#Does Real World Symbolism Belong in Gielinor?

This post is to show alternatives to controversal topics in osrs. I'm biased so Im puting these ideas out there as an alternative to keeping OSRS an unpolitical escape from the real world.

  1. Opt-In Celebrations

How it helps: Keeps the base game focused while allowing those who want to celebrate to do so.

Examples:

Cosmetic overrides (like Pride capes or holiday outfits) available via a toggle, not shown by default. If players want to not see this content in-game let them.

Optional events or minigames tied to real-world awareness months, accessible via an NPC or menu. Not by default.

  1. Lore-Integrated Events

How it helps: Keeps real-world themes grounded in the fantasy world of Gielinor.

Instead of a “Pride Event,” you could have:

A celebration of different clans, races, or cultures within the game's lore.

NPCs talking about harmony between kingdoms or species—still reflects diversity, but stays in-universe.

  1. Neutral Language, Broad Focus

How it helps: Prevents alienating players who want to avoid political connotations.

Emphasize values like respect, kindness, teamwork without attaching them to specific real-world movements.

Focus community messages on shared player experiences: overcoming challenges, helping others, etc.

  1. Community Polling Before Messaging

How it helps: Empowers the community to decide what belongs in their game.

Use the existing polling system to ask:

“Would you support adding [event/cosmetic] to the game?”

Include options like “Make it opt-in only,” or “Add lore-friendly version.”

  1. In-Game Filters or Channels

How it helps: Lets players control their exposure to non-game content.

Add toggleable filters:

Hide community announcement broadcasts.

Separate “social updates” from “game updates” in the news feed.

  1. Consistency Across Topics

How it helps: Prevents accusations of favoritism or selective activism by applying the same standards to all causes.

If OSRS chooses to recognize Pride or other real-world causes, it sets a precedent. To maintain fairness, Jagex should either:

Recognize a wide range of groups and events (e.g., mental health awareness, Veterans Day, regional or religious holidays), or

Keep the game focused on in-universe events and avoid real-world alignment entirely.

For example, if Pride is framed as celebrating love, unity, or identity—why not channel those same values into existing in-game events like Valentine’s Day or custom lore-driven holidays that apply to everyone?

If Jagex adopted a few of these ideas, they could support their diverse player base without alienating those who prefer the fantasy escapism OSRS is known for.

I’m a big OSRS fan, but I’d really prefer if the Discord branding stayed neutral. I want to represent the game, not real-world causes, even if well-intentioned. It’d be great if support for things like Pride was optional or separate, instead of the entire server being themed around it.

Seems like you didn't really let it go like you promised in the other thread, huh. Displaying a banner change to support inclusion of minorities doesn't quite scream 'entire server theme' if I have to be honest, and branding it as 'optional or seperate' also feels to me like you'd rather not see the minorities in question receive the support. The existence of human beings is not woke, nor political. Maybe particular celebrations are, and can be, seen as politically motivated, but I don't think showing support to a minority through a rainbow flag in a month that's known for additional support towards said minority is inherently political either. Especially not if you start your post by calling celebrating human diversity 'woke'.

I’m trying to offer a neutral, game-focused perspective here. I haven’t attacked anyone and I expected the same respect back.

I’m not here to argue against individuals or their right to exist—I’m here to say I don’t want real-world causes, regardless of what they are, taking center stage in RuneScape. That includes Pride, political campaigns, or any other movement.

Wanting RuneScape to stay apolitical isn’t about ignoring people—it’s about keeping the game an escape for everyone, including those who don’t want real-world messaging mixed in.

I disabled DMs because I’m not interested in being personally targeted or dragged into private debates over a view I shared calmly and respectfully. I hope future discussions can stay on-topic and civil.
