My Grandfather served in an experimental program of ACH-47A Chinook Gunships.
There were a total of 4 that saw action.
- “Stump Jumper” - lost in an accident while taxiing.
- “Co$t of Living” -Rushed through testing following “Stump Jumper”’s accident. Crashed during Gun Run near Bong Son when the forward pin on its 20mm cannon fell loose, causing the cannon to swivel into the rotors.
- “Birth Control” - forced to land after taking heavy fire during an attempted retaking of Hue during the Tet Offensive. The crew was rescued, and the aircraft was destroyed by NVA mortar teams.
- “Easy Money” landed between “Birth Control” and enemy forces to lay down suppressive fire. They sustained injuries but managed to rescue the downed crew. Without another gunship to fight beside, “Easy Money” was set to transport and training of military and civilian personnel.
My grandpa: Virgil served as the rear door gunner on “Easy Money” and laid down life and fire to save the downed crew of “Birth Control”.
