#Bring back 2007scape!

the market for is very niche
osrs released and it was losing pouplairty very quickly
only got better with updates
and you cant really say that commuity didint ask for it.
legit everything goes through polling those updates passed because commuity wanted them
rsc basically was this and ppl were cheating there nonstop
Thank you for your comments! So far all of them have been business considerations, i suggest you let Jagex handle that part 🙂 I appreciate you looking out for their coffers though!
There was a thing in a survey going around about hosted instances of the game, kind of like how people run Minecraft servers, and even those can be running extremely old versions of the game
If that does end up being a thing we can do, think it's safe to say at least one person will attempt a straight 2007 clone, maybe even older, can't say it'll feel the same without hundreds of people on it, but it could happen legitimately
Aye, that would just split up the population too much imo, like now where we have a million world servers and the world feels empty compared to just 7 years ago.
WoW does it successfully with their classic servers, so I dont understand why the first two comments insist its niche. Personally, at least 50% of my clan and friends would play it, probably both game versions at the same time, most runescape players have loads of alts. So it couldnt possibly steal players from OSRS.
Whether its financially viable for Jagex is something they do heavy research in before deciding.
weve already been through this with osrs release nostalgia does not sell long term
if i recall wow classic is also getting updates
so its more like current version of osrs
not just buisness ask commuity why they keep passing updates
why vote yes when you could just vote no
would be simple fix if commuity banded together to vote no
you literally stated in your suggestion that "jagex gets a huge boost in revenue for little effort"
and then you reply with some passive aggressive bs when we say thats not true?
The community very literally did ask for the game that we have now
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Polls
Polls are in-game votes in which players are asked to express their preferences for certain changes within Old School RuneScape. Only members with a total level of 300 or above and with a minimum total play-time of 25 hours can participate.
When a poll is live, players who log in and have not cast their votes will receive a message in the chatbo...
It's odd that there is this idea of polls being completely community driven. The poll suggestions and direction are decided by jagex, not the players, meaning they lead. We just get the choice.
I also don't see any reasonable comment about why jagex SHOULD NOT do this. I did not ask you to fight and discuss my word choices, that's just weird, this is about adding more content for a game we all love, for more to enjoy. And this is done without hurting you. Stop being so grumpy tf.
I'm glad you were able to do a full market analysis and a calculation of manpower to profit ratio, whilst also taking into account jagex' resources and long term strategies. And only in an hour too! They should hire you, thank you for sharing this absolute truth.
Wait but your original post was about 'Jagex probably getting a huge boost in revenue with little effort' and you said that 'its nearly no work'
But when others said that this might not be the case you suddenly seem to have the standpoint that people outside of Jagex can have absolutely no understanding of this 🤔
Maintaining a server is cheap, it requires no where near the resources that creating new content requires. They obviously have the experience and manpower to do it efficiently, as opposed to single man private servers that can do the same thing. Whether they get a boost in revenue is unknown, but it is very likely that it is a profitable scenario.
Thank you for adding to the discussion Sander, you provided some very valuable input to this debate. I hope this comment satisfies you, so we can get back to the original point of the post instead of discussing Jagex' financials. But again, thank you for looking out for the other commenters and jagex' pockets!
Being snide and leaning on anecdotes isn't making your point any clearer.
My point is written in the post, it cannot get any clearer. I suggest we make a seperate 07 server or world. People are welcome to have opinions, though I would much prefer they have something to do with the game instead of the financial aspects.
I was not even discussing Jagex' financials by the way, that was you 🙂 but keep being sarcastic to every response, I'm sure that will make your argument a lot stronger 👍
I'm sorry, this was not about jagex' financials? I must have missed your point then. Was it about the game?
I am not trying to make an argument for it, it is merely a suggestion or wish.
It was about your suggestion, which is what these threads are for, but you are welcome to read my initial message again as it was just pointing out some inconsistency with your the reasoning in your original post and the respones that you've been given to others, nothing more than that.
You say it was about my suggestion because you pointed out inconsistencies in my responses. I hate to break it to you, but that has nothing to do with my suggestion, I'm sorry you feel the need to point out these things as they are completely irrelevant to the discussion. Please do share if you can bring something of value to the conversation.
I am very happy the arguments against it so far has only been "too niche" and "you are wrong it can't be profitable!", I can understand the first point although I disagree. The second one is none of our business unless you work for jagex, or have any remote clue how maintaining a server works which seems to be lacking in these comments.
Couldn't you just restrict yourself to content and items that you want to use?
You're not forced to do new content or use new items/methods.
Only thing you will have an issue with is pvp
And even then if there are enough people who want this, start a community and enforce the rules
That would just not work. It either has to be enforced by jagex or some 3rd party private server, I prefer jagex do it.
Let me elaborate, there are many more things to runescape than forcing yourself into self enforced locked ironman mode, 07 was way more social than current OSRS in all ways. This is already an incredibly isolating game experience, which is why jagex tries to improve it by adding social events like minigames for every skill. Forestry does it well, but wintertodt, blast furnace and GOTR for example wont have anyone even talking for hoursssss, even though there are 400+ people in the same 20 tiles.
07scape is about spamming south of varrock bank to sell your stuff, fishing together, getting owned by mages south of varrock and other stuff. Its about having fun.
Honestly when I look at some of the polls from the first year of old school, I have absolutely 0 idea why anyone would want to play actual 07
Being unable to control camera with your mouse, can't disable rooves, no rooftops or sepulchre
If it was as simple as just flipping a switch and turning on these servers and ignoring them, I wouldn't mind it. But I know it wouldn't be that simple, and it would take time and resources away from OSRS to a place that I don't think is worth it
Nobody said anything about taking resources away from OSRS. That is not how expanding works. And obviously not something jagex would ever do, considering its their cash cow.
I did. I don't think there's a world where this could exist without taking away from their current resources.
So I don't support it
You are welcome not to support it, although as i have iterated many times the financial aspect is completely idiotic for us to discuss, but lets cover it shortly. OSRS has limited potential to make jagex more money, only way they can do it is either grow the playerbase or add microtransactions. Growing the playerbase is ofcourse incredibly difficult and very slow if possible. Investing in expansion (something companies do) is a very viable way to avoid microtransactions in osrs and adding revenue.
I agree that the game is an incredibly isolating experience, and that those points are very nostalgic & attributed to 2007scape. But I don't think a true 2007scape would provide that.
It was initially tried at OSRS's conception, but it failed to garner a large enough amount of players. I think you would end up with only a few 2007scape worlds - and even then, you would not have some of the arguably good updates, such as Agility rooftops, black square areas filled in, POH updates, etc. Such that I think most players would not want to play it. And if you ask for that to be added - well then that's asking for new content, which deviates from the premise.
I think improving social interactivity would be good for OSRS, and I'd support it. I don't think true 2007scape is desirable, but maybe I'm wrong.
A question in a survey might be a interesting idea. Though I hear the "custom server abilities" that was asked in one of the previous polls did not fare well, so I'd expect a true 2007scape question to similarly not be popular.
Are you proposing that literally 0% of the current staff go to working on this new project?
cuz that seems no different to me than just letting it be handled by a private individual
This scenario would only be considered if they choose not to INVEST INTO EXPANDING. They could choose to relocate some employees and hire new ones to fill the gap, they could rehire some of the ones that left in protest of the games poor direction, but considering how little is required to only maintain a server discussing this makes no sense. This is a billion dollar company, they can afford maintenance. I wont be entertaining this subject anymore, but you are totally right it is something jagex need to consider.
This ain’t happening chief
kay ty 🙂
That shit would die so quickly
moving current staff away from OSRS is literally exactly what I do not want to happen
I was giving examples bruh. Literally a billion dollar company.
Yeah, it does seem like the only viable protest against this is the popularity of the servers. I would think its totally fine for it only to have a few worlds, I dont think we need to have only 300-500 players on each world like current osrs. Obviously the only question for jagex is if it will be profitable, that requires it being popular enough. The landscape is very different than it was in 07, OSRS is an established game with actual marketing and some pull, as opposed to a new launched game with no budget.
jagex isn't a billion dollar company but sure
p sure their net worth as of like a few years ago was under 100mil
anyway as someone who actually played back in 2007 i can safely say i personally would not play a 2007 variant of the game
i enjoyed rs2 very much near the 2009-2011 mark, that would probably be the most enjoyable non-osrs variant of runescape for me
What rock have you been sleeping under?
So did i. Thats why I suggested either 07 or 10 😄
pro tip - life time profits are not equal to net worth or company valuation
if you owned jagex rn you would not be able to sell it for 1 billion dollars
Okay, let me ask you this. Would jagex getting sold for 1 billion dollars count as being a 1 billion dollar company?
And if yes, just do a lil quick google search
And just for funsies, look at past sales aswell
