#Weekly maintenance shouldn't ping game news

Just as described; when there's nothing to read because there's no actual news, I don't think the Game News role should be pinged. Posting an unpinged message is good for reference, but this really isn't news if it's just a weekly thing with no new information!

Ping management is a nuisance for people who have lots of servers they are keeping up with, and things like this that nearly double a server's ping count make me want to remove a ping role altogether and just manually check the news.

Agreed

The maintenance lasting longer isnt news?

they are also pinging for just normal maintenance and pinging every time after the 30 minutes of maintenance are over, its just spam imo #game-news message

there is already a channel that shows the server status, weekly maintenance is weekly so nothing new even if its a bit longer

#

If you guys really think that weekly maintenance and servers being up is ping worthy, maybe consider adding a new role called "maintenance updates" or "server status"

Fair

We've also had a means to check the server status for extensions on update downtime for a while already

The games news channel is for any news about the status of the game and I feel information about maintenance and downtimes would be pretty relevant to that.

If you just wanted in-game updates though you could get notifications only from https://discord.com/channels/324132423636090880/1405134750821388479 which only messages when there's patch notes.

But that means missing out on all the other news, like for polls and previews and that's really not ideal!
This maintenance alone got three pings- one announcing when it was going to be, one announcing the start, and one announcing the end.

You are not even doing that many for full content updates, so I'm not sure why there need to be three for just a very short downtime window that's also at the same time every week!

It's starting to impact my usability of the tag, as someone who looked forward to the role pings prior to this; it just feels bad to have my response to seeing the red circle go from "oh yay, more OSRS news!" to "ugh, is this just another maintenance spam notification?"

Anyway, I'm posting this here because I'm assuming I can't be the only one who feels this way. Maybe at the very least limit the pings to pointing out when the game is going to be down for longer than usual?

Yeah if there was one ping for a longer than usual maintenance i wouldnt complain. But two pings for the scheduled maintenance at the same time every week and a third one for the extended is just a bit ridiculous, since the weekly maintenance became a thing i also considered removing the role because its just so annoying. There is really no downside to creating a new role for people who would like to be pinged for these kinds of things except 5 minutes of work for a moderator

It's also redundant a lot of the time since #🟢online is already a great way to check if the game servers are up

#

If it is important to document for some reason, then I think it's also reasonable to still post it in the #game-news channel without pinging the role

# blissful wolf If it is important to document for some reason, then I think it's also reasonabl...

I think it is important information for a lot of people as even now during maintenance or the 45 minutes before an update, many users ask in chat questions like "How long?" and "What's the downtime?" in the chat channels even though all the information is available https://discord.com/channels/324132423636090880/693170141071933471

Having said that though, that is an intersting idea to keep posting the news but not ping. To be a bit more specific, what types of game-new would you want pings for and what types of news would you not want pings for?

I think that no matter how hard you try to make the information available, you're still going to always have people just not reading anything before asking; that's just the way of these things.

Really the only things that I would say definitely do not warrant news pings are when there's no new information to share. If, for example, maintenance were significantly longer than usual (say an extra half hour or more) or at a different time than usual, such that it could reasonably be expected force a change in schedule for clan events, raiding, or similar, then that is new information that I suspect some people would appreciate being notified about in advance, which may warrant calling attention to it.

So with the maintenance pings that you had issue with from what I can see.

  1. Had new information as there was an extended downtime.
  2. Had no new information and could lose the ping.
  3. Had new information regarding lost herbs being returned.

So you would only lose one of those pings.

I was actually thinking moreso about what type of game news you'd want or not want like:

  • Game update news
  • Upcoming content news
  • Maintenance news
  • Any changes or issues happening to the game servers

Upcoming content, poll information, and game updates are all important news to me and I think these are in keeping with a ping role called Game News.

I should amend my prior statement slightly- if weekly maintenance is consistently going to take an inconsistent amount of time, then I'm not sure that warrants a news ping every time in my opinion, and perhaps is better placed somewhere accessible for people looking to find it. If this is only an occasional thing (like with the downtime for fixing herb sack issues) then the role ping makes much more sense to me.

I personally do not mind news on much besides weekly maintenance starting and ending, I know there are others who may prefer to have server status updates (maintenance, outages) unpinged.

(Especially considering the downtime is timed to affect as few people as possible in the first place)

We can have a look at making sure not to use the ping too much back to back 🙂 we can understand it feeling a little much in a short space of time!

3 pings again for scheduled maintenance with no irregularities 😢

This isn't something we're going to change when at the standard cadence we had this week. It falls under game news and is important information. Sorry about that.

blissful wolf
#

Then I guess I'm not following news pings any more

#

I do think it's better to consider whether doing things this way is actually in keeping with what people expect from the role rather than adhering to some arbitrary technical definition, but if decision has been made then that's that

Agreed, i think this many pings for something which is completely inconsequential and could be/is already handled in different way is completely counterproductive to the purpose of the role. But yeah ig its done
