chaff is just metal strips so the engine could probably chew through without any major issues

flares I'm not that sure on but I don't think those are that big either

I feel like flying through debris from an explosion would make more likely to cause engine issues, but considering how rare of an occurrence this is i dont think the performance cost of checking for debris is worth it

At least in training you’re allowed to use flares even in BFM, which to me implies the risk is negligible
