Simple designs are great! Cartoons are fun and widely enjoyed because they have simple, easily recognized overall shape.
My only suggestion, even in a Simple Cartoon, you can find places to exaggerate features to make the Character's unique quality or ability stand out.
Have fun with it! Keep drawing and you will only get better.

In extension; complex creations are only many, smaller, simple shapes put together. Everything can be broken down into your basic triangle, square, circle, rectangle, so forth. So practicing with your basic shapes and shade is best place to start.
