#FA-26B Remodeling

yeah
Honestly not going forward with a remodel is a big mistake. Yes, it'd break a lot of skins with the new UV map, but frankly I think that is outweighed by not having a comically huge cockpit.
Make no mistake, I respect Baha as a developer immensely, but flying the F/A-26 and AV-42 feels like flying the magic school bus, not a 4.5/5th gen fighter/attacker jet.
i think its fine for the AV-42 to feel like a magic school bus (after all its role as a troop transport makes it similar in a way, and the feeling even moreso supports the uniqueness of the 42) but the F/A-26B does feel too big for its own good
Keep the existing model for backwards compatibility, make a new 26 with a true bubble canopy
Ong we need a bubble canopy
And that probably wont happen (although it has before)
Porting liveries doesn't seem like it would be too hard either
If he kept the same mesh, but sculpted it, he could port the liveries over, but in all honesty I’d rather have a new 26 and have to remake all my liveries
I agree, although I can't say I know anything about making liveries
Sculpting it would change the mesh?
The existing 26 can’t be remodeled without drastically effecting the UV and existing textures.
The best course of action is to make a new aircraft based on the 26 with better proportions and a similar design
She’s so real
Mods are proving your point too. The F16 mod is top notch, better than any VTOL plane, and that's not just cause it's an F16, there's just some great quality of life things in there and it is nice and cozy without being difficult to operate (buttons wise).
It sucks seeing someone try out this game, they jump into the 26, and it just looks a bit goofy compared to newer aircraft and modded (mostly F16 and A10). Wouldn't you want the first impression, not just of the player, but any viewers, to be very high?!
Keep cooking
Especially since the current options are the F/A-26, which is kinda ass, the F-45, which is still kinda ass and very different, or 3 DLC planes
The AV-42 is both magical (those engines are absurd) and technically capable of bussing children to school
The AV-42 is bussin.
Okay, so I’ve been working on the right prompt to get AI to generate a solid concept for an FA-26 Remodel. I’ve tried, ad nauseam, to have it change a few small details, but this is as close as I can get it for now:
I like the bottom one the best
This image (above) was my favorite because I finally got it to generate a good length for the plane. The others were too short in my option, but here are the others, as well:
Obviously, it removed some of the more “F-15 qualities” but this is as close as i could get it 🤪 I’d say, bring back the larger F-15 Air intakes, and make the wings/elevators a little larger.
i don't think we want something so drastic
This, if this ever has a chance of happening (it doesnt already) it needs to be as close to the existing 26 as possible, just a little update of the model
Return to the F/A-26A
Yeah, I really couldn’t get it to do what I wanted cause of “content policy restrictions” 🙃
Cool looking design, but the only thing that needs changed on the 26 is the cockpit
That’s all
Please, a single piece bubble with no bow and make it normal sized
Normal sized canopy on the existing nose is gonna look even worse
Now it just suffers from E:D syndrome
1980's spin off of VTOL would go hard
what's ED syndrome ?
Well, I did have a thread in vtolvrdev of a low tech spinoff of VTOL, but it fucking got closed by a moderator
Elite:dangerous
The cockpits of those ships are stupid big
(Ship in picture is the "type 9")
It's way oversized for the amount of crew you can have in it
the 26 model is close to being great, but for something based on the eagle, hornet and raptor (all great looking), it's just off
canopy is worse offender
the nose is pretty ugly
Me when my fictional aircraft is non-descript
For me it’s the massive body, misaligned wings, and tiny nose
Misaligned wings?
Honestly? It feels good to me. I’d have to jump into DCS, but it feels roughly like the Hornet already.
Hornet + near future engines
Like the edges of the wings aren’t aligned
Ah. I never had an issue with that, it's just stylistic
i like this alot
I like it too, reminds me of the F/A-181
I believe it would be a little bigger than that
as the f15 is around the same size of the f22 if not a little longer
while the f35 (which the f45 is based off on, and the J20) is around the size of a f-16
but yeah my biggest gripe with the F/A-26b was how large it is, and how cartoony the body of it looks compared to the 45, tyro, and the ef-24
Sadly, Baha said he have no plans on doing major rework for fa26
I wonder why he hasn't closed this thread yet
maybe in the future we can hope
That's sorta sucky
at least scale the other planes accordingy to the fa-26 then
They are
The EF24G is the newest and the second largest aircraft
It's more the cockpit really
well then scale the 45 to the proper scale then
and the cockpits are the main issue
I feel like I am a child in a cockpit while in the f/a-26
Believe it or not, the 45 is actually correctly scaled to an F-35A/B
It just feels tiny because everything else in VTOL is made to be visible in VR
Made to be visible from high orbit*
tge 45 is at a good size rn
the t55 is perfect
I know. As compared to their IRL counterparts, I think the T-55 is correct and the 45 is exactly the same as the 35A/B
I have some better model comparisons in the UH-60 thread
If only it were as simple as 🤏 , say the model gets scaled down, that means so too would the mfd’s and all the buttons as well.
Wait who wants it scaled up?

cv1 users maybe
Two people in my group still rock it so I could see why. They're certainly not enjoying the size of the F-16C mod lol

Well I never stated that the 45 felt off
I think the 45 feels actually the best
but someone said that there were going to be no changes to the 26b so I was just saying to scale it to the 26
the 26 is the only one that is too large
it should be downscaled, not all the others upscaled
the cockpit is massive too
look at the T55
its certainly not that bad to shrink everything with like 15%
Massive you say?
Pretty sure the ef-24 is scaled to the 26b
Well we know the 24 isn’t scaled to the F-14. It’s about 10% larger
I’ve been working on the right prompt to get AI to gen
close enought to the F-14, what matters is that the 24 doesn’t feel massive, the cockpit is tight and the model is right
the 24 doesn't even really feel like an F-14 in general imo
how would you know ?
like wdym
it's only similarity really is the swing wing
oh it's midnight
the EF-24G feels like if you took a 1969 GT 440 and changed everything, replaced the stereo with car play, changed the engine, changed the front grille, and replaced the seats, but kept the coke bottle design because "that's what it's known for"
don't get me wrong I love the EF-24G, it's probably my favorite but it's not really an F-14
fair
Wasp definitely needs some work done
Super hornet body with strike eagle wings and front cockpit could be cool. Or just scale it down, either would be cool
And make the canopy less bulbous
After trying to model, UV, texture, and implement a custom aircraft, let alone an aircraft that's a staple in a game like VTOL, I can see why Baha refuses to update the 26, let alone the cockpit.
It's such a pain
looking at your models makes me realize just how shit I am at using blender lol
It's definitely the patient man's program lol
i just cant really make something look not low poly lol
trying to go for a technical look
Smooth and AutoSmooth rendering is your friend. Seams and sharp edges are also nice.
It's best to get the base model as close to final as possible, then subdivide. Even then, sometimes blender's automatic subdivision sucks
i only have about 100hrs of time in blender which I now realize isnt much at all
thats 100hrs over the span of about 3yrs lol
yeah i mostly just use the auto subdivide option
I think I'm around 400-500 hours at this point. In 2 years, since august 2023
the first 100 or so was just me mucking around, learning it
I mostly learned how to use it just cause I was bored and figured I'd help Phoenix work on developing Danger close vr, its been a lot of fun but I only really work on stuff for a couple hours each weekend between welding school and working as a welder lol
quite a few models in the game like the F16, HMWWV, MATV and the APC have been worked on by me
the biggest heartbreaker was working on the A10 and F14 for months day after day just for us to realize they didnt function when we added them to the game
so we shelved them for now
learn how to model with quads and use the sub-div modifier
if used correctly you can basically get infinite detail where you want it
