That sounds dope
man, people really want some gold textured skin
I appreciate the reminder to finally finish this
I don't have control over the substances used, but I am working on something like this
That looks so.. noble and elegant
Btw for a glowing skin, its only that the shades are used differently in the animation or an actual lightning effect is added
or both
It should be with a little tiny animation, not just plane color
nahnahnahnah, I don't buy it
You worked your butt off on your favorite weapon only for a shiny wallpaper to be slathered over it? At least for me, it's a massive pet peeve I have towards weapons that use a single texture. It's boring and uninspired is what it is
Just because it's simple and easy, doesn't mean it's not good. I'd like a straight gold gun and really like it. I'd take a straight yellow colored gun and really like it.
New target: convince max
@late badge doesn't seem like it but gold (and other metallics) actually work quite well if executed correctly. I've gone through like 11 or 12 iterations and I'm still refining the accents/edges. Might be better to just make them as individual files for each weapon at this point.
Emissives would be nice to have just to round it out โจ
Here's my beef with Gold skins
You want this kind of skin. All gold, no variation, and even less design sense
Versus
Something like this
Care to tell me which one looks better?
Gold is a valuable metal. It's associated with honor, pride, and prestige
I'm not saying I don't want gold skins, but nothing like the way you've presented it to me
Honestly, idk why I'm getting worked up over this. I'm an artist, I can make this stuff myself
Don't take this the wrong way Maxbros, but your arguments against the straight gold skin are sounding a bit art snobby. I like everything you've presented, and also the straight gold skin. Give me all of them.
I swear, I make my points from design standpoints
That is kind of my point.
There are design principles and elements that should be implemented for a piece to be as appealing as possible
these are rules established within the art world that are known to and continue to work
I appreciate what you're adding to the ones you've shown, but the straight gold one is good too.

Here's the problem though, substances are not a thing in WB
This!
This^ up here
We can't do this in WB
We have no ray tracing
We have no substance painter
"rules established in the art world"
This is a low poly game, not the Louvre
We have no smart textures
And yet
These rules we still follow
I don't care what game we play, there are still design principles that are implemented for succeful designs
You can follow them if you want. We all don't have to
You make a skin then
Follow your mind
And you can tell me whether or not it looks good or not
Yes it sounds pretentious
Yes it sounds isolating
You can make all the skins you want. I assume they'll be great. Someone else can make the straight gold one and I'll love it too.
But these are established rules ironically designed to design the best design
Ok, let me put it this way then:
You may not know better, but I do. If it's within my control to optimize, it is within my responsibility to carry out
even more so if I've volunteered to begin work on such things or have already created them
I appreciate that you as a designer will follow these set of design principles. I'm just saying the WB gaming community as a whole does not have to
yeah
so at the end of the day, it's not you guys making this skin, it's people like zorka or sena. And I'd bet my bottom dollar that when they do, they often do it with such objectives in mind
I'd also like to go back real quick to a key aspect of my gripe with gold skins in WB
We have no smart substances
Every texture in WB is based on a single material
Not those differently colored skins or 2d textures that you see when your heli has a camo or the cashier's register.
It's the kinda stuff that makes metal look shiny and plastic look dull
Under any other circumstances, should these applications be available, yeah it'd be astoundingly easy to texture
actually, gimme a minute. Lemme get a gold texture on the SMG rq
Now, I can appreciate these technical arguments about difficulties
Alright, for anyone interested, this here is called Substance painter
I can apply a bunch of smart textures here to give the material a different texture
here's a really basic gold texture
you can see on the left side, it's a simple polished metal texture
Here's a smart texture gold
A bit more vibrant, and a richer color
The point I'm trying to make here is that gold is gold because it's distinctively shiny
Without any of that shine, it just looks like a matte clay sort of texture
So in order to subvert that, it's recommended to add other things so that it brings out what makes gold such a special material
Honestly, the simple variation looks better
just a few points from me:
- generally gold looks good with black or white accents, generally with a material like marble to show wealth
- gold isn't always "shiny" as that can depend on its purity and if it is polished
- with the cartoon style of WB, gold should be replicated best with smart use of colours in the texture to imply the existence of some level of shimmer as a metallic surface
- aiming to apply special effects to weapons decreases chances of getting such a weapon skin, or rather how soon one could be earned, I think that a plain skin is fine
- any "FX" can be left for perhaps a "platinum" level or so, where the gold stage is enhanced further for reaching your 4th tier, whatever it may be called; we have no tier past gold, so it means that there's just room left open here to expand down the line if it's called for
Can be pretty easily faked though
True. But the environment helps a bit in both making it more convincing and smoothing out some visual inconsistencies.
Slight bright noise + accents + emphasized edges make it a little better than that
Let me pull out a mockup I made a while back
Have I ever said no? ๐

I'll be back at my machine next week
0 work on the grip or really anything other than the top, but kinda like that
Not anywhere near perfect though ๐
I'll dm you then. I've got some sketches layed out
