What:

Hunt aggressive creatures in rune altars

How:

Enter a runic altar
Opt-in to the activity by luring creatures
Creatures attack with telegraphed hits on squares which will stun & push back the player
Reach the creature to siphon off stackable essence
Craft your essence at the altar for runes!

Why:
Make a skilling experience as engaging and rewarding as PvM
Stage an activity in the altars, which are really pretty set pieces you barely spend any time in

Also, in context of current scar altar discussion:

I actually think the scar is a pretty clever way to add rune packs that require runecrafting (and add tons of pure essence to the game)
But gotta respect the pure of heart "kill shop scape" designers (Sae Bae, Gentle Tractor, ScreteMonge) and here's an alternative maybe they would approve of

Definitely an inspiration and thematically similar. But:
a) runespan broke RS3 RC by providing way better XP rates
b) it is all centrally located & a bit minigame-y
