I heard about the insane map size, I don't think that for my project the "large" setting is enough.

I want to know everything about it, What are its Pros and Cons?

And the most important question for me is, Can I change the map size of a map which I already am working on?

so

#

you can change the size of the map yes

#

pros for insane is

#

you got tons of content

#

cons are

#

most people wont play it

#

it'll be laggy

#

and it'll take years to develop

#

large is most likely more than enough

#

as you can also go a little bit outside of the map borders

I can lay out pros and cons in a bit

#

There are some advantages but if I was to ever make a new map, I’d make it a large for several reasons

#

The only reason I made an insane sized map is because I wanted to spread out locations. Not add more. The intention was to make roads and landscape and the experience of the map unique which is one pro of an insane sized map

#

The foliage and land is a key ingredient to a good insane sized map

#

A little more later I’ll send my full list

Pros and cons of an insane sized map:

Pros:

  1. Due to the size you can create some amazing landmasses
  2. Locations can be spread out which lends to engulfing the player
  3. You can add more locations and things to do
    Cons:
  4. you can’t place stuff outside the border of the map as it is at the cutoff of the games hardcoded limit
  5. Maps can be laggy at this size so optimization is a big concern. I’d recommend rebundling assets and optimize them or finding better optimized mods
  6. Foliage file gets really big because there is just so much more data to store
  7. It’s a lot of work. 4.5^2 miles of map is a lot and takes a lot of time.
  8. If your insane sized map is more than 50% water, just make a large map
  9. It’s just not really necessary for most use cases. Only reason I did an insane sized map is because I saw a key problem in roleplay maps where they were all small and it only took about a minute to travel from one large city to another. I set out to change that and with an insane sized map, that is possible. Now I have some roads that take 10+ minutes to get to another city. That’s my goal for a unique experience. It helps keep players in certain places of interest and allows for plenty of exploration.
