Hello not quite technical but sorta, I don't see why there is a CB restriction for the quest Dream Mentor?? I know I can do it on my lvl 76
wont let me even go in the cave to start the quest
and I do not want my CB up atm
why put restrictions?? at leeeeeast an " are you sure" prompt
I feel stuck
please let me do this quest on my current state >.<
im ready

I would like a lift on the combat req for level for Dream Mentor

placid harness
#

I mean it makes sense both lore and gameplay wise to have a CB req, in what way would it make the game or the quest better to remove it? Besides you being slightly inconvenienced

#

Quests being a progression path that gives you goals to achieve is a very good thing, you get on a slippery slope when you want to remove requirements. "Why does this quest need 70 woodcutting, i can easily do the rest of the quest now but i dont wanna train woodcutting"

#

Lines are impossible to draw

noble scarab
#

dude you asked about this like 12 hours ago did you for serious not level up a single combat skill and let this simmer

pulsar dragon
#

I mean, the idea is very clearly that to be the dude's mentor, you need to be skilled enough for him to listen, and the way the game decides that is based on...your ingame skills

Combat Level is the closest thing there is to a style-agnostic evaluation of your capabilities, and while I'm in favor of retooling the entire combat level system from the ground up because it's janky and nonindicative, that's never gonna happen for nostalgia reasons

so we're stuck here unless you want a hard ranged, mage, and melee req or something instead, which doesn't solve your issue

noble scarab
#

hard requirement of 126 combat to be on par with cyrisus

pulsar dragon
#

unless this is another "why can't my pure
access this content" complaint in which case, buddy, toss it on the pile and then back away before the pking discourse shows up here too

noble scarab
#

its not even a pure, he said earlier that he just didnt want to level

lmfao

#

go semi-afk sulphur naguas for 6 hours, you'll be there quick

ye as i expected, no reason but "im slightly inconvenienced"

Not everything about being a Pure you know, dream mentor has a hard 40def req anyway, maybe someone wants to get the quest cape at the lowest level possible, could be a variety reasons why people/OP want to, always found it odd that all other quests have a recommended combat level but this is the only one that's forced. Not a big deal just changing it to recommended also and keeps everything consistent

gilded bridge
#

ok so there is a lowest level possible cool

#

some orientation of combat stats such that you have a certain minimum for this quest

#

gg!

#

project zanaris is coming if you really want to test it without such a requirement

kindred comet
#

Since other people aren't being very helpful. @warped thicket

Let's say the quest did keep a combat level requirement. What do you personally feel the level should be?

#

That way we can discern what you feel the gap is between what's needed and what the quest requires.

late lion
#

this is a new level of catering

sharp solstice
#

Could be a zanaris thing first. See if the mass enjoy questcape without hard lock levels reqs.

Maybe itll make its way into main game.

#

If 1 pray jad can be done. Im sure many of those quest bosses can also be done if no req to get there.
But full circle. A zanaris thing.

kindred comet
#

Or make it a miniquest.

What a meaningless argument. The entire game exists around requirements some dev at some point in time decided to put in. You cant just arbitrarily remove them just you happen to not like one for no reason. "man i have all the requirements to kill hydra just not the 95 slayer, please remove Jagex"

#

if any small obstacle makes you quit the game i think its just not the right game for you bud

warped thicket
placid harness
#

Ok so you chose to arbitrarily limit your accounts capabilities and now you are complaining about those limits

warped thicket
#

combat level and skill are different lol

placid harness
#

not really no

warped thicket
#

i mean if i want to pk....

placid harness
#

limiting your account in any of the skills and that obviously includes combat will limit the amount of content your account has access to

#

pures cant do all kinds of things

warped thicket
#

no lol im 76 cb rn and i know i can do the quest

#

so that doenst limit me

#

what limits me is the requirment

#

requirement*

#

some people hold good status to having low cb

#

it makes me personally happy

#

so i really do not appreciate you trying to push me in to things i do not want to do

placid harness
#

im not trying to push you into anything, im saying you cant do the quest

warped thicket
#

ik

#

why im here

placid harness
#

same as you cant wear types of armor/weapons,/craft things

#

if you dont level up a skill

#

there is no difference

warped thicket
#

i have all the skill reqa

placid harness
#

so complaining about limits you put on yourself is weird

warped thicket
#

reqs

#

i would have to raise my atk/str/range/def/hp/mage in order to raise my cb lvl lol i do not want to do that

placid harness
#

ok

#

and my 50 herblore pure would like to do SoTE

#

i dont want to skill herblore

#

please fix

#

you see how that doesnt make sense

warped thicket
#

idk what sote is

placid harness
#

song of the elves

#

play a restricted account = you restrict your access to content

#

idk how that is a difficult concept

warped thicket
#

i would gladly get 70 herblore to do that quest

#

that does not raise my combat level lol

placid harness
#

ok i explained it 5 times now if you chose to not understand it i cant help you

#

best of luck with the suggestion

warped thicket
#

i guess we both just dont see the same way thats ok

#

you have your opinion i respect it

#

i hope you have a good day

#

ty for ur insight

placid harness
#

your opinion is that there is tangible difference between skill reqs and combat reqs or that combat lvl is somehow not the same thing as skilling. as you can see by the responses to this thread you are very alone with that opinion though so ye maybe think that one over 🤷‍♂️

#

good day to you too sir

gilded bridge
#

i woud gladly get 70 defence to do sote if it meant i didnt need 70 farming or 70 herblore

#

i think we should poll this

kindred comet
#

If you only get 43 Prayer for Protects, 99 HP, and then 40 Defence and 65 Magic for the previous quest, your combat level will be 71. The combat level requirement for the quest is 85.

If you want to get Spellbook Swap, which I'm assuming is why you're doing this quest in the first place, you need 96 Magic, which would make you level 86 combat.

So the only reason you wouldn't want to get 85 combat would be if you aren't getting Protects or you aren't maxing your HP.

late lion
#

it's a skill requirement regardless, you just have more freedom in which combat skills you want to train

kindred comet
#

I guess a good question would be what your current setup is. You can use the wiki's combat level calculator to see where to best put your skill levels.

clever tangle
#

Oh look, another self restricted pvper asking for quests to be changed to fit their build

earnest herald
#

You don’t meet the requirements to do the quest, regardless of whether you can win the fights

warped thicket
#

im 82 mage rn and even if i got 86 mage id still be under the cb lvl req

#

i have more than enough alchs to get me there too i fully supplied myself and got 22k teak logs too lmao it was a long af grind to not be able to do it

#

all in hopes i can raise my construction

I agree. Though skill requirements absolutely have a place in quests, I do believe that Combat Level is a bit of an odd one to use – mostly because of how impactful or restrictive it can be, given the somewhat peculiar way it's being calculated. If there was truly a reason to set combat related requirements, I'd much rather see a certain Attack, Strength, Defence, etc., levels as a requirement rather than the Combat Level that's calculated based on these (even if they'd both land at effectively requiring level 85, I'd still prefer that approach).

Right now the restriction does feel a bit arbitrary. Should the player be incapable of passing the combat challenges posed in any quest, they'll find out soon enough.

kindred comet
#

The combat requirement gives more build freedom, though.

vast loom
#

That's true and I don't think we should be replacing Dream Mentor's Combat Level requirement with the individual skills either. I just meant that as a general approach, if a quest – for whatever reason – makes sense to have a certain combat related requirement, I'd rather it be a specific skill that's actually utilised in the quest itself, rather than just a generic Combat Level requirement.

For Dream Mentor specifically, I don't mind seeing the requirement removed in its entirety.

kindred comet
#

I suppose. Though this is one of the few quests where I feel combat being a requirement is justified. The entire quest is about getting a guy who already has insanely high combat (and probably is 85 combat himself) to not be afraid of combat.

kindred comet
#

That will give you 85 combat

#

Or forgoing some defence to get Attack.

#

Your main worry is HP

#

Nevermind, you can still keep that HP even with 50 Attack

#

I hope Scape XP's HP calculator is accurate

#

But yeah, high magic with defence and attack will make you obliterate in pvp if that's your goal

#

Since you're iron, you can also justify going ranged for cbolts too

#

Actually, if you could tell us your current skill levels that'd be great.

#

It's just hard to imagine a scenario in which increasing your skills to get 85 won't serve you better than keeping your combat level low. There is just so much you're sacrificing by not bringing 76 up to 85.

dire minnow
#

The guy Cyrisus in the quest is 126cb so there is no reason he would randomly listen to someone 85cb or not, changing it to be recommended combat level like all other quests is fine, your combat level only affects what items you need to bring him in the quest. It all depends if you are Melee dominant, Range dominant, or a Mage dominant build, this just opens things up more as most of the time when you are doing the quest because of the forced cb level you are Melee dominant.

I remember being pissed at the cb level requirement when this quest first came out. I had a quest cape in the mid 60s cb and had to ruin the achievement of doing every boss underleveled to get my cape back. Nowadays you'd need to change too many quests for that to matter as much, but I still think arbitrarily restricting quest completion with cb level is bad design

theres always a way to do certain things in game. look at the dude that got a firecape at lvl 3!

#

he wasnt restricted to do what he truly wanted to do he figured it out, but this restriction is a full hault for people like us

pulsar dragon
#

your restriction is being lazy

this isn't even a pure/zerker or skiller thing, and the quest isn't challenging enough for it to be a severe test of skill

you're just mad that you can't do the thing without meeting the reqs for it

if you just killed naguas for like 6 hours instead of complaining you'd have the reqs

manic jolt
#

i support lifting the combat requirement

hollow jolt
#

What does the 85cb req really prove? The limiting factor is if you can pass the fights, that shows prowess more than the arbitrary 85cb. 70in all combats makes more sense than 85cb. And being the only quest to require CB makes it an oddball
