One of my favourite stories was during Christmas. We always made a dog-friendly christmas dinner for our boys. The other dog ate his fill and then came into the living room to lay by the fire. The one in the photo ate his, AND the rest of the other dogs food... waddled into the living room, to the fire, then collapsed on his side rather than lying nicely.

What was funny as well, as that he never forgot his potty training. So, I trained the boys to go to the toilet in a specific area of the garden; contain the mess. And to reinforce that, when they were pups, I gave them treats EVERY TIME they went to the loo in that area of the garden.

10 years later, he would come into the house, bark to get your attention, take you to the potty area, and then to the treat cupboard.

If he felt he was owed a treat, he let you know.

Chase the neighbour's cat out of the garden? That's a treat.
Barked at the delivery driver for getting too close to the house? That's a treat.
A treat for not having a treat for a while? You bet he is demanding a treat.

A few weeks ago, he was hit by a car and had an external fixator. Now, after two surgeries, it’s been removed and only two screws remain. To ensure it heals straight, he’s wearing a rigid cast. Einstein is doing well again, though, and he no longer needs pain medication. But it was terrible for both of us to see that happen. He was also given strong opioid-based medication, much stronger than what humans would typically receive.

Yes, exactly—the cast came off yesterday. According to the X-ray, the bones have healed well, but he still doesn’t want to put weight on it and is walking on three legs. But I think it’ll take a little more time. I once had a tibia fracture in my right leg myself, and for the first few weeks, your muscles aren’t in shape anymore, so you have to learn to walk again, so to speak. In his case, it was a dislocated joint—the bone was completely severed and all the ligaments were torn.

But he’s mostly pain-free, and as of yesterday he’s been allowed out of his crate and can move around freely in the apartment. Just four more weeks, and then he’ll be able to go outside again. But the apartment is already a huge upgrade for him.
