Put in a leagues style task list for individual non combat skills that would let people who enjoy a specific type of skill have a reason to grind out different parts of it.

the reward could be a transmog to that skills cape/hood that shows they have essentially mastered/completed the skill by experiencing everything it has to offer in full.
maybe skilling specific xp lamps for each tier of task completed.
a max cape variant for all skills mastered could offer another goal for players who aren't pvm/collection log players.

task example below for fishing:

  • earn 8,000 reward points from tempoross
  • catch 2,000 sharks in Priff
  • Catch 10,000 anglerfish
  • catch 10,000 karabambams (however its spelt...)
    -catch 10,000 infernal/sacred eels
  • Obtain the fishing pet
  • obtain a pearl barbarian rod
-one task for each of the giant fish collection log things

all those tasks sound boring af. Perhaps the dev time can be allocated to making something more fun?

weary ice
#

yeah i'm just going through fish/locations that exist in game. the main idea is it would give you a reason to do all content around the game for that skill

#

devs/skillers could 100% come out with a better list than what i put out

cedar crest
#

do you have an estimate it would take to complete those tasks?

#

looks to be more time than to obtain a zuk helm

I think something like this might be a nice feature for the current and future guilds in the game. there's this unanswered gamedev question, "what should a "guild" provide?". I could see this become that missing common theme

weary ice
#

i would imagine it being a grind similar to the champions cape in terms of difficulty , length wise i have no clue

weary ice
cedar crest
#

length wise its like ~400 ehp which is boring af for fishing shark and shit

slow narwhal
#

and if you think about it, combat achievements rewards are already received in front of warrior's guild as well

weary ice
#

so its something you can do on your way to 99 , rather than camping max xp

cedar crest
#

well time to max fishing you did about 400% rather than 25%

#

so 1/16th of your list

weary ice
#

lol like i said the task list there was just an example of the activites , the amount you have to do would be up to balancing

cedar crest
#

is catching shark an activity youd like cosmetics to be locked behind?

weary ice
#

i mean the giant shark is locked behind it already

#

but if i liked afk skilling & earning rewards , yes i would want that

cedar crest
weary ice
#

some people in my cc seem to love it and slap it on the bingo 😂

#

i did 3/4 of the big fish tasks. it aint some massive grind that you need to focus on

#

but again , task list would be something more skill based players would agree on

#

for all i know it could be replaced with catch minnows

#

for example hunter has so many methods and locations , but people normally just camp profit ones

#

it would give a reason to do/explore it all

cedar crest
#

Well, my feedback is this suggestion seems really boring and i dont think its would add much value compared to something else that could be worked on instead

weary ice
#

fair enough , what task would you want to do

#

if you're a skill focused player that is

cedar crest
#

I wouldnt

weary ice
#

lol okay then , so its not a suggestion for players like you then...

#

obviously if you don't like skilling then you wouldn't care for this suggestion

#

spelling hard feelsroqman

cedar crest
#

Achievment diaries are majority skilling and I dont mind them. But they're a one-and-done, not a grind

#

I wouldnt mind skill based skilling (although idk how that would be tracked or implemented) that requires you to learn firebwan or something

#

but again, effort to create that is, imo, better spent anywhere else

weary ice
#

i see what you're saying but that means your issue is with the skilling methods that exist in the game already.

cedar crest
#

no, my issue is your suggestion requires me to spend fuck loads of hours do the most boring methods

weary ice
#

read the first line of the suggestion... it would simply be for people who enjoy said skill or skilling in general

#

nothing would be locked behind it that you need...

cedar crest
#

any reward from this suggestion I would go for it

#

but I, and anyone else going for it, would not enjoy it

weary ice
#

so if you wanted to show you've done everything fishing has to offer in a flexed skilling cape you will now have a route too.
its essentially a champions cape for skilling. if people are willing to cannonball 5k goblins for a flex cape or do every minigame for a green col log line, i can easily imagine they would be willing to explore the game for a new skill cape

#

the issue with achievement diaries is that its just grinding a skill to 90s and doing something once. you don't have to spend time truly exploring a skill

cedar crest
#

I dont believe many people want to show they have done everything fishing (or any other skill) has to offer. Very little people care. Therefore, to lock an unlockable item behind tedious, boring, and long grinds, I think this suggestion is not good. If it was a boring, but short grind, I wouldn't care. but for ~15 non combat skills, anything of this stature would be hundreds or thousands of hours... very bad design, very boring design, waste of dev time when the same could be allocated elsewhere that would have way more player interaction and value

cedar crest
weary ice
#

its not a waste of dev time if the activities are already in the game and the system has been used 3 times for leagues... the only work they would need is to decide what tasks skills have and what art design is needed

weary ice
#

but again , if you don't like grinding skills then you would lose nothing from ignoring it.

cedar crest
weary ice
#

we are talking about a game where player actively do shit like:

  1. pet hunt that requires doing the same thing for hundreds of hours for a cosmetic
  2. get 200m xp which gets thier name on the leaderboard , takes thousands of hours
  3. make skillers , with the entire aim of just grinding skills for a skill cape (like im suggesting)
  4. get all green coll log slots , knowing there is no reward at the end and it is impossible to fully complete
  5. grind a champions cape , boring pvm version of point 1

so fair enough if you personally might not want to do it , but there is 100% an audience that would

#

the idea of a skilling grind that is equal to around 25% of a skills 99 being too much is wild when you consider whats already being done for 0 reward

#

i do appreciate your feedback though , just feel your issue is more with what the skills have to offer you personally more than anything around a skill task list system

cedar crest
#

To your point, there are fewer people who grind a boss for the pet than there are people who kill that boss for fun.

This is an OK design to me because the majority of the people interacting with that piece of content is for enjoyment.

In your suggestion, there are SO FEW people who would go for this cosmetic out of enjoyment and fun compared to the people going for it as completionists. This is bad design (the majority of players doing it not for enjoyment), and this is what makes it a bad suggestions in my opinion

weary ice
# cedar crest This is a lot of work

also just on this. it isn't.
kirby has literally applied this menu to acheivement diaries in 4 days & the system that tracks what you do has been used/tested in leagues already. all of the system design work has already been done. this is simply utilising it in a different way

cedar crest
weary ice
#

feel free to ask him. i'm just taking him for his word that he spent game jam on it and its working...

cedar crest
#

Game jam for fun projects should not be used as an indicator of the amount of work needed to create content for the live game

#

Game jam for fun projects are not gated behind the necessary team processes since they will not enter the game in their current state

weary ice
# cedar crest Was it QA'd? How much time was spent meeting with 10+ developers to discuss the ...

but to answer this from a project management standpoint

  1. no not QA'd - but QA have 3 leagues worth of experience in testing this system so it isn't going to be extensive
  2. no meeting time has been spent , the meeting time to be spent isn't going to be significantly different than any other content poll process
  3. no they haven't scoped it , can be put in a future slot where there isn't an allocation. will be polled before worked on so 0 wasted time is used
#

but fair enough , appreciate the time taken to say your point from a completionism pov

cedar crest
#

Hopefully our conversation influences people's feedback and votes if this is to be polled

weary ice
#

😂

#

probably will just get thrown on the backlog of ideas that will never see the light of day

#

but still something i would consider worth testing the waters on , especially as there is more detail here than in the current poll

mild nebula
#

tldr so far?

weary ice
#

my tldr is title/post.

Sali : nobody would want to grind skills for the skill cape cosmetic/transmog associated. completionist's wouldn't like it

cedar crest
#

reason: long and boring af

weary ice
#

hence why i asked what would a good task list look like , your response is you wouldn't want to do it anyway...

mild nebula
#

yeah I gotta agree with salii

weary ice
#

as a completionist i would expect you to have more insight as to what grinds are fun , and why.

mild nebula
#

unless you make something that actually requires doing something else than afking for 400h

weary ice
#

my list is on the idea of : try out all the content

mild nebula
#

or that already has a reward

#

idk whats the point

mild nebula
weary ice
#

"the reward could be a transmog to that skills cape/hood that shows they have essentially mastered/completed the skill by experiencing everything it has to offer in full."

thats the reward im speaking of

mild nebula
#

"mastered skill"

#

yet you didnt do anything special rly

weary ice
#

please read lol , the task list is a barebones example

mild nebula
#

just because you walked around every fishing spot in gilenor doesnt rly mean you did anything

weary ice
#

like if you have suggestions on what a good skills list would look like im all ears

mild nebula
#

most likely bug abuse

weary ice
#

but if the response is "skilling is boring, i want to grind no aspect" then fair enough, its not something for you

mild nebula
#

tick manipulation

#

do 3t4g for full inv

weary ice
#

same way GM combats right now are done by people who wanted to do it , even though rewards were ..meh

mild nebula
#

except combat has so many things going for it

#

skilling is stale content in the end

#

you get rewards in xp or item form

#

but there is difference in cheesing everything in combat and actually going and learning

weary ice
#

the only 'skill' you can reliably check for skilling would be the minigames that have point totals

mild nebula
#

and if you seriously want to see this become a thing you need to have some real suggestions

weary ice
weary ice
#

if the game hasn't got enough depth to skills for it to be a thing then so be it

#

but im just taking concepts that exist , and suggesting putting a reward there

#

if people will grind catch 1k chins for points in a temporary game mode , for prizes that are 100% cosmetic.

i believe they would do the same for a permanent mode

#

not gonna be for everyone , but definitely for enough

mild nebula
#

leagues worked 100% different. There you went for ranks and dopamine rush
