#Turboprop low altitude ground attacker/dogfighter

a Super Tucano inspired one would look great in VTOL. Also more low-tech capability, and possible mechanical like engines and stuff game mechanics
Such as blade pitch
Considering the Super Tucano can use laser guided weapons and such, it would be a great low-tech option because you can either have more high tech stuff, or low tech dumb bombs and what now.
Also maybe a better combat to helicopters?
The points about BFM and outmaneuvering SAM's is just not true
yeah, that's my bad. I was trying to emphasize how something like that would have better low altitude performance and maneuverability
So here’s kind of the issue about turbo props in bfm
Sure, they turn hard
But they cannot compete at all with jets in the vertical
Purely because of the difference in thrust
It will not be able to compete with viffing
:/
You wouldn’t be able to outmaneuver missiles either
Simply because your climbrate is much much lower
with a powerful enough engine, high air density, and high propeller RPM, turboprops can and will outperform jets. It is (theoretically) possible to reach higher than mach speeds aswell
They tried that
It didn’t fucking work
Meet the thunderscreech
The reason supersonic turboprops are not in fact a thing
At supersonic speeds the aircraft was shaking itself apart from the vibrations of its propeller
the tips of the propeller were constantly exiting and entering mach speeds
Creating a deafening thundering noise
That was so relentless people literally got migraines from it
One guy literally passed out from it
This is not a good idea for a fucking reason
*it still was no match for the F15 in climbrate.
what about transonic then? at high enough altitudes you can get where you're going and then dive down
I-
You do not understand
They fly below mach 0.99 for a reason
It is to not destroy the aircraft
The propellers do not get near supersonic speeds for that reason
yes, transonic, mach 0.94-0.99
The outside of the propeller has to move faster than the inside
Meaning the tips would be doing the same as the ones on the thunderscreech
Which is no bueno
propeller tip can move at subsonic speeds and just have a higher blade pitch to make up for it
This will not beat any modern day jet fighter in the vertical
at some point higher blade pitch is detrimental.
also increases fuel drain because you’re increasing workload
Which is as you can guess
Not good for the engine
this is why we have big ass props
I don’t think you understand that this wouldn’t be better than any viffing aircraft in bfm
At all
It won’t outmaneuver SAMs
It won’t outturn the 45 or 42
And I guarantee you it will not beat the 26 or 24 in the vertical
yeah...
From the XF84H Wikipedia page
who says engineers in the near-future VTOL wouldn't be able to create more reliable, practical engines using smaller propellers that rotate faster while staying at a consistant RPM?
rotate faster
That was the fucking issue
yes, yes, the people in the (70 year old btw) thunderscreech program couldn't make a propeller reliably rotate past mach 1 tip speeds
The fact the propeller was spinning so quickly put the tips into supersonic speeds
Meaning it was vibrating even more
Shaking itself apart
You should like
that's where a smaller prop wins, it has less variability and hell, you could probably spin the roots at mach
Read into it
Why the program wasn’t a success
Putting prop aircraft through the sound barrier is still a bad idea
Due to aerodynamics and a lot of other things
:/
the aircraft itself doesn't need to go supersonic, we could get near transonic speeds out of a subsonic propeller
Or hear me out
We could do what every other fucking prop aircraft does
And not go near those speeds
Because propeller aircraft are notoriously inefficient at those speeds because of drag and aerodynamics
its almost as if there is a reason they dont go that fast
This is the reason the XF84H didn’t go into supersonic or transonic speeds
it stayed under those
Because the propeller was constantly going in and out of those speeds
Shaking itself apart
Its like
Almost as if the people back then could understand aerodynamics
