Use a hard pencil like HB and lightly press in a gradient around the edges on the opposite side of a light source. Drawing and shading a sphere is good practice.

You can make it look smoother by using a blending stump or your finger also.

Sketchbooks look so fun to me. I’m just really bad at traditional compared to digital

I highly reccomend it—loosely sketching means you can practice more frequently, and whilst being able to undo/copy paste/etc is really handy it can become a crutch when working digitally! (I always resize the head bc I draw them too big, which lead to me being lazier about getting it initially right when I draw digitally)
And you’ll naturally get better at it over time, that’s what sketchbooks are for so I’d really say go for it!

Not criticism, a good advice i got from my art instructor that i still use to this day is first try making it in all grey, then colour it out based on the different types of shades of grey, then you can tell how much your colour shades change
