API channel for OpenXR might be nice.

The vr-ar channel was retired for inactivity (about 9 months ago).
Would probably make more sense (if there is the server support via a wave of upvotes for this) to bring that back from the recycling bin rather than make a specific OpenXR only channel.

That would work for me

#

I can provide some activity

#

I have lots of stupid questions about OpenXR nervous

dim basin
#

You might not get many answers unfortunately

covert glen
#

this_is_fine That is okay, then I keep banging my head and answer myself when I finally get it

#

I can also continue hijacking Worlds Engine channel, where I do get some answers

#

How about VR/AR role at least? nervous

I don't see the point in deleting channels just because they don't get a lot of traffic

#

If they're not super relevant or something sure but VR/AR is very much graphics-related, even if it's still niche, so it seems relevant to have a channel for it

#

Just because it doesn't have a continuous flow of discussion doesn't mean it isn't a useful resource to search through for people who are trying to get started building VR stuff

Eventually you run into channel spam (which is something that detracts from the new user experience - working out which channels to mute to get to the experience they actually want) and the dispiriting sense you're screaming into the void if you're the only person talking on a channel & no one responds.

#

I'd love for this post to have a dozen upvotes from people wanting VR-AR to come back. Would be an easy thing to get done (and then we find out if it gets retired a 4th time for never being used). But so far this doesn't seem to be attracting server demand (unless Discord Reactions are completely broken again & is now hiding names as well as miscounting the number of upvotes in the total).

we could reactivate #vr-ar

#

there is this feature now where you can hide/unhide channels in your channel listing thing these days

covert glen
#

Yeah I don't quite understand why people are against more channels

vocal mountain
#

it was very crowdy back then

covert glen
#

tons of channels?

dim basin
#

I mean, I'm not against reactivating vr-ar. Just wanting to be sure theres enough interest in it.

covert glen
#

Isn't the whole point in channels that people can choose the ones they are interested in?

#

And in what way a low-traffic channel would cause any trouble?

dim basin
#

In the same way that having too many low-traffic channels dilute the discussion too much

glossy nymph
#

I can understand not wanting to have a ton of super niche channels that dilute discussion but VR is a pretty major graphics programming topic so it seems like a strange one to cull due to traffic

#

VR just has a hardware barrier to entry which is why not many people do/play it

dim basin
#

Ironically, the reason it has been 'deactivated' twice is because there was basically zero traffic.
I thought there would be more discussion, but it seems most VR/AR devs go elsewhere for talking about it.
Which, doesn't mean there can't be discussion about it here.

#

I'm reacting to "vr/ar is a pretty major graphics programming topic" to be clear

glossy nymph
#

Yeah there was basically zero traffic but over time people had shared a number of resources and stuff that could be searched for if someone did come along

#

Which is still valuable

#

There are also a lot more people here than there used to be

#

If nobody else, Synchronizer is doing VR dev pretty much full time

vocal mountain
#

you know what, lets reactivate it

#

but we will still not create channels for each and every topic or programming language

#

until reasonable blabla as a suggestion is happening

dim basin
#

which category should it go in? Rendering? Discussions?

vocal mountain
#

heheh was finking the same question

#

rendering methinks

#

or we rename it openxr and move it to apis

dim basin
#

right where it came from 😛

#

I'm down for renaming it to openxr and putting it in API.

#

I do have to ask if there is any significant vr/ar work not using openxr

vocal mountain
#

either way is fine by me

#

mayhaps vr-ar covers more of those things and makes more sense

dim basin
#

aaaaaaand moved to rendering

#

@ me if you think it should be somewhere else

vocal mountain
#

@dim basin also dont forget to Approved and Implemented it 😉

dim basin
#

how do I do that

dim basin
#

Its in the Rendering category

covert glen
#

It is not visible to me

vocal mountain
#

booped you from there

#

mayhaps kill the app and restart?
