I feel the ancient spellbooks is enough.

Kinda like what the Kalphite Queen can cast

tough relic
#

Burst/barrage spells already exist for this

trail coyote
#

thats like saying chins already exist why bother using a venator bow anywhere

tough relic
#

What is the purpose for needing a magic equivalent to the venator bow?

#

If you want people to consider this suggestion, it would help to give a reason other than “it’s really cool”.

I just think mage is in a good spot with ancient since it does AOE damage and additional effects that differentiates it from other AOE attacks like the melee horizontal, chins only damage, and venator bouncing.

If every attack style had a weapon that all did the same thing but different damage type, it would make the game kinda boring imo.

trail coyote
#

some things are weak to magic, and another way to train magic with combat, everyone just splashes seagulls or whatever

tough relic
#

I’m not against the idea, but I don’t see the need for the game to just make a mage equivalent to the venator bow. Every weapon should have a unique identity

#

There are already so many ways to train magic. Not to mention that bursting/barraging is the fastest way to train already

trail coyote
#

people use a large variety of melee weapons for slayer, variety of range weapons for slayer, pretty much just barrage things for maging slayer tasks

tough relic
#

Also, for things weak to magic, people would just barrage them

#

I wouldn’t call bp and venator bow much of a variety

#

And for melee, it’s basically just the whip for general slayer

trail coyote
#

cannon

tough relic
#

Regardless, I’m still not seeing any good reason why someone would use a mage venator bow over barraging

tough relic
#

Any content that’s multi and weak to magic would get barraged

trail merlin

[[Goading potion]]

candid emberBOT
tough relic
#

Venator bow already serves that purpose or use a goading potion

#

Don’t see the need for a redundant weapon

trail coyote

Bud

trail merlin
#

That's not really 'variety'

tough relic
#

No main is going to be using a rapier, fang or salad blade for general slayer

#

Unless they’re loaded

#

Likewise with the bludgeon

trail coyote
#

i literally never see anyone use a whip

#

those are what i see

trail merlin
#

I mean, loaded or not, claiming that rapier and blade, two of the smallest upgrades you could possibly make for slayer

#

Is
a.) common
b.) 'variety'

#

Is crazy

tough relic
#

Either they are iron man, rich or making a poor decision then

#

The fang sucks for general slayer

trail coyote
#

not my business what decisions they make lol

tough relic
#

Bludgeon isn’t any better than a whip in most cases

#

Rapier and salad blade are just over priced

trail coyote
#

thats what i see walking through slayer locations

trail merlin
#

Those weapons all serve the same function and have functionally the same dps for all intents and purposes

tough relic
#

Point being, melee works fine with a whip

trail merlin
#

That's not really 'variety'

tough relic
#

And you have still not answered the one thing that I’ve repeated asked for. What’s the purpose of a mage venator bow

trail merlin
#

It's not 'variety' if you see someone using a blowpipe with amethyst darts and another guy using a blowpipe with rune darts

tough relic
#

More variety, less intensity and really cool are all bad reasons

rocky skiff
#

If the range on bounces could be even just 1 tile further than ven bow for the proposed magic I think I could see myself using this for tasks that are 2x2 monsters

tough relic
#

Just an fyi, the venator bow does work on 2x2 mobs

rocky skiff
#

It's kinda iffy but yeah it does

tough relic
#

Would be nice if it did get a +1 range, but that would giga buff its usability in Colo

#

It’s already the best dps weapon in Colo if you can get it to bounce 2 times

#

It’s only held back by most mobs being 3x3

magic cliff

Okay but hear me out

#

Lightning spell

#

Chain lightning

#

Let it bounce to a few targets

#

It can never bounce to a target that has already been hit by the spell

#

And after the first target hit the damage drops per tile traveled to hit the next target

#

Ngl you'd have to make a whole ass different Spellbook

#

I've been saying for ages we need a druid/cleric Spellbook in the game

#

Nature and Holy magic

I like this idea, i know Ancients Exist but mage is prohibitively expensive in general and the idea behind venator bow was that it's a dirt cheap AOE.

So something cheaper than ancients, with less targets but a longer bounce range than venators (1 tile? 2 Tiles?) Would be pretty neat and fill a completely different niche than ancients do.

#

It's 2025 and they still haven't given the Mage's book the same rune discount as the other two items

#

The only potential staff worth using can't even use a level 95 spell

#

And the game has become tridentscape

#

Twinflame could have absolutely been the multi -target staff, in fact it would work better for the royal titans if it did

trail merlin
#

What other two items

stark kindle
#

Staff of the dead and kodai. When Mage's book is the perfect item to add this to

trail merlin
#

Why, it's an off-hand

#

There's no reason to make that comparison at all

#

"SotD and Kodai have it, it's CRIMINAL that an item in a completely different gear slot doesn't"

#

I just don't follow the logic

#

Or what that has to do with this post at all

stark kindle
#

Well first, your a bit overreacting to this. Second, the complaint was that there wasn't more utility to mage. There's ancients, sure, but aside from that no other multi target spells

#

Mage, supposedly being the utility class, has a limited amount of actual utility in pvm, and for dps is just all tridents

#

(again, ignoring ancients)

trail merlin
#

I don't know why you're saying I'm overreacting, seems like a pretty straightforward question

#

Trying to figure out how what you're saying was related to the discussion subject

dense ridge
#

a chain lightning spell could be neat.

stark kindle
#

Twinflame was the closest the game came to this, except it's nothing more than an invisible 40% strength staff - had the 2nd shot hit another target (or the same if none around) it would have been the solution here

#

Right, which twinflame could have been. 100% + 40%

magic cliff
#

It's just pure chaos

#

It prioritizes the closest mobs but might randomly shoot for a further away mob and pull them instead

#

Would be funny

stark kindle
#

There is so much potential with offhands/jewelry that could augment spellbooks. The confliction gauntlets could have been the solution to spellbook spells being so inaccurate. Offhands were a potential damage increase. And there's always the occult upgrades

narrow dagger

its not hard to know why magic is in the state it is.
1). Powered staves cast faster
2). Powered staves scale on total magic level
3). Powered staves are expensive as hell compared to melee or ranged

Aside from a very select amount of content, it's just better for me to use ranged/melee instead of magic and venator's bow unironically bites into a lot of content magic was good at before. I'd really love a low damage 4-5 tile jumping range multi target magic aoe spell.

#

Perhaps something that costs a variable amount of runes depending on how many times it bounced. Chain lightning that cost 1 death to cast but then took an additional 10 mind runes for every additional target. Honestly something to suck up mind runes would be great.

burnt kayak
#

I like this idea, not quite sure how but I'm open to it.

stark kindle
#

Problem with this, becomes if it is a staff, then it has to compete with options like trident, saying, the new staff coming out, twin flame, shadow. And if it is a jewelry item, then care has to be taken to make sure it doesn't affect already multi-target spells like barrage or burst. So now you just have an item that turns single Target spells into weaker ancients

narrow dagger
#

Why not just a spellbook spell then? Could be an arceuus spell, could even upgrade grasp spells for example and be fine (since its way shorter stun than ice spells)

bronze folio
#

Maybe not an item, but a new set of spells that works a little bit like Chain Lightning (from world of warcraft). Where it hits your target, and then chains to up to 3 nearby targets. It could chain within 3 tiles of each chain target?

I guess it could literally just be called Chain Lightning, and maybe put it in archeuus or ancient spellbook. It could have 4 ranks at different magic levels. Each rank could increase number of chain targets, as well as base damage of spell.
Rank 1: 3 targets
Rank 2, 4 targets
Rank 3, 5 targets
Rank 4, 6 targets

The benefit of using this rather than barrage is flexibility against larger targets that are harder to stack

vital swan
#

game doesn't need bouncing barrages, already op as is

rocky skiff
#

barrage is like chinchompa, this suggestion is more like the venator bow of magic

bronze folio
# vital swan game doesn't need bouncing barrages, already op as is

To be clear, the chain hits dont do AOE damage, they simply chain from one target to the nearest, dealing damage to that, and so on. So one cast of rank 4 chain lightning would deal 7 instances of damage (main target + up to 6 chain hits). For reference, barrage spells can hit up to 9 targets within a 3x3 area, so chain lightning would actually slightly worse than barrage against 7+ stacked targets.
Also, the spell shouldn't be able to bounce between the same targets multiple times. With only 2 nearby enemies, you only get 2 hits.

bronze folio
#

Also this:
Unless the game engine would be able to support instant chains, or faster than 1 tick per target, each chain would (probably?) take 1 in-game tick to propagate.
Casting speed of spells is 5 ticks. I think this could potentially cause issues with higher chain amounts, so perhaps rank 4 should be 4 chain targets after all.

I agree, it would be cool – just as any new spell with interesting new (or new to the skill, at least) mechanics would be a cool addition to the game. Introducing a mid-level spell '(e.g. Chain Bolt') or an item that modifies the effects of certain spells to allow them to bounce between more targets, would be absolutely fine with me.

That said, perhaps you could flesh out the suggestion a bit more, turning it into something more concrete than just "this would be cool"-suggestion, leaving it up to us to interpret what it could be.

For instance, are you thinking of a low, medium, or high level spell – or one in every category? Which spellbook would it be in? Is it even a spell or is it a staff, or perhaps even another item that modifies an existing spell? What would the cost in Runes be – would every target add to the cost? And so on.
