My own conclusion so far is that I will need a lot more hobby projects and nice results to show.

Working on that one nowadays.

How do you guys juggle your normal day job and hobby projects?

Breaking into the game industry has never been easy, and this year feels even harder.

There are some simulation / visualization posts in Europe, but a lot of them are related to the defense industry. Even when I get my European passport next year, I feel it I will still be at a disadvantage for these jobs because of my Chinese background.

Other than these, I don't actually know where to look for 3d rendering jobs in Europe anymore.

The rate of getting interviews with companies that work with general-purpose industrial softwares has been pretty good. That for GPGPU/CUDA related jobs has been pretty good too.

But that at a game company has been absolutely terrible. Most of them never reply.
