#Engine Fire and Fire Suppression

What do you guys think about having a system where when your engines take enough damage they catch fire and take damage over time until they are destroyed? To counter this a pilot would have to turn the engine off and back on again in it's most basic form, or intact with some fire suppression interface before restarting the engines.

i think this is preferable to "on fire" being just a visual thing at low HP

I think it's just a bit too much for the semi-arcadey-simmy nature of VTOL.

the fire should have some consequence even if its fully solvable

imo

it seems a bit niche, but I suppose fuel dump also is

There's a point to which fire on an aircraft means, get the hell out / land as soon as practical.
In VTOL if you're damaged to the point which you are on fire, it's best to decide if you can save it or punch out.

saving it would just mean buying more time to land, not fully going back to fighting

#

ignoring the fire makes your engines fully broken

with this system

buying more control/ease for landing as well

You won't be restarting an engine that's been on fire and had fire suppression pulled. Not only because jet turbines wouldn't want to restart after having been on fire or having a bunch of combustion inhibiting foam sprayed in them, but also whatever fuel/oil/hydraulic leak that caused the fire in the first place is probably still going to be there when you go to restart it 😄

#

so that'd be the most immediate consequence

IMO this would be a better system than just the engine either being fully functional or fully broken

#

also hooks back into a new/improved damage system

I think if anything it should come with a damage model rework

#

having to deal with partial functionality of systems and working around that would be neat, and would give some actual functionality to the redundant analog navigation tools present on some aircraft

I think an all-encompassing "damage models update" request would go over very well in the community.

yeah being able to salvage an engine would be nice

Is it even possible to restart a damaged engine in the base game? Whenever I get an engine failure I always try to restart it mid-flight but it never works.

Nope. If an engine or the APU fails, it’s dead. Bone dead

I understand the realism factor, but i'd love to see some recovery option to a damaged engine. And it'd be another thing for a wso/ewo to do. Pilot works on flying and surviving, co-pilot focuses engine recovery.

and when you realize you only get one pull for fire suppression per engine

Yea I’m all for more detailed damage models in general

I'm all for fires degrading the plane over time if they're not dealt with
