Breaking down your reference image into simple shapes can help identify how any of your references look, and how they warp under perspective. I heard that drawing it upside down also helps because it forces the brain to not see the object for the object it is, but as shapes and lines instead. I have not tried it myself though.

Maip macrothorax (like my oc, Malice) was a large carnivore from Cretaceous South America and probably had the craziest hunting tactic I've ever heard of. They would skewer small prey with their two foot long claws and use their claws like a fork. (Spoiled for reasons that are likely crystal clear from that)
