After opening the crate, and drinking its contents, this does not show as updated in the Captain's Log, nor any xp reward. Also, upon returning to the crate, and trying to drink it again, this is no longer possible as I receive a message saying that I have already sampled the contents. So it's now an unrewarded, incompleteable sea charting task.

check that the crate for the menaphite sea has been checked off, which i suspect is the one youre talking about. theres a crate thats pretty much directly south of menaphos but isn't the one you want for bay of elidnis charting. the crate you do what is near some rocks furth southwest-ish
