Well a lot of the shows I've watched have "sad" moments, but I'm usually unaffected by those... I've only truly shed a tear for about three animes: Steins;Gate (I'm a sucker for time travel), One Piece (they used music to trick me, still love that episode though), and Haibane Renmei (it's just super well done). When Marnie Was There nearly got me, I was like 90% way there to shed a tear, but ultimately it didn't quite get me.

As a proxy, I'll say that my mom would probably be pouring her eyes out from it, so I guess I should recommend it to her (the issue with this is that I'm not sure how used to subtitled movies she is)

You see the dread of experiencing the loops with the cast is exactly what other time loop shows and movies have missed entirely. only "romance" that comes to mind is monogatari, but that sure as hell aint no entry anime

but yeah honestly thats a pretty good method, or just looking up a short synopsis/checking cover art for recommendations you get

and pick out the ones that seem appealing

there are some shows that are much more than they present themself to be, but pretty much all of em i wouldnt recommend for starters

as they tend to be... intense, or complex to say the least

well are you starting off with the OG DB? it's pretty different to the rest of the series as it focuses more on martial arts, comedy, and adventure. the rest of the series is more into strict fights

its kind of futuristic. they kinda don't really explain that and so it's mostly used whenever its needed rather than what the series is about

yeah that's a good way to do it. i really recommend the manga though. easier to keep up with and faster to get through. plus some funny gags not in the show. but if you're still dead set on the anime then yeah go through DB first.

a lot of people dislike the MC, and the show has an extremely EXTREMELY large cast of characters, which may not sound bad at first but for people like me who really value a small cast to get a lot of development it feels hard to get attached

hmm that's hard to say. i don't personally but other people seem to not like the fans. the advertisement when it first came out tried really hard to push it over anime people liked. saying the mc would be the next Goku and stuff like that, i remember that being weird. the show itself is pretty inconsistent with quality. and i can see people not liking a lot of the characters.

some people like the MC for all the reasons others hate him, and feel the large cast and all the other things others dislike about it are things they like
