Try painting your clay white (Or whatever color the clay is or an off white. May take some searching to find the right shade.) like get a small paintbrush and fill the cracks. Then once the paint dries. paint a layer or two of your picked paint color over the object(the clay)
before you make any shapes try rolling it in your hands for a min or two, like into a ball.
