Mod applications are not necessary imo. They pick someone they trust, ask if they're interested, if not, they look for another one. Just like you probably do on your own servers.

First of all, you should not compare thise server to other servers. Mods are picked by trust. They know exactly who they want in their team. Also, the server is not always active like 24/7. Most of the time I see a mod online, or I know a mod is lurking.
I don't find applications necessary. This will only give them more work to filter out the right applications from the right persons. In other words, why looking through applications if you already know who to ask.

The developers are struggling with time management all the time, it's avoidable effort. The staff is too small than they could affort it.

there are many others who have been here for a long time and just write an application, and the staff spends a heck lot of time reading/analysing/rejecting 100s of them, by spending time they could use in doing something productive IRL, or to the game

Best application is being a good person and community figure. If they need a mod, they have current moderators to recommend certain people. Your behaviour and positive reputation should be your application.

Yes, and back to my point, mod application seems unnecessary as the mod team + devs will pick who they trust and who they want in their team. The server is too small to have like 20 mods to handle the server.

And who is going to look through all applications of people that just aren't eligible. From 100 applications, only 1 may be good. (Which they probably already had in mind to ask). Waste of time in my opinion.

Oh we are very aware how people behave, interact and come along with others. Who have the persona to help the devs and what they provide in general. How they converse on daily basis, are they how invested etc. An application would be a polished picture of the real personality.

Absolutely, there are great people suiting for moderators. Some though are a bit busy and can't put in the time, so they turn down the offers. But then again some take the offer to share the load as via natural exhange older mods have change of interest and move on.
