#Repurposing the area west of Falador

I created an infographic with nice pictures to explain what my idea is exactly, you cand find it here on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1j0napt/repurposing_the_area_west_of_falador/

The idea boils down to repurpose the area that contains the west Falador mine and the dark wizard's tower.
Currently this member-only area is honestly dead content, people go there for the Fairy Tale quest and run through it to get to Taverly or Taverly dungeon. (not certain if there are any clue steps here)
The mine consists of tin, copper, iron and coal... All of which can be mined at better locations in the member world.
The dark wizard's tower houses some NPCs with drops that are not even that desirable in f2p.

This is why I would like to propose making this area f2p and adding the following.

Map changes:

  • Turn the crumbling wall into a proper gate and put some guards there to lessen the load from the north gate.
  • Remove the fence/wall that connects the Falador city wall to the lake in the north of this area.
  • Add an old, broken fence or a different kind of divider between Taverly dungeon and Falador, I would say between the lake and the sea.
  • This divider could have an agility shortcut with the same requirements as the Falador citywall shortcut currently has.

New gear:

  • Dark tower robes, consisting of a hood, robe top and robe bottom.
  • These would have the same stats as Xerician, maybe weighing a bit more, being the same weight as regular dark wizard robes.
  • These would drop from the dark wizards from the dark wizard tower where the higher level wizards would have a higher chance of dropping them.
  • Visually, the gear would look similar to the robes the tower NPCs currently wear.
  • Blue and dark wizard robe bottoms, because, I mean... complete this set already!
  • Stats would be the same as dark squall robe bottoms, these are meant to be a cosmetic variant after all.
  • Trimmed versions would receive these stats as well, can't have the regular versions outperform the fancy ones!

Miscellaneous (mainly me nitpicking and not that important to this suggestion):

  • Naming of dark wizard set, currently this consists of Wizard Hat, Black robes and Black skirt.
  • I would suggest following the dark squall set in this and name it Dark wizard hat, dark wizard robe top and dark wizard robe bottom
  • Trimmed versions would be adjusted accordingly as well to make things consistent.
  • Recolor either the dark wizard hat or the dark wizard robe top/bottom... make this consistent, pls?

your reddit post does a lot better job of explaining the suggestion than this discord post does

to sum up the suggestion:

  • Make the area west of Falador F2P
  • Add proper wizard robe bottoms to F2P (both blue and dark variants)
  • Make the dark wizard hat and robes have matching colors and names, currently they are inconsistent
  • Add a new BiS F2P mage armor that drops from the dark wizards in the tower, same stats as xerician armor

I will be the bold one and say give access to Taverly and Burthorpe as well. And Death Plateau. Taverly Dungeon access up to the dusty key section as well.

Basically no Heros or Warriors Guild, everything past the dusty key section, and Rogues Den.

And they could easily close off White Wolf Mountain with a small rockslide

But yeah, it would be a nicer way to separate f2p and p2p

I'm firmly in the camp of letting Taverly being made f2p as well

Personally I'm in the camp of keeping Taverley in P2P.

You lost me at f2p. I don't see a reason to commit any dev work to expanding the f2p offerings: It already has more than enough content to show people the game as a demo so they can make the decision to buy membership.

Regarding the wizard robe stuff: I commented on a suggestion regarding this a while back with some example stats, where it could still be good for F2P without necessarily encroaching on the Zamorak robes:

I think it might be too much to try and make them comparable to Xerician robes, though.

I think it's fair to want more Magic F2P gear - agree on the perspective that Magic doesn't have enough compared to Melee or Ranged in F2P.

I think my dislike is if the Dark/Black wizard robes had these stats, since I think they should just be a cosmetic variant of Blue wizard robes.

If there's some other way to design F2P Magic gear though, I'd definitely be up for that. I think I've discussed with some other players about this, and the best idea we came up with is if there were a Runecraft method to "imbue" (or something) the Black/Blue wizard robes into new Air/Water/Earth/Fire wizard robes worn by the elemental wizards south of Falador.

I don't see why we couldn't have both. Robes with stats and requirements similar to Xerician, though rarer and weighing more. This would make the Dark tower robes available earlier in progression, but Xerician still better and cheaper on the GE, due to it being a byproduct of farming Lizardmen.

Elemental robes could be made by imbueing regular wizard robes with the elemental essence dropped by those elemental wizards using runecrafting, making robes with the same stats, but having a set bonus that would boost the corresponding elemental spell, making it better dps-wise, but worse in defence or flexibility. Zammy monk would be the go-to mage prayer gear.

There might also be some merit into bringing regular splitbark to f2p... But I haven't really looked into that yet.

This would make a f2p mage gear that is varied and interesting, enticing people further to see what p2p has to offer even more and giving cool, but ignored p2p gear purpose.

# nimble perch It's mostly that I don't know what Dark wizard robes would look like. Presumably...

I don't know if you looked at my suggestion on Reddit, it is pretty clear there.

First there's the Blue/Black Wizard Bottom I suggested, these would look the same as the Blue/Black Skirt does now, with the same stats as a Dark Squall Robe Bottom, which are the same as your suggestion (I also liked your dark hood suggestion).

I must say that Dark Wizards now look different from what they did in the past, which the current set is based on. Currently they sport 2 different looks, a black/grey one that can be found all over Gielinor and a black/red one they wear in the Dark Wizard's Tower.

My suggestion is to use this black/red model to add a completely new set called the Dark Tower Robes set. These would be dropped exclusively from the dark wizards in the Dark Wizard's Tower and would have the same stats and requirements as Xerician robes (only being heavier, sharing their weight with the current Black Wizard Robes set).

These would make a slightly worse and rarer alternative to Xerician robes, with the upside being that they could be farmed a lot earlier in the game.
Economically, these would not be cheaper, as Lizardmen get farmed for their other drops, while these wizards would only have the dark tower robes as point of interest.

Also, my bad, but I tend to mix dark wizard and black wizard terms when describing these, as I believe the black wizard set should be renamed to dark wizard set for the sake of consistency. This is why I gave my suggested set a completely different name to differentiate.

Ohh, my apologies. I've just fixed the Reddit rendering images on my end, and everything now makes sense.

I definitely agree on the weird colour issue between the Black wizard hat and the Black wizard robes. That's one of the reasons I suggested a Black wizard hood - that would make much more sense for the costume in both the colour and the general Dark wizard look.

I didn't actually realise the Dark wizards in the Dark Wizard Tower have a different look, so your idea of Dark tower robes makes sense now (it is indeed a bit confusing between Black/Dark wizard/Dark tower/etc.) I think for this black-and-red set, yes, I don't see any issue with it being on par-ish with Xericien robes.
