Smokers are passive cooking IRL, and interesting enough to be a game mechanic.

Gameplay Loop:

  • Travel to smoker
  • Set a smoker's temperature (insert/withdraw fire runes)
  • cut logs into wood chips (fletching)
  • Add wood chips to smoker
  • preheat the smoker
  • Add evil dave spice to a raw meat
  • add spiced raw meat to smoker
  • For safe passive xp, pay a chef to watch and preserve your xp from the meat
  • As with IRL Smoker BBQ, several hours timer.
  • Large amounts of meat may be cooked to perfection with zero burn rate upon collection.

As with in-person smoking, numerous factors will go into optimizing XP.

  • Special request multiplier; assistant chef will allow you to deposit and cook a significantly higher amount of food if doing their random request. This should make that request the uncontested best XP/h option.
  • Certain wood pairing with certain meats will give a +- multiplier.
  • Certain spices pairing with certain meats will give a +- mutliplier.
  • Being present to withdraw the meat at the exact optimal timer, indicated as internal temperature.
  • Being present to withdraw the meat at the exact internal temp will give more xp if the cook was not paid to watch your meat.

The activity will serve as high risk, high xp passive skilling where you have.

The attractions:

  • Players may manually attempt to cook meats higher than their level permits.
  • Precise and active gameplay should result in up to double the xp/hour and allow you to turn a profit
  • The choice to insure your xp for a cost of gold and xp
  • The ability to attempt manual cooks ~20-30 levels higher than your current level.
  • After completing a cook, you have the choice to keep your cooked food or donate it for random xp.
  • Manually cooking cheap meats for a special request can grant higher xp than expensive meats.

The risks:

  • Failing a cook can result in the loss of food entirely. To preserve rarity, only one burnt fish can be collected.

Requirements:

  • Recipe For Disaster

Loc:

  • Witchaven

Complex setup and forced to respond to precise timers, risk of massive losses, with the tradeoff of massive, passive, and sometimes cheap xp.

karambwan
950,000/h interacting every 0.6 seconds

summer pie - bake pie
490,000/h interacting every 50.4 seconds

cooking manta ray:
300,000/h interacting every 67.2 seconds

wines:
490,000/h interacting every 16.8 seconds

smoking at 99:
per wiki, standard cooking is done at 1,365 per hour.
The designated xp rates for this activity is that of tree farming, which is ~150k if you do a run every 24 hours. Fruit trees are 16 hours, so it's a once per day activity. Maxed smoking will be twice a day for slightly more xp, 200k.

Optimal setup calc:
Manta Rays are 216.3 xp each.
Each smoking run will be ~6h delayed.
462.320 manta rays would be left for 6 hours with all the right setups in place to net a 100k xp reward.

A special request at 99 cooking would allow cheap meats such as chicken to be sunk into smoking and "deleted" for the same xp at a much lower cost.

i don't think cooking should have passive xp

meager arch
spiral solstice
#

any exp rates should be butchered down to a third to their counterparts, same way passively throwing logs on a fire shouldn't reward laziness and not best exp per time spent interacting

also if the meat has any positive buffs added onto it, it would become forced labor for everyone to do their daily cooking run, just to get these meats, which is not a fun incentive to be putting into a game like old school runescape

meager arch
#

you'd be doing tunas at level 1.

#

and it is actually way less than 1/3.

#

cooking manta ray:
300,000/h interacting every 67.2 seconds

#

6 hours of mantas would be 1.8m xp

#

/3 = 600k xp

#

the primary attraction is that the xp can come very cheap or you can cook way above your level.

spiral solstice
#

a maple tree that takes 5 hours only gives 3403 farming exp

meager arch
#

but a whole set of trees fruit and magics are 150k a day if you only do it once

spiral solstice
#

and you wanna condense all that effort into a single cooking action

meager arch

You could do cooks assistant or grind shrimp up to 40 cooking

#

or you could find out what your cooking task is

#

and do a grandmaster quest xp drop

#

by doing it perfectly

forest peak
#

are you saying that, for example, if it takes 6 hours

#

and you come back to check on it in 7 hours instead

#

you would take a penalty?

meager arch
#

you've lost some xp.

forest peak
#

how much though

meager arch
#

idk, I'm never gonna be the one fine tuning the idea.

spiral solstice
#

but you're paying the caretaker anyway

meager arch
#

for safer return, you dump gold

#

but don't get best xp

#

So you can go sweatlord iron chef and drop a tuna task right from level 1 and find yourself able to cook it on the range afteer.

#

or you can set it up like a farming run

#

sink gold, sink items, take a slow passive rate

keen glacier
#

im not opposed but i also dont think its necessary

#

also it would use coal/charcoal, not fire runes

spiral solstice
#

i'm all for a cooking mini-game, your idea of balance just isn't there

#

this could tie into hunting prime pieces of meat for the smoker

meager arch
#

I'm just the pitch guy.

spiral solstice
#

rare drops from hunter that can be put into the smoker by skilled cooks to make a skilled dish

meager arch
#

I'd do the homework and balance calcs if I was ever really asked to by jagex but its not my job.

spiral solstice
#

a skilled butcher is just as important

#

maybe even a farming expansion for cattle

#

the vegans are gonna love this

this activity is

  • item sink for xp (optional)
  • gold sink for safety (optional)
  • lower than others xp rate
  • complex setup required
  • significant level skip
  • passive xp
forest peak
#

what is the complex setup

#

i don't understand fully i think

meager arch
forest peak
#

also if you were using - and + for highlighting i would prob use "diff" code blocks btw

#
- item sink for xp (optional)
- gold sink for safety (optional)
- lower than others xp rate
- complex setup required

+ significant level skip
+ passive xp

although i don't personally like the way that looks outside of highlighting code but maybe that's what you were going for

meager arch
#

and in smoking, you set one temperature and wait for another to reach a certain point.

forest peak
#

how would you feel about something like

#

a 4 hour period instead of 6 (since a lot less people hit the nerd log than 3-4 hours)

every <25% of whatever total time period, in this case 1 hour>, you have to check on it - sorta like farming but you would have to check every growth stage

at the start and every check after, you would need to maintain the temp within some range

so lets say it starts requiring a range of 220 to 260 (random numbers i've never smoked meats and ig we can pretend this is for some arbitrary meat) - and then after 1 hour, based on some random specification of well-done-ness, you would need to keep it within 230-255 instead, then after 2h it's 240-250, then 3h for 245 - 247.5, and then provided those checks were done, you get your xp drop at the end

this would effectively be like, lets say 2.5 minutes per check for a total of 4 checks in this example, so something like 45k xp per xp drop (effectively equal to just slightly over 75% of non-tick manip, high eff manta rays at 99 with elite zeah) at 99 cooking, scaling quadratically downwards to like, for example, a 22.5k xp drop at 70 cooking

I like the idea of adding the smoker in general.
I had a Kitchen Hub idea only two people commented on it.

Anyways, the idea of a smoker for passive cooking is kinda cool. I hate making beer because there are only two in the entire game (wishing there was more) because of the passive exp. I love farming, so passive is fine for me.

  1. Should add a small cap on how much meat can be added. It's just a thing to do.
  2. The game loop is too much work. Keep it simple. Just adding wood is the best thing for the smoker. Depending on the logs would do something either to time/exp/bonuses/ what smoker you could use. Idk, that is up to the devs.
  3. Still has the burn/cook ratio as normal.
  4. Food, once done, has to be in the smoker without penelty. Time management within the game as well as IRL is a huge thing to consider. Which is why #3 is stated.
  5. Smokers locations can be of location for social interactions. Something important for MMOrpgs and ironmen (;p)

Over all, just the basic idea is something I am interested in seeing in the game. Of course there are some fine tuning and how it can be used with other skills such as fishing, hunter, and just killing npcs.

forest peak
#

rate is based on 99 cooking mantas 3.5t cooking (which isn't tick manip) being 359212.5 xp/hr effectively

#

the "temp range being smaller, but not towards the exact middle of the initial range" is to require the player to put in slightly more effort than just "click farming patch once every time frame"

# neon narwhal I like the idea of adding the smoker in general. I had a Kitchen Hub idea only ...

#1 - I'm thinking of an item sink. If smoker cooking allows you to dump some items for xp, it can help revalue food.
#2 - The repeated loop will simply be adding more wood and starting it once it's setup. That loop I have shown is really an initial setup.
#3 - beats the idea of a smoker. It's nearly impossible to burn in one, hence the +30 cooking advantage I suggested. There could be a catastrophic malfunction randomly to level that out.
#4 - I can see that, but I imagined hitting the timer/temp exactly as the key to best xp rates.
#5 - Yea I picked whichhaven because it's next to the ocean, reasonably close to a bank, and ardy tele I think is unlocked in the process of doing RFD. It's a half-baked idea.

I like it.
Kind of like brewing ale, but for food...
Maybe to item sink you could pass off a thousand or so notes of the meat to some kind of meat inspector so they can pick the very best one for the smoker?

ivory tangle

Why not just buff brewing? It's literally right there and the kind of passive Cooking XP method.

#

I honestly think having a couple of extra breweries would be nice too

neon narwhal

why not both? @ivory tangle . I love brewing, just sucks that there are only two locations for 'em. I thought Valamore/Kourend would have one but nope.. idk how they make their beer.

I wouldn't mind this if it yields better food than Anglerfish.

Brisket > Fish.

# royal cedar I wouldn't mind this if it yields better food than Anglerfish. Brisket > Fish.

Not the design I was suggesting.
This would allow more passive cooking with a significant level skip.

  • Can additionally serve as a gold/item sink for more xp
  • Can be carefully managed for optimal xp
  • Can also be very cheap xp if doing cooking task specified.

Say you got a 3k "Shrimp" task.
shrimp are super cheap and not worth cooking at later levels for xp, but low and behold the cooking task allows you to dump ~10k at a time but you need to give them up.

3,000 shrimp x 111 on GE = 330k gold
3,000 shrimp x 45 xp (50% xp bonus for giving them up to task)
= 135k xp over 6 hours waiting, items deleted.

#

just noticed raw shrimp are more expensive than raw lobsters.

#

that's sad
