#What if sailing is optional?

Nobody is forcing you to max either
And “maxing” without being the highest skill level is also a crazy concept
Like most content in the game, no one is forcing you to do it if you don't want to
I'm sure you could make a runelite plugin to hide it client side if you feel that strongly about the new skill that a large majority of the player base actively wants and voted for
You could be right in the short term like a grace period, but say after 6 months, it should no longer be optional and be established content
Sailing has caused you Emotional damage
My advice to you is to try the skill out before you start asking for it to be treated differently from any other skill.
Man I really don't like agility, but I want a max cape. They should just give players max capes even if they didn't train agility. Same thing for runecrafting, herblore, firemaking...
I really don't like melee combat either but so much pvm content requires it. Jagex should let me do all of the content in the game with magic so I don't need melee stats or deal with positioning my character
I also don't like forestry and the changes to trees, so I'd like a toggle option that makes trees work how they used to (even if it lets me troll other players by chopping their tree down without the timer)
Also when I pk, players are teleporting away with a free seed pod they got from new content, and I don't like that so they should remove that reward from questing
Also I think mining is too slow of a skill, they should poll a x2 increase in exp for the skill. It'll probably pass because players want free cookies
Also this new boss is dropping gear that'll make content like inferno slightly easier. I want a special cape to prove I did it before this update
That new boss also has combat achievements, but I used to have the hard ones done and now I can't use the hilt I already got. I don't want to do the new content so I want jagex to let me keep the rewards anyway
Maybe this is a bit long winded but I hope you see my point. This is an MMO that luckily still gets updates, and the devs listen to and directly interact with the community (much more than any other game I know of). There's a limit to what's reasonable to expect and what's good for the game. If you don't like an update that most of the community wants and/or will make the game better, then honestly suck it up and stop moping. It's already coming to the game
This suggestion also just makes it so even more people when then cry, when new BIS gear is released that requires you to go to an island with sailing, even if that only requires 5 sailing to get there.
What if a new quest gets released, that requires sailing levels? Do we also just give quest cape to everyone now wanting to do the new quests?
What if a new slayer creature gets added to an island, and that slayer creature has a qol update? is that not allowed to be added because then this new snowflake account you are creating cant access that?
This whole suggestions just adds sooooo much crying to any update coming to the skill afterwards aswell
The real problem here is that the max cape turned into an omni-qol item and now people cannot shut up about how anything that takes it away from them is ontologically evil
this is also why I never want a comp cape in osrs and why I never want a moving clog rank to mean anything mechanically
People are forgetting that before the new owners, the last investment fund that owned Jagex had implemented a plan to release a new skill every 2 to 3 years as a way to pull new players in with the whole point in creating more cash flow. Now I can’t speak on the new owners of Jagex but I’d say prepared for more skills down the road
Good, more skills over time is actual old school
Anything you say Zamor I doubt it’s going to cut it. The investors want their money
besides that comment though, you have had quite a few people with different ways to say why its a bad idea, and why people are against it
This thread is the physical manifestation of players downvoting every new skill so they don't lose their max capes.
I don't think the max capes are the issue tbh. That could be fixed by giving current owners a "grace period". I would give them 6 months to max out sailing before they lose their ability to wear the max capes.
Blind hatred is the issue. The same people saying that sailing should be walked back are the ones who were saying that project rebalance was "bringing EOC to OSRS" a few months ago.
I suspect the answer is much less complicated. It's about value (or percieved value) of a maxxed account.
OSRS over the last few years has grown enough of an audience that it can outvote people who otherwise want to retain maxxed characters, or people who consider maxxed characters a valuable asset. If you think about account sellers, realize how many maxxed accounts now will require hundreds of hours of work before they can hit the value point of having a maxxed cape again.
If you reconsider this issue as a money problem, as people mentally believing they are losing money over this change and perhaps they actually are. The reaction makes much more sense than "blind hatred"
I'm sure there will be a runelite plugin for you to hide it.
Pretty sure Jagex has also explicitly stated they would not do a grace period in a Q&A a while back
Well-written and I agree, the rewards from maxing/etc. and new methods have definitely made people feel entitled to maxing especially but also other stuff.
Surely what we need with sailing is the 2350 worlds
