm strongly considering going to the US or China because of the shipping problems / shortage
thank you all!
but I guess being in the same city as adafruit would solve the problem too
go to NY, shipping should be faster from adafruit 😛
Being in the same city is cheating, pretty fun if you could walk to adafruit and buy from the front counter
that would be cool!
I signed up for the green card lottery so we will see
They could add buy so much from the front counter and your freebee is a tour
picked up 2 pico's too. seems todbot and jp using that platform for sequencer controllers so "I need it"
yeah no tours, definitely no tours
The other solution is that I make a drone with an oled that can travel between continents
get authorization to fly above airspace
land in shenzen and put instructions on the screen to put my items on it, then fly it back to canada
Atm I'm not sure which one of the two solution are harder
bought my pico's from Canakit in Vancouver
well they have ground based drones that will pick up stuff and put it in the vehicle for you... they're called shipping companies.
but I have to pay duties, hidden fees, wait etc
if my drone is stealth no one can see it so no duty/customs etc and it's fast 🤣
We all have to wait for things, I wait 2-4 weeks all the time for Aliexpress stuff
biological based intelligent drone, fully autonomous, listens and responds to commands.
Yeah right UPS stop charging so much duty, UPS increase duty by 100%
if you don't have a company like adafruit in your region, start one?
shipping isn't much less expensive just because someone is a company
or I would have done that a long time ago...
omg no 😄 Then you would have all the headaches of sourcing & shipping plus the headaches of running a company
Plus in canada it's harder to test the boards because the electrons slow down as it get colder (ands stops at 0K)
digikey is in north dakota i think, that's basically canada.
compared to me in Florida anyway
NOT TRUE!
Electrons work fine down to at least -20. (after that it's a problem)
there is a part of the US where they have to enter canada to buy food or go to school
ugh North Dakota is defiantly not Canada, tsk tsk
and they get a special pass at the border crossing because of that
west coast is where that special chunk of land is
North Dakota is almost not populated, meanwhile North-North-North Dakota in Canada has a couple of large cities. Because logic doesn't hold
east coast Canada has a town that is serviced by a ferry from the US
Also if you fall in certain canadian bodies of water you might get rescued by US personnel
only the great lakes
niagra
nah some smaller lakes have rivers that cross the border
once your corpse cross the border it's the US problem
srsly, I've been doing pretty well in Canada ordering from DigiKey and [the other guys], and also from various speciality retailers in the US & UK who have reasonable shipping.
please let me know of their names because I order a board the size of a dice on adafruit or a small r/c part for hobbywing and they charge me 60$ for shipping + all the hidden fees from DHL/etc...
And I just decided to bar any US companies from my list because it's pointless because of the massive shipping
sparkfun? digikey carries their stuff too though as well.
meanwhile china ship me a dc motor for 1$ and it's in canada the day after in vancouver (but CBSA takes 2 months to process it)
yeah but I don't know of any US companies besides digikey / mouse that have intermediate shipping warehouses in canada to avoid huge shipping costs
Try to use USPS (or Royal Post or whatever) for shipping. It may take longer but there are no extra fees, and it'll come to your mailbox if possible (otherwise to the Canada Post outlet at your local dry cleaners or whatever).
nah I have a postal box in my building, can even send snail mail from it
canada post workers were sick of ringing us up so we got one for free 🤣
that's true, USPS is the US royal post, all govt fees are probably much easier handled between those 2
but DHL is basically german royal post...
is it? didn't know that
And canada buy all their tanks from the german, surely they can negociate shipping fees too ? (less strategic stuff)
does canada expect their tanks in less than a week shipped though? 😛
A C-17 can fit a tank, so maybe?
I think the german send the leftover reserve B team tanks when they are in pieces so they have to be reassembled with glue etc 😄
That is what a documentary from ARTE said and they also showed the huge warehouse where they were kept
DHL to canada from Adafruit. My last purchase from them ws 455.30 USD, discount 45.53 becuase of Ask a engineer code, Shipping to Canada 47.30, duties was about $30 because of Cad GST charges
There are some weird stuff as well, like you'd expect if you order more stuff it's less expensive
but personally it's always 35 usd$ base + 20% of the purchase above 35$ for the least expensive option
My lowest DHL was 22.25 for a 44.95 order with a 22 duty
and stemma qt cable add 15$ of shipping per type (for some reason?!)
from Adafruit no..., Adafruit calculates shipping on full order weight for example that order I listed last DHL Express (1 x 0.25lbs) (Express Worldwide)
DHL duty is usually a flat $20 broker fee + GST
I am unsure if you are in a province with provincial sales tax if that is added on. I am alberta and only have to worry about GST
Some sites will tell you whether particular shipping methods charge extra fees.
we had two peoples the other days that complained that DHL added them a surprise "excess line" 80$ fee... in canada
hence me being worried about hidden fees
oh the metro mini also now has USB-C, didn't realize that at first. hope adafruit comes out with their magnetic cables soon. everything marching towards a USB-C world and I don't have enough cables for them.
did some research on it and it seems like magnetic cables never get certified
because the magnetic part and not being joined together create ESD above the specs
the ones adafruit was looking at specifically?
magnetic cables in general, reddit has a sticky about them
most of the ones i've seen have a swivel head and the ones adfruit showed don't have that.
advising peoples to never buy them, forever
really, good to know
they should have talked to DHL, When I order and use DHL I use their tracking to see when it hits the Cincinnati hub and they have calculated duty and I pay right then online so that it arrives at my door and it is just drop off no other costs occur.
DHL must have an API issue because I usually use this order to show you my shipping issue
In my experience, post office (USPS) shipping will not result in extra fees. That's why I prefer it.
but today instead of being 90$ for a 100$ order it's 30$
for some reason
if it let me order lithium batteries the DHL API is definitively down (since that's illegal)
It's UPS at the moment that is having a API issue according to Adafruit
you can have up to 3 lithium batterys in a DHL order
canada post says it's illegal?
It specifically states that on Adafruit when you order a itme with even a 2032 battery
Canada post different rules
lithium batteries that aren't part of an item in a dedicated battery box ?
but canada post are the feds and they make shipping laws ?
besides I have ordered lithium from Aliexpress and it always arrives just fine from Canada Post
In adafruit it's on the shopping cart as you complete it and you have Lithium depending on the shipper it will state what the limits are and it won't complete the cart if you exceed it.
I guess I'll have to try again another day
one day I'll have to group everything and make a big purchase off adafruit
since they sell things that mouser/digikey don't even order to offer up...
like the feather with the tft screen fused on 😦
and the r/c modding parts ffrom canada are very limited as well compared to integy part from the US so shipping is my #1 issue way before the shortage
The rules for battery's are so stupidly enforced, I get in a complaint from dhl if I have 5 items that have 2032 battery's but I order 10 18650 battery's from Ali-express and not a complaint from Canada post.
meanwhile it's completely fine to import plutonium (just not by canada post)...
yeah probably
as long as it's not enough becquerels/cuiries/whatever that exceed the limit in the law
do you get your packages form china held for long ?
something is definitively off with DHL
No never, but Canada post tends to gather multple china mail packs for me and puts them in a mega bundle before delivery which I guess saves them money
Like I'm buying almost all of adafruit inventory and still 30$ shipping 🤣

is there any chance we can get an updated version of the raspberry pi pipboy project? everything involved with the original was underpowerd and undervolted and i think it can be improved with better power, screen and a pi 4
🎉
@glad valley not pi based but this one is pretty sweet https://learn.adafruit.com/pip-boy-2040
thanks for the shout-out!
my idea was for it to be a truely functional pc
email, youtube, music, games etc
even an updated version of the 3D printed case files to fit a 4 inch screen would be wonderful
Awesome. I've been waiting for this to come out.

would you consider making a new version of the pi pipboy that uses a 4-5 inch screen and a 2A power source? please? it'd be super popular as a portable youtube machine, wrist camera, music player or just email/ discord machine! even upgrading it to use the hyperpixel 4 square screen would be incredible!
Just as fast as the Pi came in stock, already gone

good evening

Good evening everyone.
Good evening everyone
Hello everyone
Thanks for hosting, JP! sweatin to the show & tell'ies
ahaha I think JP almost said "Digifruit"
from the images of silicon i've seen the arc reactor projects were a huge hit
👋
if someone has photos of this I wanna see, it is a bit washed out on the stream
they were all over twitter, following jay on twitter.
It looks like such an awesome place to be
I was at SiliCon, and during the workshop, I was trying to use my Bluefruit app to try to connect to the DigiKey people's arc reactors and bend them to my will during the presentation. Couldn't make it work, sadly.
Hi all!
Basking in the glow of the arc reactor that I made at @Odd_Jayy ‘s workshop with @digikey It uses an @adafruit Circuit Playground and is a nice little build! @GeekMomProjects stepped hers up a notch and attached conductive tape to the touchpads, I wonder what’s in store ….
i saw your event pictures @lime falcon looks like you had a great time.
SillyDefCon
This is a meta question for @open girder: Streamyard now supports a new "share camera" feature but apparently it's something that has to be enabled on the host side. Is it possible to enable "share camera" in the future for ShowNTell?
wouldn't an easier way to share a 2nd camera by running obs studio?
easier if you know OBS 🙂 I've played with the "Share Camera" feature in Streamyard and it's a single button
use the virtual camera option and you can switch it yourself. it's really easy to setup.
pretty much how someone like JP would easily switch between cameras while streaming his workshop stuff.
yeah I've played with OBS but it's a whole other set of complication I'd like to avoid
the asic stuff is so far above my head i don't even know what it means. skerr has been playing with that stuff lately.
I have a whole list of words to look up later

JPDoomGuy!
Yes, it was a blast!!!
Hi, all!
SD Cards are quicksand slow compared to SSD
they have m.2 USB enclosures now though still bottlenecked by usb. it's a smaller form factor though.
Bunny puppet!
This would be a fun project add to one of those basic top-down scroller games. Your arm/hand becomes the "plane" type control
when I was building software on pi, an ssd was quite a bit nicer for speed
if you're doing work that does a lot of writing it particularly helps
it's like a 9dof visualizer, could be great for developing 9dof code for a microcontroller visually.
oh the m.2's are much faster than conventional ssd's now but if it's going to usb the only advantage would be space saving.
liz always has cool projects
wow that's huge @sage aspen! I can't wait to play with this remote editing stuff
the UI looks soooo much better @sage aspen very nice!
web workflow is the future of adafruit and it's looking gooood.
Thanks. It's live so you can play with it now.
i do have some spare boards i could play around with it. is there a learn guide you could post on how to get connected with web workflow?
awesome @robust horizon !
I love those last minute hey wait this is something cool I can do in an hour, and it just works
@robust horizon NICE turn old keyboards into useful input devices in an afternoon
I'll be working on a guide this next week, but I tried to have it give you the info you need to set it up on the site.
Just go to code.circuitpython.org and click Connect -> WiFi
i'm about to sit down and start playing with expanders and multiplexers. need more guides for those too. easy to use the on board gpio but when you need more things get complicated quick.
@robust horizon I may have looked in on your LED work and it is very cool, and gave me a great example while I've been trying to figure out some of the more advanced "how does this stuff build" concepts
Is the sound from a speaker, @low fractal @haughty quiver ?

following anne's adafruit correspondence on the shuttle launch on twitter has been great.
that's odd, circuitpython should NOT be telling the OS it's bootable
Once I proposed adding boot-bock tetris as an easter egg or april fools but it wasn't accepted
I've had this issue too. But not with every device I have plugged it.
:sadpanda: boot-block tetris would be cool.
moar audio stuff ❤️
I frequently boot my computer with a CircuitPython device plugged in (my keyboard) and while it's listed as a drive by the BIOS it doesn't affect the boot process for me
We must be talking about Windows trying to boot off of a CP board, right?
Yeah.
if this is happening to you (and you use github) please open an issue about it and let us know exactly what you're seeing
Windows laptop trying to boot on CP.
the USPS outage really cramped JP's pick of the week this week.
disclaimer: I'm pure linux
Maybe there's a way in Windows to disable booting on specific USB devices?
JP's elevator simulator. Lower floors on top.
Mine is windows and stops at bios? But, I have devices where there is no issue. My Macropad does it regularly, but not always.
I'm pretty sure there's a BIOS setting for that on at least some PCs
i love a good conspiracy theory
Good guess, great reminder, thanks!!!
I ordered a set of covid tests when I saw something about it on sunday

did you see the great scott tweet where digikey sent him an entire reel with 10 pieces on it? 😛

Question about ADA BOX @open girder Because of the product shortage, have you considered doing a previous ADA BOX or something like a “Lady Ada’s favorite things as a “filler” Just curious
okay now I want to boot my PC off CIRCUITPY
Do it!
not a bug, feature
ADA BOX? How about a community crate? A project based on things that are in stock.
MicroCircuitWindows easter egg

i don't think a beginner wants to register with github just to ask a question. i guess discord would get a ton more action then.
also if you have an account with an email you might get flooded on pull request like it happened with the private epic games repo recently..
good call, github could monetize the heck out of it and all those projects might not have a choice... mass revolt & migration. that would be a sad day, hopefully never happens.
Yay! 🎉 200th Python on Microcontrollers Newsletter!
i tried to signup for the newsletter last week, and it didn't work for whatever reason. no confirmation on the site, no email.
That is what I like the most with this discord, adafruit isn't asking me to only speak about adafruit products
I feel free to discuss my main hobby as much as I can
ok just tried to signup again just now and it worked.
yay stepswitch breakout! I like your Eagle footprint for it better than mine. Mine was very much the "I don't wanna spend more than 10 mins on this"
Those games were so amazing
re: n00ds. (a) no specs such as a datasheet. I need to know the shape so I can cut grooves in acrylic (b) can they be cut into shorter lengths (~30-35mm)?
i think you mean dimensions, because the shape can be fairly dynamic 😛
@plucky glen Datasheets often are added later. But ask again if they don't.
yeah having the width would be crucial for cutting grooves to slot them in.
sounded like that pick&place machine was sniffing the board
Also, datasheets can be inexact sometimes, so I often measure the actual product.
adafruit's come a long way from a toaster oven ❤️
solder pots are simultaneously so pretty and so gnarly
I often imagine the solder machines play cool music like in the videos
i imagine they make WOPR noises
this branch made circuitpython into a boot disk that runs TETRIS https://github.com/jepler/circuitpython/tree/tetros -- https://github.com/jepler/circuitpython/commit/e75cf983edbca7198408925ade6dea06b522c69d
It probably doesn't work on many new computers because it is BIOS only not UEFI
good time travel would be pulling up some old video of adafruit manufacturing on the toaster oven or other older footage.
Every Day is Halloween
@robust horizon Immediately filing a bug for booting my M1 MBP. /jk 🙂
pretty sure that's @low fractal 's daily mantra
but. can it display this stream?
yes
Still hard to get a PI though
you've never built a pi based media server or client? they work surprisingly well.
I was curious if Adafruit puts on an event similar to CircuitPython Day in NYC?
no, don't ever know what to do with mine
Can 3D printers make things that aren't skulls?
I should resell it for enough money to buy GE
they were available today for like.. an hour and sold out.
I'm always at work or something when they become available
I had to get mine in a kit though but I needed the things in a kit
new hot plates incoming... i saw kyguy was working on it in hw design... using 3d printed box though instead of all metal... not the best idea for a hot plate.
I've bought a whole bunch of Kemet & YAGEO products recently but they were all boring resistors & capacitors.
I remember learning about the Curie point when NeXT released the cube with the magneto-optical CD-RW...
Thermorite. Who knew?
thermorite... this is very informative
this would be great for heating element safety switches yeah. neat stuff.
i feel like this one is directed at kyguy's hot plate project to help him not burn down his house. 🙂
remreeds on a #1 ESS
if you don't get to get burned aerogel is allegedly one of the least thermal conducting stuff
in really old ovens i think they would actually just dangle in the oven bay on the rear wall. always wondered what that was for.
good for home brew reflow toaster ovens too.

love the animation
Omg the logo is great!
There you go.
QUESTION: Will the noods tolerate 3.3V?
not gonna miss that EL inverter noise
Are those noods chainable?
It's so like gambling. Love @open girder 's curation.
OMG
These are high-quality noods. This ain't onlyfans
❓ can they be chained?
So many project possibilities for these noods now that I can get them reliably.
I like how the n00ds looks like whips
If they operate like LEDs, just have to calculate resistor correctly to chain
animal cruelty in the youtube chat 😦
Why wouldn't they alternate?
One cool thing I've been testing - using "test points" like these to use as solder points on protoboards on each end of the noods:
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/keystone-electronics/1036/315152
"there is a front and back side to the noods" 😏
listing needs diameter/width specs on the product page for people doing 3d printed grooves for them.
I can fix it, I've got one of these...
@desert orbit could use these: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3823
I once got a microscope with just a mirror
@open girder : Question from @plucky glen : What is the diameter of the noods? They want to laser cut a channel to fit. Will there be a spec sheet?
20 years later I'm still trying to understand how it worked
🥧 🐮
pico w support will be huge because currently there really is only ESP for wifi. NRF does BLE but wifi kinda been ESP only for a long time.
Yeah! I forgot that Adafruit stocks those too! I've got some of these on the way from Digikey too:
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/keystone-electronics/1036/315152
PCB test points: A safe place for your proto-noods.
now that pico w is on the way can start with cow bell addons.
NYC has noods just everywhere on the street like that? 😮
How is that cup of n00ds coffee only half hot???
Streets, paved with noods...
Maxwell's Demon
thicc noods
TRON cosplay?
ohh deshipu's spider bots at night would probably be terrifying.
Ordered. Adafruit got me to pay for noods.
q: any suggestion for a constant-current driver breakout or chip to use with noods like these?
Q: what are the noods min/typ/max current?
I've been silently watching for a little bit, and I just want to say a huge thank you for the work that you (Adafruit & the community) do on CircuitPython!
I was thinking spiders too
Noods in a mint tin.
ooooh n00ds
Q: If I visit the factory, will you autograph my n00ds?
your noods would probably be too small to autograph, might need a scope.
AW9523 is currently out of stock 😢
throw a n00d on a NYPD police car just for the lewls
Expand your project possibilities, with the Adafruit AW9523 GPIO Expander and LED Driver Breakout - a cute and powerful I2C expander with a lot of tricks up its sleeve.GPIO expanders work ...
@open girder : Are both the 130mm and 300mm 50mA?
would be a great replacement for small neon signs for train model stuff.
q: any chance for short noods (26mm) in more color temps?
Light me like one of your french n00ds
Do these noods have an OF? 😄
tetros is by daniel-e and is a smaller-than-512-bytes implementation of tetris. https://github.com/daniel-e/tetros
here, tetros is added to a special CircuitPython build that makes it a bootable drive. https://github.com/jepler/circuitpython/tree/tetros
Your computer has to support old BIOS booting for this to work.
Q: can they be cut/shortend?
I wonder if all the micro LEDs are in parallel, so length doesn't matter, same current across them all
