Currently AIM-120 and ASMRM-7 smartly attempts to switch between HOJ and radar guidance in flight if either fails.

Could we have the option to manually set the pitbull range search mode to be either (Auto (Default), HOJ or Radar). This will open up the possibility for Aim120D, Aim120C and ASMRM-7 to be guided by the parent's (radar or trackfile), then when its within pitbull range to start searching in HOJ mode to enable the missile to pick up any omnidirectional noise that the target is leaking before severing the host guidance.

In the equipment panel this change could easily be added bellow the option to allow missile's to be fired in MadDog. It could be labelled "Search mode:" then the option to toggle between [Auto, Radar, HOJ]

Is this an option IRL? never heard of it

Maddog for autohoj

It'd be a cool addition to the toolset that these missiles offer.

I mean, I keep saying FLOOD mode for launching Sparrows without STT would be cool too, but

I mean, yeah why not

Maddog option for all HOJ capable missile would be great

It already is if you're jamming

Yep, not having to gpull an aim7 in the merge is really great, but the biggest advantage is how their brain completely blue screen

I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but number pad clicky, missile beep, sounds cool, I’m in.

Would this just be a way to maddog a HOJ?

Essentially, yeah

Call it a hotdog

Will do! o7

Thank god we cant optionally fully disable pitbull on the 120D, otherwise optical guidance would get a giant boost in power

Wait, isnt this meant to be a maddog like firing? As someone said "hotdog"

clear garnet
#

So if a 45 or 24 has a optical lock on you, and has configured the search mode to be HOJ then it wont sever the host guidance.

clear garnet
#

No this is to allow you to configure what search mode the missile uses when its within pitbull range.

celest forge
#

OOOOOH, i get it now

clear garnet
#

Currently, it smartly switches between HOJ or Radar if either of them fail.

celest forge
#

I mean you can still defeat that kind of missile, jam it then stop. Jamming will make it go pitbull, stopping will stop it from hitting you, so its not as bad

clear garnet
#

In the 26/55 you can force the missile into HOJ by severing the host radar guidance 20 seconds before impact by turning off the radar or clearing the radar.

I think the level of tunability is a little too op somthing like the f18s aircraft size parameters being added to the sms and storage pages would make sense but inputting a custom range is a little busted

Ye, by bad, wasnt thinking about other aircraft

I figure this feature would enable a couple of play styles

  1. It would be feasible to DRFM/Noise Jam missiles - if the player has set their search mode to radar.
  2. If the target isn't using any jamming modules, then in HOJ mode it will cause the missile to fly past the target.
  3. It enables 24/45 pilots to optically guide the missile in HOJ mode if the target isn't noise jamming. But this isn't as bad as it sounds because they can only optically track 1 target at a time. The caveat to this is its line of sight.
  4. In HOJ search mode there is a real threat to EW aircraft who leave their jammers on.

And thechnically optical guidance is degraded by weather
(Degraded as in its generally harder to aquire proper locks wich will be held until impact)

In the field of weaponry, terminal guidance refers to any guidance system that is primarily or solely active during the "terminal phase", just before the weapon impacts its target. The term is generally used in reference to missile guidance systems, and specifically to missiles that use more than one guidance system through the missile's flight....

#

how would you set it for the ASMRM-7 ?

keen aspen
#

Well, you don't but I guess the AI could

#

(hackit wants ASMRM-7s for player aircraft)

keen aspen
#

I already talked to hackit about this, but yeah I think optical guided 120ds would suck lol

frosty scroll
keen aspen
#

Maybe if they just flat out missed if they were set to only HOJ at terminal

#

Because suddenly, you got a missile that can't be chaffed, notched, extremely hard to g pull with timing, and maybe 2 seconds warning on MWS if its even still hot enough

#

Granted its limited to one target at a time, but its pretty brutal

frosty scroll
#

well the 120D is TSD guided so if you have the radar one you could very well have more

keen aspen
#

Fun fact, one of the things that started this suggestion was that hackit discovered a pretty deadly counter to pre-emptive DRFM on a radar

#

But only 4th gen can pull it off, not 5th

sterile garden

#

I don't think TWS updates it frequently enough for reliable impact?

#

At least it shouldn't

sterile garden
#

yeah true

ancient ravine
#

maybe that's a nerf 120D could use too, decrease rate of datalink updates

sterile garden
#

but in TWS you don’t know you’re getting targeted, so you don’t manoever

ancient ravine
#

only if the missile is cold enough to no trigger MWS

sterile garden
#

non manouevering target means even with 4hz update the amraam should be able to hit

celest forge
#

I think tws updates rather frequently, at least it looks like it on the radar screen. Either way, you can go STT when t=3 or sth and guide it in that way

Noise is fair game, its inherent with the dangers of HOJ
