#AIM-260

I propose a new missile exclusive to the 24 and 45 (and any other future 5th gen that will be in the game) that overall is meant to be a slightly superior without outclassing the other missiles.

Here are the differences from the 120D:
-different engine
-more advanced seeker
-slightly less drag (both front drag and side drag/lift)

Explanaition for each of them:

Different engine:
The current aim120D has a main thruster and a sustainer. The aim 260 instead would have two thrusters, one that activates at the start and one that activates a certain amount of time before impact (or when the target is getting away faster than the missile is getting to the target). They would overall have the same amount of thrust stored (same amount as the 120D), however this setup would change how the speed over time graph looks like for the flight of the missile and would ensure the missile is at high speed during pitbull.

More advanced seeker:
The seeker would have the same CM resistance, same power, all of that the same, but it would drop lock for a second, then relock the enemy when pitbulled and far enough away. This would confuse the enemy on what the missile is doing, while still allowing the missile to guide in onto the target (while this seems like a downside, since the missile cant track and whatnot, if the logic is done right, this would not affect the tracking of the missile but would only confuse the enemy)

Slightly less drag:
This would be to slightly compensate for the lack of a sustainer, and since the aim260 has less fins, it would also have less drag from the side (or less lift from the wings)

i know about this thread #1405476630012498000 message that also suggests the aim 260, however the only similarity between my imagining of it, and the version suggested in that thread is the name. my version of the missile also didnt really fit with the rest of the suggestion (or was unrelated), therefore i made it as a seperate thread

While I think that the 5th gens (or at least the F45) could use more AA weapon variety, I don't really think this is the way to do it. I like the engine part, but don't really get the different seeker. What I think would be cool is if most fighters (FA26, F45, T55) got some sort of modern long range counterpart of the AIM-54 (possibly similar to the AIM174B).

this just seems gamey for the sake of being gamey

If you have any suggestions on how to make the seeker different, please do share. I feel that having it be the same as the 120 would be boring and a bit weird (same way that its weird that 9+ and 9 have the same seeker), but a straight upgrade with stats would just be boring. I thought that having the seeker seem less threatening is the way to go. Maybe it could first softlock, then hardlock or sth? (So you dont get the hardlock sound so early or sth)

# regal smelt I think the seeker locking, then unlocking and locking again is just weird. It's...

It wasnt my first idea, but the others had problems:
-if it would be made harder to detect in any way (as in an LPI radar), then that ripples through the whole game since probably the 45 and 58 at the very least should have those, and how would one even make a radar "harder to detect" without making it too op, etc.
-if the distance at which it activates its radar was bigger, it would just warn the enemies earlier, so a no go
-if the distance at which it activates its radar was smaller, it would just soft buff g-pulling as there is less time for chaffing, but g-pulling is unaffected
-if the seeker could fall back in some way onto DL guidance, then tgp/eots tracking becomes more op than it is now.
-leaving it the same way that the 120 is would make it harder to see that a different missile was fired, and would just not be as interesting, although i get leaving it as is if people dont like the methods in which the seeker is different

The only way it could be different in a signifficant way would be changing the TX/RX power ratio, so the missile appears much closer or much further on the rwr than the 120, which would throw off g-pulling and possibly chaffing (although not sure about that one)

changing the power ratios sounds the most interesting tbh

Ye, it was the second best idea after the unlocking (in my ranking). Only issue is if the change isnt signifficant enough, we end up with an aim54 situation, where the timing is just slightly different (although the 54 also apparently pulls less). Only way i could see it happening is if the ratios were much different, but idk in which direction it should lean, as rx being higher means the missile moves faster on the rwr (from my understanding), while tx being higher means it will start moving to the center of the rwr earlier
