Truthear Nova Review - Diehard Harman on a budget? ($149.9 MSRP)

Fit & Comfort: Pseudo-custom, so its comfortable for me. However, the shell itself is a little bit on the bigger side, so take that into consideration

Cable: Cloth cable, some will like it, others wont. Good for the price, but the cable is a little bit longer than the usual 1.2m standard

Accessories: 3 standard tips, a pair of foam and 2 pairs of dual flange tips, its there but a little bit cheap imo. Also comes with a carrying pouch (the zip one)

Build: 3D-printed, good for the price, no driver flex due to multiple vents on the IEMs. Typical Truthear faceplate, some holographic effect, which is cool

Source + Music file: Apple dongle / iFi Go Bar / Snowsky Echo Mini + FLAC/DSD files
Dunu S&S / TangZu Sancai Balance / Azla Xelastec

IEMs config: 1DD + 4BA

Soundstage: a little bit taller than the width, a little bit small for me. Imaging is good tho, can handle well with busy tracks

Sound signature: Diehard Harman IE2019 target

Bass: Great overall bass, especially the subbass, not bleeding into the midrange, which is something i appreciate more than the Simgot Supermix 4, also using the Harman IE2019 tuning
Mid: Clear, actual pog upper mid, but not with the lower mid, so the male vocals can be a little bit dimmed
(would recommend this set to female vocal lovers, but for the male vocal enthusiasts, look elsewhere
Treble: More balanced than i expected from a Harman set tbh. Sounds a little bit artificial, but overall good extension. spotted no harshness except for somewhere around 8khz peak, but not bothering me at all
(you can feel the "artificial" side of this set's treble from classical music, especially violins

Pros: Harman IE2019 diehard, so look for this set if you want an exciting pair of IEMs
Bass is clean and punchy
KreyGasm female vocals
Zero bleeding across the band

Cons: Can be shouty sometimes
Lower mid is a pain for the male vocal enjoyers like me
Smaller ears can find this set chonky
150 bucks for the Nova can be a little bit expensive

Conclusion: for $149.99 (ik lets just call it 150 idgaf), its a strong contender for the best IEMs under 200 bucks, especially since the "Harman" is considered to be fitted for most people. But for the price, i somehow expect something more "overall", maybe a little boost on the lower mid. But for the p/p and the tuning, this is a no brainer rec. for me
Personal score: 9/10 (8.5 if you buy this for the full price, also the SM4 exists)

Disclaimer: i kinda not believe in DAC chips difference in sound, so i wont focus on that aspect.
Also i updated the firmware to 1.4.6 version. You can find that @ fiio official site

8Gb internal + 256Gb max SD card
DSD, WAV, FLAC, APE, MP3, M4A, OGG
Bluetooth 5.3 (SBC only)

Packaging: barebone, as for the cheap price. Youll get your DAP, some paper thingy and a A-to-C cable. Thats it.

Build quality: Full plastic body, feels sturdy, buttons feel tactile but have some slight wobble.

UI: Basic but functional. Non-android so dont expect some airplay wifi fancy shit.

Screen quality: i think its IPS, 2 inch, display quality is good and all.

Sounding: Floor noise is pitch black with every IEMs i use with, and surprisingly it can also drive some fullsize headphones.
The EQ, however, is kinda terrible, even with the non-EQ user like me. Just basic presets and somehow it cant be applied to any FLAC file thats more than 16bit/44.1khz.
Has some filters (fast/low/etc.) and gain settings, which i appreciate.

Functionality: pretty straightforward, you just take your SD card and plug it in. your music will be loaded. But a nitpick from me is the copy speed, you kinda have to buy a SD card reader if you want fast copy time.
Bluetooth works fine, but the lack of other codecs will make some people feel "lossy" (like bro its bluetooth)

Battery life: as a non-android DAP, i can squeeze this device for a fairly long time per charge
(8-9hrs @ 3.5 unbalanced + 65/120, 6-7hrs @ 4.4 balanced + 40/120)
But the charging time is a pain, this thing takes me nearly 2 hours to charge from 0 to 100

Also you cant use this device as a external DAC like some other DAPs have, but its just like a side function, so it doesnt bother me much

Pros:

• Actual insane P/P, you can buy this for as low as 40 bucks on sale days
• Pitch black floor noise, so the sound is clear
• 4.4mm port in this price bracket is insane
• Also has bluetooth support
• Battery life is impressive whatsoever

Cons:

• Charging time is a pain in the ass, 2 hours for 1100mAh device
• 256Gb max for SD card, so whoever using DSD or "HI-RIZZ" codec will not be interested in this device. Look elsewhere
• SBC codec only (just my nitpicking)
• EQ is non-existence

Conclusion: for as low as 40 bucks DAP, personally i think its a no brainer purchase, with some caveats (man its cheap as hell). But i can only really recommend this device (or any DAP) to people who want the "seperation", dont want to drain their phones' battery life for some hanging dongles. Otherwise, its a good device for me.
Personal score: 9.5/10 (for the price), 8.5/10 (overall)
