Is that true even if your character hasn’t talked with the NPC before? I didn't receive a message in game chat or at the top of my screen. I may have skipped the intended guidance system by fully charting before talking with the charting NPC.

You have to speak to him to claim the xp again, its not a popup xp. Its like a diary reward.
