People get tips, not companies. If there was an assurance that my money went EXCLUSIVELY to the people who actually make the game (and not at the detriment of their actual salaries or benefits!), the ones that have Blender or Visual Studio on their computers, I might consider it, but if it's just giving money "to Jagex" I wouldn't for a second. Without a system of accountability, all that money is just going to go straight into the coffers of the moneymen.

Jagex is a profitable company, it makes enough money to sustain itself. If it isn't content with the amount it's making now, voluntarily handing them more money for the same service you're already getting is only telling them that they haven't charged you enough yet.

jagex are plenty profitable with plenty good margins. they arent hurting for cash. these aggressive monetization schemes have much more to do with upper management like Pip and venture capital like the owners CVC wanting to squeeze out paychecks for themselves and shareholders even if it is to the detriment of the game and the community’s goodwill. even if we could sub to a jmod patreon or whatever, the people in charge would still be looking to line their pockets with similar methods. at best this survey was probing what level of dark patterns and predatory rent seeking schemes the playerbase will tolerate (see how there are already people saying ‘ads are fine on f2p actually’), so i dont think this would solve anything.

Absolutely this. The whole "donation" idea reeks of someone who doesn't understand how corporations work.

There is no upper bound on profit - if they thought they could charge a billion dollars, that's what they would do. They make the maximal possible amount of money at all costs, no matter who they piss off.

It doesn't matter how much the service costs to provide, or how much investment it took to make, or how much it's worth, or even how profitable they expect it to be 5-10 years down the line, it's just about extracting the maximum level of money.
